WIP game: Five times Loki flirted with royalty, please?

Here are my assembled royal OCs! It starts out with Sif and ends with Tony Stark (I like my Tony/Loki to have serious theological implications for the future of humanity, thanks). But these are my babes in between.

Princess Skadi, played by Charlize Theron (I know she's Clea now, but I made this graphic before Dr. Strange: Evil Dead). Skadi is a Jotunn princess who comes to Asgard seeking revenge for the death of her father, Thiazi, who was actually trying to kidnap Loki (and bring him back to the Jotunn). Have an excerpt:

Mother and son sailed over fjords of ice one crisp day. The sky was clear and the wind was high, and the snow glittered bright below them. Sharp falcon eyes sought out specks in the snow, and named them. 

“I see a white fox chasing a white rabbit,” Loki called to his mother. 

“I see the fleas on the rabbit’s fur,” Frigga replied. “What else do you see?” 

“I see a reindeer cropping green moss from a gray rock,” Loki said. 

“I see the tracks the reindeer left in the snow,” Frigga replied. “What else do you see?” 

“I see a feather drifting in the wind,” Loki said, as a single brown feather flew past his eyes. 

“What?” Frigga’s falcon eyes rolled back in her head, and then she threw her great wing over Loki’s body. “Hang on!” 

“Mother!” Loki turned himself into a spider and scuttled under one of Frigga’s feathers just in time for her to bank sharply. “What’s wrong?” 

And it's a pain in the butt for me to italicize or bold on mobile, which is where I do most of my Tumblring from because my laptop is an ancient slow thing. ANYWAY

We have the three Greek gods on the right there. The Greeks invented orgies, the Romans added women. This is pretty much what I imagine Apollo to look like, African and golden. Jack Black just IS Dionysius for me now. I don't have as firm of a vision of Hermes besides that he's a silver haired twink, but this dude was giving off big Bottom Boi Hermes energy. Now, I know that Marvel plays even faster and looser with Greek myths, as they are well within their rights to do, but I'll also be ignoring pretty much all of that. As far as I'm concerned, the Greek gods work pretty similarly to the Norse ones here, they live on Titan and have a dimensional gate to Earth via the Olympus on Earth, and they're a dramatic and incestuous family just like in the myths.

Then there's Logi, who is the Jotunn god of fire. He's often identified with Loki thanks to Wagner, that asshole, but he actually beats Loki in an eating contest at Utgard. By the way, I haven't watched the Dark World and I don't really have immediate plans to do so, so if I'm contradicting anything in it, oh well. I know as much about mythology as the people writing this stuff. Love ya, Stan and Jack. Anyway, while Skadi is not really a goddess in this yet, Logi is a Jotunn god--my headcanon is that godship is named and planned among the Asgardians, whereas Jotunn are just born embodying their deific attributes. So Skadi was named Goddess of the Hunt, Skiing, and Winter for her exceptional skill when she was accepted into Asgard, but Logi, a Jotunn prince, embodies Fire and only Fire as he was born to do. I also have Utgart-Loki in here, who is Odin's old BFF from back when Asgard was just a mead-hall and Odin was allied with some of the Jotunn clans. As you can see, I'm giving some of Myth Loki's attributes and stories to him where they wouldn't make sense for MCU Loki.

Finally, we have Emperor Joseph Norton II. This part in the story is where I pay homage to my lady Eris. She drags Loki to the March on the Pentagon. I have to make this political, right? I always do. Hail Discordia!

Not even in the deepest reaches of the Hellmouth had the world been this dark. Warmth radiated on her exposed arms but no sunlight seeped through the bandages wrapped tightly over closed eyes, nor the scarf that she had spread over her hair to hide the chitinous protrusions. Maybe that made it all the worse. She was no longer separated from normal life by a quarter-million miles but layers of cloth and what she had become.

