“Hey, little buddy.” Buck can’t help the wet laugh that escapes him; the nickname, the tone, hearing it after so long, “This is a surprise.” And Buck can tell, despite all his worries, all the fears choking him right then, it’s not a bad surprise.

“Danny,” he can’t avoid the sob that crawls out of his mouth, all his strength leaving him in light of who is on the other end of the line, “Maddie needs us.” There’s a soft thump down the line, then a muffled curse, before Buck hears shuffling.

“Ali, hey, what’s up?” He hasn’t heard from her since she left LA right after breaking-up with him. He had known it was coming from the day he’d been released from the hospital, he supposes if he’s thankful for anything it’s that she at least waited until he could work out how to mostly cope on his own before she split.

“Can you come to Cedars Sinai?” There’s nothing else in the call, Ali sounding tired but not scared or hurt.

“Are you okay?” He’s already turning towards the stairs to jog down them, ignoring the mild twinge in his leg as he picks up speed. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

--- Following the arbitration meeting, Ali drops a bombshell in Buck's lap. Now he has to navigate the future with no job, no support and a newborn baby.

It's just as well he's got more friends and family than he realised.
