the sheer idea of a fanwork being so impactful on the series as a whole that the official release alludes to those choices of localization seems like the complete opposite of the dynamic you'd expect, but the reality is that this is just an inherent quality of ace attorney as a series.

the next best example is probably way back when one such change in the trial and tribulation fantranslation was referenced, despite it being unfinished and scrapped the moment Capcom USA so much as acknowledged the possibility of bringing the game to the west

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Announced

At the Nintendo Direct today, news I have been tirelessly waiting six years for arrived: The Ace Attorney Investigations games are coming to all modern consoles! This includes Ace Attorney Investigations 2 (now officially known as Ace Attorney Investigations: Prosecutor's Gambit), after THIRTEEN YEARS of being a Japan-exclusive game!

Now everyone gets to experience Debeste Ace Attorney games! ... The Winner Ace Attorney Games!

Key Information

The collection is coming out on September 6, 2024 to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, XBOX One, Windows, and Steam. It will be available in Japanese, English, French, German, Korean, and Traditional and Simplified Chinese, with new voice dubs. Most of the information in this post will be coming from the official website, which you can check out for more details.

There's lots of information here, so let's break it down:

New Features

Since these were originally Nintendo DS games, there's a massive jump in graphic quality to HD! This includes a new interface for Logic, the court record, and redone full-body sprites. But if you prefer the classic look, the AAI collection will let you swap between the sprite styles:

Similarly to the Great Ace Attorney Chronicles and 456 Collection, the AAI Collection includes story mode, dialogue history, a gallery containing concept and special art, and music including orchestral arrangements of the soundtrack.

You can also change the in-game soundtrack to rearranged tracks! This applies to Confrontation - Allegro, Confrontation - Presto, Objection 2009, and Pursuit - Chase Down The Truth (commonly known as Lying Coldly) with and without the intro.

Pre-Order Bonuses

Much like the AAI tracks, AAI2 arranged tracks can play in game, but these are currently restricted to pre-order bonuses (though this might change in the future). This includes Confrontation - Allegro 2011, Confrontation - Presto 2011, Objection 2011, and the intro and non-intro versions of Pursuit - Uncover The Truth (commonly known as Wanting To Find The Truth).

That's all on the English side, but much like the 456 collection, Japan has a physical collector's edition called the Mitsurugi (Edgeworth) Checkmate Set. This includes an arranged mini-album of songs by other composers, and new album art by Tatsuro Iwamoto.

The new songs include "Objections of Different Eras" (seemingly a remix of Objections 2009 and 2011), "Raven that Pursues The Truth" (remix of Kay's theme), "It's Time for Action!" (remix of Gumshoe's theme), "Howling Echoes" (remix of Lang's theme), and "Unveiling the Truth" (remix of the Pursuit songs).

This collection also includes a diorama set:

The set has two backgrounds (the rooftop of the Grand Tower and Edgeworth's office), and has standees of Edgeworth, Kay, Gumshoe, Franziska, Lang, Gregory, and... Verity and Eustace.

Localization Differences

Since most AA fans will be familiar with the fantastic AAI2 fan translation, the new names will likely be an adjustment for all of us. Characters in AAI (like Kay and Lang) will not have their names changed, just characters that were previously exclusive to AAI2.

Known name changes include:

Yumihiko Ichiyanagi / Sebastian Debeste -> Eustace Winner

Hakari Mikagami / Justine Courtney -> Verity Gavèlle

Tateyuki Shigaraki / Raymond Shields -> Eddie Fender

We also know that Manosuke Naito / Horace Knightley's new last name is Knight, and Gai Tojiro / Ethan Rooke's last name is Rook, which isn't much of a departure from fan translation names. We also know that Mikiko Hayami / Nicole Swift's new last name is Lloyd. I will provide updates on more names when they become available!

Regardless of your feelings on the new names - it's going to be an adjustment for everyone used to the fan translation that has been around ten years now - let's all keep in mind that despite the new names, the characters behind the names will be the same. And personally, as a massive fan of AAI2, I think the adjustment will be worth it if it means that more people get to experience my favorite ace attorney game for themselves.

With this announcement, all canonical ace attorney games have been ported to modern consoles and given an English translation. As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, this announcement is thirteen years in the making for AAI2! This is an unprecedented time for the popularity and accessibility of Ace Attorney.

