Just moving stuff around in the studio, I came across this peculiar mix CD. I made this in 2005, sometime during the last month or so of high school. I could go on forever about my mixed feelings about my teen years, but the important thing is that I knew the same thing all 18-year-olds know: after high school ends, everything changes. The familiar pattern of life, knowing there was always another school year to look forward to, would end, and then the course of life would be in my hands. So I decided that, on the last day of high school, after it was all over and I was at home that night, I would shut myself in my room and turn off the lights, and lie there to reflect on what was now finished. And I made this CD, containing some of the songs that had kept me sane during those crazy years, to listen to while I thought about all the things I had done, and the people I'd been around. I've only ever listened to it that one time, and I'm not really sure why I kept it, but every time I've stumbled across it over the years I could never bring myself to toss it out. I think we cling to objects from the past like this because they almost seem like bridges over the distance we cannot cross - the distance of time. It's the closest we can come to going back to a place, a state of mind, and into a company that have all long vanished. Even if we reassembled all the people, back at a place that meant a lot to us, it wouldn't be the same; we've all grown up, and we could only think of the old times we shared, or the next thing on our agendas. We'd be artificially replicating something that had been beautifully spontaneous.
