I'm not saying drug addicts dont deserve help, but iono, they seem lower on the order of people who need help.”

So far, my answer to “If people choose drugs over success, they shouldn’t have the same things as successful people” has been “People don’t choose drugs in the way that you’re thinking, there’s an element of economic coercion and social momentum.” But there’s another thing that I would like to point out: prioritizing the needs of the “deserving” over the needs of addicts or the “undeserving” is an unjustified hierarchy when scarcity is manufactured for profit. We have enough food, shelter, clothing, and other things to meet the basic needs of everyone, at least where I live. We have such a surplus that food gets thrown away, the dumpsters locked and monitored with cameras so that hungry people can’t access their basic needs for free. Houses remain empty as investor properties, helping to raise the rents around them and make money for people who already have incredible amounts of money, while people sleep on the street and get rounded up by cops just for existing in public. I don’t want to place myself above anyone else on a hierarchy. I want there to not be a hierarchy. The idea isn’t to make the owners and bosses into underlings, and turn the underlings into bosses and owners. It’s to get rid of the ideas of bosses, underlings, and owners. We don’t need people to occupy those roles to have a functional life together as humans.  Our hierarchical systems are inefficient, cruel, wasteful, and unnecessary. And if you feel like you need police to tell you not to murder people, and you need a boss to tell you to do something with your time that meets your needs, and you need a landlord to allow you to live in your home, then... Maybe you’ve got some internal soul searching to do.  

The people that attacked us on TDoV and the type of person who would send me this message would probably both say that they value freedom, but how can you have freedom when you’re constrained by a rigid hierarchy? When you’re alienated from those around you because you’re dead scared of them rising above you, or because you’ve got to do everything you can to rise above them? Are you free when even the idea of real liberation makes you cling fearfully to the bars of your cage?

You’re not expected to break yourself out of the hierarchy single-handedly. Anything you can do to meet people’s needs when they don’t “deserve” it is subversive to the hierarchy. We need to have solidarity with people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol because we are all in the working class. The vast majority of us will never be capitalists; that is, people who own private property, the means of production, or a significant amount of wealth. We need to have solidarity with people who are addicted or homeless or living in poverty because that could be most of us in just a short amount of time if something went wrong. A mentality that says, “Well, I’ve got everything I need, why should I care about others?” isn’t just cruel, it puts you at risk. If you’re willing to sacrifice someone else’s wellbeing for your comfort, then your wellbeing is subject to forfeit as well.  

Capitalists don’t care about you. Capitalists care about themselves and their profit and their property. If you want them to care about you, you have to threaten one of those things, and we are no threat to capitalism as isolated individuals. Solidarity is power. Solidarity is liberation. Solidarity is life. We need each other, because alone, we are powerless. Alienation is death.

In which you and Seungkwan wake up nearly too hungover to function and neither of you knows where his coat could have  ended up.

Your body wakes you up far before you're ready with the desperate sensation of please drink water burning in your throat, tongue, and on your dehydrated lips. With the way your head is pounding, you’re not sure you can open your eyes without the whole room spinning sideways. You press your own clammy hands to your cheeks and forehead, trying in vain to steady your aching mind.

When you do try to get up, it’s with eyes barely cracked open, and you only make it a step off the bed before tripping over something (a shoe? a purse? a pillow you’d thrown off the bed? You couldn’t be bothered to check) and landing in an ungraceful sprawl on the floor. The sudden thud provokes a questioning murmur of your name from the boy still lying in the bed you’ve just left.

“Seungkwan,” you whine back, your own voice sounds like it’s going through a loudspeaker to your sensitive head, “are we dead?”

“I think I’m still drunk,” he says back, and you promptly shush him for speaking too loudly. “I’m whispering!” he defends without otherwise moving from his sprawled out position onto his duvet. You honestly can’t gauge if he’s telling the truth about his own volume with where your headache is currently.

It isn’t unusual for you to end up in your friend’s bed after a night out. The two of you have a tendency to just crash at whoever’s pace is closest to your last stop of the night. Which happens to be a detail you can’t quite remember at this juncture.

“I’m... gonna try to get water,” you tell him. He groans back a questioning huh and so you repeat yourself, “Water. Do you want some?”

“You got water?”

