Main Story S2 Chapter 2-12: Whenever I'm Lost (每當徬徨時) | Light and Night 光與夜之戀
S2 Chapter 2-09
♡———♡
The day after the sample garment review meeting, the company sent an email announcing that the Pristine Time Travel series had passed the brand compatibility assessment.
My next task, as promised to Evan and the company, was to maximize the series' visibility before its official launch.
The Pristine team was experienced in promoting unique fabrics, and with Hao Shuai leading the charge, I didn't need to invest much effort in that aspect.
The real challenge was breaking down stereotypes surrounding traditional clothing and transforming it into something "wearable in everyday life."
We launched a vintage hairstyle imitation challenge on social media. We commissioned video bloggers to film vlogs featuring traditional clothing. We invited people from all walks of life to participate in "time travel" photoshoots.
I was constantly surrounded by several phones, juggling calls and appointments.
You: Thank you for accepting our invitation, professor. I've read your paper on ancient clothing research.
.
You: Give me a hairstyle too... Haha, actually, no, maybe not. I've been pulling all-nighters, and I barely have any hair left.
.
You: Could you hold on a moment, professor? I have another call coming in... Hello, An An? Did those bloggers agree to it?
.
You: Let me see... riding a motorcycle at night in a Ruqun? No, no, no need to change. I'll find someone to lend her an even cooler bike.
.
In the brief pauses between calls, I saw my colleagues taking photos as well.
There was the auntie wrapping dumplings in modified traditional attire, the students in class, the programmer in front of their computer...
The "Time Travel" hashtag they created was steadily climbing the trending topics list.
This series of promotions sparked widespread discussion of modernized traditional clothing on social media. However, based on the data, the number of people consistently engaging with the content hadn't expanded significantly.
I decided to take it a step further and organize a popup event, inviting passersby to try on the Time Travel collection.
Speaking of popup events, I remembered that Jesse often participated in them during his musical's promotional period.
Flipping through photos from back then, I noticed how those emerald green eyes always seemed to find my camera lens, and the smile he gave wasn't the actor Jesse's, but Tangyuan's.
He truly is a top-tier idol, I thought. Just looking at him was energizing. I rubbed my face and continued reviewing the supplies needed for the event.
-
The day of the popup event arrived. The sky was overcast, and the air was stiflingly hot.
Li Manman: Hello, this is a popup event for our new Pristine "Time Travel" collection. Would you like to take a look?
Mao Ge: Hi there, interested in checking out our event? You can try on the clothes for free.
Passerby A: Those are for young girls. We're too old to wear that kind of thing.
Passerby B: They look nice, but they're more suited for pretty young ladies. Not for me.
Passerby C: Is there a fee to participate in this activity? I'm not buying if it's too expensive.
Unlike the online buzz, only a handful of people in real life were willing to participate in our event.
To make matters worse, even though Huanhuo cloth was light, breathable, and not prone to trapping sweat, the mere act of taking the clothes on and off in this weather was unbearable.
In the end, even those few people, half of them left with a dismissive "false advertising."
The models had been standing outside for a long time with little to show for it, and a sense of dejection filled the air. I tried to cheer them up, but to no avail.
Then I noticed how their melancholy expressions strangely complemented the Time Travel series and decided to let it be.
When there were no passersby, I leaned against the roadside railing with the other staff members.
None of my colleagues complained, but their silence only amplified my guilt.
I even began to doubt the initial concept.
No, I can't think like that. There were many reasons why the event might not be going well. Perhaps the location wasn't appealing enough, or maybe my planning was flawed, or perhaps we chose the wrong day or location.
But could those factors really lead to such a dismal turnout?
Just then, Manman waved to me from afar.
Li Manman: Y/N, someone's here with a delivery!
A white van stopped by the roadside.
The door slid open, revealing someone handing out bags of milk tea and pastries.
You: Huh...?
I approached, and the person stepped out of the van. It was Da Liang, Jesse's manager!
Da Liang: Everyone's been working hard. Have some refreshments to recharge.
I vaguely remembered that, during a particularly hectic moment, Jesse had messaged me, and I had briefly mentioned the popup event, but that was all.
Da Liang: Jesse asked me to bring these. He couldn't get away at the moment.
You: ...Thank you!
I finally found my voice and expressed my gratitude. Da Liang smiled and handed me an envelope.
Da Liang: He also said to give you this if you kept thanking me.
I opened the envelope. Inside was a card with deliberately flamboyant handwriting, but I could still recognize traces of Jesse's familiar script.
