The Old Oak (2023) Review
The Old Oak is the last pub standing and one of the only remaining public spaces that people can meet, a once thriving mining community has fallen on very hard times after 30 years of a decline. The arrival of Syrian refugees placed within the village create a fight for territory with some of the locals. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Continue reading The Old Oak (2023) Review

OC Songs (well, not really, but close enough)
@furbyq tagged me (thank you!) and since I don't really have OCs other than my sims that aren't based on characters, she suggested I do it for my Deception IV character playlists! I'll be doing ship songs as well.
Much of my vision of the game's characters are my own, as the plots (there are two, Laegrinna's and Velguirie's stories) are secondary and considered forgettable, which is a shame because I found them as enjoyable as the gameplay. The way I've developed their personalities probably makes no sense to the few other fans and would be considered wildly out-of-character, but tbh I don't give a shit because it brings me joy, and with no fandom, there's no drama. (Hopefully).
Characters:
Ice Queen by Within Temptation: this has always been my favorite song by them but I came to associate it with Laegrinna. She is ruthless and cold for the most part canonically, however I think there's more to her than that and I'll get to that later.
Queen of the Night by Whitney Houston: This is, without a doubt, Velguirie's theme song. "I've got more than enough to make you drop to your knees," "They say I'm trouble and I don't give a damn," the lyrics pretty much speak for themselves. They don't call her the Nightmare Princess for nothing.
Shine On Me by Chris Dane Owens: This sounds like a hero's theme song and Zeno Shin is a self-proclaimed hero and big dumb idiot. Also, if you know me you're likely aware Laegrinna/Zeno is my OTP and it evokes the way I imagine him being awestruck by her. She is the Dark Side Princess but she is his light.
Who's That Girl by Madonna - Okay, so hear me out. Whereas Velguirie is entirely fire and I love her for that, Laegrinna is ice AND fire. You don't see that often because while she uses it to her advantage, she won't admit it. Kind of related to the last song it's about falling under the inescapable spell of a captivating woman. Which again is how I envision her effect on Zeno but may or may not also be something more personal.
Ships:
Latch by Disclosure ft Sam Smith: This has been one of my favorite songs since it came out well before I played Deception IV, but now in my mind it's about how Laegrinna and Zeno are drawn to each other and the metaphors are right on for a game where the main goal is using traps on enemies. (Zeno is a major enemy, by the way. You defeat him, which means yes, Laegrinna canonically kills him. But that's what AUs are for, and I'm a sucker for enemies-to-lovers).
Sleeping Dogs by Merril Bainbridge: A song I've known since high school, holy shit that was 25+ years ago now?? 💀 Another one full of metaphors - Laegrinna and Zeno drive each other crazy, but they DRIVE EACH OTHER CRAZY. Somehow, even though I always thought I hated the tsundere trope, it suits Laegrinna in my head. She doesn't want to be attracted to him but she can't resist him.
Shadows of the Night by Pat Benatar: Although I don't think they meet in canon because Evelyn is from Laegrinna's story and I didn't get very far in quest mode (I watched my husband finish it but that was forever ago) I think Velguirie and Evelyn are perfect for each other. "Surrender all your dreams to me tonight" is the line that hit me, like I said Velguirie is the Nightmare Princess, and I'm not going into detail but let's just say Evelyn is quite keen on surrendering 😂 I haven't thought of any other songs for them yet but I hope to, they're a really fun pairing and I love them.
Okay, I've seen a lot of people tagged or participated already but I'll tag @kaylynn-langerak, @celestialspritz, @h0nkytonkangels, and @esotheria-sims.
#tag game#deception shitposting#well not really a shitpost but there's maybe 1 or 2 other fans on tumblr so I need to put it in a personal tag#laegrinna x zeno#velguirie x evelyn

White-necked Jacobin Hummingbird by Chris Bainbridge Via Flickr: Not quite sure where the name comes from, but the Jacobins were the most radical and ruthless of the political groups formed in the wake of the French Revolution, and in association with Robespierre they instituted the Terror of 1793–4. They often wore blue ex-military coats - maybe from there? :-) Taken in Costa Rica (at Rancho Naturalista). You don't want to know how many out of focus shots of these birds I took to get one half decent one.

Kindred of London 5/6 : clan Gangrel, clan Ravnos, clan Tremere
The General, former Sheriff, Joachim's Sire, and the only person with Cyril Masters who has the slight interest in keeping the Masquerade in place apparently thank you General
Joachim, The General's Childe, one of the two Sheriffs of London along with Juliet, can turn into a wolf, has a keen interest in Adonis
we only met Dhita very briefly at the opera then we were too busy being attacked by a mummy to talk w her
Farid is Faye's husband, currently teaching Chimerstry to Arzel
Bainbridge, Tremere Primogen, whom everyone in town wants dead, for good reasons
Cole, whom we're trying so hard to make join our coterie but he keeps getting kidnapped
_
Canon NPCs' designs inspired by the London by Night book, clan design based on Chris Leland‘s designs
_
Arzel's opinion under the cut
The General : he seems trustworthy as far as kindred can be trustworthy, he's concerned with the Masquerade and keeping the city calm enough for business to prosper, which makes him a good ally
Joachim : on a very personal level, he likes him, he's the kind of man Arzel would've tried to befriend when he was human. Tho Arzel is a little jealous to have found someone with more strength than himself. On a professional level he thinks Joachim is a little too careless and it annoys him from a Sheriff
Dhita Choudhair : no real opinion yet, they just crossed paths
Farid : he likes him. A lot. He's smart, he's quiet but funny, cultured, and he cares very much for Faye. Arzel is deeply envious of what they have.
Bainbridge : no class, no swag, thinks he's better than everyone, not as powerful as he thinks, no respect for ladies, and he thinks its sooo cool to drink tea in public, as if people didn't know he's going to need to throw that up later in private. Arzel doesn't want him dead per say but if he dies it would improve the city's life quality greatly
Cole : Bainbridge's intern, who should definitely find a better job. Arzel thinks he's rather young/inexperienced, but it's obvious that he's trying harder than he should to get recognition and doesn't get any. He is prickly but Arzel still wants to try and help him as much as he can

Number 6 was a Plant: It's Your Funeral
The introduction to this series of posts considering the theory that Number 6 didn't really resign and is a 'plant' in the Village may be read here: https://www.tumblr.com/culttvblog/738540162388213760/number-6-was-a-plant-introduction
I bet you all thought I couldn't manage to twist It's Your Funeral round to the plant idea didn't you? I wasn't that sure I could, actually but think I've found a way of doing it. To be honest it didn't really help that the plot of this one is a bit of a mess: I mean, Number 6 is manipulated so that he has to save Number 2 from an assassination plot which may or may not be fake, for the sake of everyone else? Come on, this is getting out of hand.
Apparently Derren Nesbitt said in an interview that when he was making this he had literally no idea of what was going on. Annette Andre commented that Patrick McGoohan was unbelievably difficult about everything (king) and from memory I think this might have been the one where he unceremoniously sacked the director in the middle of production.
Anyway it's not that apparent what's going on but I suspect that's the point.
I am interested that the title is 'it's your funeral,' which is proverbially said to someone considering some unwise course of action and indicating that they will have to live with the consequences. The point, of course, being that Number 6 is determined that it isn't going to be his funeral or anyone else's, and it seems like he's the only person who will.
I have tended in this series of posts to the view that Number 6 probably appeared to resign of his own initiative and so part of what he has discovered is the true nature of the business he has been involved in. If his being planted had been initiated by his superiors he would have some back-up, but instead has found that they're all in on it. He has planted himself in the Village he has heard about, possibly because of concerns he had heard about it, and has had all his illusions shattered one after the other. I have been tending to see the things he has learned as being revelations about the work place, which is of course of more moment than many jobs, in the case of the Villagers.
It is not contradicting his self-imposed plant status at all, therefore, to see that in this episode he has learned something else utterly shattering about his previous trade. This is that horrifying workplace realisation that you are the only sensible person there, and are therefore obliged to do something to stop some disaster happening. The show so often follows the intelligence community's script so closely, that the people who hold certain knowledge are too valuable to be let loose and must be contained. This episode turns it round so that the entire intelligence community are a set of cabbages, with petty politicking, anything for a quiet life, some staggering incompetence and irresponsibility, and so on.
Number 6 can only be a plant, because he's the only sensible one there at the Mad Hatter's Tea Party.
Another interesting perspective on this episode can be found in the Free for All Podcast (https://podcastaddict.com/podcast/free-for-all/3737640) where Cai Ross and Chris Bainbridge have some very interesting things to say about the technology used and particularly comparing the activity prognosis to contemporary social media algorithms.
I am predicting from this point on that the episodes will become increasingly difficult to manipulate to fit the plant theory, purely because while I love the theory and think it's a convincing explanation of what is happening, I honestly don't think it was probably in the mind of anyone writing the show! I may therefore change to covering a couple of episodes in a blog post but will still continue to the bitter end.

2022 Reading Log pt 9

41. Curious Creatures on our Shores by Chris Thorogood. They’re not on my shores, which is why I picked this up from the library. This is a British book about animals of tidepools and beaches, with each getting an original oil painting. The book is very pretty, but very slight, at 127 pages, which includes full page illustrations and the least useful indices I’ve ever seen (alphabetical lists of animal names, but no page numbers or connections between the scientific and common names!). The text is mostly to do with recognizing the animals and where to find them, with the biology being covered at a fairly superficial level. Pleasant enough, but forgettable. The only thing that will stick with me is learning that England calls their ecological equivalent to the sand dollar (short-spined sea urchin that burrows in sand) a sea potato. Cute.

42. Paleontology: An Illustrated History by David Bainbridge. I found this book remarkably frustrating. It posits itself as a chronological look at paleontology through art and diagrams, much like the same author’s How Zoologists Organize Things. Only the art isn’t in chronological order. It often, without calling attention to it, contrasts an outdated reconstruction with a modern one, or uses a modern reconstruction when talking about an older find. It also has a very weird sense of what is and isn’t scientific consensus, positing ideas that are well founded as “probably” or “speculatively” (ex: mosasaurs as lizards), and hypotheses that aren’t fully accepted as if they were fact (ex: the nature of the Tully Monster). And it just plain doesn’t get pterosaurs, referring to well known genera as “enigmatic”, the group as a whole as “fragile”, and showing outdated reconstructions without commenting on them being not accepted (ex: Padian’s bipedal Dimorphodon). The book has some pretty diagrams and art in it, but the text is a wash as far as actual science.

43. The Comics Go to Hell by Fredrik Strömberg. This is a pocket-sized little book showing the Devil, Hell and similar themes as they appear in comics. The text is organized into themes such as “the family of evil”, showing mythological figures that influenced the Devil or were influenced by him, or “selling your soul”, about Faustian bargains. Each two page spread has a panel or set of panels on the left, and expository text on the right. The author’s span is global, although “global” in this case mostly means the USA, Europe and Japan. Because of the size of the book, some of the panels aren’t reproduced in a very legible way, which is a bit frustrating. I had a good time with it, but “time” meant “45 minutes”, and it’s not one I see myself revisiting. Good thing I got it at a library.

44. Supernatural Cities: Enchantment, Anxiety and Spectrality edited by Karl Bell. This is an academic anthology collecting essays about magic, monsters and folklore and how they intersect with cities. The introductory essay argues that the expansiveness and anonymity of a city provides the scaffolding for various supernatural beliefs, both alienating and frightening (monsters, ghosts) and empowering (faith, play). The essays within vary in length and quality, as is usual for these collections, but none are what I’d call weak. Some of the highlights for me include a discussion of urban South Africa’s mixed relationship with consumer goods as seen through the lens of benefactors-with-strings-attached both supernatural (mamlambos, a type of water spirit) and mundane (“blessers”, or sugar daddies); a reappraisal of H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Horror of Red Hook” within the context of his writing beyond “racist even for Lovecraft”; a look at Parisian witches of the 19th century; and a psychological analysis of the Maryland Goatman as a manifestation of anxieties about Washington DC expanding into rural counties.

45. Angelology: An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Celestial Superheroes by Angemi Rabiolo, illustrations by Iris Biasio. This is a weird one. Based on the title, back cover blurb and art style, I thought it was going to be a compendium of angels’ names and powers from an agnostic or folkloric perspective, albeit with a pop art spin. However, the author is a true believer, and one with a very esoteric take on Christian mythology and cosmology that I have seen nowhere else. It’s clearly inspired by the hierarchy of Pseudo-Dionysus (that’s the nine choirs), Kabbalistic literature, the Book of Enoch and the Gospel of Bartholomew, but beholden to none of them entirely and mixing and matching as it sees fit. The book includes recommendations for prayer and meditation devoted to particular angels for particular problems (akin to the traditional Catholic venerating of saints), but in places seems embittered towards the Catholic Church (for declaring Uriel a demon, and for abandoning Joan of Arc, for example).
