Hurricane Beryl has ripped off roofs in Jamaica, battered fishing boats in Barbados and damaged or destroyed 95% of homes on two islands in St Vincent and the Grenadines before rumbling toward the Cayman Islands and Mexico’s Caribbean coast. At least seven people have died as a result of the storm so far. What had been the earliest storm to develop into a Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic weakened slightly but remains a major hurricane. Its eye was forecast to pass just south of the Cayman Islands overnight. Mexico’s popular Caribbean coast prepared shelters, evacuated some small outlying coastal communities and even moved sea turtle eggs off beaches threatened by storm surge, but in nightlife hotspots like Playa del Carmen and Tulum tourists still enjoyed one more night on the town. Mexico’s navy patrolled areas like Tulum, telling tourists in Spanish and English to prepare for the storm’s arrival. Early on Thursday morning, the storm’s centre was about 500 miles east-southeast of Tulum, Mexico.

Maria Jacobini in Beatrice Cenci (1926)
flickr
Maria Jacobini in Beatrice Cenci (1926) by Truus, Bob & Jan too! Via Flickr: Italian postcard by G.B. Falci Ed. for Unica - Ciocolato Talmone al latte. Photo: Pittaluga Film. Maria Jacobini in Beatrice Cenci (Baldassarre Negroni, 1926). Among the Italian divas, Maria Jacobini (1892-1944) was an island of serenity, as Vittorio Martinelli expressed it, the personification of goodness, of simple love. Her weapon was her sweet and gracious smile. However, in some Italian and later German films, she could also play the vivacious lady, the femme fatale, the comedienne, the hysterical victim, and the suffering mother or wife. Maria Jacobini was born in Rome, Italy, in 1892. She was the sister of actress Diomira Jacobini. Their older sister Bianca had also started as an actress but had interrupted her career after four films. Maria studied at the Accademia di Arte Drammatica di S. Cecilia, where her teachers were Virginia Marini and Eduardo Boutet. She made her stage debut at the company of Cesare Dondini Jr., where she mainly played secondary parts. She was noticed by Ugo Falena, artistic director of the film company Film d'Arte Italiana. He offered her work in the silent cinema. Her first short films were Lucrezia Borgia/Lucretia Borgia (Ugo Falena, 1910) featuring diva Francesca Bertini, and Beatrice Cenci (Ugo Falena, 1910), but her first important role was in Cesare Borgia (Gerolamo Lo Savio, 1912) again starring Bertini. In 1912, Maria started to work at the Savoia company of Turin, as a seductive man-eater in short films like Pantera/Panther (1912), La zingara/The gypsy (Sandro Camasio, 1912), and L'onta nascosta/The hidden shame (1912). From 1913 on, she played her more dramatic roles as the lead in Giovanna d'Arco/Joan of Arc (Ubaldo Maria del Colle, 1913) and Ananke (Nino Oxilia, 1915) with Leda Gys and her sister Diomira Jacobini. Jacobini worked for pioneering film studios like Pasquali and Celio. Maria gave good performances in the melancholic Come le foglie/Like the Leaves (Gennaro Righelli, 1916) based on Giuseppe Giacosa's stage play, and in the touching Addio Giovinezza/Good-bye Youth (Augusto Genina, 1918). She made a series of films with director Gennaro Righelli such as Il viaggio/The Journey (1921), based on a novel by Luigi Pirandello, and Cainà - la figlia dell'isola/Cainà - the Daughter of the Island (1923), shot in Sardinia. After the First World War, the Italian film industry was in a deep crisis, and director Gennaro Righelli and his star Maria Jacobini decided to move to Germany. In Berlin, the new centre of the European film industry, Jacobini and Righelli were enlisted by producer Jakob Karoll and they founded a separate company called Maria Jacobini GmbH. Jacobini first starred in Bohème - Künstlerliebe/Bohème - Artists Love (Gennaro Righelli, 1923), playing the tormented and suffering Mimi. Her film partner was Wilhelm Dieterle, who would later become known as Hollywood director William Dieterle. She often performed in Righelli's German films and other directors' films. Jaap Speyer directed her in Bigamie/Bigamy (1927), Robert Dinesen in Ariadne im Hoppegarten (1928) with Alfred Abel, Richard Oswald in Villa Falconieri (1928) opposite Hans Stüwe, and by Fedor Ozep in the German-Russian coproduction Der lebende Leichnam/Zhivoy trup/The Living Corpse (1929), based on the play by Leo Tolstoy. These productions were shot all over Europe, and Jacobini even filmed in Africa for Die Frauengasse von Algier/The Street of Women of Algiers (Wolfgang Hoffmann-Harnisch, 1927) with Camilla Horn. In the second half of the 1920s, Maria Jacobini performed also in a few Italian films such as La bocca chiusa/Shut up(Guglielmo Zorzi, 1925) opposite Lido Manetti a.k.a. Arnold Kent and Carmen Boni, Beatrice Cenci (Baldassarre Negroni, 1926), and Il carnevale di Venezia/The carnival of Venice (Mario Almirante, 1928). In France, she did Maman Colibri/Mother Hummingbird (Julien Duvivier, 1929) with Franz Lederer. It was her final silent film. With the coming of the sound cinema, Jacobini's roles became marginal, though she continued to play in films until her death. In 1937 she became a teacher in acting at the new Roman film academy Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, where she gave lessons to new stars and actresses such as Alida Valli and Clara Calamai. Her final film was La donna della montagna/The Mountain Woman (Renato Castellani, 1943) with Marina Berti. aria Jacobini died a year later, in 1944 in Rome. She was 52. Sources: Vittorio Martinelli (Le dive del silenzio), Caterina Cerra (Treccani - Italian), Wikipedia (English and Italian) and IMDb. And, please check out our blog European Film Star Postcards.