“I’m getting water,” you reiterate, sitting up and immediately pressing the side of your palm into one of your eyes as you try to relieve the pressure that suddenly swirls just behind your skull.

“Oh,” Seungkwan yawns out the sound, “That’s good.”

You take it as a yes.

The clock in his kitchen reads 5:13 and you’re frankly shocked that you managed to wake up at any point before noon, let alone this early.

You navigate the kitchen slowly, stopping a few times to steady yourself against the counter when it feels particularly like you’re going to fall over again without even having an object to blame it on. When you make your way back to the bedroom with two glasses of water, you immediately spill some water from both cups when you plop down onto the bed beside him.

“Sorry,” you wince and set one cup down. The other you hold out his near-comatose looking form. Seungkwan peaks open one eye and asks what you’re apologizing for. “Spilled. Now drink water.”

He groans as he sits up slowly. He takes the cup from you with both hands, clearly not trusting himself to do anything steadily yet. “Thanks,” he drawls, voice laden with sleepiness and the recognizable twinge that liquor sets into his tone.

“Were you wearing that last night?” Seungkwan follows up with after giving you a long look over. You glance down at yourself and realize you’re wearing a white sweater you’ve never seen before (or -- have little recollection of having seen before) with a few purple-tinged splotches down the front.

“I have no idea what this is,” you answer as you blink back at him.

He snorts a small laugh and takes a small sip of water. “Oh, man,” he says like a revelation of the utmost importance has just occurred to him, “Water is so good.”

“So pure,” you concur as you reach for your own glass on the nightstand. You find your cellphone there, too, and take it up with your free hand. “Why do I have two voicemails from Soonyoung?” you ask as you look at your notifications, “Who leaves voicemails anymore?”

“Was Soonyoung with us last night?” Seungkwan asks instead of proposing any kind of answer.

“No. It was just --” You pause before rattling off the group you’d set out with, doubt peaking through the heavy fog of your hangover. “Maybe he met up with us? At, uh... that bar?”

“What bar?”

“It was... very blue, I feel?”

Seungkwan furrows his eyebrows, frowning at you with a clear lack of recognition. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“That bar! That we went to after the other one,” you fail at explaining, nearly throwing your phone across the room as you wave one arm in a useless attempt at a visual aid.

“After the first one?” He tries to find a common understanding with you.

“No, no -- that one sucked. We were only there for one drink, right?”

“I think I had two,” Seungkwan comments, more so to himself than at you.

“Uh, I don’t know. It was blue though! With the funky glasses, you know?”

“I wish I did,” he shakes his head with a faint laugh.

You groan and lean back into the pillows, carefully holding your cup of water up to avoid spilling. “I bet he’s yelling in those messages,” you return to talking about the voicemail symbol on the top bar of your phone’s screen. 

“Maybe he was doing the call-your-friend’s-missing-phone thing.”

“I didn’t lose my phone last night,” you say as you prop yourself up only as much as you need to in order to take a drink of water without feeling like you’ll choke on it. “Did you?” It only occurs to you to ask because usually your phones end up beside each other on mornings like this.

Seungkwan leans to one side to glance at the nightstand before letting himself flop down on the mattress entirely. “Did I?” he wonders, exhaustion doubling in his tone at the notion.

“Go check.” You nudge his shoulder with your foot.

He grumbles something you don’t make out as he crawls off the bed to look for his phone.

You nearly fall back into sleep when Seungkwan comes back in sounding not quite relieved enough to announce that his phone was by the front door.

“What’s wrong?” you ask.

“All the stuff I put in my coat pockets was just on the floor,” he answers, lying back down beside you.

“So?”

“I lost my coat.”

"Weren't you wearing that nice coat you got for your birthday last year?" you try to recall, opening your eyes to look at him.

He whines and rolls over to burying his head in a pillow. Your best friend instincts kick in just enough to will you into an upright position. You give his shoulder a few soft pats.  "Don't get down. We'll find it."

"We don't even know where we were last night," Seungkwan reminds you, muffled by his pillow.

“Someone will know,” you assure him, opening up your texts.

You’re promptly distracted by the number of unread texts you have left from the night before. A glance over your most recently received messages makes you cringe at your own lack of memory of their contexts.