Jesse's card: Pristine is my favorite brand, and Pristine's current head designer is my favorite designer. Wishing Y/N great success with this popup event!
The signature was a drawing of a Tangyuan, but the sender was listed as "Miss Y/N's mysterious supporter." I couldn't help but smile. Manman leaned in curiously.
Li Manman: Who sent it?
You: A mysterious supporter.
I took a sip of the milk tea, and it felt like swallowing a cool, refreshing star.
As midday passed, the number of pedestrians increased again.
All the staff members had received refreshments, but there was still quite a bit left over, so I handed them out to the people who stopped to listen to our explanations.
I also went to a nearby mall and bought several standing fans, setting them up to provide some relief from the heat.
More people participated in the event. Although most were only willing to sit in the tent and not try on the full outfits, at least the models had a chance to showcase themselves and the clothes.
Then, someone accidentally knocked over a cup of milk tea, spilling it across the table.
I calmed the crowd and used stain remover to clean the soiled clothes, promising free dry cleaning for those that couldn't be cleaned on the spot.
Once the commotion subsided, I started cleaning the table and floor.
A stack of flyers had gotten soaked and fallen to the ground, sticking to the wet surface. I carefully peeled them off one by one.
About two hours passed, and the weather worsened. Dark clouds gathered, and strong winds picked up.
Watching the people hurrying around and my exhausted colleagues, I stopped Mao Ge and told him not to bother fetching the waterproof covers. We should pack up early today.
Most of the staff had already left. I packed the clothes and accessories into boxes and held them in my arms.
While we were busy, I hadn't felt much, but now that everything had quieted down, with only the sound of the wind against the tent, I suddenly felt exhausted.
I tried to find some inspiration from past experiences or TV shows.
But when you're truly tired, your mind goes blank. You can't think of anything.
My phone rang. I answered, and it was a video call from Jesse.
The background was dark, and I couldn't tell where he was, but his smile was bright on the screen.
Jesse: How's it going, miss? Is your event over?
I tried to make my face fill the screen, hiding the messy scene behind me.
You: It's over. I'm about to head back.
You: What about you? Have you been at the Lianshan Society all day?
Jesse: Yeah. There have been a lot of incidents lately, like the boiling lake, minor earthquakes, and stuff like that.
Jesse: I went to four different locations today. Each time, by the time I got there, the phenomenon had already ended, and no one was seriously injured.
You: So it went smoothly then. That's great.
Jesse hesitated, as if studying my expression on his screen.
Jesse: And you? Did it go smoothly today?
You: I...
My first instinct was to say yes, but seeing his concerned expression, the events of the day replayed in my mind.
You: Not really.
You: I thought that since the online promotions were so successful, the offline event would be too, but...
I paused. On the other end of the screen, Jesse's eyes drooped almost imperceptibly.
You: I'm fine.
I made a gesture as if patting his head. Even though I couldn't actually reach him, he instinctively closed his eyes and scrunched up his face with a smile.
You: Although the event wasn't very successful, at least we opened up some new markets.
You: I've already decided. I'll go back and analyze the successes and failures.
You: I'll recalculate the expenses.
You: The weather's getting hot too. We need to prepare more things to help people cool down...
I rambled on, and Jesse listened quietly, nodding occasionally.
It was strange. When you're feeling down, having someone there, even if they don't say anything, makes you feel better.
But with only one person talking, it did get a bit lonely. I asked him to say something, or even sing a song, and he readily agreed.
The connection was a bit choppy at times, and he seemed to be moving around. The light kept shifting on his soft hair.
Jesse: Are you tired?
You: A little. But seeing you makes me feel better.
Jesse: I was asking if you were tired from holding your phone up this whole time. But I guess I got an unexpected confession out of it.
You: ...!
You: What confession? I meant, you're like my charger.
Jesse: Okay, okay, whether I'm a charger or a power bank, I'm always on standby.
Jesse: Want me to come over and keep you company?
You: No need, I'm not that fragile. Just chatting with you like this has already calmed me down a lot.
You: Are you busy? Am I disturbing you?
Jesse: I could talk to you all night.
We chatted like this, sometimes both of us talking, sometimes just one of us, and sometimes neither of us, simply enjoying each other's presence.
The sound of dripping came from the tent's roof. The wind had died down a bit, but heavy rain started pouring.
The weather where Jesse was seemed to be the same as mine. I could hear the loud drumming of rain.
He brought the phone closer to his face, a hint of nervousness in his expression. His eyelashes fluttered.
Jesse: It's raining.
You: Yeah, a bit. I need to get these things back to the store quickly, or they'll get soaked.
