A poem by John Dryden

On the Death of Mr Purcell
1
Mark how the lark and linnet sing: With rival notes They strain their warbling throats, To welcome in the spring. But in the close of night, When Philomel begins her heavenly lay, They cease their mutual spite, Drink in her music with delight, And listening and silent, and silent and listening, and listening and silent, obey.
2
So ceased the rival crew, when Purcell came; They sung no more, or only sung his fame: Struck dumb, they all admired The godlike man, Alas! too soon retired, As he too late began. We beg not Hell our Orpheus to restore; Had he been there, Their sovereign’s fear Had sent him back before. The power of harmony too well they knew; He long ere this had tuned their jarring sphere, And left no Hell below.
3
The heavenly choir, who heard his notes from high, Let down the scale of music from the sky; They handed him along, And all the way he taught and all the way they sung. Ye brethren of the lyre, and tuneful voice, Lament his lot; but at your own rejoice: Now live secure, and linger out your days; The gods are pleased alone with Purcell’s lays, Nor know to mend their choice.

Downtown owl by Chuck Klosterman has been on my reading list for probably a decade. I've read most all of closterman's books on music and I always enjoyed them. So the summer I decided I would go ahead and tackle Downtown Owl.
I got about halfway through and right in the middle of the book apropos of absolutely nothing was the description of torture and killing of someone's pet cat.
It was graphic and disgusting and added absolutely no nothing to the story. It had no reason to be there. I was so disgusted I just stopped the book right there.
The book honestly was not that good to begin with, definitely not up with some of the other books of his I have read. And in the end I paid $17 just to be completely and utterly disgusted.
This was not a horror novel, this was supposed to be a humor novel. And to have that jump out, out of nowhere is absolutely Unforgivable.
DO NOT BUY/READ THIS BOOK.

Queen Anne from the school of John Closterman, circa 1702
Anne (6 February 1665 – 1 August 1714) was Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland between 8 March 1702 and 1 May 1707. On 1 May 1707, under the Acts of Union, the kingdoms of England and Scotland united as a single sovereign state known as Great Britain. She continued to reign as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland until her death in 1714.

Reasons why I love old historical dramas: I can totally live with the make-up and hairdos that somewhat betray the production period, but the attention to costume details in many vintage dramas with historical settings is truly stunning.
This is Queen Anne in The First Churchills (1969) being dressed for her coronation in a gown closely modelled on the portrait thought to have been made in the year of her coronation, and she's even wearing a replica of Mary of Modena's diadem, which Anne reportedly wore upon entering Westminster Abbey on the occasion.

Why won't modern historical dramas ever commit to such a degree of attempting to recreate the period they're set in, and instead abandon it altogether under the flimsy pretense that viewers wouldn't be able to relate to the characters if the 'aesthetic' isn't 'modernised'?
Of course, history can never be truly faithfully recreated; yet I have to say I am more forgiving of seeing an extra in a gown of clearly synthetic fabric or another more or less obvious lapse of accuracy in material culture when a film/series demonstrates an overall commitment to the period.
