Korosuu English Translation - Chapter 5: Shopping District Time

Previous Chapter: Chiba and Hayami Time

Note: Although this was directly translated from Japanese -> English, I didn't write it word for word, and instead went with variants that flow better with the English language for a much easier reading experience.

Funnily enough, this was the chapter (and the next one) that I was meant to translate after Nao finished all of hers because the Chinese translation that she was basing her translations on supposedly stopped at chapter 4.

That's when we, out of pure desperation, seek out @blazardragon to provide us with the raw scans because we recalled them having a copy of the Korosuu book but never got around to translating the novel. I can never thank them enough for providing us with the raw scans!

But why at a shopping district, you ask? Because it wasn't a bad place to target Koro-sensei.

All of Koro-sensei's five senses were terrifyingly sharp, but his senses of sight and smell were especially outstanding. But in the meantime, eyesight will be obscured by the crowd and any senses of smell will be dazzled by the overflowing scent of food that flooded the shopping district.

There were enough obstacles in the narrow street and it was the perfect environment for using ricochets.

When they rushed into the shopping district, it was unusually crowded with people. Many vans with food stalls were parked in the narrow pedestrian zone, and the scent of crepes and coffee filled the air.

"Hey, do you smell something terrible?"

Hayami groaned and pinched her nose. A strong odor was coming from somewhere.

"It's tonkotsu* ramen, I think. Apparently, the authentic ones would have their broth come from boiled pork bones, so it's pretty tough if you're not used to the smell."

Chiba, who answered, was also frowning.

"I guess it's from a stall somewhere. It's my first time smelling something like this in a shopping district." Hayami said.

As he was looking around, Chiba then heard a familiar voice.

"Well, I'm looking forward to it~"

Hearing that slimy voice, the two reflexively hid themselves in a nearby alleyway.

Just a few meters away from them, was a disguised Koro-sensei. The Iruma product exhibition seems to be quite successful, seeing that there was a small line by the entrance. Koro-sensei was lined up at the very end.

"I never thought I would be able to enjoy manju** while staying in Kunugigaoka. It never gets old no matter how many times I've done this~"

Nobody within a two meter radius dared to approach the suspicious looking figure, who not only was abnormally much taller than any of the guests, but was also speaking to himself without his wide grin moving.

"Thank god for the tonkotsu ramen…" Chiba breathed out in relief.

"If it wasn't for that stench, he would have caught us." Hayami agreed.

The two hurriedly left the place and started walking through the shopping district, pretending to be shopping.

To be able to assassinate Koro-sensei anywhere, the students of Class 3E had been secretly researching areas surrounding the school and, of course, the shopping district is one of them. With the help of Ritsu, they checked a building that had been vacant for a long time, along with its overall floor plan, and etc.

Chiba and Hayami compared the layout from their smartphones to their surroundings. The data is kept up to date, but it wasn't perfect. Since the state of the shopping district changes everyday, in this case, advanced checkups are absolutely necessary.

"Hey, where is that sniper? Is he already hiding somewhere?" Hayami asked.

"Yeah. That's what Karasuma-sensei said, so I'm sure everything is being readied by now. But maybe, it should be okay to do it…"

Hayami tilted her head at Chiba's words.

"Pardon?"

"If you're aiming for the kill, now should be the best time to stand in line, right? Yet for some reason, nothing has happened yet." 

"I see."

"I wonder why though. Is it a place that not even a legendary sniper can aim for, or is there another reason..? Either way, this one still takes time to prepare. We better hurry."

From there, Chiba noticed that the walls of an old wooden building a little ahead from them had a strange sheen to them.

"What's this?"

When touched, the surface was flat and hard. It looks like an acrylic plate, but rather than pasting something like that, it sticks firmly to the wall as if it was smeared with a liquid substance and solidified.

These walls were found in many places. This treatment was routinely applied to unevenly finished walls and places that seemed soft.

"Come to think of it, there aren't many signboards, right?"

Hayami whispered while comparing the smartphone with their surroundings. Small signs and decorations fixed to the walls and street lamps were missing in many places. There weren't even any screw holes left where the signboard was originally attached to and it looks like the surface has been smoothed and repainted.

"Looks like they're trying to keep the walls as flat as possible. Here and there."