There was a rush of summer air from the open window beside her, thick with humidity and tinged with the scent of the flowers that Ikora had put on the windowsill. Insects buzzed and birds chattered, and there was a faraway din of vehicles in the streets and jumpships overhead. Occasional voices or footsteps echoing from the high Tower walls.

Inside the apartment, clattering in the kitchen, sharp metallic sounds dampened only slightly by the thin walls. Hushed discussion between a man and his Ghost. They were trying to be discreet, Eris decided, even though it was as likely they thought she was asleep and did not wish to wake her. No, she decided, they did not want to remind her of what she'd lost, and sorrow and envy bubbled up in her.

The air turned suffocating. She sat bolt-upright and leaned out of bed, frantically groping for the window. Her heartbeat quickened and cheeks prickled with heat when moisture gathered at the bottom of her bandages. She pressed her free hand to her eyes, attempting to stop the ichor from leaking. She could not let him see it.

Light footsteps and the whine of the door hinge. "Eris, let me get that," Asher said, coming out in the same brusque manner as most of his words. Clinking as he put the tray down on the nightstand beside her. His arms brushed against hers as he found the open windowpane and closed it.

More footsteps and a click and a fan rattled to life. The cool stale air of the room blew around, capturing with it the scent of jasmine tea.

"I made it the way you like," he said, and she reached carefully for the tray, found the uneven glaze of her mug and picked it up. As she lifted it to chapped lips, steam wafted against her half-exposed face, hot but not unpleasant.

"We used to have tea parties," Eris said. Images of Asher — the mortal Asher, first-generation earth-born Awoken, all smiles, all energy, and herself, caught in reflection in the muddy waters where they used to catch frogs and on the glassy ripples of the lake where they would go fishing, round-faced and suntanned — flitted through her mind. "Once, we used your mothers' Reef-crystal tea set. We were careful, but they still grounded you for a week. I had to climb the tree outside your bedroom to talk to you."

He laid his hand against hers, his touch cool against her sticky skin. She thought of them as children, linking sweaty hands as they balanced across fallen trees in the woods on the outskirts of the City, brandishing sticks as swords and retreating for untold hours into fantasy worlds of their own invention.

"I can't say I recall," he said dryly. Guilt still tugged at Eris over letting the wish-dragon reveal her pre-guardian life. Asher had been such a huge part of it that it felt cruel he could not share in those memories, too.

Her stomach curdled as the memories they shared intruded into her mind. In a way, their time together as Guardians had been the grown-up version of the games they used to play, only with real knives and guns, real wilderness instead of the stands of trees near the City walls. Days spent patrolling the dangerous frontiers of the system, nights spent by the fire, trading tales until one or the other fell asleep first. Of idle afternoons off-duty in the City, catching up over tea under colorful café verandas. That life was now as distant and separate as their first.

Pressure built in her face as she tried to stop herself from crying.

Still, she could picture him so clearly. His messy white hair and his mismatched robes and the wrinkles at the corner of his eyes when he smiled. She wondered if that had changed in the years that she'd been missing. She hoped it had not.

"I wish I could see you."

"I'm here..." he murmured, softer than she was used to.

"I want to see you," she repeated, more forcefully, voice catching in her throat as her sinuses clogged. "But I can't let you see — "

That was all she could get out before her words dissolved into sobs, and she was overtaken by tears that could not flow. Asher clutched her hand in his, tightly, protectively, and she clasped her fingers around his in return.

"Take as much time as you need. Don't make yourself do something you aren't comfortable with…

"But please, do not think you have to hide any part of yourself from me. I have loved you across lifetimes, cousin, and nothing will change that."

Any Golden Age WW villains you'd love to see reinvented?

Ooh, I can think of a few!

Zara.

The leader of the cult of the Crimson Flame, Zara uses manipulation and visual trickery to instil absolute belief and fear and compliance in her followers. She’s also an awful mess of orientalism, racism and straw feminism, an “Arab” woman whose father sold her into slavery when she was a child, leaving her with a deep and abiding hatred of all men.

