A fashionable collection to commemorate the Year of the Tiger
Tumblr media
"Chakradhara" is a collection that weaves together the tiger's stripes, its kinship with nature, and its commitment to sustainability while evoking the very best of Indian craftsmanship and culture. This project expresses a passion for tigers that has the potential to significantly improve Indian audiences' awareness of and still-evolving attitudes toward the preservation of the species, of nature, and of our forested regions. With their distinctive handloom project "Chakradhara," Warp 'n Weft, a textile company that creates pure handloom Banarasi textiles, partners with WWF India to commemorate the Year of the Tiger and the conservation efforts to help the animal's flourishing population. Shraman Jha, Director-Marketing, Communications and Fundraising WWF India, said: "It is a unique partnership bringing together the two national heritages of India- handlooms and tigers together. Five decades of dedicated efforts to conserve tigers in India has brought out some significant results, a thriving population of big cats, the highest among all tiger range countries. We thank Warp 'n Weft for conceptualising and weaving the banarasi handloom collection to celebrate the tiger." On National Handloom Day, threading and working with the Banarasi Handloom under the vision and passionate enterprise of the Founder Sagrika Rai, for the upliftment and promotion of this artisanal craftsmanship and empowerment of weavers in the industry. Emphasizing the relevance of the project 'Chakradhara', MsSagrika Rai, Founder & Creative Director, Warp 'n Weft, said: "It is a strong, impactful collaboration between two ethical institutions. We pledge to contribute a part of the sales proceeds to WWF India, contributing to nature and wildlife conservation. We hope this handwoven project will further bring the deserved boost to tiger conservation and spread the word far and wide". A wildlife enthusiast, Rai's husband, Dinkar Rai- took a picture of a tiger in Bandhavgarh National Reserve, which was used as the central basis for this project. Smitten by the beauty of the majestic Bengal Tiger, the team at Warp 'n Weft created a tiger face graphed, loomed, and engineered to precision. After many iterations got close to the original photograph with the ethnic style of nakshikadhwa, a signaturetechnique of Banarasi Handloom weaving. The commitment to sustainability has remained paramount throughout this process, commissioning the grassroots master weavers from the historic handloom clusters of Varanasi with decades-long experience. The base texture of the fabric is a combination of natural yarns that harkens to the forest grasslands of India, 'Chakradhara', the lively meadows inside the Bandhavgarh National Reserve- taking inspiration from where the photo was taken. APG & SPG Kolkata organizes Joint Technical Session
Association of Petroleum Geologists (APG) and Society of Petroleum Geophysicists (SPG), Kolkata Chapter jointly conducted a technical session on 19 March 2018 with the theme “Major Gondwana Basins of India- Problems and Prejudices”. This technical session was attended by all the APG and SPG members of Kolkata Chapter and distinguished retired dignitaries.(L-R) ED-Basin Manager and patron APG & SPG Kolkata Chapter C Mahapatra welcoming Prof. D P Sengupta ; Prof. D P Sengupta delivering the lectureRecently the focus of exploration is emphasizing the search for Coal Bed Methane (CBM) and Shale Gas in the Gondwana sequences of the Sedimentary basins of India in addition to exploration of Conventional Hydrocarbon. Hence the technical session was organised to address the various issues related to the exploration of Conventional hydrocarbon, Coal Bed Methane and Shale Gas in Indian sedimentary basins. The lecture was delivered by Dept. of Geological Sciences, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata Prof. Dhurjati Prasad Sengupta, as an Industry-Academia interaction.Prof. D P Sengupta is an eminent Biostratigrapher in Dept. of Geological Sciences, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. He has rich experience in the domain of Biostratigraphy of Lower and Upper Gondwana sequences of Indian Basins. He has been working on Gondwana stratigraphy and vertebrate paleontology with interests in morphometrics and shape analysis of fossil vertebrates. He has carried out extensive research work; mainly field based on Gondwanas of India and abroad and has erected many new vertebrate taxa and used metamorphic techniques for the first time on Indian Gondwana vertebrate. The session started with brief presentation about the activities and future plans of APG & SPG Kolkata Chapter by Joint Secretary, APG, Kolkata Chapter, Mr G C Deb, DGM (G) and Secretary, SPG, Kolkata Chapter, Mr P K Bose, DGM (GP) respectively followed by the lecture & presentation by Prof. D P Sengupta. The Brief Synopsis of the talk is as follows:The Gondwana deposits of peninsular India are revisited with the light of new information and ideas. The Gondwana sediments of peninsular India rest on Pre-Cambrian basement and the early Paleozoic deposits are absent in the peninsular part. Some problems and prejudices are inherent to the Indian Gondwanas.Traditionally, the Gondwana starts with a glacial to fluvio-glacial and glacio-marine Formation called the Talchir. Whether Talchir starts from Carboniferous or Permian-- is the initial question which still remains debatable. The coal regime that followed Talchir is present in all the Permian Gondwana deposits of the southern continents of the world. In fact, the glacial and coaly part with characteristics of Glossopteris-Gangamopteris flora are present in all the Gondwana deposits of India, Australia, Antarctica, South Africa and Argentina. However, the Triassic ‘Red bed’ that followed Coal-shale-sandstone deposits is not at all restricted in Gondwana. It is a global phenomenon with a global flora and fauna. Continental Triassic sediments, at different parts of peninsular India, differentially fill up the initial rift system that created the Gondwana basins. They also have different fault patterns and sediment loads. Thus, they are not uniform and difficult to correlate among different Gondwana basins of India. On the other hand, overall characteristic lithology (Red Mudstone), flora and particularly, the universal terrestrial fauna make the correlation of Triassic red beds easier in global scale. Thus, during Triassic, Gondwana lost its character as “restricted rift deposits in southern continents”. This creates a problem whether to include Triassic part within Gondwana or not.In case of the non-marine Jurassic, the story is different for peninsular India. There are very few non-marine Jurassic litho-formations in peninsular India. Most of Indian Jurassics (Peninsular) are marine. Similarly, in Cretaceous, non-marine sediments of Satpura and that of a small part of Pranhita-Godavari basin, are directly overlying the Gondwanas. Other so called “Cretaceous upper Gondwana” sediments are lying on different basements, but not on Gondwana. They are lithologically different from typical Gondwanas. The flora of Jurassic and Cretaeous, the typical “upper Gondwana flora” is actually a global flora that happened to be present in the “upper Gondwana”.With all these doubts and indecisive evidences mentioned above, Indian Gondwanas, are still thought to be unified successions with a span of Carboniferous to Cretaceous. However, this concept needs serious rethinking.(L-R) President , APG,Kolkata Chapter, S K Das addressing the gathering ; President , SPG,Kolkata Chapter, S Chakraborty addressing the gathering(L-R) APG Jt. Secretary G.C Deb briefing activities of APG, Kolkata Chapter ; SPG Secretary P K Bose briefing activities of SPG, Kolkata ChapterThe technical session ended with the concluding remarks of ED-Basin Manager, MBA Basin Kolkata and Patron APG & SPG Kolkata Chapter, Mr. Chakradhara Mahapatra. He opined that Industry-Academia interaction of such nature is very helpful for ONGC in the long run and more such talks can be organised in future. He urged the participants to discuss and debate ideas, policies & strategies that would allow more comprehensive exploration of the region so as to conclude in a more definitive manner about this region. He also complimented all the SPG and APG members, Kolkata Chapter for organising this technical session.APG & SPG members, Kolkata Chapter participating in the Techical SessionAPG & SPG Patron, Kolkata Chapter C. Mahapatra concluding the sesionThe session was compered by Sr. Geophysicist(S), member SPG, Kolkata Chapter Ms. Supriya Shukla and concluded with vote of thanks by Sr. Geologist, member APG, Kolkata Chapter Mr. Arun Debasis.

