Software: For music, she uses Steinberg Cubase and DigiDesign ProTools. For graphics and web design, Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver for the most part. For video editing, a little bit of iMovie and a lot of Final Cut Pro. She also mentioned that Mozilla is a great browser, so she doesn't use Internet Explorer anymore except when going to the UPS site which won't work on anything but IE... very irritating.

Now that you know what kind of a system Emilie has set up, and you can kind of get an idea of just how much of her own production is done by herself, I'll let Emilie tell you in her own words what it's like for her to use Macs in her line of business.

MN: How easy is this set up for you to use, especially when you first got going with it?

EA: I showed up at a studio one night never having used ProTools before, and asked for the manual. They thought I was crazy, but I had read it by the next morning and could successfully navigate from then on. I like to gorge myself with as much information as possible and then learn the rest by trial and error, and the result is usually that I can figure new things out pretty quickly. Also, it helps that Macs are much more intuitive I general as opposed to PCs which seem to be always working against you.

MN: How did you get started with Macs?

EA: When I was creating some artwork for an album a couple of years ago, I was introduced to a Tangerine iMac. It was simply a beautiful, concise machine, and I was instantly hooked. That was also my introduction to the world of Photoshop as well, so it was like entering OZ all at once. I've since gone on to use Macs for every part of my business, from recording and film editing to running my record label. I had previously owned several PCs, all of which I have since sold on eBay.

MN: Why Macs and not a machine running Windows?

EA: I grew up with PCs, so I never really knew the potential for a positive user/computer relationship until I first sat down to a Mac. I have always liked working with electronics ever since I was quite small, and I was always the "fix it" girl whenever anything went wrong with the PCs belonging to all my friends and family, which was often. I took all the incomprehensible Windows errors as a personal challenge, and thought that this sort of combative relationship was how humans and computers were supposed to interact. It was only when I first started using Macs that I began to discover how technology could actually enrich my life and enhance my creative output.

MN: I have heard that your iBook plays an important role in your onstage performances. Could you tell us what that role is?

EA: Yes, my iBook, "Puppy," is a huge part of my touring stage performance. He's a beautiful, sleek little thing, and he has a lot of groupies. He sits on one side of the stage and controls my keyboards using midi powered by Steinberg's Cubase. The iBook essentially acts as a sequencer for programmed electronics, and is responsible for bring my largely electronic album to life on stage. "Puppy" also gives me the option to easily customize my music or set list at any time, whereas a DAT tape would be static and impossible to alter on the fly.

MN: What is it about Macs and Mac OS, software, equipment, etc., that let's you do what you want to do as far as your music production is concerned?

EA: To start with, the Mac OS is a beautiful piece of work. I was quite attached to OS 9, and wasn't exactly looking forward to switching to the X side and all the software updates that would entail. A few hours into it however and I had completely changed my mind. I love the multi-tasking ability inherent in OS X, and the networking and increased practicality is a major upgrade as well. As for software, my life really changed with DigiDesign ProTools. I had been recording long before that, first on a 4-track when I was in my early teens, and then in studios direct to tape. With ProTools on the Mac, I can create professional quality recordings in my own home and am free to work how I want, when I want. I feel the same way about Adobe Photoshop, which has allowed me to easily create loads of artwork and graphics for all the media we do here at Traitor. Then, when I first started working with MIDI, Cubase was a great program to learn on, and I still use it now from the initial programming phase all the way up to live performance. There are just so many developments happening all the time in the world of computer music, and I find it all very exciting, a sentiment I would never have experienced had I not discovered the world of Macs.

MN: What would be your advice to a Mac novice about getting started with something like what you have going?

EA: I feel that the best thing about the Mac community is that they are for the most part a generous and helpful species. This is due, I think, to the fact that they are content with their equipment and truly enjoy their work. Since most people in the creative fields are using Macs already, a novice user would have a lot of opportunity right from the start to go into studios, ask questions, buy a half an hour with a recording engineer, and learn as much as possible from those who already know. Another great thing available to new users is free downloadable software, such as the ProTools trial version. It only supports eight tracks, but that's more than enough to get the feel for the real thing. I understand that Mac OS X is planning to incorporate midi right into the OS in a future upgrade, so that will make things a lot more automatic for new users as well. My best advice would be to get your most basic recording/programming gear in order (ProTools or Cubase and a decent microphone), and then build from there, keeping in mind that there is no substitute for good software. Oh, and use the Google news groups for all they're worth!