The Widow's Best of 2023
Tumblr media
Jane Hobson 2023: Following such a desperate year for so many in the world this quotation by Nietzsche seems pertinent. "We have art in order not to die of the truth." So, in an effort to uplift whoever might read this, here's a somewhat curtailed list of a few of our favourite things we've seen this year. It wasn't the hottest time for live shows; we walked out of five! One every few years, maybe, but five! Disappointing. However we still managed to find some wonderful things, not all of them new. Let's begin with…
MOST SPECTACULAR: Phelim McDermott's Akhnaten at the London Coliseum. We'd been asked so many times: "Have you seen Akhnaten?" No, we hadn't but now we have and, OK, it's a Philip Glass opera (pictured above and below) but really, with a set by Tom Pye and costumes by Kevin Pollard it's a full-on feast for the senses, with the ever-inventive Gandini Juggling, choreographed by Sean Gandini, doing what they do best.
Tumblr media
Jane Hobson BEST CIRCUS SHOW: Cirque Le Roux's thrilling and ambitious Entre Chiens et Louves – staged at Le Bon Marché department store in Paris (take note Selfridges) – took our breath away even without the sublime Lolita Costet in the cast; and Circa's Humans II at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at London's Southbank Centre.
COMPANY TO WATCH: Hoops Désolé! A “crazy” six-strong troupe of artists drawn from the circus school in Quebec, Cirque du Soleil and Cirque Éloize.
Tumblr media
Emma Kauldhar BEST DANCE: Wayne McGregor’s Woolf Works at London’s Royal Opera House, with the mesmerising Alessandra Ferri, who at 59 was the same age as Virginia Woolf when she died. Another dancer with astonishing longevity is the Spanish Lucía Lacarra, now 48, who appeared in the Ballet Icons Gala at the London Coliseum.
BEST SHOWBIZ MEMOIR: Walking Through Walls by performance artist Marina Abramović; Do It For Your Mum by Roy Wilkinson, then manager of his brothers' band British Sea Power.
Tumblr media
MOST TERRIFYING: He's done some daring things in his time and on World Circus Day Hungarian high-wire artist Laci Simet performed a sensational walk across the River Danube – 40 metres up in the wind – with only a balance pole to keep him safe.
BEST FILM: German film Afire or Roter Himmel by Christian Petzold (he’ll never let you down); Babak Jalali’s Fremont, set in a fortune cookie factory; and the Mexican film The Empty Hours directed by Aarón Fernández.
Tumblr media
BEST ARCHIVE PIC: Josephine Baker and Dalida at L’Olympia music hall in Paris in 1968. A legendary pair!
LONGEST-SERVING FEMALE DJ: Texan Mary McCoy, who at 85 has been on the air for almost 72 years, and entered the Guinness Book of Records.
BEST DESERT ISLAND DISCS CASTAWAY: Actor/comedian/writer and so on, Adrian Edmondson; snooker star Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Tumblr media
MOST INSPIRING: The Maricarmen dance school in Chorrillos, south of Lima, in Peru, run by retired dancer Maria del Carmen Silva, offers free classes to girls of all abilities from low-income areas.
BEST DOCUMENTARY: Never Be a Punching Bag for Nobody by indie rock musician Naomi Yang; My Indiana Muse, in which artist Robert Townsend discovers his Kodachrome muse, Helen.
