EL ARTE DE REUNIR LO PERDURABLE, Por Juan Carlos Recio
Es la primera vez (desde aquella antología de los 80 de Retrato de grupo, bastante lograda si comparamos la enfermedad provinciana de las antologías «amiguitos del círculo», de la que se ha padecido por años, en aquella resistencia de lo malévolo, a la que llamamos la isla y su diáspora censurada. Creo que Queredlas Cual las Hacéis es otro acierto sobre mujeres poetas, con la intención muy seria de Noel Castillo, si mal no recuerdo, esta última antología con una selección bastante interesante, marcada por el buen gusto y la buena presentación); hasta ahora, que me encuentro y releo Exodus: Versos desde afuera, que marca no solo un buen juicio estético del libro, sino que es también, como antología, la primera que asume la distintiva de la notabilidad poética como asunto, no de merodear en conceptos tan de poca importancia como serían su idoneidad geográfica versus otro provincialismo de defecto.
En este caso, se obtiene un repaso de algunas de las voces más sostenidas por su calidad atemporal y por su carácter de voz independiente contra coros o manierismos que acosan desde su peligrosa propagación de lo cheo y lo insulso, una «disparica» bala sin pólvora, de la que nos referimos casi siempre a aquellos que suenan la lata sin cola para su caballo en carrera de fondo; todo lo contrario, los poetas aquí reunidos han cruzado sus propias fronteras universales, y despojados de sus prejuicios o de algún tipo de pose snob a conveniencia.
Todos los reunidos bajo este título se convierten en piezas de antologar, conformes a la estructura del libro y con independencia de él, dado el logro de contenido, donde no por asomo o facilísimo se queda en la iniciación o lo que improvisa. Tocado, además, desde una conciencia creativa lúdica, por esos fondos existenciales y literarios, clásicos y postmodernos, no son incluidos por asiduas conjeturas de lo que sería una cultura emigrante, llena de críticas a sus razones de búsquedas.
Por el contrario, los participantes han obtenido una asimilación cultural coherente con el hecho geográfico de vivir afuera, no solo en la diáspora, sino afuera del alcance de esos facilísimos de moda y nombres repetitivos, por ser causantes de sus escandalosas posturas entre lo ambiguo y lo inconexo.
Líbranos Dios de ese mal, parecen contarnos las piezas poéticas aquí reunidas en su exégesis más lúdica y amplificadora de múltiples ascensiones de rango a profundidad y estilo, que no se acumula por chavacanería o prisa; los autores no ven la importancia de sus nombres, solo sus obras les dignifican.
Los invito a buscar las ediciones Exodus de Ego de Kaska Foundation, y los invito a entender el libro dado como la determinante del respeto a los autores que se invitan a publicar en la casa editorial.

T/N: The term “fictional world” in this article refers to the world-building and creation of a fictional universe as it applies to storytelling in music, similar to cinematic universes for films.

The K-pop girl group 'Dreamcatcher's a team that's more popular internationally than domestically. You can tell by looking at the YouTube video comments of their representative song, "BEcause". Foreign languages such as English are more popular than Korean.
They broke away from the common sexy and innocent girl groups early on. Utilizing a unique fictional world like a dystopia, they've presented a dance with a clear narrative in their hardcore music that resembles rock metal. Many claim that they are a "K-pop girl group of the future". 
This is why Dreamcatcher stood next to Kyuhyun of the group Super Junior and A.C.E during Indonesia Week of "2021 Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange Mokkoji Korea" (Mokkoji Korea), which took place online on the 8th until the 14th.
"Mokkoji Korea" is a program that actively spreads and promotes Korean life culture to Hallyu fans all over the world. It is receiving praise from the industry for its support of cultural exchanges with other countries and Hallyu marketing in related industries.
Last year, through the establishment and operation of a Korean life culture platform, it garnered a total of 9.6 million webpage views with 2 million visitors (international visitors making up 94%) from 156 different countries. The 15 Mokkoji lives that took place were viewed 2,889,077 times. This is thanks to the help from the "diplomatic mission" and "K-culture messengers" of featuring idol groups.
This time, Dreamcatcher conducted a real-time live broadcast with the topic of Korea's camping culture. They took the time to introduce Korean snacks such as bungeo-ppang and hotteok.
On the 14th at Dongdaemun's Vspace in Seoul, we met Dreamcatcher's leader JiU who expressed her satisfaction and said, "The fact that we get to introduce Korean culture and communicate with our international fans is something to be thankful for". 
