I resisted the blind box bjd tidal wave for as long as I could, but the magic words “Mature Tiny BJD” were too much for me to resist and I had to grab one of the UFdoll tea party blind boxes - I got Fruit Tea:

I can’t believe the quality of this doll, especially for the price - I don’t know what I was expecting but definitely not such a heavy sturdy doll with immaculate stringing, high quality clothes/accessories, extra hand and feet options, a stand, two sets of eyes, additional bunny ears, and extra hooks/putty/magnets. And the faceup is super cute and well done. The only thing I wish was included in addition would be the plain head back so that I could try regular wigs, but I believe I can buy that separately so I’ll probably give that a try at some point - and at this doll’s price point I REALLY can’t complain.

The plastic on this doll is so smooth and velvety, and feels really solid. I’m now a bit obsessed (and I may have already ordered a couple of more blind boxes🥰).

My original thought was to get one of these dolls in part to check out the body size/quality to see if it is an option for doll rebodying (usually my Pullip dolls). The body is a bit short for Pullip I think as it looks about 22cm - but seems like it will work beautifully for Yeolume or Dal (we will see since I definitely ordered one already - I can’t wait to put together the custom Yeolume bjd hybrid of my dreams).

I also decided to let Fruit Tea try this cute Licca outfit I got for Christmas a couple of years ago - even though I don’t actually have a Licca doll (yet). It doesn’t fit perfectly but it works well enough in case you get one of these dolls and have some Licca clothes laying around:

Kaxen's BJD Hardcap Wigmaking 2024 Version

Pros of hard wig cap style:

The best method for short hairstyles (and I am a masochist who loves short swept-back hairstyles)

Are you the kind of person who gets tilted over lace front wigs having a line of extra net or not fitting your doll's forehead? This wig will fit and you can chop the wig cap even closer.

I hate hand sewing, so I never do sewn wefts with soft wigcaps, and sewn wefts don't work well for exposed hairlines so GLUE, GLUE, BABY.

Cons of hard wig cap style:

This wig will not fit on another doll unless it's maybe from the same company or has a really generic head-shape

Tools

Nonstick mat - Michaels sells Messy Mats which are very thin but stiff film mats that are nonstick. Silicone mats for pet bowls are often very cheap! A lot of craft-specific silicone mats have more price mark-up despite being the exact same thing.

Silicone spatula - for spreading glue. Just the generic silicone tools are fine. Comes in different sizes.

Glue of choice - Different glues react differently to different fibers and different colors. Pick whatever you like that has a slight flex to it and is waterproof once it's dry. If you prefer to style hair with high temperatures (especially the boiling water method), pick something that will resist high temps.

Glues I personally hate passionately: Beacon Adhesives Fabri-tac.

Why Fabri-tac sucks:

Smells terrible

Warps over time, wigs have literally stopped fitting the doll it was for

Rock hard when dry, literally the worst option for fabric???????????

Glue bottle cap always gets fucked up and useless.

Like jesus christ just get some fray check if you need fabric glue

Slicker brush: No matter how thorough you are with glue, you will have loose fiber. Comb it out. Buy two if you want to be able to have a poor man's wool carder so you can re-align fibers and use them later. WHY ARE WOOL CARDERS SO EXPENSIVE?

Fibers -

Suri alpaca: Very fine strands, low gloss, can use hair irons on it

Tencel: very fine strands, high gloss, can use hair irons on it, plant-based. Great for 1/6 scale and Anime Bullshit hair

Viscose (not pictured): very fine strands, high gloss, crinkles like hell if it gets wet, can use hair irons on it, plant-based

Silk (the silver wig lower down the post): very fine strands, high gloss, can use hair irons on it

Mohair: medium strands (thinner if it's kid mohair), high gloss, can use hair irons on it. Various levels of curly.

Synthetic: medium strands, high or low gloss depending on what you get, ymmv on hair irons check before hand how much temperature it can handle. Already made of plastic so plastic-y glue doesn't make it look weirder. Comes in the longest strands.

Wool roving (not pictured): fine strands, no gloss, doesn't really look like straight hair, but works well for styles like dreads.

