Bliss, on a b-b-b-bittery winter night in Melbourne, is a soirée, (anothery just like the many lovely otheries) in the warmenthralling belowdecks embrace of our Christine. Tonight, iconic French fragrance maison (est. 1643, hell-O) Trudon, chose Mrs Barro's boutique to premier its five Haute de Parfums Trudon. (Not your average, let me tell you.) The awfully handsome and freshfromFrance Julien Pruvost, Directeur Creative de la Maison Cire Trudon, did the honors, telling the oddball conception fairytales of the 5 extraordinary - genderless - scents composed by three artisan perfumers in separate sensory theatres conjured to evoke Royalty, Religion and Revolution. (You had to be there.) I'm fresh out of superlatives for tonight's Melbourne Fashion Week opening Gala Dinner with collection salons by localboymadegood Martin Grant. The "designers from Dark Mofo" I was told, conjured the night (and, I don't use "conjured" lightly), of wintry mists and fallen leaves, silken blossom trees speckled with light, and softlit bowls and columns of frozen roses and fresh magnolias on tables glinting with silver and cut crystal. With every exquisite course and cocktail, the "seasons" changed with dusky dawn to day bright light and projected skies. The trees around us blossomed, the ice-trapped flowers gradually melted, the night's end arrived in a shower of perfumed rose petals then tapered to an aftersoiree of extreme elegance. A Night to Remember of - let's call it for what it is - breathtaking beauty. It's yonks since I last passed through Flinders Lane's iconic lipstick-red door, down down into the deliciously decadent kingdom of Christine. (Well, a month or few anyway.) I broke the drought today for one of her famously elegant workshops; always a hoot, lovely revelations, lots of laughs. Gavin Sommer of Agency De Parfum lead this one: the secrets of Cire Trudon scents and scented candles. And frankly, who knew there was so much to know? Wicks, FYI, are wildly different, scents only waft for three hours before you're wasting wax (extinguish, wait for wax to harden, relight, and you're off again!). And Marie Antoinette - what a queen - demanded Cire Trudon's Black Jade scent to comfort her route to the guillotine. As you do. Post workshop, we sniffed the candle cloches and fanned out to inspect The fashion legend's latest treasures including a cracklingly fine jewellery collection by New York designer Nora Kogan called "Winter Roses"; delicately wrought gold and silver pieces with measured pings of drama and semi-precious sparkle.