             Jun: let me know when you guys get home safely!!              Hosh: cm back theyre playing good stuff now              Yuha: he said that?????              Jeonghan: k lame              Haseul: lol how drunk are you              Minkyung: thks for the clothes swap you savd my outfit !              Coupss: you good?

“Okay... Who were we with at the end of the night?” You try to jog your memory by voicing it out loud.

“I don’t know,” Seungkwan repeats, though at least he turns onto his side to look at you instead of hiding his face.

“Oh! Wait -- idea,” you start, only to immediately regret your own enthusiasm. You pause, running a hand over your forehead as you try to will the headache away. “I always snap too much when I’m drunk, right? Maybe I geotagged some of the places.”

This prospect must strike Seungkwan as reasonable, because he sits up and leans his head on your shoulder as you open up snapchat and scroll over to look at your own story.

It starts with the snaps you remember taking. The getting ready drinks you'd had with the girls over at your place and the selfies you'd taken with Seungkwan and Jeonghan at the first two bars you'd gone to.

Your story is twelve images in when you get the first one you don’t recall taking. It’s a line of shot glasses on a bar with blue and purple lights reflecting off everything in the picture. In the black bar across the middle is the text: #tquilatequilateqila.

“Well, that explains some things,” Seungkwan comments. You hum an agreement.

A few blurry snapshots and shaky videos of dancing and shouting along lyrics, the background in your pictures changes to a different venue. Then there’s a selfie of you and Seungkwan all but crushing Soonyoung between the two of you with the cation ‘look who we found aaaaaaaaaaahhh’. In the top right of the pictures is a location tag for a bar/lounge called Pour Decisions.

“Okay, another mystery solved,” you murmur as you tap through a few more pictures. The keen observer would also notice at this point that your orginal top changes to the stained sweater you woke up in this morning.

“You really do snap way too much when you’re drunk,” Seungkwan reaffirms your earlier point with a chuckle.

Next, a video comes up of you walking unsteadily down a sidewalk. “We’re going! We’re going -- where are we going?!” drunk you practically yells into the camera. You tilt your phone to show Seungkwan a few steps behind you, slowed down because he’s more dancing than walking. “Look at this guy!” You giggle from off-screen. Your face pops back into the frame as you slur, a little quieter, “I love my friend!”

“Look, you had your jacket on there, so we know it at least made it this far,” you notice, choosing to ignore everything else in the otherwise embarrassing clip.

There are a couple more pictures after that. Including a bathroom selfie you took, pouting and giving a peace sign into the mirror. “To raly or nt to rally,” your caption reads, “thats question”. Along the bottom of the picture is a tag reading: saturday night @ ALTITUDE. The next picture has the same tag at the bottom, and is selfie of you and Seungkwan leaning your heads against each other, both with your eyes closed and smiles on your faces.

The screen changes, a much darker setting but the video is steadier. It shows you and Seungkwan in the back of a cab. You’re both looking into the camera with grins before you turn to look at Seungkwan as you ask, “So, one to ten scale how good was tonight?”

In the video, Seungkwan chortles and tears his gaze away from his own image in the screen to look at you. “Like... fifty thousand,” he answers. Then there are several seconds of the two of you staring at each other in the backseat, all smiles and only a few inches apart before the video cuts out.

Your snapchat story ends there.

“You didn’t have your jacket on in the cab,” You say after a couple moments of pondering silence.

With pounding heads and a fresh change of clothes, the two of you take a cab back to the club called Altitude. Just as you pull up, you spot a tired-looking employee just about to lock up the front door.

You all but tumble out of the cab before sprinting a few steps along the sidewalk. “Hey! Wait! Please!” you call out for his attention. The man shoots you a questioning look. “My friend left his coat here last night,” you pant out, squinting in the too bright light of morning.

“Look, we just finished cleaning the place out and--”

“Please, please, it’ll only take three minutes, top.”

Seungkwan arrives at your side at this point. You don’t have to look at him to know he’s putting on his best puppy dog eyes.

“Fine,” the employee sighs, turning the key back in the lock.

It ends up taking about five minutes for the employee to help the two of you go through the other abandoned items that had been left in coat check from last night. But you succeed in your early morning mission.