All the members enjoy eating Korean snacks. JiU said, "Since yakgwa is in the shape of a flower with petals, I eat [each petal] one by one". SuA said contently, "Snacks like bungeo-ppang and hotteok come in pre-prepared meals nowadays, it's nice and convenient". 
They had a meaningful time in which they were able to learn about Indonesian culture as well. SuA nodded, saying, "We learned that Indonesian camping culture has a lot of greenery, and [people camp] in places with more nature than cities."
Dreamcatcher has grown by facing many ups and downs. They were reorganized after the debut of the girl group "Minx" in 2014. They recruited new members in addition to the existing ones, and they formed a team once again to become the Dreamcatcher of today.
Dreamcatcher has hardcore fans due to their clear concept, which is reminiscent of a game. Just like their group name, derived from the Native American spiritual object that is meant to chase away nightmares, they have a dark image.
T/N: The reporter notes that the spelling of the object in Korean is 드림캐처 (deu-rim-kae-cheo), but the group's name is 드림캐쳐 (deu-rim-kae-chyeo).
Good K-pop idols aim for recognition and not personal taste. Dreamcatcher's unique concept is not a means to pull in fans, but it is a place for solidarity with people in a world that is lonely, and at times even painful. After first debuting in 2017, this is how international fans have come to relate to Dreamcatcher, as they have toured many places such as South Africa and Europe. The size of their concert venues gradually increased, and before COVID-19, all of their venues on their European tour had more than 1000 seats.
Their 2019 performance in Belgium held with the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) drew an audience of 4000. Choi Yuri, leader of the KOFICE exchange business team, said, "I was shocked to see enthusiastic fans not only from Belgium but all over Europe, who came to the performance". 
In addition, Dreamcatcher will be one of the performers next June for one of the world's biggest music festivals, "Primavera Sound" in Spain. It is a music festival started in 2001 that is representative of Spain, and it has a big reputation for its unexpected and progressive line-up. This time, the line-up consists of prominent artists such as Massive Attack, The Strokes, and Dua Lipa. Dreamcatcher is the only K-pop idol to be invited.
Gahyeon said, "A long time ago, we once rented the first floor of a restaurant in Seoul in order to shoot our album jacket. The restaurant on the second floor was still operating, and it was fascinating when there were more foreign customers than Koreans who recognized us.
JiU expressed her surprise, saying, "There's a lot of English comment on our content. We're on the rise internationally, and it feels like a dream to be able to perform at Primavera Sound".
More than anything, Dreamcatcher is receiving positive reviews from international music officials. Dami said excitedly, "It's fascinating how professionals involved in music and band musicians are reacting so strongly. Usually, you'd think that rock music is 'music that's far' from what idols do, but nowadays there are band music programs and more opportunities to get into [rock music], so I think more people are listening". 
Dreamcatcher's fanclub is "InSomnia", meaning a lack of sleep. The place that the members want to go to the most is Northern Europe. They are gaining fans in the region, famous for the frequent midnight sun phenomenon often causes insomnia. Northern Europe is also a "hardcore music powerhouse" with many metalheads.
Since the members want to visit a variety of countries, they are taking various foreign language classes, including English. Yoohyeon, who especially has a great interest in foreign languages, has recently started learning Spanish.
Dreamcatcher is also interested in social issues. Their representative song "Scream" is based off the motif of "witch hunting", which is prevalent in not only medieval but also modern times in the form of baseless rumors and malicious comments that are widespread on the Internet. The Dreamcatcher members have witnessed those who make reckless comments while they communicate online. Siyeon once said in a cool manner, "Just because you have a hole under your nose doesn’t mean it’s a mouth". After this, she was picked as one of the "girl crushes" among K-pop fans.

Yoohyeon is interested in environmental issues such as recent global warming. She said, "I heard that there's a lot of plastic being found on the sand of beaches. It's such a shame like things like that happen, and I want for us to do what we can in saving the environment". 
One of the reasons why Dreamcatcher has such a strong sense of individuality is because all seven members have different personalities, preferences, and perspectives on life. They do not even have any members with the same MBTI types. SuA (ENTJ), Gahyeon (ISTP), JiU (ENFP), Dami (ISFJ), Siyeon (ENTP), Yoohyeon (ENFJ), and Handong (ISFP) boasted their solid teamwork.