Acrylic yarn (not pictured): fine strands, gloss level varies, cheap, but you pay in "spent all afternoon unraveling yarn to brush it out" MICROPLASTICS BAD.

I looked at combed mohair prices and it made me scared. How much fiber do I need?

1/3 heads (8-9in circumference): 1/2 oz is a comfortable amount for shorter styles and more the longer the hair will be

1/4 heads (6-7.5in circumference): 1/4-1/3 oz.

1/6 Mature tinies (3in circumference): 1/4 oz, the usual minimum order, will be a ton

Processing mohair yourself is cheaper, but it's a lot of cleaning and combing.

Making the wig base

Fabric base: sheer woven fabric or thin stretch fabrics (pantyhose, mesh hair nets, etc) in a color that does not clash too much with the skintone of your doll

The smaller the doll and the shorter the hair style (especially exposed hairlines!) the thinner you want to go to avoid seeing the wig cap too easily.

Cover the doll with plastic wrap, tighten the fabric as much as possible to mold to head, spread glue around so fabric will stay in this shape.

Putting rubber bands around ears helps shape.

Putting the fiber on

I'm pretty sure preparing wefts beforehand by gluing them on a nonstick mat and then cutting off pieces to stick on the wigcap is easier for exact placement, but I think that takes too long, so I just glue that straight on the wigcap.

I prefer not to use sewn wefts because I don't like that chunky line.

Work back to front and/or wherever the hair parts.

Hold up a small lock of hair and then use the silicone tool to swab a lil glue on it.

The smaller the doll, the smaller bundles you want to add the hair in so the bulk level isn't too crazy. Not as big of a deal for 1/3 scale dolls, the biggest deal with 1/6 dolls.

Hairline and hair parting methods

Rooting

I use the rooting tool from Dollyhair (but you can basically use any small hand tool with an adjustable chuck that can hold the rooting needle)

Pros:

Imitates growing hair

More versatile in styling options if you root a large sections of the wigcap because then the hair can flow in different directions without exposing which way it was glued

Cons:

Slow, the more realistic you want to go, the smaller each root plug should be. I use size 8 or size 6 needle on 1/3 dolls, but I could probably go smaller.

Tiny bits of hair and glue inside the gap may affect the fit of the wig cap.

Takes three billion years to dry the inside because you will swab glue on the inside of the wigcap and then smoosh the wig cap against plastic wrap on your doll's hair to keep the wig cap properly molded to your doll's head

Works terrible on mature tiny 1/6 wigs

TTRPG Mini Grass Style

Pros:

Fast, just put a daub of glue and slap a tuft on

Hair can be pushed in multiple directions without looking awkward

Cons:

Harder to do with longer hair and thicker fibers, may just tip over before the glue dries. Works better with short suri alpaca or tencel than mohair

Fold Over Method

Pros:

Easy!

Can hide wigcap edges

Cons:

Not realistic

Works worse with stiff fibers that may not lay flat after being folded over (may need heat treatment to work)

Ugly glue zone

Chopping the wig open to cram in fibers where the hair parting is

Pros:

Less ugly glue zone than the foldover method

Cons:

Margin for error for not warping the entire wig cap is not great! More risk than the rooting method.

Wildcard showing up with a steel chair! (mostly because this doesn't really need a separate post)

Flocking + painted edges

Pros:

Fast, swab on the adhesive and shake a ketchup bottle of fiber powder on it.

Useful for shaved hair

Cons:

Well, now you have Craft Herpes (glitter, fiber dust, y'know how it is...)

Not all doll sculptors have very flush headcap boundaries

Gotta redo the face-side of the flocking whenever you want to change the face-up

How to spot a Recast store.

First of all, what is a recast?

A recast is an unlicensed copy of a BJD, a knockoff, a fake. Usually the dolls are bought from a legit company (sometimes not even from the recast company itself, but from supporters), a mold is made (either making a physical mold or a 3D scan) and then the dolls can be mass produced. Usually made in China, but there are exceptions to this.

I'm not going into detail here on why they are a big problem, there are tons of posts about this on the internet. They are bad, they destroy the dollmakers and artists that I love, if you're fine with that, this blog isn't for you.

