ARTIST ANALYSIS
Moving Southwark by Jevan Chowdhury
Jevan Chowdhury was born in March, 1978 in London, United Kingdom. He is a professional film maker that has worked for Dance UK for a commissioned dance shoot, and his main focus is definitely filming or photographing dance. He owns his own studio called ‘Wind and Foster studios’ which he founded and he mostly works on his own projects which are sponsored by a variety of companies. In an interview, Chowdhury said that he “learnt Russian Ballet for two years as a child. Now as a filmmaker I’ve rekindled my interest. I love dance in all forms choreographed or unchoreographed. I find rhythmic movement fascinating,” so his love for dance inspired him to actually film it as a career. This particular work that I’m analysing by him is set in Southwark, London, however it is part of a huge project of his called ‘Moving Cities’ in which he travels across the whole world and films dancers in the street. The location is Urban as all of it is filmed outside on busy streets or on top of buildings. I don’t think his films are made to make money or sell anything, Chowdhury connects with dancers and dance companies from the city he is in and films with them for his own project, however for certain films, they have been commissioned, for example he made a dance film for Westfield and East London Dance. Each dancer in this piece interacts a lot with their environment and really connects with their surroundings, for example the very first girl we see is lying on the pavement and dancing across the floor, on her back and front while contracting and releasing. As the music and poetry speed up and get more intense, we see the surroundings get a lot more busy, one girl is lying on the pavement, slowly moving as the camera pans above her but instead of being alone, pedestrians pass by her in a hurry, which shows a lot of contrast as she’s moving so slowly and they move by so fast. In most of Chowdhury’s ‘Moving Cities’ films, each one tells it’s own little story and it’s usually about isolation or the dance itself, but this film has poetry as well as music, so the dance follows that poem. This poem is mostly about dying as it mentions “You reach a moment in life when the dead outnumber the living” and about how as you get older you notice death and signs of getting older more, like burden and worry. It later says “We people, we move through the streets like strangers,” so in a big city like London, we don’t acknowledge each other at all, we don’t show any emotion towards another person we see across the street. I think each dancer represents someone who has died, as they move so slowly and never get up off of the floor, at some points in the poem, she relates a certain aspect of a person to a single dancer, showing that they have died. However they are now consumed by the city, as the poem says, even when people die the city keeps moving, people don’t stop, but the only time they stop in this film is to take pictures of one of the dancers who is lying dead on the floor. The end is a lot more intense as each dancer speeds up as each dancer expresses themselves more and at the end, the woman repeats the beginning of the poem again, showing that nothing has really changed.Watching this film definitely makes me feel quite melancholy and low because it shows how we as a society look over things, even death and never even stop to look, we just carry on and each dancer has their own story to tell, accompanied by the poet who voices these exact feelings. I think the strongest feature of this film is the composition; almost everything is filmed from a bird's eye view, which allows the viewer to focus on the dancer (who faces the camera) and not the passers by. It also adds to the theme of death, it looks like someone is looking down at all these people who have died, who are all telling their story of how they died and how the city is consuming them. I also enjoy it because even though it’s about the city, we don’t see the typical city skylines or buildings, we see if from a different angle yet still know exactly what’s going on.The use of colours is very interesting in this film, a lot of depth and emotion is added because all the dancers are in monochromatic colours which definitely emphasises the sad feeling and adds to the darker atmosphere, and the woman reading the poem is also in black and white, connecting her to the dancers, but her emotion is very different, she’s very raw and outspoken, she has a lot of passion but she’s also very relaxed, so the lack of colour is quite calming, instead of being dull or upsetting. I love this short film by Chowdhury, his entire ‘Moving Cities’ project is the best I have ever seen, but this one really resonated with me because of the emotion and also the use of poetry. Poetry is a favourite of mine and I write a lot of my own, so this definitely inspires me to include some of my own into my work on top of the music. I really enjoy the composition of this piece also, filming from above is not what you usually see with dance so it adds an element of something unique in his work, so I would like to experiment with my camera angles for my work.