The team itself has united through their unique concept, and it has become a reliable foundation for the members. Thanks to it, all of them were each able to grow as human beings and develop technically.
The once unconfident and very shy Dami expressed her satisfaction, saying, "I feel much more relieved as I perform. I've also gained a lot of confidence". Handong, who put in a lot of effort in their early days since her vocal tone did not suit their rock sound, said contently, "I gained strength in my voice by putting in effort to change the way I sing". 
Dreamcatcher is preparing even more concepts. The members known as the "fairies of dreams" have only expressed nightmares so far. JiU hopes, "We also want to tell the stories of various dreams, such as prosperous dreams or prenatal dreams. We also want to enter the domestic music chart". 
Siyeon said, "I'm happy if more people relate to the Korean we sing to", and SuA added, "I hope the members become more individually recognized". Gahyeon added, "We've gone on many tours and got nominated for first place many times, but we still haven't hit the top. I want to hit the top". 
What evil energy does Dreamcatcher, who filters out nightmares and only makes us dream good dreams just like their group name, want to defeat the most at the moment? COVID-19. "I want COVID-19 to be over as soon as possible so we can communicate with our fans as much as we want".

I don't normally post this sort of thing on social media but a dear friend of mine needs some help. My friend Lorie Duff has been honoured to represent Canada in the Gobi Desert Cup Horsemanship Endurance Race in Mongolia. She is dedicating her race and journey this August to the CHEO Foundation (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario). Her daughter was recently diagnosed with a rare skin disease and CHEO has been a become a big part of her family. Gravados de Henri Moore: as tres dimensións sobre o papel
A “cegueira para as formas” é máis común ca cegueira para as cores. Cando os cativos aprenden a mirar, ao comezo só distinguen formas en dúas dimensións (...) Aínda que poidan chegar a experimentar unha considerable agudeza na percepción das formas planas, as persoas non alcanza a realizar nunca os esforzos intelectuais e emocionais necesarios para captar a forma en toda a súa realidade espacial. As anteriores verbas, escritas polo escultor inglés en 1937, falan dunha das destrezas que ha ter un escultor, e tamén permiten a aproximación á comprensión dos seus debuxos e gravados. Quen dixo que Moore non estivo na Praia das Catedrais?

O burato (nunha escultura) conecta un lado co outro e, así, esa forma devén un volume tridimensional. O burato pode ter máis significado formal ca unha masa sólida. Esculpir con aire é posible, cando a pedra contén só o burato, que é a forma buscada e planificada. O misterio do burato: a enigmática fascinación das covas nas ladeiras e mais nos cantís. (H. Moore, A Voz do Escultor, 1937).
A galería Marlborough de Barcelona vén de abrir este novo e tan estraño curso cunha exposición de 18 gravados de Henri Moore: Henri Moore. Prints. Trátase de traballos que executou o escultor inglés entre os anos 1973 e 1983, é dicir cando xa contaba entre 75 e 85 anos. Son traballos, logo, de madurez e/ou senectude. A mostra é moi atractiva e interesante tanto pola calidade dos traballos como pola súa diversidade. Os gravados son algúns en branco e negro, como se dun deseño normal se tratase, mentres que outros moitos presentan policromías que animan iso tan importante para un escultor: a tridimensionalidade. Pouco cómpre observar os gravados de Henri Moore. Prints, para decatarse que a man que os perfilou é a dun artista afeito a mirar máis aló; máis aló do papel, máis aló das dúas dimensións. Respecto dos temas, hai un que domina por riba dos outros, a maternidade, a relación nai-fillo.
O mesmo Henri Moore (1898–1986) ten dito que o interese por este tema da maternidade vén da preocupación e dificultades que o matrimonio tivo para concibir un fillo (ao final naceu Mary, única filla), e tamén da observación directa de Irina Radetsky, a súa muller, nas súas relacións con Mary. Entre os gravados que agora colgan na Marlborough non faltan tampouco escenas de familias así como as inevitables reclining figure.

É ben sabido que Moore tivo na figura humana (e máis especificamente feminina) o centro das súas investigacións e realizacións prácticas. Fidel á súa traxectoria, nestes traballos de madurez que agora colgan en Marlborough (Henri Moore. Prints) domina a figuración máis aló da abstracción. As figuras de mulleres e nenos son perfectamente identificables, a por de que nalgúns casos amosen simplificacións das súas formas. Os 18 gravados proveñen de New York e son propiedade da propia galería Marlborough, que conta con importantes fondos de obra do escultor.