You: Should I hang up? Or put the phone aside—
Jesse: Turn around first.
You: Turn—
I turned around and saw Jesse standing behind me, holding a large umbrella.
We were separated by a curtain of rain, the droplets seeming to wash away time itself, allowing me to focus solely on him.
He wasn't wearing his uniform jacket. The reddish-brown umbrella cast a warm glow on his face.
The call was still connected, and the sounds from both sides synced perfectly, as if time had resumed its flow.
Jesse quickly walked over, took the boxes from my arms, and handed me the umbrella.
He glanced inside and immediately noticed the waterproof cloth folded at the bottom, picking it up and spreading it over the clothes.
Those hands that used to fumble with even a simple drink bottle were now large and strong, effortlessly holding the boxes, as if capable of holding the entire future.
You: When did you get here?
Jesse: When you told me things weren't going smoothly today.
His movements, the dark background, his face filling the screen, the hint of worry in his eyes—it all suddenly made sense.
Jesse: I figured you probably needed someone right now, so I took a taxi over.
Jesse: I was debating whether to tell you on the way.
Jesse: But if I had, you definitely would have told me not to come, that you were fine, that it was too much trouble for me to come all this way.
You: You knew that, and you still came...
Jesse: If you won't take care of yourself, then I will. I'd be an idiot to believe you again. Let's go.
I stared at him blankly.
You: Go where?
Jesse's eyes crinkled with a smile.
Jesse: Don't be silly, miss. We're going to take these clothes back together, of course.
He turned to leave, then, as if remembering something, stopped and faced me.
Jesse: Almost forgot something.
He carefully placed the boxes where the rain couldn't reach them, then leaned down and pulled me into a hug.
Jesse: You've worked hard today, Y/N.
Such a simple sentence, yet it almost brought me to tears.
I had heard the phrase "You've worked hard" countless times. I had almost dismissed it as a workplace formality or a perfunctory way of acknowledging someone's effort.
But the person in front of me, he genuinely meant it. He was simply acknowledging my hard work, nothing more, nothing less.
I discreetly wiped my eyes on his shoulder. Jesse let go and smiled at me, then picked up the boxes and awkwardly linked his pinky finger with mine.
We ran through the rain, splashing each other with water. I held the umbrella, but I wasn't very good at it, and when raindrops landed on my face, we both reacted with childish glee, laughing and shouting.
-
After safely delivering the clothes to the warehouse and tidying up, it was already dark when I left, the rain having stopped.
Time was flying by. Thinking about the unfinished promotional tasks, I sighed again.
Just as I opened my mouth to say I was going back to the company, someone grabbed my hand.
Jesse turned to look at me, his eyes sparkling.
Jesse: Let's go get something to eat. There's a place not far from here, only a twenty-minute walk.
Jesse: Everything on their menu is delicious, so we can relax, not think about anything, and enjoy a nice meal for an hour.
Jesse: And after dinner, I'll walk you home and listen to you talk about everything that happened today. How does that sound?
I could practically picture the scene he described. It sounded wonderful, and I almost immediately wanted to agree.
I even wanted to stay there with him for a while longer, even if we did nothing at all.
But I couldn't. Faced with immense pressure, even a small moment of relaxation felt like an indulgence I didn't deserve. I avoided his gaze and shook my head.
You: No, I don't think I could eat anything right now. But thank you.
Jesse: Aw, come on, why are you thanking me again? Didn't I write you a card already?
You: I saw the card, but I still wanted to thank you again. Thank you for the afternoon snacks, and thank you for helping me carry the clothes.
Jesse: Were the snacks good?
He blinked, a hint of satisfaction in his expression.
Jesse: I specifically asked Da Liang to order several things you like.
You: Ah, about that... I gave them all to the staff and the people who participated in the event.
Jesse: Ah, you didn't get to eat any?
I nodded honestly, already planning to act like the world's most spoiled little sister if he got angry.
Jesse: What's the point of working so hard if you don't even take care of yourself?
You: I missed out on the treats, I'm sorry.
My stomach chose that moment to growl opportunely.
Jesse sighed and tapped my nose with his finger.
Jesse: Treat - me - to - dinner. Consider it a thank you gift for helping you with the clothes.
What a "thank you," I thought. As if I couldn't see through that. No matter the time or place, I was always his priority.
Tangyuan wants to have dinner with me, I told myself. And then, a giant Tangyuan really did fall from the sky, squashing all that pressure flat, out of sight.
You: Okay!
We didn't hail a taxi, opting to walk instead.
