You’re Different, Like Me. part 13
Tumblr media
this night was like many of the others.
get up, get dressed, get dragged to the main hall, sit in silence, get told what to do, get fed, get shouted at, repeat.
this had been going on for so long, (y/n) couldn’t remember how long she’d been with them.
a month? two months? she truly could not remember.
right now, she was sitting in her usual spot at dinner, between ivars legs, getting fed like a child.
no matter how much it infuriated her, she kept her mouth shut. recently ivar’s temper had been erratic, flying in all different directions.
 thankfully, he hadn’t laid his hands on her since that evening in the dining room all those weeks ago.
he’d been more gentle with her, but not by much.
he tapped the side of her mouth, notifying her to open.
she complied, taking in a mouth full of the perfectly cooked vegetables.
she was swinging her legs around, until they hit something solid, she knew what it was immediately when she heard ivar stiffle a groan.
his legs.
“will you stop that?” ivar growled, adjusting himself so that his legs were facing away from her.
(y/n) sighed out quietly, something gnawing on the back of her brain.
she’s always wondered what happened with his legs. she could hear that he crawled as a way of getting around.
(y/n) wondered why.
had he been hurt in battle? had he been hurt as a child?.....had he been born with it?.
if so, that would change the way she thought of him.
her mind was swirling so violently, she hadn’t heard when ivar called her name.
“what is going in in that head of yours?” ivar asked, feeding her another fork full.
once she chewed her food properly, she couldn’t stop her mouth from opening on it’s own.
“what happened to your legs?”.
silence, complete and utter silence enveloped the room. it felt as if the air from the room had been sucked out, leaving a heavy, drowning feeling.
ivar scooped up some more food and proceeded to feed her.
but she stopped him. she placed a hand on his wrist and held it away from her face.
“what happened to your legs?” she tried again, but still, ivar ignored her. he pressed harder, trying to shut her up with food.
“will you just-”.
“i do not have to answer to you! YOU have to answer to ME!” ivar shouted, throwing her plate full of food away, slamming his palms on the table beside her hips.
(y/n) took in a deep breath, not saying a word, barely moving.
ivar leaned back in his chair, staring at the girl in front of him with dark, angered eyes.
she kept her head turned away from him, her hands resting on her lap, her legs crossed.
ivar looked down and noticed his hands shaking with anger.
he was honestly wondering why he was so angry, he wasn’t necessarily angry with her, but angry at the question and why it had to be brung up.
ivar bit at his lip until he tasted blood.
“alright, what happened to you? hm? what is wrong with your eyes?”.
ivar hadn’t meant it to come out so harshly, but he was just so, so angry.
she turned her head in his direction, looking extremely hurt by his words.
(y/n) could feel her throat tighten, and her heart start to beat wildly.
she sighed, if she was to die by ivars hand, why not just tell him the truth? what would it hurt?.
“i was born sightless”.
ivar felt his angered face relax a bit hearing her soft, yet broken voice.
he leaned forward a bit, wanting her to continue.
“as a newborn, i was abandoned upon the steps of the church, catherine and agnus took me in when no one else wanted me”.
she hung her head, letting her hair fall in front of her face.
“the women of the church are.....were convinced that i was evil, an omen. they only decided to let me stay when catherine convinced them that she could save my soul”.
ivar watched as she blinked furiously, her nose and cheeks turning red.
“of course, she did not believe i needed saving in the first place, she knew i was not evil, or had evil intent. i was just a child”.
ivar was completely silent, hearing her soft, warming voice echo into his ears.
“they ordered catherine to give me ‘holy baths’ each and every day”.
ivar crinkled his brows, his voice stopping her from speaking.
“holy baths?”.
she shook her head.
“they were awful. catherine would read prayers while she held me underwater  until she was completely finished, she’d scrub me raw, until i my skin was stinging and sometimes bleeding. when i’d act up, it was worse, i’d get at least twice a day”.
ivar once again silently thanked the gods that he never had to deal with anything as ridiculous as that.
