Frankly, I'm surprised it took me this long to accept the inevitable

My real-life tumblr was becoming very fandom-y, and as I quite like to keep those bits of my life online apart (especially since I'm quite likely going to be writing fanfiction again soon, and my 'real' tumblr is both quasi-connected to my real life job AND would make it easy to figure out who I am), here we are.  I dip in and out of fandoms as I get new obsessions, so this will change over time.  (Or become abandoned to the winds of time, to join LiveJournal and MySpace.  One or the other.)  But current obsessions are:

TANGLED.  This eats my life and I love it.  I do love me a good solar myth and chameleon-related slapstick, and also it seems to be eerily good at helping me through a current...well, re-definition of my dreams?  Let's call it that.  I look forward to being the last living human writing Tangled fanfic.

Frozen.  Well, I'm on tumblr, aren't I?  Kristanna all the way, baybee, and I do love Frohana.

Other fandoms I love, but do not stay up all night developing headcanon for:

MCU (especially Captain America)

OITNB

Doctor Who, although ugh, Moffat.  I actually could put up with him until I went to his talk at Hay Festival this year, where he came across as the most amazing arsehole.  So, well done there.

Star Trek:TNG.  All of them really, although I never really watched Enterprise, but this is the one I grew up on.

Classic SF/F.  And some modern stuff, but I'm particularly trying to get through at least a few of the real giants of the genre.  (I am not very impressive fen.  I though The Stars My Destination was just ok.)  I love the fact that fen are a force of nature, and that people have been drawn together because they love dreaming of other worlds for so long.

Farscape.  Every few years I re-watch this.  I might live-blog it next time.

Other stuff I like that'll probably wind up getting stuff reblogged or posted:

KNITTING.  I've been knitting for over 25 years now, this will feature, oh trust me.

Some fine art, mostly post-Turner.

Lord Peter Wimsey.  Or maybe this should go under fandom?  Interwar British literature in general, really.

Classical and folk music. 

Fairy tales, and how we think about them, and how we shape our lives around them.  I'm particularly interested in fairy tales and their relationship to forests/landscape.  I have a long-running interest in the intersection between sex, sexuality, religion, gender, stories, and ritual/ceremony.  I read too much Joseph Campbell at a tender age.

Wilderness, camping, hiking, how we think about wild places.  I read a lot of Robert MacFarlane, Sarah Maitland and Roger Deakin.

I work in the heritage sector, so may get ranty about museums and heritage from time to time.

I cycle a lot, at least for now when I'm living in Wales.

#WelcomeBack @hotelutah #👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 ・・・ After a long pandemic hiatus, last week saw the return of legacy spot the Hotel Utah (500 Fourth Street) and its famous Utah Open Mic. The longest-running open mic night in California, it is a treasured tradition where musicians, comedians, poets and performers share a microphone for sets that are six minutes or less. The roster of performers who have stood on its creaky stage includes Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Guns N' Roses, and PJ Harvey. The Deininger family opened the saloon in 1908, and commissioned furniture makers in Belgium to design and create its ornate bar-back. They also had an exclusive agreement with Fredericksburg beer, brought to The Utah by horse and carriage and lowered into the cellar in wooden kegs. At the time, the residential hotel-over-saloon was a proven business model in the neighborhood, with a 1914 survey finding forty thousand single men living in what is now the South of Market (SOMA) area. The clientele primarily consisted of gamblers, thieves, hustlers, and other folks up to no good. Completion of the Bay Bridge in 1936 ushered in a new type of clientele from across the bay, including longshoremen, merchants, metal smiths, and furniture makers. In the 1950s, Hotel Utah Saloon bartender-turned-owner Al Opatz renamed the bar Al’s Transbay Tavern and would play host to clients from beat poets to gangsters, as well as celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, and Bing Crosby. The bar was renamed the Hotel Utah Saloon yet again 1977, when the co-writer of the 1979 movie The Electric Horseman, Paul Gaer, took over the business and added a new stage for live acts.