Such traces were concentrated near the center of the shopping street.

In other words, the legendary sniper chose that area as the execution location.

"If that's the case, it's certainly difficult to aim at Koro-sensei's current position. The anti-sensei BB bullets are light, so they can't reach that far."

The product exhibition line was more than 30 meters away from the ricochet work.

It's enough to shoot normally, but if you want the bullet to bounce and reach the target, then the current distance would be twice too far.

Just as he said that, Karasuma's words during lunch break rang in Chiba's head.

"Wouldn't you think it's possible for someone who doesn't even know about Koro-sensei to assassinate him?"

Hayami gave him a nod.

"I agree."

Before long, the two of them took up positions on the second floor of the abandoned cafeteria. The building is facing the lot that the legendary sniper chose to execute.

It's impossible to shoot Koro-sensei from where he was lined up at the product exhibition. While he could still be seen, he's too far away.

Despite that, the two chose that place because they couldn't find another building that could be used where Koro-sensei is within sniping range, and that place is simply more reliable for ricocheting. They based their judgement on how high the certainty was.

It was still not an easy task to fire bullets as desired in the city. Unlike in the classroom, there are overwhelmingly many walls and bullets wouldn't bounce as calculated when you took the wind blowing into account. The legendary sniper who has successfully assassinated many times in that kind of setting was probably not an ordinary person.

As soon as Chiba entered the room facing the street, he spread a graphing paper onto the table and made a sketch using drafting tools. Supposedly, it was a very precise drawing, but Chiba still completed the draft in a matter of minutes, even including the mirrored drawing.

When Hayami looked through the scope again, Koro-sensei was wandering around the streets, unsure of where he was headed.

"Nyuyaa… I want to eat that too, this too, but my wallet can't afford it… I have to be very selective… No, but I can't leave this one out…"

Apparently, the smell of the food stalls lining the street was attracting him and thus, he was unsure where to go.

"I'm sure that sniper must be really annoyed by now."

Chiba muttered with a wry smile.

BANG.

Chiba jumped up from sensing a sudden strong impact near him.

"What was that?!"

Hayami, who was away from the window, called out to him.

"I think you almost got shot…"

At those words, she handed him a small compact mirror. Chiba took it and carefully brought it out the window while hiding from view.

From the mirror, he could see a thin layer of smoke around the window frame. It was probably a live bullet that was shot.

At the same time, Chiba's smartphone began to vibrate. The words "unknown incoming call" were displayed on the screen.

When Chiba picked up the phone, an unknown voice echoed.

"I'm sure the person in charge had told you all not to get in my way, right? Or was it not communicated well?"

Chiba takes the smartphone away from his ear and switches to speaker mode. Hayami nodded at him.

"I have no intention of interfering and I don't mind if you shoot first. However, if there is a chance, it is normal behaviour for us, Class E, to take it."

"Listen, kid."

There was clearly a hint of irritation in the voice that answered Chiba.

"Leave and go straight home. You students are nothing but hindrances. It's not my hobby to hurt children, but if you don't stop what you're doing, I'm sorry, but next time won't be a warning anymore."

After saying that, the call was cut off.

Next Chapter: Sniper Time

*Tonkotsu Ramen - from the word "tonkotsu" (豚骨/とんこつ) meaning "pork bones", is a ramen dish that originated from Fukuoka, Japan. Its soup broth is prepared by boiling pork bones in water for a significant amount time up to 18 hours.

**Manjū - (饅頭) - a traditional Japanese confectionary. Most variants of manju are typically made from flour, rice powder, kudzu (Japanese arrowroot), buckwheat, and a common filling of red bean paste. Sometimes, other fillings were used for manjū such as purple sweet potato, chestnut jam, and etc.

This is where my friends and I began joking about Hayami being Chiba's common sense filter.

Because what do you mean he's asking Hayami what was that loud bang that he heard RIGHT NEXT TO HIM, when he is literally within the area where the hired sniper could be at 😭

And the fact that he just blatantly ignored Karasuma's warning from last chapter?? Trying to find a loophole in that warning by doing his own thing while the hired sniper operates... DUDE YOU ARE LITERALLY ATTEMPTING AN ASSASSINATION. You are still interfering with the sniper's work 😭

I guess both Chiba and Hayami are now even with the whole nearly being shot with a live bullet by a professional assassin thing...