Types of developers

How many types of developers do you know? And, if you are a developer, to which type do you refer yourself? In the real world, the boundaries between different types of developers are blurred. The more professional you become, the more types you will fit. So let’s see, how many types of developers are available in software development industry.

Before we start, we’d like to say thanks to Lorenzo Pasqualis whose article inspired us to create this material.

To be honest, most of us recognize only three types of software developers: frontend, backend and fullstack. That is obvious, but this is just a half of the truth. Nowadays different developers with the same tech stacks unlikely can apply their skills and knowledge to the different area. It’s like asking your mobile developer to work on creating a game. He could know the tools, but he is not a game developer. And that makes a huge differentiation in developer’s types.

We’ll start with the main types:

Frontend:

Yesterday we wrote the biggest article with cheatsheet for frontenders. So who are they? This is a type of developers who specialize in visual user interfaces, aesthetics, and layouts. Their code runs on a web browser, on the computer of the site user. They work on creating web apps and websites. Hardware is not what frontend specialists usually think about.

Their work requires an understanding of human-machine interaction and design principles more than computer science theory.

Frontend development skills:

design of user interface (UI)

design of user experience (UX)

CSS

JavaScript

HTML

UI frameworks.

Frontend devs need to be familiar with frameworks like Bootstrap, Foundation, Backbone, AngularJS, and EmberJS, which ensure great-looking content no matter the device, and libraries like jQuery and LESS, which package code into a more useful, time-saving form. A lot of front-end developer job listings also call for experience with Ajax, a widely used technique for using Javascript that lets pages dynamically load by downloading server data in the background.

Backend:

The second most popular type of developers. The backend developer specializes in the design, implementation, functional core logic, performance, and scalability of a piece of software or system running on machines that are remote from the end-user. They integrate a vast array of services such as databases, caching, logging, email systems etc.

What makes the front end of a website possible? Where is all that data stored? These are the questions for the backend development. The backend of a website consists of a server, an application, and a database. A backend developer builds and maintains the technology that powers those components which, together, enable the user-facing side of the website to even exist in the first place.

Backend development skills:

Java

C, C++

Ruby

Python

Scala

Go, etc.

They also use tools like MySQL, Oracle, and SQL Server to find, save, or change data and serve it back to the user in front-end code. Job openings for backend developers often also call for experience with PHP frameworks like Zend, Symfony, and CakePHP; experience with version control software like SVN, CVS, or Git; and experience with Linux as a development and deployment system.

Fullstack:

Call this developer a wizard, but he (or she) does both frontend and backend work. The fullstack developer has the skills required to create a fully functional web application. It is considered that working on both the server side and client side professionally opens more opportunities. They’re jacks-of-all-trades.

Mobile developer:

This is a developer who writes code for applications that run natively on consumer mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. This type appeared after the boom of mobile devices in the early 2000s and the explosion of the smartphone market. Before then mobile development was considered a subset of embedded development (we will write about embedded developers in this article too).

A mobile developer understands the intricacies of mobile operating systems such as iOS and Android, and the development environment and frameworks used to write software on those operating systems.

Application Programming Interfaces (API) like Apple iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, and Symbian

Web development languages like HTML 5 and CSS

Cross-platform mobile suites like Antenna and AMP ( Accounting-Management-Promotion)

Game developer:

Every game-addicted child wants to become a game developer in future. But this occupation as much romantic and fun as complicated and demanding.

Game developer specializes in writing games and can fall into one of the other categories of developers, but they often have specific knowledge and skills in designing and implementing engaging and interactive gaming experiences.

Skills for game developers:

DirectX, OpenGL, Unity 3D, WebGL frameworks

languages such as C, C++, and Java

JavaScript and HTML5

Swift and Java for mobile devices.