This blog is for those, that want to buy legit BJDs and don't want to accidentally buy a recast, which is getting harder and harder.

I'll put this under a cut, because this is gonna get a bit lengthy.

What not to do: Google "buy BJD", you'll literally get a ton of Ali Express listings of knockoff BJDs.

You will have to do some research up front, you need to know what company you want to buy. For that, you can go to the BJD hashtag, here, on instagram, sometimes even Twitter, and see if there is something you like. Usually people also tag the company and sculpt, and if not, asking usually gets the reply.

You can also go to one of the many official dealer pages and just click through their dolls to see if you find something that you like.

Stay away from Ali Express and Amazon. Both of these pages are riddled with knockoffs. Idk if there are actually any legit sellers on Ali, if there are, they are few. I think Dollzone sells on Amazon, but seriously, most of the dolls there are fakes.

Ebay and Etsy are also full of recasts, but you can find some legit dolls there.

So, how do you spot a recast store? Let me show you some hints, that are usually a dead giveaway.

A lot of different styles.

This is the header of an etsy shop. While the two on the left might be from the same maker, the other two are very different. (The one on the right is a doll from Fairyland, one of the, if not the most recasted company out there).

Different styles only make sense, if the seller is a distributor/dealer. If it's not a dealer, back out.

Which brings us to the next point:

Generic names.

If a shop were a dealer, they would give you the names of the companies and sculpts.

Example from an official dealer:

See how you can choose the company, size, and then the sculpts? Recast shops don't give you that (there's one exception, that I'll mention later).

They give you "1/4 BJD Doll MSD", "Girl BJD 1/6" or if they wanna go all out "1/3 BJD Doll 60.5CM Full Set BJD Doll With Clothes Resin Toys Best Gift for Girls Hand Made Doll Custom Dolls OOAK Art Doll diy Dolls".

They want to stay as generic as possible, so the newbies that google for "buy bjd" will be redirected to their pages.

If you find generic names, back the hell out of there. I don't know a single company or dealer, that do not tell you what doll exactly you're buying!

Short production time

BJDs take time to make. They are not mass produced dolls, they are casted, sanded, strung and packed by small companies. Even the big names in this hobby usually are just a hand full of people. So it takes time.

Usually between 2-6 months. I don't know any company that actually gives you an estimate below 60 days. Sometimes they ship faster (maybe it's a popular sculpt and they have actually made some for stock, maybe they didn't have a lot of orders during that time, etc), but they don't usually give you a shorter timeline.

If your listing claims the doll will be shipped in 1-2 weeks? Bad news for you, that's usually a recast store.

Price

I hate to say it, but this is an expensive hobby. Dolls usually cost at least $200, oftentimes more. There are some companies that have cheaper prices, but if it goes below $150, I would definitely have a closer look.

Now, the price is usually the last thing that I mention, because before the price tag, you should check for all the things mentioned above. Only if you have a consistent style, specific names, and a timeline that makes sense, then you should check for the price.

I say that, because I know of one Recast store, that tries so hard to look legit, they actually put effort in it.

And that is the BJD Shop.

Look at that. You have company names, you have sculpt names, it looks like a legit dealer (if you ignore that their production time is 1-4 weeks).

But now look at the prices.

Not taking into account that this specific sculpt isn't even available from Fairyland anymore, the price? Is not even $100 (for blank doll).

Now let's look at the actual price by FL:

Rule of thumb: If a price is too good to be true, it very likely is.

So I recommend actually looking for the doll company, if you find a dealer you're not sure is legit, and compare the prices.

A good page for information is Den Of Angels. It's a forum, but a lot of things are easily available without account through Google. For example their dealer list. Is it complete? I don't know, maybe not, but it's a good start.

I hope this is helpful for anyone who isn't sure about a shop they want to buy from.

You enjoy collecting things for your ball jointed doll, clothes, makeup……you dress him up so nicely and pour your soul into taking care of it.

You treasure your one and only doll, as they are hella expensive, and this baby was a rare opportunity, sold at an incredibly low price second hand online in near brand new condition, you had to!

