Claw

Seafood is awesome.  Crab is in my opinion a little underrated, partly because it’s just a bit too fiddly to eat and so when the street food stall Claw decided to open a permanent store in Carnaby Street dedicated to the crustacean, it was only a matter of time before I popped down to give it a go.

Sunday afternoon, we headed down and started working our way through the crab based menu.  First up was the soft shell crab.  Crispy and flaky on the outside, soft on the inside; this was a great example of soft shell crab.  It came with a nice aioli and a bunch of spring onion.

We also ordered crab on fries.  The fries were good but overall, I have to admit, this was a little disappointing.  The crab on top was a little mayo heavy with not quite enough crab in it for my liking.  I think I’d give this a miss next time.

They call this a tuna tartare but really, it was more of a ceviche type thing with tiger’s milk.  Super refreshing though and perfect for a nice summer’s day.  One of the rare non-crabby dishes on the menu but worked really well.

The place does rolls as well and we decided to go for the classic lobster roll rather than the crab, mainly because it came with a pile of shoestring fries on top which looked great!  The fries provided a great crunch to the whole thing on top of the creamy buttery mayo and lobster.  I think I still prefer the flavours of the Burger and Lobster lobster roll but this isn’t bad at all.  Think I would try the crab one next time though.

The crab mac and cheese may have been my favourite dish of the whole meal.  This was creamy, cheesy. the macaroni was well cooked and there these big chunks of meaty crab nestled in the middle.  I think I might go back to Claw just for this.  This was excellent!

Last not but least, just to make the meal a little surf and turfy, we ordered the special of the day, a beef dish.  As you can see, it was done pretty rare which I liked and came with some greens.  This was tasty but nothing particularly extraordinary.  Not a bad dish if you are craving some meat but if you’re not, I recommend sticking to the seafood here.

The place is just off Carnaby street on Kingly street so is really convenient.  It’s a great place for a cheap and cheerful lunch or light dinner.  You can sit outside when the weather’s nice and enjoy the mac and cheese :)
Definitely worth a visit if you like crab!