Escribiu Moore no ano 1937: Para cada idea hai un tamaño adecuado. (...) O diminuto e mais o colosal entrañan unha emoción específica. A importancia das dimensións. Moore ten hoxe ciscadas esculturas públicas por moitos lugares do mundo. Mesmo o encargo que recibiu para crear unha figura que iluminase a entrada da sede da UNESCO (1958), unha figura reclinada que se podería interpretar como unha imaxe da Nai Terra (unha Pachamama). Segundo se desprende das súas verbas o miúdo e mais o xigante conlevan máis emoción. Aprendeuno das esculturas antigas? Das pezas exipcias? De figuras prehistóricas? Henri Moore foi sempre un admirador das artes xeradas por culturas antigas (gregas, mesopotámicas, exipcias, americanas). Aprendeu do colosalismo exipcio a forza emocional das grandes dimensións?
Alberto Giacometti, escultor moi persoal, ten afirmado que en tempos prehistóricos os humanos traballaban materiais, figuras, ata deixalas reducidas ás dimensións da man, transportables, pois a manualidade era case a única unidade de medida en tempos nos que a recolección, a caza e a pesca eran as actividades que garantían o sustento a grupos nómades. Tiraría de aí Moore a emoción que lle producían as formas pequenas? O propio escultor deixou escrito que nos veráns percorría praias á procura de rebos con formas especiais, que lle provocasen suxestións.
Henri Moore sempre estivo moi Interesado pola arte antiga. As súas visitas ao Louvre, e mormente ao British Museum eran constantes. Moore pasmaba diante dun busto exipcio ou sumerio, emocionábase coa arte maia e estremecía co engado da pedra e da raiceira. Foi por acaso un clásico? Participou do surrealismo e andou preto da abstracción e mais da xeometría cubista, pero sempre foi independente nas preferencias e temas traballados. Por iso foi tan criticado, entre outras razóns pola teima de xunguir natureza e arte, así como por non abandonar de todo a figuración (nas súas pezas, grande e cativas, monumentais e públicas, sempre é recoñecible a imaxe da que arrincou o traballo escultórico); nin “afiliarse” a ningún ”ismo” concreto.

Desde o Gótico, a escultura europea quedou recuberta de mofo, de mala herba (e de toda sorte de excrecencias que sepultan a forma). Brancusi impúxose a misión particular de eliminar aquel mofo e lograr que recobráramos a conciencia das formas. Para conseguilo tivo que concentrarse en formas moi sinxelas, aterse ao “unicilíndrico” da escultura, refinar e pulir unha simple forma ata o extremo do preciosismo. (H. Moore, A Voz do Escultor, 1937).
Como xa se dixo, entre os gravados que a galería Marlborough expón agora ( Henri Moore. Prints) é doado identificar algún gravado de reclining figure, unha das constantes na creación de Moore. Esta figura sempre é feminina. O interese do escultor por tal postura vén de coñecer a escultura maia do Chac Mool, representado cos xeonllos dobrados, apoiado nos c��bados e mirando por riba do ombreiro. Nunha ocasión o artista dixo que era a posición que máis lle interesaba porque era a que daba máis liberdade ao corpo humano. Tamén é certo que Moore traballounas desde centos de perspectivas e con distintos motivos: a maternidade refuxiada no ventre baleiro de materia pero cheo de vida, a perfecta adaptación á paisaxe ou á arquitectura. Ás veces optou por xeitos figurativos mentres noutras a abstracción rouba os detalles e regala feitizo e grandiosidade. Foi tamén con estas figuras coas que máis experimentou, e rematou facéndoas en dúas pezas e mais en tres, co que a interacción co espazo e coa paisaxe é total. Cómpre afirmar tamén que en moitos casos as reclining figure de Moore teñen afinidades coas súas figuras de nais. A propia postura outorga un valor especial ao ventre feminino ao figurar como o eixo sobre o que gravitan as figuras. E se as crea en máis dunha peza, ese baleiro esencial que ocupa precisamente o ventre, vén sendo a parte definidora da figura que se refuxia en si mesma.
