jj x latinx/hispanic reader headcanon
as promised, im posting my first jj writing to celebrate 50 awesome followers!
a/n: this is my first time writing on tumblr. i never planned to, but everytime i watch outerbanks i notice how jj has a lil obsession with yucatan and saying stuff in spanish.
im kind of curious where that comes from and the idea of him dating someone hispanic/latinx popped into my head.
anyways, i just wanted to write this for all of the hispanic/latinx peeps. hope y’all can relate, im mexican sooo some of it is based off of my life, but I also include stuff that can apply to all hispanic/latinx cultures.
i hope you like it!
- watching spanish films or novelas, especially the black and white classics
- of course you would put on subtitles for jj, but he’s picked up some words from listening to you speak spanish ( or in a certain dialect or indigenous language)
- sometimes he would just admire you being so focused on the film and watch you occasionally quote the next scene under your breath, since you remember watching those films and shows growing up
- celebrating traditional holidays together with your family
- you and him going over to your parents house to celebrate el dia de los reyes with the traditional bread
- you explained to jj that there were baby figurines hidden in the bread and whoever gets one, then they make the tamales for christmas
- a few seconds into munching on the bread and JJ realized he got it after biting on the hard, white plastic. everyone cheered and laughed at the poor boy with big eyes staring at the little baby figurine
- “ i can barely make a sandwich “
- “don’t worry i’ll teach you baby”
- the day before Christmas Eve, jj and you helped make tamales with your mom. your mom put you and jj to knead la masa. there would be a few moments where jj would intertwined his fingers with yours, which made you blush.
- but, you slapped his hand away signaling him to get back to work because your mom has a strict schedule when it comes to the food
- him being mind blown from tasting tamales and your mom giving him plate after plate
- visiting family
- your tias would be all over him and your tios and primos would tease him and call him el gringo
- but over time they all warmed up to him and he’s always welcome to family events.
- you would invite him over whenever there was a get together for soccer games and boxing matches on tv
- playing la lotería with your family
- one night he was reading the cards out loud
- but there would be little giggles from everyone when he pronounced something wrong or it would just sound funny when he said them
- “el árbol, wey” your tio yelled after jj’s numerous failed attempts to pronounce it correctly
- “el árbol wey” jj repeated
- everyone bursted out laughing
- he makes an effort to learn and speak spanish with family members
- but sometimes he would look at you if he needs help finishing a sentence
- one time you left him alone with your tias and you remember looking at him, who looked terrified at not knowing what to say or what they were saying
- “never leave me alone”
- “don’t worry, i’ll get you a spanish dictionary next time to keep you company”
- you teaching him the cuss words in spanish
- he would legit argue with anyone that gave you a bad look when you talked in spanish
- although jj is not much of a church boy, he makes an effort to clean up nice and go to service with your family and you.
- which only makes his parents love him more
- introducing him to spanish rock
- caifanes
- los enanitos verdes
- los bunkers
- juanes
- inspector
- division minúscula
(those are just some of my favs)
- him admiring you by the doorway as you dance around in the kitchen listening to bad bunny in one of his shirts
- at some big family parties of yours, there would be mariachi or some singing group. everyone joins in and goes wild with el grito
- jj spent a week trying to do el grito
- taking care of him when he’s sick
- which includes massaging his chest with vapor rub. making him your moms caldo de pollo with pieces of tortilla in it.
- “ i told you not to go to sleep with your hair wet after surfing”
- him groaning into his pillow, because you’ve been scolding him all day and would yell at him to put on socks
- saying sana sana colitia de rana when he got hurt
- nicknames you call him: bebe, amor, huerito, cariño
- he loves your breakfasts
- him waking up to the smell of whatever you’re cooking made him the happiest. you would cook him huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, sopes, huevos a la mexicana, tortas and etc. (or any of your favorites, these are just my personal faves)
- you would pack him a torta in his lunch bag you made for work
- he loves it when you both cook and you teach him all of the family recipes you loved growing up
- making him chips con salsa or guacamole, chocolate de abuelita, or giving him pan dulce as comfort food when he has a bad day
- when he stays at your house he has a hard time finding the butter you asked him for, because each one turns out to be either salsa or beans
- taking him with you on your trip to (insert your family’s country) to visit family
- surprising him with tickets to yucatan on his 18th
- before the trip, he would go on and on about you two buying a house in mexico and having a fish shack and surfing til the sun sets
- he would try to sneak in tequila into the US
- you and jj have known eachother for years, so when your quince came up, you asked him to be your main chambelan. this was before y’all started dating
- jj would play around in practice and there were times you let your nerves get the best of you and went off on him
- but when it did come down to your big day, jj made sure you felt like the most special person in the world and that there was no trouble that night
- that night, especially during the waltz, he knew he wanted to be the one to make you feel like most special person all the time.