You remember taking it out of the box and looking at it so fondly, it glassy eyes staring back into yours. You know that it’s your treasure.

But someone seems to see you as their treasure as well.

Ever since your doll moved in, you’ve been finding odd things happening to you. You often receive packages from an unknown name, inside are always clothes, way too fancy and doll like for you.

You tried sending the clothes back, but when you check your packages, the address is always from your home. Of course, you don’t wear them, but when you don’t, you begin to find your clothes missing, one for every piece of clothing you receive, and at last, leaving you with no choice but to wear the ones with too many buttons and too much frills.

You would wake up in the morning with makeup on your face, painted lips and a deep blush and extended lashes, when you look in the mirror, you feel that you look just like a doll.

Through the mirror, your eyes meet with your doll on the shelf, you swear it was in a different pose last night……

So me and Resinbitz have been working on the BJD Wiki on Fandom since 2019 and just the other day we finally got a proper official banner/logo made for it. :)

We’d been meaning to get this done for uhh…longer than either of us would like to think about I’m sure, but we’re pretty hype to finally take this off the to-do list! If I remember right, it started off with me taking a picture of some Soom jointed hands I had making a heart shape and then quickly tracing over it in Procreate and sending it over to Resinbitz to do a proper design based on that. XD I ended up finishing off the image by lining her sketch and then coloring it (and learned that doing lineart is infinitely more enjoyable when it isn’t my own artwork lmao).

Biggest reason I am withdrawing from the hobby save a few dolls is fellow people in this hobby. It's not because I don't get likes on my instagram (thanks for screwing the algorithm, though), but the serious ass kissing I see. That, and people with that permanent 'mean girl' attitude.

This might out me, but I was a mod in a doll group. Seeing the admins and mods talk about other people behind their back, people that they were friends with, never left the back of my mind. I don't give a damn whether or not someone wants to drag my name through the mud, but I don't want to be a part of anything on this earth if it means associating myself with that behavior. Disgusting.

Another reason is that I am so tired of seeing the never ending ass kissing that goes on. If you fall in with the right group of people, you won't receive an honest opinion about your work. photography skills, etc. If you are out of the group, then it definitely adds pressure to you and your work and makes you question what kind of content you are putting out if it never gets shared or glossed over in groups/discord/DOA, etc. There are some very nice and incredibly kind people in that circle, and I won't be naming names. If you know, you know.

I spent so much of my time in this hobby trying to compare myself with others that I forgot the primary reason for me getting into the bjd hobby in the first place: my happiness. And that's the square one that I am going back to. Limited photo sharing, engaging with other hobbies, and all the rest.

BJD Rambling

Ordered my first BJD from Alice Collctions, a 1/4 from Huajing, after nearly six months of obsessively checking the website and doing my research. Crazy how I spent nearly every single day almost every hour (except for when I'm sleeping) checking the website, the reddit page, instagram tags, etc. Initially wanted to buy from MYou since I adored their Basil's head sculpt and was in love with their girl body, but maybe next time. I went to Radio Kaikan in Akihabara to see the Dietrich sculpt for myself because I was eyeing her, so gorgeous! Only found one owner pic on instagram of her in tan skin and she was so, so beautiful, but something threw me off about her eyes! The MYou girl body is gorgeous though, especially with the large bust. I really love the new 1/3 doll they came out with, Letina? Oh, so, so gorgeous! I am in love with her, I wish she was in the 1/4th scale though, she would be a perfect second doll! Just something about her draws me in, but I don't think 1/3 scale is right with me, too big. I saw a 1/3 Gem of Doll on display, and was blown away by how insanely detailed they are, especially their clothing, they were! The girls even had long nails! Always adored Gem's designs, just wished they had more skin tone options, but I understand why some companies have only limited options. My next goal is to save up enough money for a second BJD, a partner for my first because I think life would be lonely for him and I'd like him some company. I can't wait! Travel Blog - Dokomi 2024 - Sunday

Last day of Dokomi, and last travel Blog. A completely new character to premiere... Howard Link! I had very unexpected meetings and the time was running out so fast as it was also... travel day.