Since the state of aa fanon has made you "a cannon worshipper" (and me too) I have a question:

Is there any in-game evidence that Miles cares about Franziska at all? We know from playing from his pov in 3-5 and in aai that he admires and respects her as a prosecutor and that he's grateful when she helps him, but does anything he does point towards him canonically seeing her as anything more than a colleague? In AAI1-4 they seem close, but that was 7 years ago. I can't remember any moment of the game's present timeline where it's implied he cares much for her beside the end of jfa. Even after that it looks like they both do their own thing and don't stay in contact unless they're working together. Am I missing something?

I mean you answered your own question. He thinks highly of her, is always the first to admire her skill, and very crucially drops everything he's doing at the end of JFA to chase after and reinvigorate her when she's lost and broken. When he needs a prosecutor in 3-5 to play along with his little scheme, she is his first choice and he trusts her to follow through and show up the way she always does. He canonically drags her to the hospital when she's bleeding out, and then later when Wright goes to visit her there Miles is all but glued to her bedside.

I don't know how much clearer the game can spell out that Miles loves Franziska. Miles, like the von Karmas, loves entirely through his actions. I would argue that Phoenix is the only person he loves more loudly than Franziska.

He does not mention her in the current timeline because she is not in the games. Miles Edgeworth does not need to turn to the camera and inform the player that Franziska still exists and that he loves her because that is kind of just the assumption.

I know I haven't played through every game yet (and indeed I have not played AAI, the game that it is from, but NO MATTER!) I am calling it here: Chase Down the Truth(or Lying Coldly if you prefer) is the best Pursuit Theme out of all of them, no I don't need to hear the rest before making my decision, thanks <3 I want this song injected directly into my bloodstream 💉

Thoughts on you’re my skyy series or do you have any favourite couple until now? All couples are interesting to me up until now which is rare in bl series. Most of the time it seems that most series try to put as many couples as possible and at the end none of them are well done 🤷‍♀️

I'm really enjoying it! the cinematography is super pretty, I love a queer show that focuses on basketball bc I used to play it as well, and I especially like the slice of life elements! nowadays series where you're just following the characters for 12 episodes straight are kinda rare, but in this show I'm just here for the ride & so far it's really fun! also you really said it all, despite my fave ship ever being a side couple (untwo from tol), most of the time secondary ships really don't do it for me & feel hella forced and like they're stealing screentime from the main ship. and let's not even talk about shows that have fifty ships, they completely lose me 99% of the time ngl. but in this show (and not me as well but I talk about this show too much lol), every ship is interesting bc each of them has very different vibes. tupfah & thorn are my personal faves bc the friends to lovers trope just hits me different lol, and I love how natural their relationship is. they're not very close to each other physically or through the way they talk, but we just KNOW they care about each other so much. they have that sort of slow burn, soft energy that probably makes them the most boring to most people but I just... love them. also again, basketball gays!!! then we have aai & saen who are kind of the classic bl ship of cat & mouse, with one chasing the other who's more of a tsundere until they get together. they're probably my least favorite ship bc we've seen that storyline a thousand times, but at least they provide some lighter comedic moments to an otherwise pretty serious show. also saen is definitely my favorite character (with dome) & I find this ship's actors incredibly cute so I still definitely like them! and then we have vee & dome who probably have the most compelling story imo, even though it's definitely messed up. the actors' chemistry is no joke either, they're amazing together. that being said I am afraid that their story is gonna become too much of an angst fest quickly so yeah, I do still have my reservations. but overall, pretty solid show! probably won't become my all-time fave, but I'm really quite enjoying it :)

i really want to play aai but i can’t stop running around edgeworth’s desk and watching gumshoe chase him. so uhhh do you or any of your anons have any spoiler free reasons for me to continue playing?😂

haha i feel that! aai is hard to get into because the gameplay is so different. if you’re struggling to figure out what to do i’d recommend using a guide, specifically this one. it’s what i used for aai, aai2, and part of SOJ. very detailed and helpful!

i’d highly recommend continuing playing though. it has an amazing story and characters that make the game worth it. once you get used to the gimmick of the game and the controls, it gets easier!i’d really suggest continuing as the investigations games are some of my favorite. it has more of a unique plot line and playing as edgeworth is so much fun!

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection soundtrack is now live, and is set to feature 23 new select orchestral arrangements and at least 1 completely new track. This includes remixes for the Objection, Pursuit, and Presto and Allegro themes.