- you would be a part of a ballet folklorico group that did occasional performances at the local theater
- jj would be so supportive and even stay at your practices to watch, since he was your ride
- at the chateau before performances or just if you need more practice, he helps out with choreography
- you would even catch him subtly do a carretilla or a zapateado during the day
- he would bring flowers or your favorite snack to your show
- he would cheer from the crowd and be the loudest
- jj loved seeing you dressed in the traditional clothing, while dancing your heart out. he loved that you’re so in touch with your culture and you let him into that part of your world
- he would massage your head, since the tight bun and that one annoying bobby pin stabbing your scalp did some damage
- teaching him how to dance cumbia, bachata, zapatear and etc.
- growing up jj loved going to your bday parties because of the piñata
- he was definitely the kind to throw himself on top of the candy and try to get one of the loose cones to use as a bag
- whenever trump got elected, jj got you a trump pinata and handed you a baseball bat
- “let him feel your wrath babe”
- you are a part of an after school club that helps indigenous communities in hispanic/latinx countries
- jj would be supportive and get you coffee for those long nights when you were planning a fundraiser or doing research
- he would even attend the meeting or go to the fundraisers you helped planned
- he would wear a threaded bracelet with his name on it, which you got from a lady who made and sold them on the street a long time ago from visiting your family’s homeland. since then he never took it off, even though it looks a little worn down
| also i want to tag some amazing people who have given me the confidence to post:

Café de Olla, Traditions from Mexico
OMG! When I found this place on Yelp, I knew we had to go! I went to the same café earlier this year in Puerto Vallarta so I knew it was a sign! Café de Olla is a rare find for me as it has to be made in a very specific way...it's all about the clay pot and canela (see photos below) Café de Olla brings me the best childhood memories visiting my abuelitos in San Marcos, Durango <3 I love that it's naturally sweetened!
OK, now to my review of this lovely spot....
Greetings from Burbank, CA...
This place was the nicest, quaint restaurant with friendly service...the food was amazing, their specialty is chilaquiles so that's what I had and YUMMY, they hit the spot!! On to the coffee.....WOW!! So the Café de Olla was so tasty, I had 3 cups LoL It was very hot (suegro would approve) and the natural sweetener, canela completed my morning!!
Next up, the location....I truly enjoyed their use of space...they had a cute painting of the Café and a wall full of inspiring quotes...Be someone's reason to smile was my fave :)
I'm looking forward to coming back here!! Oh, also on the plus side- they serve breakfast all day!! Get you some, my pretties!! Xoxo....

Lemony Lentil Soup
“Great twist on a basic lentil soup. Perfect seasoning, rich and delicious flavor. Being quick and easy to make is just a bonus! Thanks for a terrific recipe.” ~Betsy
Roasted Cauliflower Enchiladas
“Omg, these were AMAZING! We used lentils instead of black beans and there were zero leftovers. Our family devoured them. ;)” ~Emily
Cold Sesame Peanut Noodles
“I read your post last night and made the recipe this morning! Followed the basic recipe, used a food processor to shred up the veggies and had crunchy peanut butter on hand for in the sauce, which is so delicious. Sriracha and fresh lime on the side. Next time I’d like to get creative with your ways to change up the recipe. This is so good I will likely eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner until it is gone! Thank you!” ~Lora
The BEST Black Bean Chili
“I try a lot of blog recipes and am usually not impressed. This one was an absolute winner! Used the crockpot instructions. I did soak my beans overnight before putting into the crockpot. For Trader Joe’s shoppers, I found the Salsa Verde, Roasted Red Peppers, and Fire Roasted tomatoes there. It was my secret vegan dinner for the week. How long do I have to wait until I can make it again?” ~Misty
Creamy Rosé Pasta with Roasted Tomatoes
“I made this recipe and it was super easy and FANTASTIC. Every one of the picky roommates could eat it! So good.” ~Vi
Mushroom Stroganoff
“This is everything I didn’t know I needed in my life! Beef stroganoff was one of my favourite meals from my mom growing up but finding a good vegetarian alternative has been difficult. This version was easy to make, packs full of flavour, and the perfect comfort meal. Thank you!” ~Jackie
Roasted Cauliflower, Chickpea and Arugula Salad
