I Looked into some typography artists who caught my eye with either a specific project their style or with their creative practice.

A lot of this part of my research was aimed to help inspire me to find the joy within this brief and get me excited.

The bottom artist drew me in with their expressive lettering, I thought this sort of type is what I can see working for this idea of making a short film with typography included. I'm not sure that having a clean type theme would work for what I vision, but perhaps it is more that I just enjoy typography that is expressive more visually?

Reflecting on Sanchit's work I made use of analysing how he works with being a multidisciplinary designer and takes advantage of this. He uses a famous theories and makes a typographic response based of those theories. It is interesting to see how other typography artist translate non typographic elements into something they enjoy and the output becoming typographic eventually.

Diving deeper into his project about the 'interview between novelist Geetanjali Shree and translator Daisy Rockwell' I researched the term the designer mentions 'tedhi kheer' The term meaning not quite how it should be with a direct translation of 'crooked pudding'. The typographic response demonstrates difficulty in translating ideas across languages. Sanchit has represented two languages coming together by intertwining lettering and forms using a vibrant blue to pull more attention this detailing. The use of the black for the words translation shows that this is what the main subject is of the work it ensures there is a route and that this is clear to the audience.

The take away from this work to consider when I think about mine - clearly define eye paths in your work especially when working with two different subjects. Make this clear and apparent with obvious changes in the system I am using.

Tributes to guru Rajee Narayan

Rajee Narayan, who passed away recently, guided her students in both art and life

Rajee Narayan, consummate natyacharya and founder-director of Nritya Geetanjali, was adored by her disciples based across the world and admired by contemporary gurus and senior dancers.

“Simple and unassuming, she was active even at the age of 90. I was fortunate to partake in the silver and golden jubilee events of her institution and also her 80th birthday celebration. She was a great inspiration. We lived in close vicinity in Mumbai and interacted closely over the past several decades,” says veteran guru K. Kalyanasundaram.

Apart from Bharatanatyam, Rajee Narayan gave classes in Carnatic music and nattuvangam as well as in dance make-up and hairstyling. She has composed and published over 200 songs including varnams.

Ready to adapt

“She taught us all aspects of the art form. Every moment spent with her was a learning experience. It would be difficult to find another guru like her. She was traditional yet modern in her outlook, willing to adapt to the changing times,” says her senior disciple Jaishree Rao.

Jaishree recalls her last interaction with her guru in August. “She was anxious about her ailing son, Shyam Sundar, who was in hospital, but her eyes were alert. I felt that it would be my last performance in her presence.”

After her son’s demise on September 1, she moved to Delhi to stay with her foster daughter and grand niece, Mala Murali, where she died 25 days later.

“I was 13 when I came to live with amma in Mumbai after the demise of my mother. She was a strict disciplinarian but caring and loving too,” says Mala.

“Sometimes she would wake up in the middle of the night to write new compositions. Amma guided every student individually. She was also interested in gaining knowledge about electronics, medicine and learning languages such as Urdu and Persian,” she recalls.

Rajee Narayan guided her students beyond music and dance, teaching them social skills and etiquette. She made sure there was food for students who came for class straight from college. And she would take her students to restaurants for a treat after performances.

“She had a lovely collection of saris and would happily give them away if any student liked one,” says Mala. “My childhood memories are mostly of this dance class, where my sister and I spent a lot of time,” says student Priya Natesh.

Jaya Ramamurthy is proud to have been associated with Rajee Narayan for the past 45 years. “She was my music guru and I used to sing for all her dance programmes. She was adept at writing lyrics, composing music, singing and choreography,” she says.

“A musicologist, researcher and scholar, Rajee mami was a compassionate and soft-spoken person,” says Gayatri Subramaniam, recalling the 15 years spent with her guru.

Like the perfect guru, Rajee Narayan stays embodied in her students.

There, they discover magical keys that grant them access to a variety of powers and are subsequently hunted by a demon who also wants the keys. Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet When: February 7 Where: Apple TV+ From the creative team of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia — Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Megan Ganz — comes a new comedy about a team of video game developers who are working on a very popular title. McElhenney also stars alongside Danny Pudi (Community), F. Murray Abraham (Homeland), Imani Hakim (Everybody Hates Chris), and David Hornsby (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia). High Maintenance When: February 8 Where: Hotstar In its fourth season on HBO — after six on Vimeo as a Web series — Ben Sinclair's weed delivery guy The Guy has a new canine companion in the sidecar of his new transport vehicle, a bike. Events will be spread out across a year and focus on “cycles of renewal, webs of human connections, and putting down roots” in New York. Nick Kroll, Rebecca Hall, Larry Owens, and Calvin Leon Smith join returning guest stars. Brooklyn Nine-Nine When: February 10 Where: Comedy Central The much-loved comedy enters its seventh season with a bit of shake-up at the 9-9 again, as Andre Braugher's Captain Holt is knocked down to a traffic beat cop owing to the events of the sixth season finale. Nicole Bilderback (Dawson's Creek) takes his place as the new chief. Both Lin-Manuel Miranda and Chelsea Peretti, who play Amy Santiago's brother and Gina Linetti, are expected to guest star. Well, for what it's worth, Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) will return for the final time in the eighth season of this spy thriller. As she recovers from her imprisonment in a Russian gulag, she will also need to help her mentor Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), who as National Security Advisor to the US President, is sent to Afghanistan to work on peace with the Taliban. Narcos: Mexico When: February 13 Where: Netflix In the second season of this spin-off, Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna) struggles to maintain control over his growing empire, thanks to friction between the various “plazas” that are part of his Guadalajara cartel, the torrent of American retribution thanks to the death of DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña) in the first season, and the actions of maverick DEA agent Walt Breslin (Scoot McNairy), who leads Operation Leyenda. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver When: February 17 Where: Hotstar The titular comedian returns with his titular weekly news satire show for the seventh year. HBO hasn't announced what topics will be tackled — the trailer below is a celebration of season 6 — though the 2020 American election season will no doubt prominently feature across the season, which traditionally ends in November, around the same time a new US President will be elected.
