China landed a spacecraft on the far side of the moon at 6:26am GMT today (3 Dec). Chang'e 4 arrived in Lunar orbit on 12 December after being launched on 7 December. The spacecraft landed in Von Karman crater which is 180km (112 miles) across lying within the South Pole-Aitken impact basin. This enormous basin, 2,500km (1,553 miles) across, is the oldest impact feature on the moon as well as the deepest at 13km (8 miles) from crater rim to floor (six times as deep as the Grand Canyon). This is the first time anything has been able to land on the far side of the moon because direct communications from Earth are not possible. The Chinese achieved this by first launching a communications relay satellite, Queqiao (magpie bridge), last May which orbits behind the moon around one of the points were the moon and the Earths gravity balance out, a langrange point, were a spacecraft can just orbit around. From Earth Queqiao appears to be circling around the edge of the moon in whats called a 'Halo' orbit. The first picture from the surface appears to show Chang'e 4 just missed landing in a small crater as big as itself which could of toppled the lander. The craft is 4.76m (15.6ft) across with a landing weight of 1,200kg and stands 0.8m (2.7ft) tall, like it's predecessor Chang'e 3, which landed on the near side of the moon in December 2013 it also carries a small rover (as yet unnamed, but at a wild guess will be called Yutu-2) which will be deployed later, presumably soon (the Chinese don't reveal much information in advance).