“OK made this, loved it soooo much!!! That roasted cauliflower and roasted chick peas were the best thing ever!! I made it for my husband and myself for dinner last night, had a sandwich baggie of the cauliflower and chickpeas and pine nuts left over, and just now stood at the sink and ate those for lunch. Seriously, the best! Shared the recipe with two of my friends this morning and told them they have to make it. Make it, I tell you make it, you will love it!!” ~Jayne
Quinoa Tortilla Soup
“So much easier than I was expecting! Since discovering, I’ve made this recipe several times, including for a few potlucks and it always gets rave reviews! So delicious! Thanks for sharing.” ~Nettie
Curried Satay Veggie Bowls
“I made this last night and was very impressed! I assumed it would be good, but I was not prepared for just how delicious it would be. It will definitely become a regular meal in our home. Thank you!” ~Kara
Chai Butternut Squash Soup
“Wow! A soup so good my four year old son is devouring it! I could have eaten the whole pot tonight. A new family favorite!” ~Valerie
Cacio e Pepe
“I’ve made other cacio e pepe recipes before, but this one was the absolute best. Such a simple meal, but SO flavorful. Thanks for posting this after your IG story, Ali!” ~Leah
Roasted Cauliflower and Black Bean Tacos
“That was excellent, just made it tonight, it was wonderful. Bonus: I made more of that delicious sauce, so can put it with chickpeas later this week, and have more refried beans so halfway to more tacos or burrito bowls. Thanks!” ~Maria
Portobello Pot Roast
“As soon as this hit my email I started craving it. Had it for dinner tonight and it was sooo good! My husband had 3 bowls. Can’t wait for my lunch leftovers tomorrow.” ~Alaina
The BEST Fried Rice
“I feel like I cannot overstate how much I love this recipe. I have made it five times now and even with creative variations it still turnes out amazing! I probably annoy my firends with with how often I’m preaching the virtues of the amazing fried rice I found on Pinterest.” ~Christopher
Cajun Corn Chowder
“Made this last night to enjoy for lunch today. SO GOOD. Made it exactly as written and added some Crystal hot sauce as a “garnish” to take the heat up a notch. I can’t believe it’s vegan! Thanks a million for the great recipe. Love this site.” ~Maura
The Best (and Easiest!) Migas Recipe
“I LOVE Migas! Yes, they are perfect for leftover tortillas or chips. I usually wind up making them very much like this when I have leftover fried corn tortillas from chilaquiles. SO good for the next day. This is great!” ~Mike
Herb-Lovers Lemony Orzo Salad
“I made this tonight, and it was so fresh and amazing. There’s lots of room for improvising and adding veggies and herbs you love.” ~Caroline
Pasta with Caramelized Sweet Potatoes and Kale
“We made this last night and it was 🌟🌟🌟. Thanks for another great recipe!” ~Kelsey
Easy Thai Curry Hot Pot
“This looks amazing! Also, way less complicated than I thought hot pot recipes would be. Can’t wait to try it with my girlfriends!” ~Michelle
Authentic Gazpacho
“Made this on Sunday and it was amazing! We were actually in Portugal recently and I had gazpacho for the first time and immediately wanted to remake it back home, then literally the next day you posted the recipe! Travel Guide: San Diego
This time last week I decided we were getting the heck out of LA for President's Day because... sun. Pursuing the sun led Andy and I to one of our favorite SoCal spots: San Diego! San Diego holds a special place in my heart because it's one of the first places Andy and I ever adventured when we got together 4+ years ago. There's a ton to see and do in SD, so I rounded up all my faves from this trip + our past few trips for my San Diego travel guide. Keep on reading for our favorite places to eat, things to see, and fun activities plus a 3 day travel plan for any weekend getaway.
If you're planning to venture from LA to SD, plan for at least a 3 hour drive because of traffic and potential pit-stops. To break up the drive we usually stop in Costa Mesa at The Camp to grab a bite to eat, stretch our legs, and do some shopping. This past weekend our time in San Diego looked something like this:
Day 1
We arrived on Saturday exactly at check-in time and made our way to The Pendry which is one of the newest hotels in San Diego's Gaslamp District. It is by far one of my favorite hotels I've EVER stayed in. (hotel diary coming next week!) Upon checking-in we were greeted with a welcome cocktail and my first thought was "they get me!" After settling into our gorgeous room we enjoyed a glass of wine at the bar downstairs and then ventured out to explore the East Village and Gaslamp areas.