A familia Moore acabou por ir vivir a Hampstead, un barrio nas aforas setentrionais de Londres,    onde se estaban a instalar toda unha colonia de artistas: a súa amiga e compañeira de estudos, Bárbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo, Lee Miller e Roland Penrose, así como o moi afamado crítico de arte Herbert Read. Entre estas persoas foise producindo un frutífero intercambio de ideas e opinións.
Henri Moore –por biografía, polas súas relacións persoais- gravitou preto do cubismo, da abstracción e moito tamén do surrealismo (nos seus escritos insiste na importancia do subconsciente como depósito do que poden emerxer ideas, propostas). Curiosamente nalgúns dos gravados propiedade da galería Marlborough hai figuras que lembran directamente creacións de De Chirico. Aínda que este artista italiano é anterior á aparición do propio movemento surrealista, nas súas creacións metafísicas hai figuras case iguais á que anos máis tarde debuxaría Moore.

Unha das cousas nas que máis cartos investiu Moore foi na creación da Henri Moore Foundation.    Na que puxo como directivas á súa muller, Irina, e á súa filla, Mary. Esta institución que vela polo estudo, preservación e coñecemento da obra do escultor, leva catalogadas máis de 11.000 traballos (entre esculturas, deseños e outras modalidades formais) deste incansable investigador.
Ao marxe de contemplar esculturas de moitas formas e de diversas dimensións, é recomendable coñecer os debuxos que fixo das persoas que se refuxiaban no metro londiniense durante os bombardeos da II Guerra Mundial (Shelter drawings). E tamén, como non!, reclamar a atención sobre a obra Spanish prisoner (1939) coa que esperaba recadar fondos para a República Española. É un debuxo sinxelo e con moita forza. Uns arames de espiño interpóñense entre o preso e nós, e máis aló a figura parece estar, outra volta, cativa, de si mesma?, da realidade que lle tocaba vivir?, das españas que tanto feren?
Mes de maio de 2020. O planeta está vivindo tempos que xa se deran por pretéritos; e os países máis ricos –soberbios– cualificaran de medievais e irrepetibles. Tempos de pandemia. Meses de peche social, de negritude cultural. Desde esta perspectiva interior, doméstica, que lectura se pode facer hoxe das creacións de H. Moore? As creacións do que se considera o artista inglés máis importante do século XX tamén expresan a fraxilidade humana: as loitas morais, as eternas preguntas.
A pandemia é a metáfora dos tempos. A metáfora que se repite, contra da carreira tecnolóxica que predica a superación de calquera etapa anterior. Pandemias houbo na antigüidade, nos tempos medievais, nos modernos e mais nos contemporáneos. E a Arte sempre respondeu. Nestes tempos de peche, de illamento social xa se comezan a ver as primeiras manifestacións artísticas elaboradas a través de multipantallas que permiten as interaccións de varios individuos. A arte cómpre para vivir. Así aconteceu e acontece. Con anterioridade obras de Brueghel, do Bosco, entre moitos outros, reflectiron os medos, os exorcismos ante as mortes masivas; a democratización social pedida nos versos das danzas da morte; as vanitas barrocas. (¿As vanitas dos irmáns Santilari para a súa exposición Els 7 Pecats Capitals eran as trompetas do Apocalipse anunciando estas realidades?). O filme O Séptimo Sello (1957), de Bergman, foi resposta ás bombas atómicas? Tantos filmes e obras literarias á Guerra de Vietnam, etc., etc.

Debuxar paréceme unha válvula de escape útil para algunhas ideas que non teño suficiente tempo de traballar escultoricamente. Tamén emprego o debuxo como un método de estudo e observación das formas naturais. E ás veces debuxo só polo puro pracer de facelo. Nalgunhas ocasións comezo debuxando co único desexo de usar lapis e papel, e trazas liñas, tons e formas, sen ningún propósito consciente. (H. Moore, A Voz do Escultor, 1937).
No seu artigo Características da Escultura (1934), agora recollido no volume Ser Escultor, Henri Moore enumera, e comenta, as que para el son as cualidades escultóricas fundamentais: A fidelidade ao material, A observación dos obxectos naturais, A visión e a expresión e A vitalidade e o poder de expresión. Nestes catro eixos mete o escultor inglés a beleza, a natureza, a combinación da abstracción (expresión das ideas) e mais da figuración (referencias naturais), as formas e acabados que o propio material pide e/ou esixe.