The heavy rain had just ended, and water droplets still clung to the leaves, occasionally falling. Jesse and I started hopping and skipping, competing to see who could avoid getting hit by the falling drops.
We passed by a hotel with a pure white hydrangea archway in front of its entrance, and I couldn't help but pause to admire it.
A celebration seemed to have just ended, as people with joyful smiles streamed out of the hotel doors.
And each of them carried a gift bag.
Seeing those gift bags, inspiration struck.
You: That's it! Gift bags!
Jesse looked at me curiously.
You: I know how to improve things! Just advertising isn't enough to attract passersby.
You: Like today, a lot of people were drawn in by the milk tea.
You: If I hand out small gifts during promotions, people would be willing to stop by our popup event for a few minutes.
You: As long as I can get a bit more of their time, I'm confident I can pique their interest.
You: I should also prepare some souvenirs to give out with the brochures.
You: What would be good? Usually it's keychains, tissues, or...
Jesse: Fans. It's getting hotter now, they'd be useful outdoors.
I thought about how I often used flyers to fan myself when I was out and about, and how much I wished I had a fan at those times.
You: That's right, fans are perfect!
Excited, I couldn't help but hug Jesse tightly.
You: Tangyuan, you're amazing! I couldn't think of anything before, but the moment you arrived, my mind became so clear!
You: And we can customize some beautiful packaging boxes with the series logo.
You: The packaging has to be eye-catching. It would be even better if the fans had some other function...
I grew increasingly enthusiastic, and only when my eyes met Jesse's did I realize he had been intently watching me the entire time.
You: What are you looking at me like that for?
Jesse: Do you know how beautiful you looked just now?
Jesse: It was like your eyes held the entire world.
A lingering raindrop fell from a leaf, landing on my forehead, and it felt like it flowed and flowed, all the way into my heart.
I looked into his eyes.
His eyes didn't hold a world, they only held me.
You: Just now? Was I only beautiful just now?
Jesse: Do you want me to say you're beautiful every second of every day? I'm not going to say it.
You: Will you or will you not? Just say I'm beautiful!
Jesse stuck his tongue out at me, then ran off with a laugh.
I stomped my foot playfully and chased after him.
The wind whipped past my face, carrying the fragrance of rain-washed plants. The scenery blurred into a kaleidoscope of colors.
At that moment, the only thing clear in my vision was Jesse, running with me.
I felt like I was transported back to my childhood.
Jesse finally stopped. We had reached a road paved with red and green bricks. He hopped onto a red brick, then turned and beckoned to me.
Jesse: Hey, miss, let's play a game. Each of us can only step on one color of brick.
Jesse: Let's see who reaches the end first.
Game on, I thought. I wouldn't lose this kind of game.
I jumped onto a green brick and chased after him. Seeing that I was catching up, Jesse quickly turned and continued running.
We ran and chased like this, quickly approaching the restaurant. Jesse was still ahead of me, and the green bricks I needed to step on were now far apart.
You: That's too far!
Jesse: Giving up already?
Jesse stood on a red brick, turning to look at me.
The streetlights had come on, casting a warm glow around his head.
You: No way!
Jesse: Then jump over!
I estimated the distance between the two green bricks. It seemed far, and I felt like I would probably fall, but I gritted my teeth and leaped.
As expected, I misjudged the distance and landed off balance. Just as I braced myself for an awkward tumble, I landed in a warm embrace.
You: Jesse...?
Jesse: What are you afraid of? I've got you.
You: ..... (//o.o//)
The air was cool after the rain, and when he spoke, a small puff of white formed in front of his face.
Jesse: No matter what you want to do, no matter how far or high you want to go, I'll be here to catch you.
Jesse: So never think you've lost. And don't always push me away, okay?
Jesse: Let me help you.
The world seemed to fall silent at his last words, leaving only the sound of his heartbeat, pounding in my ears and echoing in my heart.
I rarely had the chance to observe him so closely, so attentively.
His features had become sharper, more defined, without me realizing it.
But those eyes that looked at me, they had never changed. They were always so earnest, filled with a fiery, passionate heart.
My nose tingled, but my mind was clear.
Let me help you, Jesse repeated. He stood tall, hands clasped together. It wasn't a question, but a declaration.
I didn't wait for him to say anything else. I nodded instinctively.
Jesse: I know of a variety show that could feature Pristine's new collection.
Jesse: Y/N, would you... would you be willing to participate?
-
After walking the girl home, Jesse slowly lowered his waving hand. He turned and watched his elongated shadow stretch across the ground, then called Da Liang.