Shuichi Akai Emotional Line

Previously I've found some accurate evidence about this CP, so I tried to analyze it, and it took 10 years to prove this cp is real, maybe this CP is a little controversial, and some readers almost don't want to accept or close their eyes to this CP, and sadly  some of these CP fans who have so few fans hiding  because it was hit by a thunder storm, and the actions of some people who spread hatred on others for the sake of paper people.  Once again I emphasize as long as the author wants to draw it like that, you have no right to spread hatred.

 First of all I feel that Conan's emotional line portrayal has a strict style that a reasoning comic should have.  CP who wants to be described in detail will definitely make detailed explanations and progress.  For example, Takagi and Sato have published several Police Department love stories.  Shiratori and Kobayashi also have an image of the gradual heating of their relationship and the irreplaceable misunderstandings used to promote their relationship.  Chiba and Miike are very dramatic, unable to recognize first love, not to mention Shin-Ran and Hei-Kazu who are sprinkled with petty love scenes throughout the book.

 Seeing this, as long as Gosho wants to form CP, he will cast quite a lot of shadow.  Unfortunately from the point of view of Shuichi-Akemi and Shuichi-Judy's past, Gosho doesn't pave the way for both parties in an interaction that warms their feelings.  While it's a bit harsh to say this, Gosho really doesn't show any concern for Akemi or Judy in the comics, not to mention any further emotional portrayal.  From this, it could be seen that Gosho had absolutely no intention of forming these two CPs.  At least let Judy get her revenge on Vermouth, and become FBI boss in the future.

 Frankly, it's basically impossible for a CP who doesn't have clues and shadows to become an official CP in Conan Because CP involves the emotional line of the character, and then involves character development, it can even be said to be part of the character growth of the two people involved in CP.

 Just like Shin-Ran, the influence and significance of the two sides to each other was very important.  If one role is omitted, the establishment of other roles will definitely not be complete.  For Conan one of the important motivations for him to take action in order to meet his childhood lover Maori Ran who is very important to him, he wants to restore his body, or to protect her, it can be said that Conan's driving force is Maori Ran.  Therefore, forming a CP is basically the same as forming a character, there must be various details and layouts, and will never be skipped.

 When Gosho portrays CP, it also focuses on portraying the influence of the two sides on each other, and that is a positive influence.

 For example,

 1. Shiratori started to become a police officer because of the cherry blossoms straw that Kobayashi gave him.

 2. Haneda Shukichi inspired by his encounter with Yumi and has the motivation to challenge the seven crowns.

 3. Miike always remembers the traffic rules because of Chiba.

 4. Fushae also remembers Professor's warm words praising her hair like ginkgo leaves.

 Currently, the CP depicted by Gosho is very warm, and the plot description of each CP when they are in love is also a very heartwarming plot, so it can be seen that Conan's portrayal of CP tends to be positive and warm.

 Then, let's look at Shuichi-Haibara.  Shuichi initially had a complicated face, and  now he is happy, fond of children, his monitoring, his personal protection, and delivery of food after disguise.  Then saw Haibara who was gradually becoming cheerful, loosened her guard, became more relaxed.

 I can confirm that Gosho is intentionally portraying the positive influence the two have on each other, and this is one of Gosho's requirements for portraying CP.

 How would you like to see Shuichi-Haibara's CP?.

 First Gosho is not just a childhood lover control.  Of all the types of CP he forms the equation is pure love.  For example, Kogoro likes young girls, but his love is only for Eri.  Regardless of age or whatever, the definition of love for Gosho is pure love to be true love.  So if you want to see this CP, you have to think from the start Shuichi treated Haibara as a woman, and there was a genuine feeling of wanting to protect her.

1. Shuichi ambiguous treatment for Haibara.

  Starting from the promise of protection that Rye said for Sherry. According to some people this promise is just an ordinary promise that will be displayed in the final stages of the battle. On the other hand I think Gosho wrote this promise of protection to Akai during the Rye period there must be a story behind it, and not just an ordinary promise, there must be a preposition and a back sentence. Akai wasn't the type to make promises like this easily. He is not conan the hero of justice. He only has one life. So this promise is a very important promise to a person who is very precious to him. This promise of protection also affected his emotional line which also influenced his actions which resulted in his failure. If Akai's emotions weren't affected in any way, he might already be at the top of the organization, and managed to find out the facts about his father's case.

