Sometime in November 2015...
SAN ANDRES XECUL
On Sunday, I rode a chicken bus (which was an old school bus repainted to be a public bus where everybody crams in), then a bus (which was an old van where everybody crams in) to get to this famously colorful church. Then I rode in the back of a truck (for 2 quetzales), and another chicken bus to get back home. This I did with my Spanish teacher, for I never would have had the guts otherwise.
Here’s what happened in between:
I witnessed a large mixture of Mayan culture and Spanish Catholic culture. As you can see, this Catholic church is painted bright bright yellow, which is very Mayan. On the church you can see different symbols painted on there representing nature and the universe (all this information was from my Spanish teacher).
We peaked at a baptism inside (the long candles with the circles around the edges are special baptism candles), and then strolled up a very unforgiving hill to see the chapel. I was told that for Holy Week, the church does a renactment of the Passion, so someone does indeed bear a cross up this hill along with a procession of people.
I had a hard enough time with just my purse.
But the faith, the perserverance… it was awe-inspriing.
Next to this chapel you will see a sacred Mayan prayer site, where a man had made a fire and is praying to the earth for good weather for crop (so I was told). Interestingly, there are crosses set up over the prayer site as to blend in the Catholic practice.
We strolled around the town a little more and I saw lots of corn… and materials for weaving the infamous Guatemalan textiles hanging up to dry.
Inside the tourist visitor center is a gift shop full of crafts made by locals and sold fairly. There’s lots of great information, as well as some damn good organic Guatemalan coffee Certainly worth the visit (and riding in the back of a truck) if you’re ever in Xela!
