North East — Assam & Meghalaya

Many travel companies were promoting North East packages and we found TripFriday which stood out from the others in terms of itinerary, hotel selection, and service. Our itinerary covered most top places in Assam & Meghalaya.

Day 1) We were picked up by the driver at the airport and then checked into our hotel in Ginger Guwahati hotel. Overall a good hotel to stay. Rooms are quite spacious and well maintained. Our plan for the day was:

Kamakhya Temple — We went to offer prayers, it’s on the hill with a good location. The temple is well maintained. It was crowded for a normal lane but we chose the VIP lane and our darshan was quick.

Umananda Temple — A short boat journey along the Brahmaputra River brought us to this beautiful island where the temple can be found.

Fancy Bazaar — The main market area of Guwahati, which now houses a variety of clothing stores. There are also ethnic clothes, inexpensive restaurants, and local brands ranging from cheap to expensive. We bought some local wear for a good price.

Brahmaputra Sunset River Cruise — This is a wonderful way to enjoy the sunset in Guwahati. The boat was nice & clean and with snacks (at an extra cost) and live music. This cruise is about 1hr 30 mins and starts around 4:30 Pm. It was a really nice way to spend the evening. My partner liked it a lot.

Day 2) We checked out from Guwahati and departed to Shillong Via Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake- Words couldn’t explain the beauty of this lake with bluish water and pleasant landscape. You can also go boating which is much recommended.

Then we checked into our hotel in Shillong. Cafe Shillong is a small hotel that is a bit away from the crowd. Good room service and decent and simple breakfast overall neat and clean property. Later, we visited:

Ward’s Lake- Beautiful location in the heart of the city, with easy access. The entire place has been meticulously kept and is extremely tidy, clean, and appealing to the eye. It’s a great picnic spot because of the well-kept park, visitor paths, and the lake in between.

Shillong View Point — Beautiful location for a panoramic view of Shillong. Sit & Relax and enjoy the place. The area is under control by the Air Force so they have to clear the security check.

Police Bazar — It is the main shopping street in Shillong. And it was crowded, we bought some souvenirs

Day 3) Day trip to Cherrapunjee

We visited 3 waterfalls & a cave — Elephant falls, Nohkalikai Falls & Nohsngithiang Falls. All the 3 falls were good, we personally liked Nohkalikai Fall. The road to Nohkalikai Falls takes you over an elevated valley that leads to a tiny hill, where you can trek a short distance to a viewpoint with breathtaking views of the Nohkalikai cascade crashing into a turquoise pool.

Mawsmai Caves — Amazing natural cave which tends to be narrower we had to bend and crawl to but it is an interesting visit. You will find stalactites around the cave and we spent around 15 minutes inside the cave.

Day 4 ) — Mawlynnong Village and Dawki Village tour

Mawlynnong Village — Highly recommend this village. Ranked as one of the cleanest villages in Asia. When we visited we saw the tidiness and the serenity of the place.

Dawki River — The river water is so clean and clear that you can see quite deep in the water and see the clear rocks. They also have facilities like cliff jumping and kayaking. We opted for Kayaking. It was mind-blowing seeing how clean this river is. Just 15 mins drive away you can find the Indo — Bangladesh border.

And then we headed back to the hotel and spent the rest of the time at the hotel.

Day 5 ) We checked out & headed to Kaziranga. We checked into Infinity Resorts Kaziranga. It was a very good choice of resort to stay in with greenery around and the nicest staff. The resort has 2 lakes on the premises and also has recreational activities. Very good rooms & comfy beds too. It also has an outdoor pool.

Safari- We opted for 2 safaris one was on this day in the evening and the next in the early morning. Since I am more into wildlife I did not want to miss this opportunity. We would definitely recommend you to do a jeep & elephant safari. There are fixed schedules so cross-check before you book. You will mostly site- Rhinos, Elephants, Water buffalo, and sambar

Day 6) Early morning safari was planned and we came to the hotel. Later we visited:

Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park are known for orchids, ethnic dances, Assamese silks, handcrafted items, and Assamese historical items. There is also an ethnic food restaurant there.

Day 7) We were picked up from the resort and then departed to Guwahati airport.

Nohkalikai Water Fall- Meghalaya

Nohkalikai Fall is located in the eastern part of the country in the region of Meghalaya, at the city of Cherrapunji .Cherrapunji is about 15 km from the most rainy place in the world – Mawsynrāmu Mawsynrām . Nohkalikai Falls are 335m high and they offer beautiful scenery. They are falling from a high rock overhang. Below the waterfall is a beautiful lake. The surrounding area is covered with dense forests. Nohkalikai Falls play a very important role for the locals. According to a legend, a mythical monster had been massacred there. Falls are the most sought after tourist destinations in the region.

Nohkalikai Water Fall- Meghalaya

A few kilometres to the west of Cherrapunjee, a clear bubbling stream emerges from its steep mountain bed to hurtle down a rocky precipice into a deep gorge, creating a captivating view of magnificent beauty. A local legend is connected with the Waterfall from which it has derived its name.

Nohkalikai Falls is said to be named after a story about a woman named Ka Likai who leapt off the cliff. It was certainly the waterfall highlight of our waterfalling excursion in the Meghalaya state in the country’s far northeast (just east of Bangladesh), especially considering the subdued nature of its neighboring waterfalls.

As for the height of the Nohkalikai Falls, we’ve seen some rather outrageous claims about this falls being the 4th highest in the world (even some Bank of India sponsored sign proclaims this at the sheltered overlook) as well as this falls being the second highest in the country according to our 2007 version of LP. So far the only number I’ve seen regarding its height is that it’s 335m tall, which if true makes this taller than both Jog Falls and Dudhsagar Falls assuming you believe the height numbers claimed for those waterfalls as well. However, it was hard to tell if that 335m number is being generous or not based on our observations .

In any case, it was pretty clear to us that this waterfall was the pride of Meghalaya tourism and there was a fairly busy car park as well as some basic infrastructure to experience the falls. In addition to the walkways and overlooks hugging the cliff edge peering down at the falls, there were also various fruit and food stands (if you’ve got a strong stomach) run by the local villagers.

Several major tourist attractions can be mentioned in the town’s surroundings, like Mawsynrām about 13 km, The Manas national park about 180 km, Mawsmai Cave about 4.1 km, Mawjymbuin Caves about 12 km, Zoo Dhaka about 211 km.

How To Get There

The town is located at a distance of 60 kilometers from the city of Shillong. One can reach the place easily using taxis and buses.

Helicopter Government helicopter services are available from the city of Guwahati to Shillong. You can opt for a taxi from here to Cherrapunjee.

By Air The closest airport is located at Shillong and this has scheduled flights from places such as Kolkata and Jorhat. Only one regional airline operates to the airport. Landing at the airport and taking a taxi is a good option for those who are arriving by air. Taxis can be booked through the hotels for pre arranged pickup. Some private taxis are available outside the airport as well. They charge around Rs 7 per kilometer as the base rate.

By Bus State buses are also available from the city of Shillong to Cherrapunjee. These are frequent and can be boarded from the main terminus. Tickets are cheap and affordable as well.