Data Scientist:

This type of developer writes software programs to analyze data sets. They are often in charge of statistical analysis, machine learning, data visualization, and predictive modeling. Quite romantic, right? But the list of skills a data scientist should have covers a lot of science-related things:

Statistical programming languages, like R or Python, and a database querying languages like SQL

Understanding the statistics and different techniques that are (or aren’t) a valid approach

Familiarity with machine learning methods

Knowing Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra principles

Knowing how to deal with imperfections in data (including missing values, inconsistent string formatting etc.)

Visualizing and communicating data is incredibly important

Having a strong software engineering background

Ability to solve high-level problems

DevOps developer:

This is a type of developer familiar with technologies to build, deploy and integrate the system and administer back-end software and distributed systems.

To explain the way:

A developer (programmer) creates applications

Ops deploys, manages, monitors applications

DevOps creates applications AND deploys/manages/monitors them.

DevOps was made possible because of the cloud and the tools/platforms to make deployment and management easy. Skills needed by devops:

Kubernetes

Docker

Apache Mesos

the HashiCorp stack (Terraform, Vagrant, Packer, Vault, Consul, Nomad)

Jenkins, etc.

Software Development Engineer in Test:

This type of developer is responsible for writing software to validate the quality of software systems. They create automated tests, tools and systems to make sure that products and processes run as expected. Skills needed for engineers in test:

Python

Ruby

Selenium.

Embedded developer:

The embedded developer works with hardware that isn’t commonly classified as computers. For example, microcontrollers, real-time systems, electronic interfaces, set-top boxes, consumer devices, IoT devices, hardware drivers, and serial data transmission fall into this category.

Embedded developers often work with languages such as:

C, C++

Assembly

Java or proprietary technologies, frameworks, and toolkits

With the embedded developer definition, we would like to finish the list of developer’ types. We named for you the main developer types which are fundamentally different. But you could also hear about:

– web developer (the purpose of web development is obvious)

– application developer (who is proficient in creating different types of apps)

– security developer (who creates systems, methods, and procedures to test the security of a software system)

– CRM developer (they hang out with SAP, Salesforce, Sharepoint, and Enterprise Resource Planning)

– Big data developer (rarely met, this type of developers use systems for distributed storage and processing of vast amounts of data such as MapReduce, Hadoop, and Spark)

– Graphics developers (they specialize in writing software for rendering, lighting, shadowing, shading, culling, and management of scenes)

IRS online tool helps non-filers apply for COVID-19 payments

The Internal Revenue Service is beginning the process of sending out COVID-19 economic relief payments. Americans who filed a tax return in 2018 or 2019, as well as folks who got Social Security retirement or disability payments or Railroad Retirement benefits, don't have to do anything.

The IRS will use the tax return or other government payment information on file to send the money, which could be a maximum of $1,200 per individual or $2,400 for married couples who file jointly, to these eligible recipients.

Some people, however, don’t fall into these already on-record categories. The most notable group here is low-income workers who do not make enough money to require that they file a Form 1040.

But these folks could benefit greatly from the added cash. And the IRS now has an online tool to help them get their portion of the $2.2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act relief.

COVID payment filing for non-filers: The new Non-Filer Payment tool is designed for use by single filers who in 2019 made less than $12,200 and married couples who earned less than $24,400 and did not or do not plan to file a tax return.

A quick filing note. Some folks who don't have to file do so anyway for other reasons, usually to get refunds of taxes that were withheld or to claim a tax credit for which they qualify. If you are one of these folks who has or will file even though your income is within the ranges established for the non-filers payment tool, do not use it. The IRS has your information and should sent you your COVID-19 payments automatically.

If, however, you do need to get your information to the IRS, go to the special web filing tool as soon as possible.

And a bit of bad news for students who might fall into these earnings limits.

If someone else claimed you on their tax return, you will not be eligible for the Economic Impact Payment and cannot use the Non-Filer tool. Sorry, but there may be some future relief for you (or your family) thanks to a bill pending in Congress to expand payments to college students (and others), and which might become part of future COVID-19 legislation.

Before you start: But back to now and the non-filer online form. As with all interactions with Uncle Sam's tax collector, you'll need some information handy before you start.

In the case of the non-filer online tool, you'll have to provide your:

Full name, current mailing address and an email address

Date of birth and valid Social Security number

Bank account number, type and routing number, if you have one and want your payment directly deposited. (If you don't have a bank account, your COVID-19 payment will be mailed to the address on the form.)

Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) you received from the IRS earlier this year, if you have one

Driver’s license or state-issued ID, if you have one

For each qualifying child: name, Social Security number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number and their relationship to you or your spouse

Got all that? Good. Then on to the tool.

Entering your info: After an introduction page again spelling out who should and should not use it, the special web page will ask you to create an account.

This account creation process was designed for the IRS by Intuit, maker of TurboTax and a member of the Free File Alliance that works with IRS' Free File online tax return preparation and e-filing option. In this case, it's based on the fillable forms option, which takes basic tax returns and makes then accessible to be filled out via computer and then electronically filed.

Privacy alert: If you're worried about what Uncle Sam and/or the tax software manufacturer will do with your data, check out the new web page's privacy statement.

Once you're satisfied and/or comfortable with the process, then you'll enter your email address, a user name, password and an option phone number.

Neither the IRS nor Intuit will call you, according to the registration instructions. The phone number will be used, according to the page, only to help recover your account if you forget your password.

But there's no choice as far as an email. You must have one to eventually e-file your return.

Here's a quick email hint. After you're done with this account creation page, go to your email (in a new browser window) and find the message from the IRS. It will have a link asking you to verify the email account. Do that. Your email must be verified before you can, a little later in the process, e-file your return.

Personally, I'm always a little leery about leaving an online application for fear of not getting back in. By verifying it first (again in a separate browser window), you won't have to leave the filing process when you get to the end of form and it tells you that your email must be verified. And you (OK, I) also will be confident that the actual return e-filing will be completed without a hitch.

Short COVID tax form: As for the return itself, it's pretty basic. Below are some screen shots.

The image above is actually three screen shots. To get a bigger, better look, at each segment, click on them near the top, in the area where you see lines to enter dependents' information and near the end.

The key area is in the middle section, where it asks for your bank information (routing number and specific account number) and whether it's a checking or savings account. This info will let the IRS directly deposit your COVID-19 relief payment.

If you don't have a bank account, the payment will be sent to the address you've entered via U.S. mail.

Again, it's pretty basic, self-explanatory and quick for most folks to complete.

E-filing the form: Then it's on to Step 2, the actual electronic filing of the form.

This is where things might get a bit uncomfortable, especially for folks who've not filed a tax return for a while. In fact, this page could be quite intimidating.

The online non-filer tool asks for info from your 2018 tax return, like your adjusted gross income (AGI), or a signature Personal Identification Number (PIN).

Don't freak out. If you didn't file a return for the 2018 tax year, enter 0 (zero) in the "Taxpayer" AGI space. If you're filling out this form jointly with your spouse and he or she didn't file a return last year either, also enter zero in the "Spouse" AGI space.

E-signing, e-filing your return: Next, you'll have to sign your return electronically. Start by entering the date, cell number if you have one, and a five-digit PIN of your choosing (other than 00000 or 12345) for both you and, if you're jointly filing, your spouse.

You'll also have to enter your (and spouse's) birth date(s) and, if you (and spouse) have one, your state issued driver's license or ID card number.

Then to the final step. Continue to e-file.

I must admit that I didn't go there, as I have filed in the last two years so I don't meet the non-filer tool's requisite info. Also, I kept getting a "we're updating the system message" and I didn't want to jam it up even more with an invalid filing.

But if it works like my software filing program, you'll get an onscreen message that your form has been filed. The non-filer tool also says it will send you a verification and filing status update to the email your provided.

More online COVID payment help on the way: The Non-Filer tool that went live today is just the first of online options to help everyone who qualifies get their COVID-19 relief payments.

The IRS says it is building a second new tool to help everyone check on the status of their payments. It should be available for use by April 17. This option, dubbed Get My Payment, will provide people with the status of their payment, including the date their payment is scheduled to be deposited into their bank account or mailed to them.

An additional feature on Get My Payment will allow eligible people a chance to provide their bank account information so they can receive their payment more quickly rather than waiting for a paper check.

One not so welcome note here, however, is that the IRS say this feature will not be available if your COVID payment has already has been scheduled for delivery via an alternate method, i.e., snail mail. Bummer.

But I'd still check it out just in case you beat the IRS to the issuance of your payment.