Tampouco a ninguén se lle escapa a importancia do debuxo na arte, na historia da arte. O debuxo é o medio dinámico co que o pensamento visualiza e desenvolve as ideas. O debuxo –pola súa sinxeleza e apuro– é conceptista. Este xeito de expresión plástica prescinde dos detalles. Tamén se abre a sintetizar as imaxes da imaxinación. E dos soños. Por iso os surrealistas amaron e practicaron tanto o deseño. O deseño das súas propias obsesións, ou aquelas que –con automatismo– ían saíndo en grupo. Os debuxos ideados por Prévert, Tanguy, Miró e compañía en paralelo á escrita dos cadavre exquis. O deseño no reino da fantasía. Que máxica solución vía o Principiño naquela caixa que lle debuxou Saint-Exupéry?
Moito se leva falado en conferencias e por escrito sobre a existencia, ou non, do chamado Estilo tardío. O primeiro que reflexionou sobre este concepto foi Theodor W. Adorno, cando se refería ás últimas composicións de Beethoven e á simplificación de formas e propostas que denotaba no compositor. Logo, quen mirou de estruturar e dar forma a tal maneira de crear foi E. W. Said, atendendo á produción de escritores e músicos. Segundo os teóricos do Estilo tardío tal cousa pode darse só nos grandes creadores, nunha etapa final da súa vida, onde se mesturan a debilidade física, o cansazo e a actitude consciente do artista de que calquera cousa nova que faga pouco ou nada vai aportar á súa traxectoria artística. Esas últimas creacións caracterízanse –neses contados casos-- por apostar por esencialismos e pola simplificación. O Estilo tardío prodúcese (no caso que se produza): nun intre no que o artista, a pesar de ser dono absoluto do seu medio, abandona a comunicación coa orde social establecida da que forma parte e alcanza unha relación contraditoria e alienada con el mesmo (Adorno). Algúns estudosos observan esas especificacións do Estilo tardío nas derradeiras creacións de Picasso, cando ataca con forza os seus temas esenciais, ou na queima de lenzos por Miró, xa con 80 anos, ou nas pinturas negras de Goya.

É posible, xa que logo, pensar que os gravados que Moore artellou nos seus derradeiros anos –gravados que en número de 18 están agora na galería Marlborough-- entren dentro do que se considera Estilo tardío? En defensa de tal hipótese expóñense os problemas de artrite que padecía Moore perante eses anos, a sinxeleza de trazos e composicións, a reiteración daqueles temas que foron constantes vitais nos seus traballos: maternidades, reclining figure. Cincuenta anos despois esas obras sorprenden e emocionan, como o fan as últimas pinturas dun Renoir ancián (Les Baigneuses, 1918-1919) ou as derradeiras pezas de Francis Bacon na súa etapa madrileña.
A senectude –etapa de esencialismos por necesidade-- encrespa os conflitos entre eros e tánatos.

Everywhere you turned at Sacha’s Park, you saw a bat symbol.
Sacha Chenier suffered from cerebral palsy, blindness and other cognitive delays. On June 9, 2014, he passed away due to complications from epilepsy.
On Friday, three years later to the day, about 100 people gathered in L’Orignal to honour him by wearing apparel featuring his favourite superhero, and celebrate the opening of a park accessible to children like him.
Inspiration
In 2010, the family received a trip to Orlando through Make-A-Wish and that’s where they were first introduced to the idea of a “universal playground.”
Jason Chenier, Sacha’s father, said before then they were resigned to having Sacha watch other kids play from the sidelines.
But at this new playground, Matthew’s Boundless Playground, Sacha got to play with other kids and Sebastien, his older brother, pushed him on the swings for the first time.
When Sacha passed away, the playground remained one of the family’s fondest memories and they decided to replicate it near home.
The family bought a corner lot in L’Orignal’s Place La Seigneurie for $75,000 and donated it to the municipality to build the new park.
Through various fundraisers, a GoFundMe page—which reached nearly $360,000—and corporate donations, the park came to life late last year.
Chenier highlighted the community’s help in making the project a success during his speech on Friday morning.
The Review asked his parents why they decided on a park rather than donating to research or other organizations.
“Sacha was so much about joy,” said Jacquelyn Standing, Sacha’s mother. “And I’m not sure all the medical research in the world could or should have ‘fixed’ my son, but he sure deserved a place to play.”