Jesse: I've decided to accept that escape room variety show we talked about.
Da Liang: Didn't you say you were busy with other things and needed to put activities on hold? Why the sudden change of heart?
Da Liang: Not that I have any objections. I've been thinking it's a waste to not capitalize on your current popularity.
Da Liang: The show's producers have invited you several times. They even said they'd create a special musical-themed episode for you.
Da Liang: So, if you've made up your mind, I'll let them know.
Jesse: I have. But I have one condition.
Jesse: I want the episode I participate in to have a Chinese cultural theme.
Da Liang: Chinese culture, that's their theme for the next episode, filming in a few days.
Da Liang: The set's already built and everything. You want them to switch the two episodes?
Jesse: Mhm.
Jesse recalled her image in the pouring rain when he had arrived with the umbrella.
Despite the terrible weather, the difficult situation, the unfortunate turn of events, she had still smiled at him through the phone screen and said, "A bit tired, but seeing you makes me feel better."
Not better at all, he had thought. Watching Y/N's back as she worked tirelessly in the rain, Jesse felt a pang in his heart.
He had to help her. And now, he finally could.
Jesse: If they agree, I'd also like to recommend a costume consultant.
_
After hanging up, Jesse walked into a print shop by the road, borrowed a computer, opened a document, and began working intently.
When he finished printing the document, his phone rang.
Da Liang: The show's producers immediately agreed, but they want to discuss the details. Should I go over there?
Jesse: I'll go.
-
Arriving at the television station and entering the office, Jesse was greeted enthusiastically by the director.
Director: Jesse, you came in person? Please, have a seat!
Director: I'm so glad you accepted our invitation. It's an honor for the show, and for the viewers.
Director: This is your first time on a variety show, so please let me know if you have any requests. I'll make sure they're all met.
Jesse: I should be the one thanking you for agreeing to my unreasonable request to change the episode's theme.
Jesse: I've brought the designer's portfolio. Take a look. She—
Director: Jesse, there's something I need to discuss with you.
The director took the portfolio but didn't open it. He looked at Jesse with a troubled expression.
Director: Of course, I trust your judgment.
Director: However, the production team just had an impromptu meeting.
Director: We discussed it, and everyone agreed that suddenly changing the theme would be very difficult to implement.
Director: We've already invested a lot in pre-production publicity. Changing the theme now would incur significant additional expenses.
Director: It would also be difficult to explain to the platform.
Director: You know, we have to spend our budget wisely, and the appearance fees for celebrities take up the largest chunk.
Jesse understood the director's concerns. He had anticipated this before coming.
He gave a humble smile.
Jesse: Regarding the appearance fee mentioned in the contract, I think we can make some adjustments.
Jesse: Although I've been performing for many years, I'm still a newcomer to the entertainment industry.
Director: No, no, no, you can't say that! It's worth it to spend the budget on you.
Jesse: I heard that many guests give performances during the recording.
Jesse: I've recently written a new song. Would it be possible for me to promote it at the end of the episode?
The director's eyes lit up, and he readily agreed.
Director: I would be absolutely delighted! It's a win-win situation.
Director: Right, you mentioned wanting to recommend a costume consultant...
Jesse: I just so happen to have brought her designs with me.
Jesse handed over the portfolio he had compiled at the print shop, using photos he had taken with his phone.
The director flipped through it, occasionally looking up to praise Jesse's taste.
Jesse inwardly breathed a sigh of relief. See, he could help her.
-
In the depths of night, the city lay enveloped in a blanket of silence and darkness.
And in the deepest recesses of the Lianshan Society's prison, an even denser blackness reigned.
A guard was making his rounds, when suddenly, he found himself staring into a pair of blood-red eyes.
Startled by the terrifying sight, he rapped his baton sharply against the iron bars as a warning.
The man glared at him, demanding to see Jesse, his eyes filled with hatred.
The guard frowned, ignoring him, and barked a few reprimands.
The man slowly lowered his head, his hand trailing along the bars, a strange growl rising in his throat as he retreated step by step into the shadows.
Just as the darkness swallowed him whole, he looked up, as if resolving to do something.
...
Late that night, the man, now dressed in a guard uniform, his cap pulled low, evaded the surveillance cameras as he moved through the prison.
A thick fog lingered outside the prison walls. He recalled Lu Ting's promise that as long as he remained in the Lianshan Society and passed along information to the Blood clan, his family would be well taken care of.
Casting wary glances around him, the man set off towards the Lu family mansion, his destination etched in his memory.