 Around the corner from the hotel I discovered my favorite burger spot from previous visits: Neighborhood. Naturally, we ate all the things (see menu advice down below under eats + drinks). I was a little bummed we planned the trip so last minute because Neighborhood also has a secret speakeasy bar called Noble Experiment that requires reservations typically within 2-3 days in advance. Next time though!
In typical Andy and Ashley fashion we totally passed out after dinner and didn't make it to the hotel club that we really wanted to check out. This is 30 you guys... staying up past 10pm is ROUGH.
Day 2
The good thing about being old (I kid, I kid) is that if you go to bed before 10pm you're up with the sun! We woke up earlier, or at least I did, and enjoyed a lazy morning at the hotel's restaurant -marketplace; they serve Vittoria coffee! After getting dressed we walked over to The Mission for breakfast. One of the best parts about staying in the Gaslamp district is that everything is walkable and if you don't want to walk they now have public bike rentals that you can take to and fro.  We were going to bike to Balboa Park for an afternoon excursion but it was a little chilly, so we opted to drive. Parking around the park is free - yay!
 I've always heard of Balboa Park but never realized everything that it has: museum after museum, gardens, street performers, carousel... all. the. things. We could've spent hours on hours there but didn't want to cough up the $15 for every museum - oops.  Walking around the gardens and grounds was amazing enough to warrant a trip, so I definitely suggest visiting if you're in San Diego. After Balboa Park we ventured to North Park which I would describe as the Venice of San Deigo; think very cool, hipster vibes. You know: cute overpriced coffee spots, succulent stores, and record shops aka totally Andy and my vibe! I DIED when we walked passed the store Pigment - I feel like the website doesn't do the physical shop justice. It's like the cutest stationary shop meets a succulent garden meets Target's home section meets every colorful gift you've ever wanted to buy. Not sure how else to explain it but you MUST go if you are in North Park. Another really cool store in the area is Aloha Beach Club - it's more for guys but I love the whole vibe they are throwing out.
Naturally after all the adventuring and shopping we were hungry which brought us to Harvest which was back near our hotel. The Gaslamp district food options are pretty indulgent (burgers, beer, fries, pizza, more beer) and Harvest is probably the healthiest thing in the area. Don't worry, it's not like we were trying to have healthy meals for the rest of the trip because for dinner that night we went to the Old Spaghetti Factory. Yes, it's a chain and I crave it like no other. There aren't any in Los Angeles which means whenever I'm near one I have to have it, and, I mean, this was walking distance from our hotel. If you're not into the OSF idea (why would you be?) then I suggest going to Basic Pizza. I've been a few times on other trips and their pizza and beer do not disappoint.
Had we not eaten our weight in spaghetti and fallen asleep quickly after,  we would've gone to another great speakeasy called Prohibition. For this one you don't need a reservation, you just have to know where it is!
Day 3
On our third day we had amazing sunshine (that was the whole purpose of the trip!) and we pretty much went to the Pendry pool at 10:00am before packing up and heading home around 2pm. On our way home we stopped at Windansea Beach which is one of my favorite beaches up near La Jolla. I personally would suggest staying out of the main La Jolla area because it is SO packed and getting in and out is pretty nuts, but you do you!
Keep scrolling to see pics from our trip, specific menu favs, and some other spots we didn't hit on this trip but that I really love.
{balboa park}
{aloha beach club}
{provisional @ the pendry}
{windansea beach}
{aloha beach club}
{harvest}
{pendry poolside bloody mary}
{pigment store}
{eat + drink}
The Baked Bear - stop there on your way to Windansea beach and get any of their delicious ice cream sandwiches
Neighborhood -  local burger spot with a great beer selection. Get the hood burger and jalepeno mac 'n cheese
Basic - yummy pizza spot (the pizzas are HUGE) that's super central to downtown San Diego Harvest - a healthy food gem in the middle of a rather indulgent downtown San Diego landscape The Mission - Mexican breakfast joint. Get the chilaquiles. Really you should always get chilaquiles if they are on any menu! Prohibition - no reservation needed speakeasy Noble Experiment - speakeasy in Neighborhood that requires 2 -3 day ahead resies
{play}
Windansea Beach: gorgeous somewhat secluded beach - it's getting more popular!
Pendry Hotel - luxury meets boutique hipster hotel vibes. 6 places to eat + drink plus an amazing rooftop pool scene
Balboa Park - huge park with museums, bikes, theatres, and gardens. Definitely a must visit even if it's just to walk the grounds.
Pigment - the coolest boutique with succulents, candles, and gifting items in North Park Sunset Cliffs - holy stunning beach overlook! As noted in the name you should definitely go at sunset because the view in unreal.