At first Akai uses everyone as his tool just to find the truth about his missing father, the line of emotion here is negative. Then he sacrifices Jody to destroy the organization, the emotional line is negative. Suddenly who knows when he said this promise of protection to Miyano Shiho, his line of emotion turned positive. So what was the reason Shuichi changed his resolve? Right now the answer that comes to mind is love. Gosho himself has a point of view about pure love. Like Amuro who likes Elena. So I think Shuichi's first love wasn't Jody, lover doesn't mean love. Just like the Akemi he used to get to know Shiho. Akai's relationship with Jody is also due to her relationship with Vermouth. Seeing the way Akai treats Camel and Jody, he treats Camel better, but he has a bad mouth with Jody. Camel even knows better about Akai's favorite whiskey. Jody doesn't know anything about Akai, So Jodie's guess about Akai in the red and black chapter can’t be trusted

There was an interview that asked this before, (I read the original interview in Japanese) and Gosho was a little confused about the answer, he replied that Akemi who lived in his heart was because Akemi had died, appreciation for the dead is to remember her in the heart. Like Akai who will always remember Scotch in his heart. So regardless of their age, Shuichi's feelings were purely wanting to protect the person he loved. So that could explain some of Subaru's redundant protective measures.

Next from Shiho's point of view. She is a girl who is strong on the outside but longs for love and needs someone on the inside. Even though she said she didn't need protection, it wasn't true. She recognized Shuichi with just one sentence, and instantly remembered his unforgettable promise of protection. She started to believe in Conan because Conan risked his life to save her from danger. She started to rely on Maori Ran and felt that she was protecting her like her sister. This meaning of protecting was a very precious thing to Shiho.

2. The misunderstanding between Shuichi and Shiho.

Conan as a third party believes that the organization killed Akemi because of Shuichi's relationship, so he thinks when Shiho confronts Shuichi she will be angry and even hate him. Conan thinks that way because he missed the opportunity to save her sister due to his incompetence. Haibara was angry and cried infront of him. Until the bus case Conan sacrifices himself to save her, and then she starts to believe in Conan, but the fact is not, which are actually Ayumi who influenced it. Haibara refuses Conan's protection. This meant that this promise of protection really had a big impact on her.

The picture of Shiho remembering Shuichi illustrates the following problem: First, Shiho remembers Shuichi without hatred. Second, Shiho didn't know Shuichi's real identity. The organization did not link Akemi's death to Shuichi’s disguise, and withheld information about Shuichi's true identity from Shiho. In Shiho's mind, Shuichi was not the culprit who killed Akemi. When Shiho appeared on the scene, she had already emphasized that the organization killed her sister. She also doesn't hate Shuichi because of Akemi's death. Shiho remembered Shuichi only two descriptions, one was her sister's boyfriend, and the other was the one who betrayed the organization. Both of them hinted at Shiho's previously mentioned feelings, and Gosho had alluded to these two aspects. Shiho misunderstands that Shuichi is the sister's boyfriend and the one who betrayed the organization.

  • Sister’s boyfriend means that Shuichi did not tell Shiho about his fake relationship, and did not explain his identity and purpose of joining the organization to Shiho, and based on this pretending to be a couple with Akemi was one of the misunderstandings between them.

• The one who betrayed the organization meant Shuichi left without saying goodbye. Why didn't Shuichi explain everything to Shiho before catching Gin? Why did Shuichi leave without saying goodbye to Shiho? The one who said that he would protect her with his life just disappeared. The implication is that he said he wanted to protect her with his life, but why did he leave her. This is the biggest misunderstanding between them.

  3. Hints on the Scarf

  Subaru cars have a total of two doors. Shiho had to take off the scarf and walk to the side door like the animation team did, but she climbed up on Shuichi's thigh (in reality, the space in the car was narrower), but Shiho subconsciously crawled on his thigh without any shame. This wasn't something a woman could do to a grown man she didn't know, or even a grown man she knew, and Gosho drew it on purpose. In chapter 1072, this is the first and only time Gosho positively describes Shiho's feelings for Shuichi. The real relationship between Shiho and Shuichi must be very close, trusting each other, and feeling comfortable with each other.