As always my day started super early, I had to park my car at the local grocery store as the parking lot of the hotel was full the evening before. Therefore I went there in pouring rain to hope to move the car closer now as I didn't want to carry my luggage through rain.

While I was at that... yes... I checked my engine in full cosplay and also bought a pretzel JUST FOR THE JOKE that Link is german and seriously what is more german than a german pretzel?

Again quite early I left for the con, it was still raining but I got a good parking spot bc it was so early. I decided to leave the coat on as it was not that cold but with the rain it would cool down more and Link only had that longsleeve... so... stealing Nea's coat here.

I decided just to run around a bit before the halls opened I didn't have much hope to be recognized as Link is a rather unknown character here, the series never got a release of the second season here not to mention Hallow was just randomly streamed, the Manga is treated very poorly by the publisher and yeah... it's not a well known series anymore.

So paint me surprised that mere minutes after entering the area I came across kyomaru_ko (IG) who just right away asked "ARE YOU HOWARD LINK" and I was so baffled by that, we chatted over 30 minutes and wow, it was so so nice to meet you. Please let me know if you really plan to do a Noah Cosplay Group again I am so in for that TAT

This was the whole vibe of my day to be honest, it gave me so much positive energy. Wow.

Next up was exploring the gaming hall and the j-fashion hall. I stumbled upon Dollce's booth and saw increble work across the hall.

Then I found the other booth, the one with the BJD Eyes. I just said "Hi" and the vendor said "Hi" and then we eyed each other for like .. a minute without saying anything. And her helper was like "wtf is wrong with you two" ... then she asked me if I was Seiji and I was "... yes" and then I finally had a second to progress the crafts and of course. The vendor is my very dear friend Sarah. I haven't seen her since 2019 and wow. I am still so happy I was able to see her again and I am sad I didn't take a photo WITH her. We talked very long and I asked her how she recognized me (I changed a lot since we saw each other and I was in Cosplay.. I mean I was blonde when we saw each other in Lübeck but Cosplay is Cosplay) and she said "... it was your beautiful brown eyes" .. I almost cried. The day overall was so wonderful already and this was the sugar on the cream. Really.

I then finally got to eat my morning snack. I tried Taiyaki the first time :D I was not that brave to choose a exciting filling... went for Nutella XD sometimes simple things are good.

The rest of the day was just me vibing here and there, i checked out some more of the halls, finally visited the friends/artists I got to know at the alley for the day, fetched my last bubble tea ...

and then went to the park. Time was passing so fast...

Still can't get over how pretty that park is, seriously.

Met some friend again and even FINALLY the people I was looking for on friday. I learned there was another Lavi and on Friday even a Mana ... which would have been perfect as I was Nea. But we decided to just arrange a meeting point the next time.

But I found a Cross (Hizashi.kun (IG)) and short before I left I found scarlett (Allen from the LBM) aaaaand Alice <3

The day was ending soon I settled down with another snack to end the day before a long drive home. It was a roll with veggies, hummus and the like, it was not very filling though :') but I still had my little snack box and the cinnamon roll so I decided it was enough.

I opened up the blind boxes before I left though as I was curious which I got (oh and watched a little perfomance before I found Alice).

And I GOT EXACTLY the ones I wanted to have??? Wow?? Like?? The Cabbage and Pumpkin dog and then the Clown on the carousel horse. i am usually not that much into the blind boxes but I tasked myself in buying something every day.

I quickly got the wig off then and headed home. Ate inbetween in the car and the overall drive went quicker than on the way to the con ... if it wasn't for the fact there was another construction side and I needed 5 hours... again.

I made a stop for some fries and a mc flurry (yes I was just curious how the white twix one is as I don't have a McD/have to drive 20 minutes for one).

The last thing that day was unloading the car and just fall into bed. The day after I lasted until 10 then i felt how dead beat I was and I just tried to somehow survive, good thing I had it off.

If I go for another time I surely need to get back on monday, this was originally my plan but due the Euro Cup hotel rooms were expensive af and there was two matches in Düsseldorf on Monday... I didn't need that.