Back out on the sidewalk, Seungkwan thanks you for what must be the fourth or fifth time as he shrugs on his coat. “You’re the actual best,” he professes as he slings an arm around your shoulders. He pulls you into a sideways hug. “I could seriously kiss you and your drunk snapchat habits.”

“Please don’t,” you laugh, on arm going around his middle in return. “My head is still killing me and I think anything other than toast or water would make me vomit.”

“Sexy,” he jests with a laugh as he pulls up his phone to call a car for the two of you. “Is our hungover marathon still on?”

The answer, obviously, is yes.

A few hours later, with a familiar episode of a favorite show playing on his laptop as the two of you lounge in his bedroom, the worst of the symptoms subside. “Can we turn the volume up? My headache’s finally gone,” you tell him.

He complies. Several more scenes go by before Seungkwan says, “I kinda meant it, you know.”

“Meant what?”

You look at him and find his gaze waiting for yours. You wonder if this moment looks anything like that last shot from that last video on your story.

He kisses you like it’s a question, and all you can do is grin in reply.

Neither of you is sure if it’s your first or second kiss. That’s a question only your cab driver would be able to answer.

Both of you just hope it isn’t the last.

Transformed minds -- Romans 12:1-8 -- August 30, 2020

The wise man built his house upon the rock,

the wise man built his house upon the rock,

the wise man built his house upon the rock,

and the rains came tumbling down.

 The rains came down and the floods came up,

the rains came down and the floods came up,

the rains came down and the floods came up,

and the house on the rock stood firm.

 The foolish man built his house upon the sand,

the foolish man built his house upon the sand,

the foolish man built his house upon the sand,

and the rains came tumbling down.

 The rains came down and the floods came up,

the rains came down and the floods came up,

the rains came down and the floods came up,

and the house on the sand went splat!

The Bible consistently puts forward two ways of living and asks us to make a choice.  Sometimes the metaphors are stark and are presented in terms that are as plain as day.

“Choose this day whom you will serve.”

“No one can serve to masters.”

The narrow gate vs. the wide gate

The hard path vs. the easy path

Other times the choice is put to us a bit more subtly, requiring us to think through the choice that is really being offered to us.

In Mark 8, Jesus tells the disciples to “take up their cross.”  The cross was reserved as the method of execution for political insurrection—those who refused to define their lives by the value structures of the nation and the culture, and were deemed to be a threat to the orderly functioning of society.  Taking up our cross involves risk.

At his arrest, Jesus tells Peter to “put away your sword…for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.” This is a command that persons in our faith tradition interpret as binding on us all because of another command Jesus made: “love your enemies.”  We can not hold on to both of these at the same time.

 In each case, the one who is doing the asking is warning us that there is a choice to be made.  Which way will we go? Which path will we follow?  Or, more directly, “Who is Lord?”

Paul’s words to the church in Rome are equally stark and clear.  After eleven chapters of wrestling with the great brokenness that exists between heaven and earth, and how that great brokenness has corrupted all things, and how Jesus came to bring us all back into right relationship with God, he now describes what this looks like in the day to day goings-on of the most real community the world can ever know: the church.

Let’s allow that to sink in for a moment: Jesus intends the church to be the most real community on earth. Among the many things we love about our congregation, we can add this to it: that as our minds are transformed by the Holy Spirit, we become a forgiving community of forgiven sinners, extending to others the same mercy, grace, and forgiveness that Jesus has offered to us. And in doing that, we become an anticipation of the age to come, a congregation that embodies the reign of Christ in the here and now.

It seems somewhat ridiculous to say that this morning, out here and online, exiled from our sanctuary.  But it is the truth.  This is as real as it gets, and it becomes the motivation for Paul finding yet another way of presenting to us the great choice that must be made when he tells us that our calling is to put our lives on the line for one another:

Present your bodies as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1)

That is an unusual way to put it, because when we think of religious sacrifices we normally think of their death. Something in the giving up of life provides satisfaction to the gods to appease their anger or ward off disaster or achieve some other desirable outcome.

But in the faith tradition of Jesus, the sacrifice is experienced in our living, not in our dying.  Not everyone believes this.  They might not say it out loud, but a lot of people practice a ghostly, disembodied faith either by waiting around until they die so their soul can go to heaven, or by believing that the misdeeds of our body are excusable matters or understandable indiscretions.

