Microsoft to launch Azure Availability Zone in Melbourne Cloud
Microsoft has announced it will launch a new Azure Availability Zone (AZ) in Melbourne to improve infrastructure redundancy in the vendor’s Australia Southeast data centre region. The zone is Australia’s second after the Australia East Azure Availability Zone in Sydney, which was launched in 2020 to help distribute cloud resources across three physically separate locations around the city. Azure Availability Zones are physically and logically separated data centres with their own independent power source, network and cooling systems. Each region has a minimum of three availability zones to allow users to run two isolated copies of their applications. Microsoft will also open an Azure Availability Zone in the New Zealand DC region, which is called New Zealand North (Auckland). “[Azure Availability Zones] help organisations better protect their applications and data from infrastructure risks, ranging from technical software issues, hardware failures and natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and fires,” Microsoft’s announcement read. “By expanding our AZ capabilities to our Australia Southeast (Melbourne) and upcoming NZ Central (Auckland) regions, customers will have multiple low latency and high resiliency cloud locations, and more choices for managing their workloads in the Microsoft Cloud.” The vendor said the Australia Southeast region has grown significantly since it launched in 2014 alongside the Australia East region in Sydney, and now encompasses multiple data centres across metropolitan Melbourne. The region currently offers Azure Backup services, premium storage (99.9 percent uptime SLA), Availability Sets (99.95 percent uptime SLA) and region failover options, and the AZ is expected to bolster the resilience by offering a 99.99 percent financially backed uptime guarantee. In the announcement, Woolworths head of technology Ducas Francis said, “The needs of our business and our customers are constantly changing, which requires Woolworths’ technology infrastructure to be scalable, agile and resilient.” “Microsoft’s new Azure Availability Zones in the Australia Southeast region will further support our efforts to innovate in the cloud and simplify work for our teams in order to deliver exceptional customer experiences across our network of stores and online channels.” Also quoted was NAB chief technology officer Steve Day, saying, “Resilience is the foundation of everything we do in technology, underpinning our ability to provide our customers with great banking experiences.” “Microsoft’s investment in additional Azure Availability Zones in Melbourne will enable us to deploy critical applications into the Australia Southeast region.” [Correction: this article originally stated that Microsoft would open an Azure Availability Zone in Auckland in its NZ Central data centre region. This was incorrect – the region is called New Zealand North (Auckland). The article has been corrected.] Source link Originally published at Melbourne News Vine

Document Backup on a budget
tldr: Free backups of your stuff.
If you’re writing stuff and you’re a forgetful mess (some of us are) this might come in handy.
Fact 1: Everyone should do backups because your drives WILL fail. Sooner or later. All of them. Fact 2: Backups that are not made automatically are NEVER actually made. So you have to automate to get that done.
One way of accomplishing this is to use a cloud service called Mega. You’ll find them at mega (dot) nz. They have a couple of nice qualities that you may like. For starters they’re not located in the US, which means they are at a safe distance from corporate takeovers and general snooping from companies and three-letter-organizations. They are also very privacy minded. EVERYTHING you hand over to Mega is encrypted, and only you have the key. They can’t decode your stuff to go through it. No-one else can either.
How to do it RIGHT NOW.
You start by having - or getting - a mail address. This will be used exactly once while setting things up. You can use a disposable one. Go to mega dot nz and hit the red “create account” button up to the right. Go through the steps. Make sure you save that password somewhere. Respond to the confirmation mail. Your account is now working.
Next step: download the megasync client. Install it. Point it to your fic folder, or documents folder, or whatever you want to make backups of. Let it sync. When you add, move or change documents, megasync will mirror your changes to the cloud. You may want to set it up to start automatically as windows starts. No need to think about it, no button to push. That means your backups will get made.
You now have a cloud drive with a backup of your stuff. You get fifty GB of space when you sign up for a free account, which should be enough for your document backup needs. If you have more than fifty gigs of documents I’m impressed, and you’re Stephen King, but I know there’s a general temptation to start putting all downloaded books and music etc there too. If you run out of space you can switch to a paid version and get more or less unlimited storage. But the first fifty gigs are free, and for most of us they are enough. There is also messaging and mobile clients and a bunch of other built-in stuff that I never use. I use Mega for backups, and it’s imho very good for that. And it’s hard to beat the price.
Are there better solutions? I’m sure there are, but I don’t know of any that are more affordable or easier to get started with right now. And right now really is a factor, because you do NOT have a backup. Statistically speaking. But you could have one, in 15 minutes, without paying money for it.
I have a headcanon of the dude behind Mega buying Tumblr. It would be kinda nice to have a social network combined with WORKING messaging, encrypted communications and secure cloud storage of our stuff. I could live with that. Plus Mega are known for actually fixing bugs, which would be startling for tumblr users but I think we could get used to it.

