Elio Ciol
He began working in his father's workshop at a very young age, acquiring technical experience and developing a personal way of expressing himself through photography, especially landscape photography. He was always looking for new expressive possibilities. From 1955 to 1960 he was active in the photographic circle "La Gondola" in Venice. In 1962 he participated as a stage photographer in the film Gli Ultimi by Vito Pandolfi and Father David Maria Turoldo. The following year, 1963, in Milan, he collaborated with Luigi Crocenzi on the realization of the Arnaldo and Fernando Altimani Foundation for the study and language of images.
Ciol’s work is part of the Neorealism movement in photography; a predisposition towards everyday life of ordinary people, depicted to induce social and political transformation. His focus as a documentary photographer started with the rural world, shifting to emigration (with a focus on the railway station) and finally to the life of children. His images are never aggressive – no display of grief, no insistent showing of suffering or death, not disturbing to look at – but rather, joyful in nature.