“I think those are worthwhile donations too, but the park was something we felt had Sacha been here he would’ve benefited from directly,” said this dad. “It’s something I feel there’s a huge need for… it shouldn’t be an exception, but something that exists everywhere.”
It’s also something the community could rally behind, he added, and “see where your efforts went to is really fulfilling.”
Park amenities
“If you design something with the least able-bodied person in mind, then you can’t go wrong,” said Standing.
That’s exactly what they did for Sacha’s Park.
A roller slide, instead of a plastic one—which can cause a short in cochlear implants, said Standing—a ramp leading to to a platform that mimics the rocking of a boat, and elevated sandboxes are only some of the park’s different toys.
None of them would be accessible without the right surface—something Chénier’s parents said was an integral part of the park. Processed recycled tires make up a spongy surface that allows people with mobility issues can get to the equipment.
… Na, na, na, na BATMAN!
When Sacha was three, and Sebastien five or six, the family was strolling through a Toys “R” Us when Sebastien came running up to his parents with a batman belt, nearly pleading them to buy it.
This was unusual for him – according to his dad, his favourite superhero had always been Spider-Man.
“No, no, we gotta get it for Sacha,” said Sebastien. “His favourite superhero is batman.”
A little confused, his parents asked him how he knew that. “Sacha told me,” said Sebastien matter-of-factly.
“Let’s go with it; I love this idea,” said Chenier, reminiscing about the event. “It gave Sacha more personality.”
So, they bought the belt and kicked off a lifelong link to Batman. From t-shirts and backpacks to even redecorating Sacha’s room and meeting the superhero at amusements parks, “you name it, Sacha did it,” said Chénier.
Towards the end of his life, Sacha’s medical issues led to more and more appointments at CHEO. After what ended up being his last trip to the hospital, “we were heading out to the parking lot and there goes a golf cart, bright blue with a big bat symbol on the front, fully dressed Batman driving his Batcart,” said Chénier.
Of course, they needed to stop Batman.
He and Sacha took a picture together; Batman leaning on Sacha’s chair, both with wide grins.
“We didn’t think much of it,” said Chénier.
Three days later, Sacha passed away.
When preparing for the funeral service, the family was going through pictures to create a collage.
“Going through my phone, all of a sudden it took my breath away,��� said Chénier. “I realized the very last picture we ever have of our son was with Batman.”
With the recent passing of the original Batman, Adam West, maybe Sacha will truly get to meet his favourite superhero.
Winks to Sacha
The Batman connection shaped the creation of the park. Sacha’s parents immediately knew what colours they wanted: Batman’s classic blue and yellow.
The colours are only one of a few “winks” to Sacha hidden in plain sight. There’s also a bat symbol on one of the swings, and the pagoda bells are “the closest sound to what would have made Sacha laugh,” said Standing.
The family is also hoping to build a splash pad with a baby beluga theme, inspired by the Raffi song, which Standing says she must have sang to Sacha a moderate “85,000 times,” she jokes.
Now with the project nearly completed, Standing says she looks forward to just enjoying the park and remembering Sacha.
“I can think of no more fitting memorial for my son than a place of fun and joy.”

Y'Kok Ksor
Y’Kok Ksor, 74, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, after a battle with liver cancer. Born February 26, 1944, in Cheo Reo, Gia Lai Province, in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, he was the son of the late H’Ble Ksor. Y’Kok Ksor was a devoted husband, father and grandfather as well as a prominent political activist. Ksor is a member of the Jarai ethnic group and fought with U. S. Army Special Forces during the war in Vietnam, where he was awarded multiple honors for his bravery, including the Purple Heart. Y’Kok was President of the Degar Foundation, Inc., an organization whose mission is to preserve the lives, rights and culture of the Montagnard people. He was an ordained pastor, a devout Christian and member of Covenant Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, H’li Ksor; his four sons, Thomas Ksor, Daniel Ksor, Dr. John Ksor, Dr. Jonathan Ksor; his two daughter-in-laws, Dr. Marsheila Ksor and Tammy Ksor; his seven grandchildren, Hannah and Hayleigh, daughters of Daniel Ksor from a prior marriage, Mary H’li, Y’Kok Bajaraka (namesake of the deceased), Caroline Neihrahla and Y’Yohan Toeh, children of Dr. John and Marsheila Ksor, and Rebecca, the youngest, is the child of Daniel and Tammy Ksor. Family and friends are invited 3:00-7:00 PM Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307 to reminisce, grieve and support each other.