  Coronavirus Caveat & More Information In 2020, we're all dealing with extraordinary circumstances, both in our daily lives and when it comes to our taxes. The COVID-19 pandemic and efforts to reduce its transmission and protect ourselves and our families means that, for the most part, we're focusing on just getting through these trying days. M-Audio seems to be constantly looking for what a consumer desires in low-cost consumer audio gear. As time and technology progresses, it seems that home audio interfaces are becoming faster, smaller, and more feature-packed than ever before. At first glance, the Fast Track Ultra seems to fit perfectly into this mold. The unit is an development on the previous Fast Track Pro, and finds a happy middle-ground between being a small and lightweight portable interface, and a studio tool with a wealth of I/O options and high-quality components.

As a longtime owner of the now-aging M-audio OmniStudio interface, I was curious how this new M-audio interface would stack up against what I considered my small home-studio workhorse. So is M-audio able to continue to improve upon their product line, or are their promises becoming too good to be true?

The Unit

The body of the Fast Track Ultra is clearly a tight squeeze for a unit containing four XLR mic pre-amp inputs on the front face. While my M-audio OmniStudio would support rack ears, the Fast Track is only just over a half rack space wide, clearly showing it is intended mainly as a desktop interface. The unit’s body is plastic, as opposed to the OmniStudio unit which is cased in an aluminum shell. Combined with some questionably loose 1/4” inputs, I am reluctant to say whether the unit would be able to endure heavy use as a portable audio interface. Nevertheless, it is a very attractive unit with easily accessible connections and knobs, giving it a very use-friendly image from the start.

The I/O

Many low-cost and portable audio interfaces seem to fit into two categories: The small 2-channel interface for simple projects or stereo remote recordings (Presonus Firebox, M-Audio Fast Track Pro), or the expanded units, often with eight built-in pres (Presonus Firestudio, Alesis MultiMix). With four built-in mic pre-amps, the Fast Track Ultra fits nicely in the middle.

The M-Audio Fast Track Ultra provides a complete recording solution, with six channels of analog inputs and outputs plus 2-channel digital S/PDIF I/O. Unlike most USB audio interfaces, it features two dedicated inserts on the first two channels, giving you the ability to insert outboard processing before A/D conversion. Easy connection via a single USB 2.0 cable delivers both audio and MIDI communication with your computer.

Getting Connected

The card is the first interface released by M-audio to have USB 2.0 connectivity, a change that seems a bit late. After booting up your computer, you may be surprised to find out that the Fast Track Ultra will power up as well, even without a power adapter. The unit can run with a minimal 2-in 2-out connectivity while being powered through the USB bus alone. A 5V power adapter, which looks oddly like a cell phone power supply, allows for full usage of the I/O options.

I noticed a weird problem after tracking some MIDI keyboards using the unit’s USB bus power. In order to hear playback, I put on my headphones and immediately noticed a hum. After unplugging the MIDI cable, the hum vanished. I decided to leave the MIDI cable inserted and plug in the power adapter. After restarting the unit, the hum again was gone.

The included drivers and software couldn’t have been easier to install on my Mac. The unit supports ASIO and WDM on PC, and core audio on Mac. The installation includes a Control Panel that exists both in the Applications folder and in System Preferences, bringing up the software mixer and monitor controls. Within less than ten minutes, you should be setup and ready to go.

The Control Panel

The m-audio allows monitoring all eight direct inputs (six analog channels and two of S/PDIF digital) as well as software returns, all of which can be separately adjusted in the Control Panel. The monitor windows are clean and simple, and allow fast and easy adjustments with flexible routing. The window looks like a basic mixer and includes a fader, pan, solo, mute, stereo channel link, and an effect send, as well as master out faders with effects return.

Adding up to monitor control, there is a tab for settings, meters, and a status screen labeled “about”. There is also a unusual tab named “flow” that initially seems to be a visual means of re-routing I/O. The screen is, in fact, a diagram for reference, perhaps to give a better on-screen understanding of the unit’s signal flow.