Since the Apollo Justice Trilogy only had included few new tracks for its main menu and credits sequence rather than the actual game, one could argue that this is the first proper batch of Ace Attorney music we've gotten in 7 years.

In a recent blog post, the aa:i collection developers discussed the process of remolding a bunch of the assets throughout the games and rethinking their presentation with the language setting's culture in mind.

my personal favourite of these differences is the implication that, in the original japanese version, edgeworth uses a vertical-styled business card that's meant to contrast lang's, whose country of origin is loosely based off of china.

while the mannerisms of this five second exchange are still heavily rooted in eastern business practices, the developers still went out of their way to redesign edgeworth's card to fit his persona in the english version. crazy stuff.

The AAI Cast Takes On Twitter

Hello! For the release of ace attorney investigations 2 ten years ago, on the official AA twitter account, Capcom posted a bunch of tweets that were made to sound like they came from the characters themselves. You can still find them if you dig far enough, but it’s a bit of a pain to find and especially a pain to understand in English, so I decided to compile them all here and attempt to translate them. (They have also been “localized” in true ace attorney fashion.)

First, a disclaimer: I am absolutely NOT a translator and my understanding of Japanese is abysmal. I put the original tweets through google translate and then went through trying to make them legible, including looking up words and phrases when they didn’t make any sense. As a result, I can’t guarantee that this is completely accurate, and I definitely messed with phrasing a bit to get things to flow better or sound more in character. Hopefully the general gist of things should make sense! I’ll put the original Japanese text below the English one, and if you actually know Japanese and would like to properly translate it, please do so! I just wanted to get this out here as fast as possible.

If you want to view the original tweets, I’ve filtered them (mostly!) here in reverse-chronological order. There are tweets from the game staff at the end that I did not “translate”.

With that said, here are the tweets. (It is long, so most of it is under the cut.) The breaks are things I added that I believe were breaks in time on the actual account, and represent new scenes.

The localized foods are as follows: 

dorayaki -> Samurai Dogs (since Missile also has a habit of eating those, though I don’t believe the original was dorayaki?)

somen -> instant ramen

katsudon -> pork roast

shirataki -> plain pasta

The “bean-throwing festival” is Setsubun, a festival where you toss soybeans and eat some in order to toss out bad luck and bring in good luck (to my understanding, please correct me if I’m wrong). What Kay said (minus the Great Thief part) is one translation of  a phrase you shout while throwing the beans. I obviously gave up on trying to localize this.

〈ミクモ〉：まあまあ。逆転検事２も発売間近ですし、ミツルギさんも言いたいこといっぱいあるでしょ？

〈ミツルギ〉：ム。確かにこういった機会は少ないから貴重ではあるな。

〈ミツルギ〉：情報同士の共通点を探す。それこそが《ロジック》を追うということだ。逆転検事２でも《ロジック》を組み立てることが捜査の重要なカギを握っている。現場に残された“えんぴつ”と“イトノコギリ刑事がなくした物”‥‥２つの情報から導き出せる答えは１つ。

〈ミツルギ〉：発売まであと３日。フォロワーの方々も楽しみに待っていてくれたまえ。

〈ミツルギ〉：冬場の捜査は、寒くてかなわないな‥‥。発売前に風邪を引くわけにはいかん。しっかり防寒対策をしなければな。

〈ミツルギ〉：そういえば、イトノコギリ刑事は年中同じコートを着ているが、寒くないのだろうか‥‥。ああ‥‥単に、給与が下がりすぎて買えないだけかもしれないな。

〈ミツルギ〉：検事局の近くに手打ちのうどん屋がある。リーズナブルな値段の割に、味も満足のいくものだ。‥‥‥‥いかん。イトノコギリ刑事を誘うとなると、ついつい麺類にばかり考えがいってしまうな。

〈ミツルギ〉:ム。さきほど発売まであと３日とつぶやいたのだが、発売日はあさって‥‥あと２日だったか。昨夜は、執務室で徹夜仕事だったのでな。日付の感覚が狂ってしまったようだ。