Overall this was a beautiful convention I didn't have a single bad mental health moment (aside that quick scare with the claw), I didn't feel alone as I was able to send VMs to my friends, I had the courage to do so many things and had quite the confidence boost in several regards.

What a beautiful way to end the first half of the con season for the year. I have 4 more to attend.

The next one will be the Nipponcon in Bremen and I have already teamed up with KandaxMusa to do a partner cosplay there.

(although of course now that i've thought about it, an au of beckett ending up blood-bound to caine is an extreme mood. the direction is either very dark or very crack, though: on the one hand beckett probably has about a century worth of questions alone, on the other he unwittingly sipped so much of Caine's Own Blood he's discovering new novelty damnations all the time)

Oh my god he's the centre of his very own Greater Seattle Polycule. This one spans the entire planet and several millennia. They meet someone new and Sascha's just like. "This is Ilias, my boyfriend. And this is Beckett, everyone's boyfriend." Ilias and Fatima immediately become fond of each other upon meeting despite never having laid eyes on each other just via Ilias -> Sascha -> Beckett <- Lucita <- Fatima. Goddamn spectacular.

Also Lucita helped attack Dracula's castle once, imagine them meeting post-Price of Hospitality and just staring daggers at each other and Dracula's like, "...so how's my Bride?" and Lucita's just, "Excuse me I had dibs first" and Beckett's in the background wearing just his sunglasses with the diary posed strategically like, "Hey now, there's more than enough of me to go around ;D" and everyone in the vicinity up to and including Caine is just like. Yes. We know.

16" Fashion Dolls

In the 1990s and 2000s there was a boom in larger-than-barbie-scale fashion dolls, and I collected a lot of 16" dolls from Robert Tonner, Alexander doll co., Ashton-Drake doll, and a couple by Integrity toys/Jason Wu. Nowadays you can pretty much only buy them on Ebay, alas. The good news is that Barbies and other 11.5" dolls have become a lot cooler and more diverse lately, although the quality of clothing available for Barbie-sized dolls still doesn't match the fashions for the larger dolls.

The Doll Morgue I store most of my 16" fashion dolls in an Ikea wine-bottle shelf thingy, and this is the result.

Ball-Jointed Dolls from Asian companies are my favorite dolls; they tend to be quite expensive and there are long timeframes for manufacture and delivery. These are ideal dolls if you like to do custom stuff - you can change out their eyes, wigs, they're large so they're easy to sew for, and they often come with unpainted faces so if you like doing "face ups" (as face painting for BJD's is usually termed), they're a nice canvas for this. I've had most of the ones in my collection for 15+ years, since after my son was born I switched to spending most of my money on him. They've all held up very well, though, and I still enjoy them tremendously.

Who am I?

♡ I go by Asphalt and Travis.

♡ I use they/them, it/its, ny/nym pronouns (ny/nym is basically just he/him pronouns but replace the h with n and the i with y). I use he/she in a silly way (primarily when joking about myself in the 3rd person. you can do that if u want as long as u 1) understand i am nb and my gender has no relation to the gender binary and 2) you are also silly).

♡ I’m non-binary, aromantic, t4t, lesbian, and sapphic. I've been on T for about a year and I've been out as trans for about 4. I'm not fully human. I’m a white American who lives in the South. I'm fluent in English and know a bit of French.

♡ I am not going to disclose all my mental issues, but I am diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, depressive disorder, and ADHD. I have speech & auditory processing issues and dissociation+depersonalization symptoms. I probably have other stuff up with myself but it's not diagnosed and it's a secret so shhhhh.

♡ I primarily post digital art (I use Procreate (or IbisPaintX, not super often tho) w/ an I Pad + Apple Pencil or I use jspaint with a trackpad), but I do a lot of traditional art (graphite, colored pencil, gouache, pastels, collage- basically any medium I can get my hands on. Primarily graphite though). I also knit and dabble in other physical arts like that. One of my favorite projects I've done is making a lithograph print. I’ve also made a long furby and my current pipe dream is to make a BJD. I'm also working on making a suit of armor out of soda cans :)