The settings tab has a sample rate selector, a toggle between internal and external clock sync, and settings for the hardware DSP processors, but before you get too excited, this is not intended to be a software plug-ins solution, but pretty a tool for routing monitor reverb or delay to a player without exhausting the cpu. This is a smart and useful, yet partial concept. Each channel is given an individual effect blend via the control panel, but the effects are restricted to several reverb, delay, and echo settings, all of which do not sound particularly great. Even so, this feature is not found on most units in this price range, and is a nice tool to have handy, regardless of its limitations.

The Sound

After completing a project, I am very pleased with the functionality of the unit. I connected it to an iMac with an external firewire hard drive, and we recorded up to six channels flawlessly, with very minimal latency and no clicks or other digital errors.

My only complaint is that the headphone outputs did not have enough gain to my liking, especially for drum tracking. A solution to this could be a better isolating pair of headphones.

Although the build quality of this audio interface seems decent enough, it is still a downgrade from my older OmniStudio, which has a heavier chassis and tighter knobs. Even so, I think the fast track would resist the test of time as long as it’s treated with care.

Whether you’re a musician, producer or DJ, the powerful combination of Apple and M-Audio  gives you everything you need to put together a high-powered personal studio.

Best Audio Interface for Electronic Music Production

Focusrite Scarlett Solo

I use the Focusrite Scarlett Solo for recording podcasts, acoustic songs, and even vocals for some of my club mixes. Even with that wide variety of uses, I have to say that this audio interface gets the job done. My system is an everyday HP desktop that I purchased online that’s a little bit on the more advanced end of the spectrum. For software, I use Adobe Audition as I’ve been using its previous version, Cool Edit Pro, since high school. The Delta 44 and Adobe Audition have been a winning combination for me on my desktop.

The problem I had in the past with recording solutions was the constant snap, crackle, and pop of the audio. Reviewers complained about this issue with the Focusrite Scarlett Solo as well, but the informed reviewers stated that with the proper tuning and by actually reading the instruction manuals, you can have a professional recording setup on your desktop without breaking the bank. Initially, I was skeptical due to the negativity, yet I decided to take the plunge and try things out myself. The worst that could happen is a refund or putting it for sale somewhere online for a little bit of a loss. To me, that’s no big deal so I went along with it.

When the audio card arrived in the mail, I knew I had to do as the positive reviews suggested. I read the instructional manual, took into consideration some tips of reviewers, and even checked some other information online. When I felt I was ready to get the show on the road, I popped open my desktop tower and inserted the card into one of the PCI slots on my motherboard. Yes, even as a top audio interface today, this audio card still relies on a PCI connection rather than a PCI Express connection, which is more common nowadays.

Even with the slightly dated technology, this audio card runs like a charm. My first test was to record one segment of my upcoming podcast for my buddy’s exercise and health website. I made sure my buffer settings were just right – not too high and not too low as suggested by a reviewer of the the Delta 44 online. My voice has never sounded so clear, and this was without any filters. So once I applied my usual filters and effects with some tiny tweaks to mesh better with the new audio card, I sounded like a professional radio personality. Considering how much I spent on this audio card compared to my previous audio interface, it was basically a steal. I guess that’s what happens when you switch from a USB solution to an audio card interface.

So if you have the capacity for a top audio interface in your recording rig, you need to get this Focusrite Scarlett Solo . Responsibilities These positions are located in Los Angeles Division, Los Angeles, CA, Washington, DC Division, Hagerstown, MD & Roanoke, VA. The incumbent will perform the following duties: Perform database queries in law enforcement, compliance, and/or inspection computer systems such as Narcotics and Dangerous Drug Information System Database (NADDIS), Controlled Substances Act Database (CSA), and Chemical Handlers Enforcement Management Systems (CHEMS); Research, assemble, compile and tabulate information and figures, as may be necessary to use in investigations, seizures, and as evidence in various cases; Perform work related to gathering, acquiring, and developing resource materials and other information to support the law enforcement, compliance, and/or inspection program mission of an organization; Provide information to staff, compiles reports on research conducted, and maintaining administrative records, and making recommendations on how to address data anomalies; Perform office automation work requiring the use of software applications, such as spreadsheets, database, word processing, desktop publishing, and graphics applications and various computer equipment; and Prepare correspondence, reports, technical documents, graphs/charts, forms, and other office support materials and ensuring correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, and format.