Tumblr media
FOND FAREWELL: Actor David McCallum, who, as The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’s Illya Kuryakin was an enduring heartthrob for a certain generation of girls and women. Closer to home the UK lost its leading circus director, Phillip Gandey (above), at 67, whose shows – including Cirque Surreal, The Chinese State Circus and The Lady Boys of Bangkok – were always far and away the most creative and exciting; and The Circus of Horrors – a show I reviewed more times than any other, except perhaps Cirque du Soleil – lost its co-creator and frontman, Doktor Haze (below) at 66. Along with Gerry Cottle, they were notable as two of the nicest circus men I met during my reviewing years, and are greatly missed.
Tumblr media
LAST WORD: It wouldn't be a Widow Stanton 'Best of' without some showgirls. This picture was taken by the Argentinian photographer Luisita Escarria, who with her sister Chela, documented all the artists appearing in revues in Buenos Aires from 1958 to 2009. Their story and wondrous archive might have been lost had it not been rescued by filmmakers Sol Miraglia and Hugo Manso. Their documentary Foto Estudio Luisita will warm your heart… and fortunately both the sisters lived long enough to see it.

In Valencia, tradition and modernity merge
Tumblr media
Valencia’s L’Escorxador del Cabanyal people’s archive and cultural institute was originally a slaughterhouse
David prefers to be out and about at dawn, after the last night owls have left the pubs and bars in the old town. When the coaches have not yet spit out holidaymakers in front of the mighty, medieval city gate Torres de Serranos and before the café owners open their parasols on the Plaza de la Virgen.
The square where the Romans founded Valencia around 2000 years ago and where a fountain decorated with figures bubbles up today.
At dawn, David de Limón has the Barrio del Carmen, the oldest quarter of the Mediterranean metropolis, to himself. But David is not drawn to the stately buildings, not to the cathedral, in which great architectural history - Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque - is shown in a small space. Not to the museums full of Roman ruins or modern art.
A quarter in transition
David is drawn into the network of countless alleys and winding streets that characterize the district. The labyrinth of streets in the old town is the neighbourhood of the 40-year-old, who has made a name for himself as a street artist. His works adorn walls and projections, old facades and sometimes the fronts of cafés or shops - if he has been commissioned to do so.
Most of his motifs show a masked person dressed in black, often adorned with a red heart, occasionally holding a spray can: a street artist who, like David, can be seen here and there in the old town.
Barrio del Carmen has changed a lot since David was a child. "Our parents used to forbid us to walk on certain streets," he says. Many houses, you can still feel that today, were left to decay and were considered dangerous drug trading centres. But a lot has happened.
City dwellers and newcomers have rediscovered the maze of streets for themselves, whose alleys and squares have been largely closed to cars and invite you to stroll and explore. And street art, which has always been a part of the neighbourhood, has been increasingly appreciated and tolerated in recent years. It now belongs to the Barrio del Carmen just like the countless small tapas bars, shops and galleries.
Big and small changes
"Valencia has always had its ups and downs," explains architect Boris Strzelczyk. Like David de Limón, he lives in the Barrio del Carmen. There were phases in which the city grew rapidly. Just like in the 15th century, when production and trade in silk and other goods brought money into the city coffers and buildings like the Gothic Silk Exchange were built. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Or at the beginning of the 20th century, when the cultivation of oranges brought wealth to Valencia again and magnificent buildings in Modernism, a form of Art Nouveau, were built in and around the old town. Among them, for example, the North Station decorated with mosaics.
Today, according to the architect Strzelczyk, it is above all the many projects that appear inconspicuous at first glance that make Spain's third-largest city, with almost 800,000 inhabitants, more attractive: countless cycle paths that have been created or expanded in recent years, revived residents' markets and repaired parks .
Capital for design - and that's not all
The administration is also focusing on digital services, accessibility and reducing car traffic. The goal: the city is to become completely CO2-neutral in tourism by 2025 and by 2030.
Initiatives that have helped a jury of the European Commission to elect Valencia the capital of intelligent tourism[1]. And because craftsmanship and Mediterranean design are very important in the city, it can boast another award: it is the World Design Capital 2022 (WDC)[2]. "Most people think of concrete objects when they think of design," says WDC program director Corinna Heilmann. "You can also design a lifestyle."
In fact, just looking out of the plane window as you approach the city is enough to see what Valencia has to offer besides alleyways full of street art and ancient history.
There is the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea and the beaches that stretch along it like golden stripes. Or the Jardín del Turia, the longest park in Spain, which meanders nine kilometres through the city like a green belt. And the "City of Arts and Sciences", an ensemble of seemingly organic buildings by star architect and son of the city Santiago Calatrava, which rise like huge sculptures in the south-east of the park.
Of course, the sun is also decisive for the Mediterranean feeling in the city. It shines here around 300 days a year.