“the nuns acted as if i were going to kill them at any moment, the children treated me like dirt, teasing me day and night”.
ivar looked down to his legs, remembering what the children in kattegat used to call him.
“why did you stay?” ivar asked. (y/n) sighed, running her hands through her hair, the chain around her ankles rattling with every movement.
“i.....i loved catherine and agnus too much to leave. i stayed for them, and i wanted to prove the church wrong. i wanted to show them that i was of no evil intent”.
ivar thought of his mother, aslaug in that moment. she was the reason why he stayed. she was the only woman, or person who truly loved him.
“the day we attacked, why weren’t you in the church?”.
“the nuns declined my joining of the church, even after all of my hard work. they wanted nothing to do with me. i needed to be alone. i wish i’d have stayed”.
ivar was glad she didn’t. she would have more than likely been slaughtered before he showed up.
he almost missed his chance to save catherine and agnus, he would have most definitely not been able to save her if she was there.
ivar cleared his throat, flashes of his mother in his head.
he had heard enough.
“guards!”.
(y/n)’s face suddenly broke out into confusion and anger.
“what are you doing?”.
“you are done eating-”.
“i answered all of your questions, you will not answer mine?!” she asked, as the guards came in an started to unchain her.
ivar didn’t answer her, he ignored her completely.
the guards grabbed her and led her away, ivar could still hear her trying to speak to him after the door was shut.
ivar squeezed his eyes shut, buckling over like he’d been punched in the stomach.
her words had brought up too much of his own childhood.
it startled him how much he liked talking to her, how much he liked hearing her voice.....how much they were alike.
ivar roared, slamming his fists into the table in front of him, he roared until his voice was soar.
he stopped hitting the table as a large chunk broke off, falling to the floor with a loud clatter.
he slipped off from his chair and crawled to the door, seething with pain, and anger.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(y/n) was almost asleep in her itchy little nest at the stables when her door was open.
it was a very large heathen man, his eyes holding annoyance and impatience.
“come on, girl” his voice deep and gravelly.
(y/n) rubbed the drowsiness from her eyes and stood, allowing the man to detach the chain from the wall and carry it.
(y/n) wanted to ask where he was taking her, but decided against it.
he tugged on her chain, hard, almost making her fall.
he wasn’t guiding her the ivar did, ivar led her roughly, but safe enough that she could feel where she was going.
(y/n) shivered as her bare feet hit the cold, muddy grounds of york.
she yelped softly as her toes stubbed against a brick platform.
the man sighed.
“i haven’t got all night”.
(y/n) huffed and stepped hesitantly over the step.
she rubbed her bare arms as this man led her into.....what sounded and felt like like a tunnel.
she could feel the warmth of the torches as she passed them by, she wanted nothing more than to stop and warm herself.
suddenly, she felt the man infront of her stop walking.
she heard the sound of jingling keys, wondering where she was and why.
she heard a door open, and fel her chain being tugged on.
she could feel a heavy warmth suddenly swarm her skin.
“let me know when you are finished” the man said gruffly, securing the end of her chain to the wall.
she stopped him before he left.
“where.....what is this place?” she asked, making the man roll his eyes.
“the bathing chambers”.
and with that, she was left alone.
the.....bathing chambers?.
(y/n) held out her hands, feeling for something sturdy to hold on to.
she finally gripped something hard, warm, yet cold.
it was a tub.....of warm, perfect temperature water.
not burning hot like she was used to.
she couldn’t help but smile widely.
but she was still so uncertain. this would be the first time she was bathing alone, without having to hold her breath, without being scrubbed or burned by the water.
she placed both hands in the water and let out a child like giggle.
she tugged on her chain to see if it would be able to reach, thank full it was the perfect length.
she shrugged her clothes off hurriedly and slipped into the tub, laughing the whole time.
what she didn’t know was that ivar sat against the door, listening to her laugh.
it was the first time he’d ever herd her laugh.
“make sure she is warm once she leaves here, is the cot set up in the stable?”.
“yes, ivar”.
ivar hummed, pressing his ear to the door, smiling as he heard her continually laugh and splash about in the tub.
this night was much different than either of them had thought it would be.