Paul reminds us that our faith is lived out through the very activities of our bodies—the things we do and say; the things we don’t do and don’t say, the places we go, the places we don’t go.  Every moment, every choice, every encounter is an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to Jesus.

We come from a long faith tradition that values the living out of our faith as a top priority. One of the interesting ways this shows up is in the very first hymn of our hymnal. When the Brethren and Mennonites got together in the late 80’s and early 90’s to publish a new hymnal, the choice for the first hymn proved to be difficult.  A lot of thought goes into what will be hymn #1 in a hymnal, apparently.

As the story was told to me, the hymnal committee struggled a bit to find just the right hymn to be #1.  And then they came across a hymn they hadn’t seen before: What is this place. Consider the words, of verses 1 and 3.  You begin to sense that church is more than just bricks and mortar and windows and pews, don’t you?  The real beauty of this hymn (in my opinion) is captured in verse three.  It turns out that What is this place is a communion hymn:

The bread and the cup is a living sign that becomes embodied in our lives as we give and receive justice and peace.  In his book Reading Romans Backwards: A Gospel of Peace in the Midst of Empire, Scot McKnight says it this way:

Christian sacrifice is an embodied way of life offered to the invisible but ever-present God. What they do is their sacrifice: when they speak, listen, embrace, eat, drink, love, have sexual relations, guide children, offer wisdom, work, garden, pay taxes, offer visible expressions of care, respect, approve and disapprove, pray, participate in fellowship and worship and instruction…one could go on. Their sacrifice is their embodied life (28-29).

Transformed minds

And so Paul tells us to

not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of [our] minds (Romans 12:2)

He tells us this because our minds are not neutral in the living out of our salvation, the giving and receiving of grace, justice, and peace.  Because what we dwell on has such a powerful influence over our thinking and our behavior, Paul actually has quite a bit in to say in his letters about our minds:

Our minds can become debased by sin, which leads to more sin (Romans 1)

Our minds can become “puffed up” by idle notions, leading to our becoming separated from God (Colossians 2:18ff)

Our thinking can become “futile” (Ephesians 4:17), “unsettled” (2 Thessalonians 2:2), or “depraved” (2 Timothy 3:8).

These are real situations; we all have friends whom we’ve watched become consumed with anger or rage or hatred.  In Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, we see it played out when the Ghost of Christmas Past takes Ebenezer Scrooge back to when his fiancée breaks up with him.  Belle says (clip begins at 2:40):

Scrooge is silent, because he knows it’s true.  His mind was pulled away from his love.

Our minds are to be transformed in Christ, that we may discern the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.

The church, again

Whenever Paul explore the depths of theology, you can believe the church is not far behind.  Why are transformed minds so important?  Because of what we noted earlier: the supreme importance of the church.  Our minds are to be transformed so that we will think of ourselves less and think of one another more.  Paul says it this way

I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment (Romans 12:3).

He then goes on to describe spiritual gifts—the blessings that God has given to us to help build one another up in the church, gifts like prophecy, ministry, teaching, exhortation, generosity, diligent leadership, cheerfulness.

The difficulty and the importance of this text is in connecting it to the times we are in.  I want to start a few ideas today that we’ll continue next Sunday about how the extreme partisanship of our times has the potential to make congregational life difficult and to reflect on the credibility of the church.  What pains me is seeing people I care about become so partisan that they just become angrier and angrier, and even use their political opinions to evaluate their theological beliefs and their church participation.  

Theologian David Fitch offers to us another way when he reminds us that

Theological disagreement is to be expected in church formation today. It used to be—50 years ago maybe—that people chose their church according to the denomination they were brought up. Today, finding a church you agree with on everything is not possible, and there are new social moral challenges every year. But the church is formed in the midst of theological disagreement. We must have spaces to have discussions about theological and ethical issues…so that together we can sort out “what does it mean for us to follow Jesus in this moral challenge?”

This is the example of Paul and his churches, Christians who wrestled with how to take people from different backgrounds, different philosophical and theological understandings, and different socio-economic groups so that they could be united in Christ. What unites us is to be more powerful than what divides us. And it starts with seeking the mercies of God so that our minds can be transformed and our bodies can be offered as living sacrifices so that we may honor one another and bring glory to Jesus as a faithful congregation bearing witness for Christ.

