వద్దా మంచిపేరు సంపాయించుకొన్నాడు. ఇలాంటి గొప్ప విద్వాంసులకి పాపం, ఎప్పుడూ దరిద్రం తాండవిస్తూ వుంటుంది ! కొద్దో గొప్పో సంపాయించిన డబ్బు రోజు బత్యానికే సరిపొయ్యేది. ఇంక మిగిలే డేముంది ? పైగా అతనికి నల్లటి భార్య దొరికింది.

     పూర్వం పాటలీపుత్రాన్ని విక్రమసింహు డనే రాజు పాలించేవాడు. అతడు ప్రజ లను దయతో చూడటంవల్ల ప్రజలకు అతనంటే ఎంతో గౌరవం ఉండేది. అతనికి ముగ్గురు కొడుకులున్నారు. ఒక కూతురు కూడా ఉంది. పెద్ద కొమారుని పేరు శూర సేనుడు. రెండవవాని పేరు కారవేలుడు. మూడవవాని పేరు విజయ పాలుడు. కూతురు పేరు మందారవతి.

        రాజు ప్రతిరోజు రథముమీద షి కారుకు వెళ్లేవాడు. తోటలో నుండి వచ్చేటప్పుడు ఒక మామిడిచెట్టుకు ఒకబంగారపు కాయ చూసేవాడు. మరుసటిరోజున ఉదయం ఎవరైనా బ్రాహ్మణుడికి అందించి అనుకొని ఇంటికి వెళ్లి పొయ్యేవాడు. రెండవరోజున వచ్చిచూస్తే కాయ కనపడేది కాదు. ఇలా కొద్దికాలం జరిగింది, రాజు ఒకరోజున శూర సేనుని పిలిచి మామిడికాయ ఎవరు తీసికొని పోతున్నదీ కనిపెట్టమని చెప్పాడు. సరే అని పెద్దకొడుకు సాయంత్రం భోజనంచేసి

        పూర్వం ఒకగ్రామంలో ఒక గురువు ఇద్దరు శిష్యులు వుండేవారు. ఒకసారి గురువుగారు తన శిష్యులతో సహా అప్రక్క గ్రామానికి బయలుదేరారు.

           కొంతదూరం వచ్చేసరికి గురువుగారికి దాహంవేసింది. ఆ చుట్టుప్రక్కల చూస్తే ఎక్కడా నీటిచుక్క కనిపించలేదు. కానీ, ఆ దగ్గరలోనే ఒక చిన్నవూరు కనిపిం చింది. గురువుగారు తన శిష్యులలో ఒకరిద్దరు పిలిచి, "శిష్య చాలాదాహంగా వుంది. కాస్త దాహం తీర్చుకుని బయలుదేరలేను. నువ్వు ఆ కనపడే వూళ్ళోకిపోయి ఎవరినైనా కాసిని చల్ల చుక్క పట్టుకుంటాం. నువ్వువచ్చేదాకా మేము ఈ చెట్టు క్రింద విశ్రాంతి తీసుకుంటాం" అన్నారు. చెప్పి కాసిని చల్ల యివ్వమని అడిగాడు 'సరే అలాగే యిస్తాను.' అని లోపలికి పోయాడు.

|| గుండ్రకొమ్ముల అనుమానం ||     పూర్వం ఒకపూల్లో ఒకదాసరి వుండేవాడు. ఆదాసరి తలబోడి, దాసరి రోజూ ప్రొద్దున్నే ముష్టికి బయలుదేరి వూళ్ళో వీధులన్నీ తిరిగి వచ్చినదానితో బ్రతుకుతూండేవాడు, దాసరి యిలా ముష్టికి వీధుల వెంబడి వెడుతుండగా ఒక వీథిలో గుండ్రంగా వంపుతిరిగిన కొమ్ము లు న్న గేదె ఒకటి కనిపించేది. ఆ గేదెకొమ్ములని చూడగానే దాసరికి ఒక సందేహం కలుగుతూవుండేది. పెద్ద దిక్కు ||  

           మా వూళ్ళో పుల్లయ్యగారి పెరటి దొడ్డిలోఒక పెద్ద నుయ్యి వుంది. ఆ నూతిని పుల్లయ్య, తన ప్రక్కయింటి బాపనయ్యకు రెండువందల రూపాయలకు అమ్మడు.

       బాపనయ్య నుయ్యి కొనుక్కున్నా డన్న మాటేగాని, చాలరోజులవరకు ఆ నూతిలో నీళ్లు తోడుకోవలసిన అవసరం బాపనయ్యకు కలగలేదు.కొన్నాళ్లు గడిచాయి. బాపనయ్య యింట్లో ఏదో శుభకార్యం వచ్చింది. చుట్ట పకాలు చాలమంది వచ్చారు. వాళ్ళందరి స్నానా లకీ తను పుల్లయ్యదొడ్డిలో కొన్న నుయ్యి చూపించాడు. వాళ్లు స్నానాలు చేద్దామని పోతే వుల్లయ్య బాపనయ్యకు అడ్డం మొచ్చి, " నూతిలో నీరు తోడుకోడానికి వీల్లేదు అన్నాడు. బాపనయ్య తెల్లబోయాడు. " అదేమి టయ్యా,నూతిని నేను కొనుక్కొన్నానుగదా! నా నూతిలో నీరు తోడుకోవడానికి నీ యిష్ట మేమిటి? " అన్నాడు.

                       ఒకానొక వూల్లో ఒక షాహుకారు వుండేవాడు. అతని పేరు ధర్మ బుద్ధి. పేరుకు తగ్గట్టుగానే అతను ధర్మగుణాలు కలిగి, దైవభక్తితో నడుచుకునేవాడు. అబద్ధమాడిగానీ, ఒకరిని ఒకమాట అనిగానీ, ఒకరికి ఒక హాని తలపెట్టిగానీ ఎరగడు. అతని మంచిగుణాలకు ఆవూళ్ళోవాళ్ళంతా అతన్ని మెచ్చుకునేవారు. ఇలాంటి మన ధర్మబుద్ధికి లేకలేక ఒక పుత్రుడు కలిగాడు. అతనికి నారాయణుడి పేరు పెట్టాడు. తండ్రి ఎంత మంచి వాడో నారాయణ డంత చెడ్డవాడుగా తయారయ్యాడు. ఒక ఏడు కొకవీడు పై బడ్డకొద్దీ నారాయణ చెడ్డ అలవాట్లు అల వరచుకో సాగాడు. దుర్మార్గుల స్నేహం చేయసాగాడు. లేకలేక పుట్టటంచేత ధర్మ బుద్ధి కొడుకుని ఏమీ అనేవాడు కాదు.
