About Varian’s change

note: this contain spoilers to all episodes of “tangled the series”.

I feel like this twist was forced. I mean, it was obvious it was planned from the beginning of the series but the way it was done was really, really forced. It's like the writers bended the characters personallities and the megical universe of the show for the sole purpose of corrupting this sweet and kind and loyal 12 years old boy to the point of attempting murder, something that could have been avoided SO EASLEY.

Let's take a look at what happened in "queen for a day Rapunzel was pressured into making a decision that will determine the fate of the entire kingdom. She was completely focused on this she did not even go to rescue her own parents.

I 100% think that not going with Varian, as painful as it was, was the right decision because:

1. Rapunzel did not really have a way to help him. The only thing they knew was that she has a megical hair that is connected to the rocks somehow. Rapunzel knows nothing about alchemy or the crystal that covered his dad, she has no idea how to control the rocks, nothing.

2. Varian's dad specifically said himself to Varian to NOT get help.

3. By the time Varian got back, the crystal completely covered his dad, so it did not matter if Rapunzel would have come with him now or 3 days later

4. It was crazy to go out if this storm that was supposed to only get worse..

5. And the main argument, Rapunzel had to help her entire kingdom, not just the one person. She didn't even go to save her parents, she let her boyfriend to risk his life, Pascal sacrificed himself too. She couldn't just drop everything to go with him. Not to mention how she didn't even break her promise then. Her promise as to help him figure out the rocks mystery, she never said when or that she will go help him free his dad.

So what I did have a problem with? Well I had a problem with how the guards just trew him out of the castle, a 12 years old in the middle of a snow storm because "he tried to attack the princess" while everycoke who would watch the scene would see nothing that was even similar to "attacking" her. Also, I completely understand why despite all the good reasons Rapunzel had to not go with him, he reacted the way he did: a boy who only tried to help and make the people he cares about (especially his dad) proud and always felt like he failed them, lost his village and the only family he ever had for something that happened because of him. He risked his life to find his friend and his only hope and she turned her back on him.

But

I still think that Varian turning bad could have been avoided.

Why?

Because of what happened AFTER the storm. As I said earlier, even if Rapunzel would have come with Varian the time he asked her by the time try got back he would have already been covered with the crystal. Rapunzel's problem wasn't that she didn't come on time, no. It was that she didn't come AT ALL.

Why didn't Rapunzel come to Varian AFTER the storm was over? The last time she saw him he was thrown out of the castle in the middle of a snow storm and his dad was in terrible danger. As a friend, the only logical thing to do is to come check if he's OK! If there was anything she could do to help!

What she SHOULD HAVE done was to come visit him after the storm, facing his anger and blame that may have been big but still no where NEAR the condition he reached to in the season final. She could have still calmed him down then, she could have tried to help and comfort him for what happened.

What did she do instead? She took some painting lessons and painted for an art gallery.

The only time anyone mentioned him was when Rapunzel said she had to turn her back on him. As if there was nothing she could do now. It is so out of character for her to just forget about a friend this way and that's why it felt forced. Instead of going to him right then, the main cast forgot his existence and let him be driven into madness by guilt, helplessness, grief and despair. Who knows for how long he sat next to his father's crystal, trying everything he could think of with no results? With not even one person if the world to be there for him.

Then, even when Varian built his plan to use Rapunzel to steal the flower and give everyone truth cookies, she was once again out of character. She only agreed to help him when he said it was the only hope to save Corona and showed no compassion for him and his dad's condition even though she saw it with her own eyes.

And then, after Varian run away with the flower, there was a shift in Rapunzel's, and everyone else's way of talking about him. He wasn't any longer a friend of the princess. He wasn't a young boy who was desperate to save his father. From this point everyone treated him solely as an enemy. They didn't think it was possible to reason with him.

In fact, the only time ANYONE tried to ask what he wanted and how they could help was the captured queen, and then it was too little too late. Varian said to Rapunzel and her dad that they only listened to him when he took what they cared about and threatened to hurt it. And you know what? HE WAS RIGHT. ALMOST EVERYTHING HE SAID IN THIS EPISODE WAS TRUE. Most of the time I was on HIS side! (not that I approved his methods)

So what do we have now? A villan. Someone who is super smart and talented and only wanted to help the people he cared about lost but everything he ever had and is now a bitter villan who craves for revenge. And it was so frustrating and painful to watch because it could have been avoided SO EASLEY.

Varian deserved better.
