Okay, back to today's class:

It’s super nice to have Tessa as a guest today. Her methodology opened up another way to looking for trends and creating future scenarios.

A very brief summary of her methodology is: 

1. Collect signals (specific emerging examples) of your related topics, as you research, you may find signals, developments, hypes, trends, etc (Look at her presentation slides for details)

 For example, for water crisis, here are the signals that I’ve found in class:

1) GROHE Sense Guard is the intelligent water control system that detects damaged lines and automatically switches off the water supply.

2) Toilet Combo is an All-in-One Grey water Recycling System

3) Eco Shower Floor

The concentric circles are pretty wonderful when not in use. However, after showering for a long time, they will rise to force you stop showering, accordingly saving water.

2. Pick one signal (usually she would suggest to pick one that has controversial effects, aka people’s attitudes toward it should be different) and use the Rokeach and Schwartz Value List to understand for people who are willing to use the product, what values are hidden behind their thoughts.

For example for me, I chose the Eco Shower Floor as my signal, and then based on the value list, we thought the reason why people want to use it is because:

- Empathy / Sustainability

- Discipline ( Behave themselves )

- Control ( Maybe Government want to control people )

- Commitment

- Awareness

- Altruism

- Selfless

3. Analyze trends based on the values ( due to time limitation, we skipped this step during class )

But for me, I kind of imagine a controlled/ disciplined and sensual sustainability, which means in the future, the sustainability is being stickily controlled and people have to behave, and also people who waste resources would get sensual punishment. 

4. Build a time line from now - 2024 - 2029 - 2034, and envision based on the trend that we summarize, what would happen for each time period.

For me, for NOW, water is very low-priced, and we use however much we want.

In 2024, water has hierarchy, despite the amount of everyday’s basic water need, people have to pay luxurious price for extra water usage.

In 2029, every bit of water usage would be measured and tracked. Every water waste would cause an electric shock running through your body as punishment, (which means maybe in the future, our smart watch would not only measure our health, but can also release electric shock)

In 2034, I imagine in order to have “empathy” of what we waste, and also in order to measure and control the amount of water you drink, water intake would have a different method. People are banned to drink water, so every one has to carry a machine that contains water, and water would be scientifically pumped in to your body based on how much you need. And if you waste water during daily life, the machine would suck out water from your body as punishment.

LoL.

And also Allard’s and Pepijn also thought about a trend, which I think it’s really interesting from a sustainable point of view. Because right now, we have all sorts of machines and robots made from plastics and mixed materials. They are really hard to recycle. So why not start develop bioengineering, and produce all sorts of different functions animals and creatures, like pigeon drones, accountant fishes. They are all biodegradable, Hooray!