The Wind-Down

I've backed up my data, I've collected contact info, and I've explored a variety of new platforms with varying degrees of success.

I've reached a tentative consensus on my plan for moving forward. It's a little more complex than I would have liked, but I'm settling into some new habits and I'll continue to iterate and refine over time. Here's where I've landed:

Nothing was irrevocable; everything was within reach. Just around every corner lay something curious and interesting, something I had never before seen or done or known about. 

Consuming

I chose: Apple News. I slept on this for a while, for reasons I can't totally remember. I revisited it and spent some time customizing it and decided it's the best newsfeed for me for now.

Pros:

Free

UX is good and it's easy to follow publications/topics

iCloud syncing across devices + desktop app is hard to beat. The next best product I looked at (Thread News) only had a mobile app, which was a dealbreaker for me.

I follow mostly mainstream-is publications and there's a full database of sources that are easy to follow.

I haven't tried News+ yet but I like the option of it - a while ago I had a similar magazine aggregator from Conde Nast that I loved and this seems similar or better.

Cons:

Initially, I didn't like the Top Stories on the home page. I don't really love the CNN/ABC/CBS-type focus on 24-hour headline news and wish this was better curated from my interests and favorite publications. I finally figured out that you can limit the Home Page to publications that you follow, but it's not an obvious setting.

I hate that share/copy link produces an apple.news url instead of the native url; this is obnoxious.

Runner Up: Thread News had a really nice Daily Digest feature that curated from your favorite publications.

I chose: Pocket for random articles that I come across on Twitter, in Slack, or recommended through text messages, I save them to Pocket to read later.

Pros:

Free (with premium paid option)

Syncs across desktop, mobile, iPad app; app UX is nicely optimized across devices

Tagging (good for saving favorites)

"Article view" that clears out web junk for a streamlined reading experience

Chrome extension for easy clipping/adding

Cons:

None yet; it's simple and works the way I want it to

Runner up: Instapaper. It has very similar functionality to Pocket, I just slightly prefer the design of Pocket. If you like a really minimalist reading experience, Instapaper is for you.

Keepers of private notebooks are a different breed altogether, lonely and resistant rearrangers of things, anxious malcontents, children afflicted apparently at birth with some presentiment of loss.

Creating

This one was a beast. I struggled for weeks to parse out exactly what I wanted on this front and which criteria were most important to me, because it became clear quickly that I wasn't going to get everything I wanted in one place.

I chose: Tumblr I initially wrote this off because the homepage/discovery can be nauseating without the right default settings. A tour of the mobile version convinced me to give this a second look: the mobile app is great and the posting experience is (pardon the cliche) delightful. I decided to give it a deeper dive behind the scenes and found that I was able to customize a lot of what I initially disliked. The auto formatting for photo, quote, link, and chat posts is charming and simple.

Pros:

Customizing themes is simple and there are a lot of choices.

I can use my personal domain

The posting experience is easy and relatively error-free

The tagging! I love my tags and they work so nicely. I was also able to find a theme that features tags so you will always have easy access to the latest photos of Darwin.

Great for multimedia posting

Built-in share buttons

Cons:

Not very good at importing content from other platforms; I manually recreated a few favorite posts, but otherwise pretty much had to start from scratch on content

No built-in analytics, aside from follower counts, which is not something I expect to care about or track. I set up tracking on Google Analytics, but I'll miss the built-in analytics that WordPress had. Since WP bought Tumblr, I'm hoping that they may eventually add these features to Tumblr

I just don't care about the social/discovery components here and I wish I could turn them off

Ads. I wish I could pay to make them go away.

Runner up: micro.blog For the first couple of weeks, I thought this was going to be my choice. I had a solid experience importing and archiving a lot of my content from WordPress, Instagram, and Medium. Unfortunately, once I started trying to use the platform on a daily basis, I ran into a lot of issues and challenges that gave me pause on using and recommending the platform. To be clear, a good number of these issues were either user-error or bespoke preferences due to my personal quirks on how I want to organize and share content on the Internet. Some of this is a result of it being a new-ish platform that still has some blind spots for non-developers; it's not a mainstream product yet and I'm not sure it's trying to be. Based on my personal preferences, I felt Tumblr was slightly better equipped for my use case. I'm still going to keep using micro.blog for a while in tandem with Tumblr to see if my preferences change and/or if the platform adopts some of the feedback I shared with regard to cross-posting and UX.

