sometimes it's just nice to see clean lines and well-made classic garments, with little in the way of kazoos or sparklers to distract from the fact that maybe the clothes aren't so well-made after all.  christopher strong's minimalist spring 2011 collection, presented at south african fashion week, was little more than ladylike, sophisticated clothes, no fuss and all substance. 

largely offered in neutral shades--black, white, beige, navy, and eggshell--accented with teal as the statement colour, there were hints of a vintage clothing affinity (indeed, on his bio page, the designer states he is "(i)nspired by vintage, the juxtaposition of shapes and fabrics and how these come together in modern, wearable ways") with more than a few nods to the 1950s throughout. 

in all, the range made for a complete wardrobe--perhaps a little heavy on the dresses, but with plenty of separates, nevertheless--and spoke to the counterculture 'slow fashion' movements that have been stirring some time of late.  indeed, if we don't have so much money to refill our wardrobes, shouldn't investment pieces make sense?  and shouldn't they anyway?  after all, if one of the hallmarks of designer clothing is the quality, why should be buy pieces that only last a season?  why not simply purchase them at h&m?  although there are many circumstances and motivations that lead to different lifestyles, it is, in the face of so many flash trends, a relief to see some designers getting back to basic things we'll need and love forever--and remembering, that in some ways, this is what designer fashion is supposed to be about.