〈ミツルギ〉:私としたことが、つぶやきが“ムジュン”していたとは‥‥失礼した。指摘してくれたフォロワーの方、感謝する。

〈イトノコ〉：カツ丼美味いッスぅううう！今年初めてのトンカツッスよ！

〈ミツルギ〉：イトノコギリ刑事。つぶやきながら食べるのはやめたまえ！

〈イトノコ〉：自分、今年は水炊き鍋で“しらたき”ばかり食べてたッスからねー。

思わず叫んじまったッス！

〈ミクモ〉：叫んだんじゃなく、つぶやきですけどね！

〈ミツルギ〉：ソーメンではなかったが、彼の食生活はいつも危機的状況だな。

〈イトノコ〉：うう‥‥捜査で失敗するたびに、生活費がピンチになるッスからね‥‥。

〈ミクモ〉：でも、いま一番危機が迫っているのは、ミツルギさんのほうなんじゃ？

〈イトノコ〉：自分も聞いたッスよ‥‥。いったい、どんな失敗をしちゃったッスか！ 

〈ミツルギ〉：キミと一緒にしないでくれたまえ！

身に覚えはないが‥‥ピンチを恐れていても仕方がないだろう。

私は、自分の信じる道を行くだけだ。

〈ミクモ〉：さっすがミツルギさん！いざとなったらわたしも力を貸しますからね。大ドロボウとして！

〈イトノコ〉：もちろん自分もッス！ピンチな時の生活費のやりくりならお任せッス！ 

〈ミツルギ〉：‥‥せめて、刑事として力を貸してもらえないだろうか。

〈ミクモ〉：そういえば。ミツルギさんのお父さんって、どんな人なんですか？

〈ミツルギ〉：‥‥なぜ、いきなりそんな質問を？

〈ミクモ〉：さっき信楽さんに聞いたんですよ。ミツルギさんのお父さんは、すごく立派な人だったって！わたしもお父さんを尊敬してたから、ちょっと気になっちゃって。

〈ミツルギ〉：幼い頃の私にとっては、尊敬すべき相手であり��‥目標でもあった。

〈ミクモ〉：あれ？いまは違うんですか？ 

〈ミツルギ〉：‥‥‥‥どうだろうな。一言で説明するのは難しい。この答えを知りたいのならば、明日まで待ってくれたまえ。

〈ミクモ〉：なるほど！逆転検事２に真実が隠されている‥‥と。ミツルギさんの真実、私が盗んじゃいますよ！

〈ミクモ〉：ノコちゃん！そっちの飾りは、もっと右よりでお願い！

〈イトノコ〉：こっちッスね！あ、飾りが落ちたッス！ 

〈ミツルギ〉：昼間から、人の執務室で何をしているのだ。

〈イトノコ〉：今日は非番ッスからね！明日の発売日に向けて、前夜祭の準備をしてるッスよ！ 

〈ミクモ〉：そろそろ、つぶやく時間もなくなって来ましたからね！

ミツルギさんは気にせず仕事をしててください！

〈ミツルギ〉：そう思うのなら、机の上にのぼるのはやめていただきたい。

‥‥もう少しで仕事が片付くから、それまで待っていたまえ。

〈ミクモ〉：え！ミツルギさんも手伝ってくれるんですか？

〈ミツルギ〉：私とて祝いたい気持ちはあるのだ。

〈イトノコ〉：助かるッス！

それじゃ時間までソファーに座って待ってるッスよ！

〈ミツルギ〉：‥‥‥‥‥‥廊下で遊んでいてくれないだろうか。

〈イトノコ〉：逆転検事２発売に向けて、乾杯ッス！ 

〈ミツルギ〉：フッ‥‥前夜祭というのも良いものだな。

〈ミクモ〉：えへへ。明日には、わたしたちのカツヤクをお見せできるんですね！ 

〈ミツルギ〉：うム。感慨深いモノがあるな。

〈ミクモ〉：わたしたちのつぶやきも、これで最後になるんですね‥‥ちょっと名残惜しいです。

〈ミツルギ〉：だが一週間のあいだ、このような機会をいただけて良かった。直接、感謝を伝えることが出来るのだからな。私たちのつぶやきを見ていた方々。‥‥あらためて礼を言わせていただこう。

〈イトノコ〉：まだまだ話したいことはあるッスけど、もう時間ッスからね！

〈ミクモ〉：でも、まだ前夜祭は始まったばかりですよ！なんと！このあと「逆転検事２」の開発スタッフに直接質問ができちゃうんです！ 

〈イトノコ〉：へえ！そんな企画があるッスか！

〈ミクモ〉：カプコンから盗んできた情報だから、確実ですよ！１８時ぐらいから始まるそうです！

〈ミツルギ〉：私としても聞きたいことはたくさんあるのだが‥‥そこはフォロワーの方々に任せるとしよう。それでは、私たちはこれで失礼する。