Strip all that away, though, and there could be something kind of intriguing in pitting Diana against a self-styled prophet who may or may not have supernatural or divinely-derived powers, but who’s far more terrifying in her totally mundane ability to masterfully manipulate those around her.

Diana’s lasso, by virtue of what it is and the subtext in Marston’s writing, is a tool of bondage and restrain that is used to free and liberate — it cuts through illusions and magical trickery; it overcomes deception, even self-deception, and frees those who hold it to see and speak the truth. Zara could be reimagined as a kind of inversion of this, a supposed prophet who preaches freedom and truth in the light of the all-piercing Crimson Flame, but uses the influence she holds to ensnare and deceive and manipulate.

Duke of Deception.

Not the character himself, but the concept of a divine antagonist whose power lies in deception and falsehood. Greek mythology offers some really cool possibilities here. Apate is a personification of fraud and deceit, making her basically the living antithesis of the Lasso of Truth. There’s also the Pseudologoi, a horde of nasty spirits who are lies personified – and, according to one telling, they’re children of Eris (Strife).

Queen Clea.

Originally imagined as the dictator of the remote Atlantean outpost of Venturia – perhaps we could recast the Venturians as a long-ago offshoot of Atlantis, who have now set their sights on conquering Themyscira? Honestly, I’m mostly fishing for an excuse to have Wondy and Mera team up here.

Doctor Psycho.

Kind of a cheat, because Doctor Psycho’s appeared fairly consistently since the Golden Age. I hadn’t realised it, but he’s even shown up in the New 52, just not in any of Wondy’s comics. But I’m bringing him up because I think he’s due for a revamp.

I like the nightmare-fuel element that George Perez brought to the character – the horrifying pleasure his Psycho took in getting right inside people’s heads, twisting their perceptions until they don’t know what’s real. His go-to move of attacking Diana by turning innocent people can also make him a difficult one to corner, something Rucka plays with in his 2003-2006 run.

And between Psycho’s deep-seated misogyny and his relish in violating people’s innermost privacy, I feel like there’s an allegory here for the recent MRA and Gamergater subcultures.

The major thing that needs to change, though, is his appearance. Since his conception, Psycho has always been portrayed as a short-statured man with exaggerated, unattractive facial features, and this has typically been used to highlight his creepiness and depravity. In fact, in his Golden Age origin, his villainy and misogyny actually stemmed from repeated mockery and rejection due to his appearance.

It’s an ugly trope that perpetuates hurtful stereotypes about people with dwarfism, and for that reason alone we should do away with it. But it also serves to blunt the potential for commentary on present-day misogyny and harassment culture – because when a character looks comical and outlandish, it’s easy to see their agenda as comical and outlandish, too; and because Gamergaters typically don’t look like Doctor Psycho, they look like any other able-bodied bloke on the street (which again circles back to the ableism thing).

Great question. For me, the definitive list includes the most prominent and recurring adversaries. Her core rogues gallery should include:

Cheetah, Circe, Ares, Giganta, Doctor Psycho, Silver Swan, Doctor Poison, Veronica Cale, Doctor Cyber, Queen Clea, Paula von Gunther, Blue Snowman, Angle Man, Medusa, Duke of Deception, Deimos, Phobos, Eris, and (sadly) Maxwell Lord.

I'm partial to Golden Age villains, so I'd personally love to add the rest of Villainy Inc. to the list (Zara, Hypnota, and Eviless), but they just haven't appeared much post-GA. Still, Joye Hummel ghostwrote many of those stories so she firmly established Diana's rogues gallery early on. It's just a shame subsequent writers didn't follow that.

There are some relatively recent characters who may end up on the list, such as Devastation or Genocide (both of whom were brought back for Steve Orlando's Horsewomen arc). Hecate is another one who could be pushed into the core rogues gallery.

Wikipedia has a pretty good comprehensive list of Wonder Woman villains, but there's definitely some bias there due to it being edited by fans (for example, Janus is far too new to be part of Diana's "central rogues gallery").