4. Shuichi's Revenge.

At that time, Shiho was already under his protection. So he could get his revenge when he reunited with Gin, this revenge doesn't only refers to Akemi but also Shiho. His revenge he couldn't do 2 years ago, because Shiho was still in the organization, if he acted then, Shiho would be in danger. Shuichi felt sorry for Shiho for not being able to protect her when she was in such a dangerous situation in her life. Because of his incompetence caused many tragedies to happen to Shiho such as her shrinking body, she was willing to be shot dead by Vermouth, and the death of her older sister. Even though Shuichi doesn't really love Akemi, she is still a precious sister to Shiho. Therefore, Shuichi thought of Akemi, and remembering her in his heart was a normal. This kind of feeling was not contradictory at all, just as Conan would try his best to protect Maori Ran while thinking of Ai. You can't say that Conan is a jerk just because he thinks of two people at the same time, but his love can only be given to one person.

Tomisato GC - Lightning Strikes

The Score: 93 (45-48) Handicap: 15.9

First round of 2023 in the books! If 2022 was the year of Ibaraki, 2023 may become the year of Chiba. Unfortunately if 2022 was the year of 90+, well, 2023 may also go the same way.

I bought a used rangefinder and had fun with it during this round. I’m still getting used to it but it’s a nice addition to my bag. The GPS distances are a bit inconsistent and reliant on battery life, so having the rangefinder ensures that I have the right distance every time I step up and hit it thin.

The Course

This was probably my second favorite course that we’ve played. The rough was straw-colored and the fairways were sea-green. It’s what I envisioned Chiba golf to look like. Unlike the Ibaraki courses, there were actual elevation changes. But while the layout played tricks on your eyes, never did anything seem unfair (no blind shots, no random small bunkers). It wasn’t actually a tough course, but it was one that rewarded good shots and punished bad ones.

By the way, my favorite so far is Miho GC.

The Company

Boss and assistant. No money on the line, but we all played like garbage. At least the weather was nice!

The Round

I lost 6 balls! Despite a fantastic range session last week where I was striping everything, I couldn’t hit a 3W to save my life. I know I’m close, but still I double-crossed everything left, and I didn’t trust myself to do what I worked on. I definitely deserved the bad score. And yet...

as can often be the case, it’s certain shots that keep you coming back. On hole 7 (we played the back nine first), I had 148 downhill for the tee shot on a par 3, and my 9i tracked toward the pin. I begged it to have enough legs, and it hit the front fringe, bounced forward, and rolled agonizingly toward the hole. I just missed the ace, but the 2 foot birdie was a great reward. And yet, it wasn’t even one of my best shots of the day...

Hole 8, 3rd shot, 2i

After my first birdie in forever, I hit a great drive on the par 5 8th but found tree trouble and had to punch out. Staring down 219 from the middle of the fairway, I hit the 2i of my life, which bounced just short of the green and rolled up to 2 feet to set up back-to-back birdies. While the 9i tee shot on 7 was pretty lucky due to a less-than-ideal strike, this shot was soooo satisfying. It’s the shot of the year and will be hard to beat. Honorable mention to my tee shot on the short par 4 15th, which was a 239 yard 2i to the middle of the fairway.

Hole 6, 4th shot, PW

After an OB tee shot, my 3rd off the tee was also left and stayed in bounds by mere feet. I was in the trees in a soft muddy lie, with no view of the green and a tree to clear. But lying 3, I went for it with a PW from 102, which ended up 10 feet from the flag. I was happy to have hit my line, and the distance ended up perfect. I missed the putt, however, and made double anyway.

I made my first par at 16 with a nice chip, but it was a stock up-and-down. On 17 my 7i approach went way right, leaving my short-sided up against a tree root. I hit and prayed, but I made solid contact and knocked it to 8 feet. I don’t think I could get it that close if I had 100 more tries. To make things better, I made the putt for back-to-back pars. Things were trending up! Well, not really, but those were 2 great up-and-downs.