“The forest is testing you” my friend murmured with conviction. I sat on the chair closing my eyes as I let his words and the December breeze in one of the most famous tiger destinations in the world soothe me. It has been 26 safaris accounting to almost a year and half which has already included 3 visits to Bandhavgarh that has not yielded any glimpse of the striped beauty. Ironical it may sound but one of the best places in the world to see wild free roaming tiger yet has not opened up its secret to me. In that trip, I made up my mind- I am never going to be-friend Bandhavgarh and shall come back till the sun of good fortune peeps out from the eclipse covering my luck.
As promised, I came back in the month of May carrying the baggage of missed chances and lack of fortune only to see 7 tigers in the first safari and my 3 days stint presented my with 14 different Tigers and over 26 sightings. That trip I learnt my biggest lesson-Nature answers to those who wait and loyalty is indeed a virtue in the forest.

Map of Bandhavgarh

Bandhavgarh is like a collection of tiger poem set in the background of rich history that still whispers its presence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Landscaped by a 2000-year-old fort, which is believed to be a gift of Lord Ram for his brother Lakshman, this 434 sq Km is a jewel that shines as one of the most important Tigers habitats on this planet.
The perfume of history here mixes with the legacy of fabled tigers from the past. Charger, B2, Bamera, Sita are few names that have been the symbol of the species and the reason that has placed Bandhavgarh in the epitome of desire.
The area is divided into three zones, Tala, Magadhi and Khitouli along with the buffer area that provides us lesser mortals with an opportunity to encounter the extra ordinary.
From vast landscapes to bamboo clutters resigning to the wisdom of Saal trees, Badhavgarh offers you an unlimited quantum of visual delight topped with its feline charm.
Bandhavgarh 2017
It is one of the best seasons Bandhavgarh has seen in a long while. Tala the cherry of the Kingdom is now a hot spot of some great cat movements. The ever gracious Spotty along with her sub adult female cubs are spreading their charm far and wide. The occasional visits of Rajbhera male (now almost full grown Tigers) has kept dynamics of the park interesting. With the first litter of Solo also in the scene it would be interesting to see how many of these small cubs survive the monsoon and the advancing threats of the Rajbhera males who are in the dawn of their youth. Banbehi along with her sub adults carve out exciting news for the rocky terrains of the area. With the shy Chakradhara female and now less sighted Rajbhera female there is a huge possibility of Tala regaining its erstwhile vitality in terms of its lost Tigers. All these under the purview of Mangu the dominant male of the area. Once more with the advancement of the Rajbhera males only time will count the fortune of how this equilibrium shapes us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Bamboo cover of Magadhi
Magadhi has been in the epicenter of all attention over the last two years. It reached the climax with the birth of 3 cubs of Junior Kankatti. Fathered by the very able Bamera’s Son this family rocked this summer with almost daily sightings. It would be apt to mention here that these next generation cubs are some of the boldest and tourist friendly tigers that Bandhavgarh can get. With the occasional sightings of Mahaman male and Dotty (sister of Spotty and mothered by Sukhi Pathia) along with Sukhi Pathia and her cubs Magadhi has evolved to be apply of every visitor’s feline dreams.
Khitouli- This is a zone of surprises. From that unsuspecting Sloth Bear to the crouching Jungle Cat you can bump onto anything. This is the home of the mighty Bheem and new Tiger that has entered the zone migrating from Panna. The Darraha Female along with her cubs and Mahaman female which shuttles between Magadhi and Tala provides the possibility of sudden encounters
