Whilst director Mamoru Oshii is perhaps most famed for his 1995 adaptation of the manga, Ghost In The Shell, and perhaps lesser so for his two Patlabor films, it's his 1985 piece, Angel's Egg (Tenshi no Tamago – 天使のたまご) which is most personally beloved to me; an ethereal and, it must be said, quite esoteric work of art in collaboration with famed artist and illustrator, Yoshitaka Amano (Vampire Hunter 'D', Final Fantasy).

Now, it has a 4K restoration, soon coming to cinema screens in the US this November, and I deeply hope there will be subsequent screenings here in the UK sometime after — personally, I would envisage Spring 2026 to be an ideal time.

Whilst, as I said, it is a rather esoteric work, it's nonetheless beautiful to behold and deeply engrossing, as we follow a young girl, custodian of a mysterious egg, carry out her duties in a flooded, seemingly long-abandoned city inhabited only by ghosts and memories, until one day, she encounters a boy — a soldier from a distant war — who arrives in the city, driven by a dream he had of a bird.

It's a stunning piece, dripping with haunting style and emotional nuance, touching upon themes of duty, faith, redemption and responsibility, particularly those that come with adulthood and especially motherhood. In my eyes, it also stands as perhaps the finest representation of Amano's ethereal and flowing art style. It's a long-standing favourite of mine, and I would encourage anyone with even the slightest interest in animation to experience it this November in the US, and whenever it (hopefully) hits cinemas in the UK next year.