I chose: Drafts. One big challenge for me in this process was the desire to cross-post some content in multiple places while limiting where I post other content. I didn't want to fill my Twitter feed with cat pictures, but I wanted some little corner of the Internet for Darwin's biggest fans (my mother). Drafts is basically a universal text editor that pushes drafts of text to a variety of services, including micro.blog, Twitter, Day One, Google Drive, Evernote, WordPress, Gmail, and even text messages. It's highly configurable and I'm only just scratching the surface of its power. Creating text drafts here allows me to easily push drafts to a variety of different places with just a few keystrokes. It syncs with iCloud, has really robust tagging and filtering, and has mobile, iPad, and Mac apps. It's very cool.

He laughed literally until he choked, and I had to roll down the taxi window and hit him on the back. "New faces," he said finally, "don't tell me about new faces.” 

Engagement

I chose: Twitter I've increasingly found Twitter to be a place where my friends/followers care about what I care about. The messages I care most about sharing are amplified. I can choose to unfollow, mute, or block people who are harassing or distressing me. I can follow people whose expertise I value. It can still be a cesspool at times but Twitter leadership seems to be taking steps to improve the platform - identifying misinformation, a conversation feature that limits replies, etc. For now, it stays.

Creative Background Patterns Using Gradients, CSS Shapes, and Even Emojis

You can create stripes in CSS. That’s all I thought about in terms of CSS background patterns for a long time. There’s nothing wrong with stripes; stripes are cool. They can be customized into wide and narrow bands, criss-crossed into a checked pattern, and played with in other ways using the idea of hard stops. But stripes can be boring, too. Too conventional, out of fashion, and sometimes even unpleasant.

Thankfully, we can conjure up far more background patterns than you can even imagine with CSS, with code that is similar in spirit to stripes.

Background patterns are images repeated across a background. They can be done by referencing an external image, like a PNG file, or can be drawn with CSS, which is traditionally done using CSS gradients. 

Linear gradients (and repeating linear gradients) for instance, are typically used for stripes. But there are other ways to create cool background patterns. Let’s see how we can use gradients in other ways and toss in other things, like CSS shapes and emoji, to spice things up.

Gradient patterns

There are three types of CSS gradients.

Linear (left), radial (center) and conic (right) gradients

linear-gradient(): Colors flow from left-to-right, top-to-bottom, or at any angle you choose in a single direction.

radial-gradient(): Colors start at a single point and emanate outward

conic-gradient(): Similar in concept to radial gradients, but the color stops are placed around the circle rather than emanating from the center point.

I recommend checking out the syntax for all the gradients to thoroughly understand how to start and end a color in a gradient.

Radial gradient patterns

Let’s look at radial gradients first because they give us very useful things: circles and ellipses. Both can be used for patterns that are very interesting and might unlock some ideas for you!

Emoji icon patterns

This is where things begin to get interesting. Rather than just using geometric patterns (as in gradients), we now use the organic shapes of emojis to create background patterns. 🎉 

It starts with emoji icons. 

Solid-color emoji patterns

We can create emoji icons by giving emojis a transparent color and text shadow.

Those icons can then be turned into an image that can be used as a background, using SVG.

Instead of using plain emoji icons, we can use gradient emoji icons. To do that, skip the text shadow on the emojis. Add a gradient background behind them and use background-clip to trim the gradient background to the shape of the emojis.

Then, just as before, use the combination of SVG and data URL to create the background pattern.

 I tried placing the emoji in an SVG <text> element instead of the HTML added using <foreignObject>. But I wasn’t able to create a solid shadow behind it in all the browsers.

I didn’t think of SVG when I first thought of converting emoji icons or CSS shapes into background images. I tried CSS element(). It’s a function that directly converts an HTML element into an image that can be referenced and used. I really like this approach, but browser support is a huge caveat, which is why I’m mentioning it here at the end.

Basically, we can drop an element in the HTML like this:

…then pass it into the element() function to use like an image on other elements, like this:
