Okay…gonna break my Tumblr radio silence for a sec here because as a Quest Master, I feel that this is definitely important to address…

Yes, I read Dan Scanlon’s comic about him leaving Pixar on social media last night

I’ve been trying to figure out just the right words to say to you all because I know in some ways, this isn’t easy news to hear, and it’s definitely news like this that really makes a QM feel uncertain about what the future holds

But I think the most important thing I want to say about this is I feel incredibly grateful that Onward is in our lives ✨

Many movies and shows take several years to make, and ultimately, some of them never see the light of day...

Meanwhile, there have been times where I spend so much energy wishing Onward had more content and more respect/recognition than it has, that I take for granted the fact that we even have this magical world of wonder at all. If anything, that’s the main thing I’ve taken away from Dan’s comic and this news :)

There are not enough words or thanks I can give to Dan for bringing Onward to life, and how thankful I am that he made it from his own personal story that in many ways relates so much to my own life story to the point where I feel safe, and represented and seen as a fantasy nerd and younger sister with a loving older sister and mother as her family whenever I see or think about it in any context

I've also been reading the comments from other people on his posts and it really makes my heart aglow to see that this news has also brought a sort of unity in terms of how much Onward means to us all. That has shown me once again that while it's not always clear, many people do love this movie and consider it to be one of their all-time favorites from Pixar as much as I do, and the rest of you guys do!

So am I happy for Dan and excited for his new chapter? Absolutely!

Over these last 4 or so years, Dan Scanlon has been a big inspiration to me. His ideas, passion, and advice have inspired me to be a better storyteller, via Onward fan-novels and original ideas, and will hopefully continue to do so for years to come!

I’ve also really been enjoying the comics he’s put out this year, and I can’t wait to see what else he creates! I love his style, Onward and beyond, and fully support and wish him the very best of luck in whatever he decides to do next! 👏👏👏

So yeah, that’s all from me. I will definitely have more to say about Onward and how it has impacted my life by the time we reach its 5th anniversary in March. But until then, who knows when you’ll hear from me again, I just wanted to check in/say something 💜

Favorite memories from the fandom?

i remember when we played a game of gartic phone in 2022 for onward's 2nd anniversary, that was so damn fun.

and i'll never forget when we got together in june 2022 to write a letter to dan scanlon for his birthday! the wonderful @cdmagic1408 first brought up this idea, and she sent it to dan the night of his birthday. and he actually responded, which was the coolest thing ever!!

Phew! WHAT A DAY. I am only now finding the time to actually write and post something today... And I would like to do it before the day is over in my timezone so...

Happy 5th Anniversary to My Favorite Film of All Time! ONWARD!

How did I celebrate? Well, first, I decided to finally watch Onward again last night because I haven't actually seen the film in full since before I graduated college, and that was like February 2023? Two years?! So yeah, I was totally due for a rewatch!

And you know what? I still love it. SO much. I can't believe that it is 5-years-old now. And that it's been around for practically 1/5 of my life at this point!

I was thinking over these last few months leading up to today of writing something real deep and personal and perhaps even drawing a fan art to go along with it for this milestone. But honestly, there are just too many and not enough words at the same time to describe how much this film, its world, and its characters mean to me. And all of you who have followed me since 2021 know how much it means to me anyway. So that's literally all I am going to say about that for now...

In the meantime, secondly, today I had decided to do something totally unique, creative, and tasty!

I bought a small chocolate cake, three mini-bags of cheese puffs, and raided some of my leftover vision board materials- following the advice of the awesome Barley and used what I had- to decorate an Onward-themed dessert! After all, Onward itself is about Ian's birthday and today is essentially Onward's birthday, so...yeah!

Oh, and I also made this short video of me "singing" because I couldn't help myself lol

THEN once I finished making it and took pics, I also shared it with Dan and he shared with me a fact I absolutely did not expect whatsoever that I wanted to relay to all of you!

Let me tell you, as soon as I got this reply, I straight-up SCREAMED. In all the times I have corresponded with Dan, I don't believe I have ever once told him what a huge fan of Tom I am. Onward and beyond.

But now, the next time I see that adorable scene of Barley feeding the cheese puff to Ian in the caves, I'll know that that is Tom himself eating that cheese puff too lol

So yeah, that was pretty much my day on this March 6, 2025! And I hope the rest of you Quest Masters/Onward fans had a great day celebrating too!

Hey peeps, Quest Masters, followers, and all!

I know I've been gone for like...a YEAR. Life's been super crazy, you have NO idea. But not gonna get into all that. Just gonna say I’ve been good, been healing, then really good, happy, and off social media (it’s never really been my thing, so…) 😄

But I promise you I'm not dead! Rather, I've come back from the dead to say that I looked at today's date and just so happened to realize— OMG! It has been exactly three years since I published the first chapter of my Onward fan-novel, If You Trust Me! Wow!

I have found myself in other fandoms as an observer in this last year (maybe I’ll share what they are someday, but not yet), but first, I just wanna say that Onward is still my favorite Pixar film AND my favorite film ever, that hasn’t changed. I still think about it everyday and love it very much. But yeah, I have moved on to other things these days…

Second, and most importantly— I have decided that today, on the anniversary of IYTM’s publishing phase, I wanted to make a very teeny tiny adjustment to its title…

I have always called it, If You Trust Me - An Onward Fanfiction. But in the now-three years since I first shared this story with you all, I’ve come to realize that it really is much more than just a fanfiction—it’s a fan-NOVEL. 33 chapters, plus a prologue and a mid-credits scene. A year and a half to write. A story I wanted to make as authentic as possible to the world of Onward we know and love. It is no mere fanfic.

That said, I hereby rename the long title of this story to If You Trust Me - An Onward Fan-Novel! And to my fellow QMs, if any of you are still out there and reading this, I have you all to thank for it. You guys were the first to really call it a "fan-novel" in the first place, and now in official type, it IS a fan-novel! I know we’ve all kinda moved on and everything, but seeing as it's been a while, I just wanna take the time to thank you all for being there for me in the Onward era of my life. You know who you are. Whenever I look back on all the times we had together, I think of only the good times. There were many good, if not great, things we did and accomplished together as a fellowship and I'll never forget that. As rough as life is and as strange as this world is and will continue to be, I can confidently say now that after taking some time, I only see the good in what we experienced in the end ❤️‍🔥

Lastly, there really aren’t enough words or thanks I can give to show how grateful I am of this fan-novel. Writing it, publishing it, having it read, shared, liked, and all that. I haven’t forgotten about that either.

I am still very proud of this story, and always will be. It helped me grow as a writer, and it was something I wanted to do for myself and for all Quest Masters/Onward fans out there. So to put it simply, thank you. And if there’s anyone who hasn’t read it yet and would like to, by all means! Trust me (no pun intended) when I say that it is a LOT better than all of the incest fics combined. If You Trust Me is a story for anyone who absolutely loves the world of Onward and is looking for something that totally feels like it! ✨

I guess the very last thing I’ll say is, I am well aware that this coming March, Onward will be turning 5 (AHHHHHH! I was Barley’s age (19) when this first came out, whaaaaaaaaaaat) and since that is a big year, I might want to do something special for that. I’m not sure what it will be yet, but I believe I could do something. A long in-hindsight written reflection perhaps? Or an ensemble cast drawing? Both? I haven’t decided yet.

But yeah, that’s it from me for now. I am not planning on posting anything more later, tomorrow, or anytime soon. This isn’t an “I’m back and here to stay” post necessarily. More like a “hello, it’s been a while, but I’m doing well and I just wanted to let you all know that, plus it's an anniversary” post 😊 That’s all folks!

He’s worked at Pixar for about as long as I’ve been alive and this is HIS moment

CD's Movie Poll #1 Winner

The Road to El Dorado

* fair warning: spoilers ahead *

Kicking off the start of my movie poll/movie watching series is Dreamworks’ The Road to El Dorado!

ngl this film has been on my watchlist for quite a while, and yet I never got around to actually watching it until now! (or rather, not until the other night lol) I’d heard so many great things about it before like the memorable characters, the kind of 2D animation that you really don’t see in Dreamworks films these days, and of course, the music!

I will say that I really enjoyed all three of those things in some ways and others 🤩

Right off the bat, Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh have really great chemistry! In fact, I loved their chemistry so much that I wanted to see footage of them recording their lines. so I legit looked up something like “road to el dorado behind the scenes” on youtube as soon as I finished watching the film and found that not only did they do ALL their voice recording sessions together in the same room but they also used plastic swords and playfully had it at each other!! AHHHHHH! so good!! 😂 ⚔️

but yeah they're hilarious! both on screen and behind it. I also just love the fact that both Kevin and Kenneth come from theater backgrounds cause I think that definitely added to how well they portrayed being con men 🎭

Ofc actors aside, some of you probably know this about me already, but I’m a BIG fan of dynamic duos when it comes to media...

I loved the straight man-ness that was Tulio, and he was probably my favorite of the two. I tend to like characters that find comfort in strategy, cause I tend to be that kinda person too. I know sometimes the logical and level-headed ones aren't always funny, entertaining, or the people to root for in the slightest. But Tulio definitely isn't one of them. I found myself chuckling at a good number of things he said and did like not believing in fate simply cause he relies on loaded dice for example, plus his sarcasm, and how much he tried to compose his patience as well

Miguel was great too! It was fun how much he loved the city of El Dorado and just wanted to take it all in, and his endless optimism of course! But he definitely needed more guitar playing scenes! idk there’s something about those characters who just have an instrument to play at the ready for dramatics that’s really humorous for me, it’s almost, if not totally, breaking the fourth wall in a way 😆

I also really enjoyed the Chief, I love how it’s implied that he knew all along Miguel and Tulio were humans and not gods and yet he still liked them and let them stay anyway. that said, it's kind of a shame that the pair didn't stay in el dorado cause there genuinely were people there who adored them when clearly the people of Spain didn’t…heck they didn't seem to have a problem that they weren't actually gods!

and you have to admit, Miguel and Tulio did match the stone art of the gods quite nicely, like the resemblance there was freaky 😳

Chel was great as well, her cleverness and way of sweet talking definitely stood out to me the most about her character, and I also really loved her voice! 😌

and Altivo the horse? I wanna say he was truly Miguel’s companion when compared to Tulio earning the heart of Chel. after all, Miguel was the one who wanted to rescue him and bring him along, and I was genuinely happy when they decided to bring him on their journey cause the horse wasn’t a bad guy, like he not only gave Tulio and Miguel the keys to escape the ship, but he wasn’t spiteful to them or anything. basically what I’m trying to say is he isn’t how Maximus treated Flynn Rider/Eugene Fitzherbert initially, horse to con man

As for the villain? well…this is the first of three times I’m gonna be saying, “I got some Aladdin vibes from this movie" 😅 👉👈 which isn’t completely a bad thing by any means! 

But yeah…I immediately got Jafar vibes the minute Tzekel-Kan came on screen (also I had to look up this name cause I didn’t catch it very well while I was watching this film, I just kept calling him “Priest Guy”)

I mean…the fact that he can do sorcery, on top of serving a sweet kind-hearted ruler, tangling with not just one but two thieves, anybody picking up what I’m putting down? Yeah that’s really all I gotta say about that guy 🤷🏻‍♀️

also I swear to god that Jim Cummings is in literally everything that was 2D-animated in the 1990s-2000s! and he's always gotta play that big tough guy. Again, that also reminded me of Aladdin. but then again the conquistador didn’t really have that big of a role in this, at the very least I just hope he gave T-K what he got coming to him

I guess just to get it out of the way, I was admittedly humming "One Jump Ahead" in the beginning when Tulio and Miguel are getting chased through the city, but that’s all there is in terms of Aladdin similarities the way i see it

lastly in terms of the characters and cast, I gotta give credit to Elton John for being part of it too! I mean who doesn't love a singing narrator? and he and Tim Rice did an awesome job crafting the soundtrack for this film. every song was absolutely BEAUTIFUL 🎶 ✨

Needless to say, the animation was 👌 and the opening sequence was definitely one of my favorites throughout the whole film as well as the expressions and the solid movements of the characters, very well done no question there. oh! and how there were just gold objects of anything from butterflies to apples in el dorado! they didn’t call it the city of gold for nothing! ✨✨✨

but in the end, did it really have go the route of the overall goal is get all the gold by the end only to actually lose most, if not all, of it by the end? I just feel like that plot line is done a lot in movies. tho to be fair, this was made in the 2000s so heck, it probably began that trend. But I’ve found in recent years that when it comes to treasure hunting movies, this exact scenario happens just repeatedly and it’s nothing new. I’d say movies like The Goonies and Uncharted are two that come to mind for me that have this happen...

Now there’s no way I can conclude my thoughts here without saying how AMAZING the “It’s Tough to Be a God” sequence was! I LOVED the “It's Tough to Be a God" sequence from the singing of the two leads to the colors to the everything about it, it was all magnificent! I'd arguably say it was my favorite scene in the whole film! And I'd be lying if I said that Miguel and Tulio’s version hasn't been stuck in my head ever since I watched it, because so help me it HAS and STILL IS and why that version is not on Spotify, I have no clue, but it SHOULD be. Again, props to Elton and Tim for writing this song and the others!!

So overall, I thought El Dorado was a great movie! It was definitely worth the watch! It's not perfect by any means, I'm not even sure it's my favorite Dreamworks film, but it was still very fun and entertaining all the same and I'm really glad that I finally got to see it after all these years! 🤗

But 'tis true Quest Masters!

A few weeks ago I decided to put on the purple socks and post flashcard ads of IYTM all over my campus!

It was a crazy idea. I knew it was crazy! But so far it's been working out great! I couldn't be happier! 😄

Now I can't help but look back on that scene with Ian talking to his father's college friend in Burger Shire and think, WOW I'm that bold, confident person now 🤯

To be honest, never in a million years did I think I'd be that bold person either...I mean really, it sounds crazy just to say that I'm bold when for years and years I was FAR from it and in some ways still working towards being that...lol

But I guess this truly shows how much I love this movie and how...it's not just relatable, it's inspiring 🤩

It's inspired me to take a stand and do great things! And fight for what's right ✊

Because I firmly believe that Onward, its world, its characters, its lore, all of it deserves more love and attention. Always 💙

And this story I wrote...it took me a year and a half to write! After all the hard work and love I put into it, I am SO damn proud of it. I just want the whole world to read it! And for all of you to feel the same happiness that I'm feeling right now. Because with COVID still out there...we all could use it 😉

But anyway...