Between past and present
"The overall package is right in Valencia," says Corinna Heilmann. The flair, the culture of enjoyment, the long tradition of craftsmanship and design.
Raquel Vidal and Pedro Paz from Canoa Lab[3] agree. The two ceramic artists have housed their studio in a former car wash in the lively Barrio Ruzafa. Once the summer residence of the Moors, it is now a popular nightlife and shopping district.
"Ceramic design has a long history in Valencia," says Raquel, while her fingers deftly shape the wet clay. "Ceramics have been fired in this region since the Neolithic Age, and later tiles and floor tiles were shipped from here all over the world."
Their works are reminiscent of vessels from the Romans and Arabs. With this, Raquel and Pedro want to build a bridge between the past and the present, putting old forms in a new, contemporary context.
The ceramic designers find inspiration in the city: in the historical museums, in buildings decorated with tiles and ceramic jewellery, in the colours and shapes that Valencia supplies them with.
Create something new out of the old
A thought shared by fashion designer Alba García. With her label Cache Croche[4], she continues the city's silk tradition. She creates new clothes from old fabrics in a patchwork-like manner. García takes up traditional patterns and motifs in her collection and recycles waste products: she cleans plastic waste washed up from the Mediterranean Sea, melts it down and uses it to make jewellery.
"Slow fashion is important to me," says García. "And circular economy. I want to bring back to life what others throw away, while at the same time connecting to Valencian traditions and history."
The works of Ana Milena Hernández and Christophe Penasse's award-winning interior design and product studio Masquespacio[5], which has long been known far beyond Spain's borders, also show how design and history can go hand in hand in a city.
For example in the design of La Sastrería[6], a restaurant in the maritime Barrio Cabanyal. "We strolled through the district for days, looked at what we found here, what makes this place special," says Hernández. "And we did that."
Tumblr media
The result: wooden chairs with vertical struts, which are intended to be reminiscent of the fishermen's boats. White-bluish colours that evoke the encounter between the beach and the ocean, and glossy glazed tiles that adorn the walls and counter.
A potpourri of shapes and colours
Like the old town, the district of Cabanyal, which borders the wide beach of Malvarrosa near the seaport, has been developing for a few years. "For 17 years, the residents have protested against the radical re-planning of their district," explains architect Boris Strzelczyk.
The former city government had planned to cut a monumental avenue across the district, which would have led to the demolition of hundreds of buildings, some of which are listed. Houses that the residents of the former fishing village decorated with tiles and other decorative elements at the beginning of the 20th century, based on the noble Modernism buildings in the city centre. A colourful potpourri of shapes and colours in which no two houses are alike.
Since this plan was scrapped after a change of government, the district has flourished. Here, too, it is design, craftsmanship and architecture that bring hidden gems back to life.
Traditional and modern
An example of this is the district's new city archive and cultural institute,[7] which will deliberately not be given a modern location, but will move into a former slaughterhouse that was renovated and carefully expanded under Strzelczyk's leadership.
"During the renovation we discovered graffiti, murals, hand-painted wall tiles and the cement tiles typical of Valencia, which we integrated," explains the architect. They were either left in place and highlighted, or used elsewhere in the building. A concept of sustainability shared by many architects, craftsmen and designers. And who makes the Mediterranean metropolis what it is.
A city that builds on its traditions and at the same time looks ahead with a good sense of modern ideas.

Ceremonial Maya Cave Site Discovered
Archaeologists have discovered a ceremonial cave site in Chemuyil on the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, that dates from the Postclassic Maya period.
The Maya believed that the universe was divided into the sky, the earth, and the underworld, in which caves functioned as a portal or gateway to Xibalba, an underworld realm ruled by the Maya death gods and their helpers.
The Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH was notified of the site by personnel from the civil association Círculo Espeleológico del Mayab and the Urban Cenotes Project of Playa del Carmen, who identified archaeological remains whilst mapping cave systems in the region.
A team was dispatched under the direction of archaeologist Antonio Reyes, who found two vessels, one complete and one fragmented, as well as a tripod bowl that date from the Late Postclassic Maya (1200–1550 AD).
The first is a Navulá-type monochrome vessel which still has one of its two handles, whilst the second is a globular pot, which was found fragmented because of tree roots that crushed the vessel against some rocks.
Both vessels were positioned in natural niches where water dripped down from stalactites, whilst the tripod bowl was placed face down and covered with stones. The researchers believe that the bowl was a ceremonial offering, whilst the two vessels were used for the ritual collection of water from the stalactites.
Although there are no major Maya centres within Chemuyil, the people living in the area between Playa del Carmen and Tulum often used many of the natural cavities, cenotes and cave systems for ceremonial purposes.
