rose’s voice is quiet. meek. andreas looks at her, a frown on his face.

“you knew the whole time?”

“most of it yes.” rose looks at him. “it was an accident dre. a mistake. a beautiful one, but a mistake nonetheless.”

the baby in her arms gurgles. samuel is his name, after rose’s uncle, and after the prophet. andreas has never been a religious man, but he wonders if this is a warning. a message of sorts.

the first child of their generation, born in the midst of a war. an earth fairy, if his parents genetics have anything to do with it. a child of peace.

it’s ironic, he thinks as he watches rose stare at her son.

his own son will be born in a few weeks. the idea of being a father is terrifying. he’s only 20. rose is 19, and has been a mother for nearly 6 months.

rosalind would kill them for growing soft. for forgetting their soldierly duty. he wonders if the old bat ever wanted children. if that choice was stripped away from her like so many other choices were.

he shakes his head. “you’re an idiot.”

rose doesn’t say anything in reply.

he sighs, spinning his knife in his hand. the blade almost cuts his finger and he relishes in the panic he feels.

“but you’re also my best friend. give me the boy.” he puts his knife down, and rose hands him sam - all ruddy cheeks and gently closed eyes.

“you better not be like your mum. the world can only handle so much unrighteous anger.” he mutters to the child. the baby gurgles in his sleep before spitting up.

a fair point, andreas thinks as he rocks him back and forth. a very fair point.

the two have decided to wait until the weather is a bit nicer and save up for a beautiful destination wedding. in the meantime, andrea has asked how midori would feel about starting their family! midori was all for it (honestly, ‘science baby’ was all she needed to hear - what a great experiment idea!) so andrea went ahead with the procedure and is now pregnant. baby berrie coming soon!

the  radio  clicks  to  life,   always  the  lowest  sound,   hopefully  just  for  her  ears.   not  that  it  matters,   if  andrea  was  in  a  dire  situation  that  involved  staying  quiet;   it  would  be  off.    blue  eyes  close,  eyelashes  fluttering.   she  breathes  it,   tries  to  keep  the  smile  off  her  features,  but  it  stays.   andrea’s  knees  were  starting  to  ache,  leaning  in  the  spot  she  was.   it  was  this  old  house,   probably  falling  apart  even  before  the  apocalypse.   walls  crumbling,   second  story  floor  creaks.   it’s  probably  going  to  fall  in,   but  that’s  where  she  is.   a  little  hideout,   just  surveying  the  land.   their  factory  isn’t  too  far,   you  can  get  a  good  look  out  for  hordes  or  troublemakers  or  something  fancier.
