charlotte bronte certainly didn't want the reader to think that jane was "ugly", but i like to imagine her as plain the same way mia wasikowska is "plain", ie someone with a perpetually very withdrawn inscrutable expression
#she excels as india stoker for the same reason#this air of mystery that you want to figure out but you never quite manage#but it's ver unobstrusive#charlie is as surprised of india as rochester is of ja e#and it *works*