HOW DOES CLOUD COMPUTING SAVE MONEY FOR YOUR BUSINESS?
Tumblr media
The use of remote servers via the internet to store, manage and process information and data saved by the business is known as cloud computing. Data is stored on remote servers that can be accessed from multiple devices, regardless of the operating system which ensures maximum safety and security. 88% of cloud users experienced cost savings and 56% noted an increase in profits, according to a recent study.
HOW CLOUD COMPUTING HELPS US SAVING MONEY
∙        Hardware: The reduction in cost is a huge advantage of cloud computing. Hardware needs are left to the vendor instead of purchasing in-house equipment. For new companies, purchasing new hardware can be expensive, and inconvenient but now these issues are alleviated by  the simple cloud computing as the resources can be acquired quickly and easily. The vendors are in charge of repairing or replacing equipment including the purchase cost and off-site hardware cuts internal power costs as well. Moving to cloud applications or storage can help maximize space and significantly cut energy expenditures.
∙        Labor/Maintenance: Cloud solutions lead to a decrease in labor and maintenance costs. There is less demand for in-house IT staff as the hardware is being owned by vendors and stored in off-site locations. It is the responsibility of the vendor if any servers or other hardware needs up-gradation or repairs, also doesn’t cost our company any time or money.
∙        Productivity: cloud computing can be cost-effective for enterprises because of the increase in workforce productivity. Cloud software is notably faster than conventional installation. Its deployment can happen in a matter of hours, instead of weeks or months that a standard company installation may take. This means employees can spend less time waiting and more time working. SaaS applications are typically available through an internet browser. They can be learned quickly and easily. An online connection is all needed to access most cloud storage and software applications from anywhere, which is great news for enterprises that rely on travel or telecommuting policies in place.
∙        Capital Investment: This provides savings and flexibility in several ways. Our company doesn’t have to pay for software that isn’t being utilized. Cloud software typically only costs per user, unlike upfront license. Also, pay-as-you-go the software can be canceled at any time which reduces the financial risk of any software if it doesn’t work. Lastly, the up-front cost of the cloud is lower than in-house solutions. For companies that need top-tier products but don’t have extensive funds immediately available, cloud solutions provide fantastic flexibility.
∙        Saving energy: In U.S. the annual average electricity was 10.60¢ per kilowatt-hour (2019). Depending on our business, the electricity cost can be overwhelming. A great deal of energy is used by the internal servers. Cloud computing tends to use less electricity. Its vendors have better utilization, which means better power efficiency. Cloud providers are good at forecasting, meaning they will allocate resources for our business in the right way. Taking the advantage of the economies of scale, the vendors lower the energy costs extensively.
We might want to research widely before settling for a cloud service provider. Our chosen vendor should have stable cloud software, exceptional security features, and power backup. With the right cloud computing provider, our company will save significant costs. When searching for cloud solutions, it's best to partner with a reputable provider. The cost-effectiveness will be worth the investment. Benchmark IT Services is a leading cloud service provider in NZ, even though this company is situated in Australia, its services made it popular all around the world.  These services are versatile, scalable, and dependable, hence many businesses use them in their operations. Making it one of the top cloud service providers in NZ.

Travel Photography Tips
Photos and videos are our way of freezing a moment in time, waiting to be enjoyed for years to come.
It’s a physical collection of tender moments, sights and adventure. It could be a snap of fascinations never seen before, the story of a face showing the culture of a community, the spirit of a stunning landscape and instant flashes that will never come again. A photo is one of the easiest souvenirs we can bring home with us to remind us of the perfect holiday.
With that in mind, here are some great travel photography tips to help create that ideal image.
Protection
That said, now a few words about protecting your camera. Theft is rife in the dodgy areas of our world (and the not so dodgy too!), however you would be amiss if you thought packing your camera in your suitcase was completely safe. Make sure to carry your camera and accessories with you onboard your airplane with you. This should protect it from theft and damage to a greater extent. Don’t flash it about in “dodgy” areas, you may find yourself a target. Overall, insure, insure, insure. Travel Insurance is vital, with the added extras clause ticked and serial numbers documented. We would hate for you to have all those lovely shots held in your camera and to have it whipped away from you the day you are coming home.
Memory, Batteries and Backups
Nothing worse than a beeping camera to tell you there is no memory left.
Oh no, you should have bought that extra memory card and battery out with you today. When you think you are covered, slip an extra battery or memory card in your pocket anyway, believe me it will be required when you least expect it.
And I cannot stress enough the importance of backing up. You could use Cloud technology, or you may even want to carry a small hard drive with you to load up. Move your prized images to another device, that way they are secure, you can transfer the images anywhere you need them plus you have all that lovely memory back again.
Learn how to improve contrast, sharpen image elements, soften color tones, reduce highlights, boost shadows, minimize sensor noise, and adjust exposure levels (without going overboard) using the software.
Balance
Ask yourself, what are your key points and where do you place them within the frame? The Rule of Thirds is one of the most basic understandings when creating a more balanced photocomposition. Essentially split the image into three imaginary areas both horizontally and vertically. These will help to frame the most important parts of your image in a way that is most pleasing to the eye.
Experimenting
By experimenting with your camera you get to know its abilities (and you’re your own!).
Try differently angled shots of the same element. Standing straight on, kneeling, from an elevated height or get right down and shoot upwards from the ground.
Different distances will also change your perspective of a composition. Panoramas, wide angled shots are very different from the more mid-range “generic” shots most people take. And then there is the up close and personal framing that will give you a more in-depth look at part of a building or landscape,or the intricacies of a face – just pay attention to where the shadows are and your source of light, it makes all the difference.
Use your Rule of Thirds to create a pleasing composition – experiment with this too.
What does it look like if you sit the main element to the right, or left? Does it create more interest? Or do you prefer dead centre? It’s your personal preference, so go for it. After all, if you are not happy with it, delete and try again. And again, until you get it just right.
People
Walking up to someone and asking to take their picture can be difficult in Australia, let alone a foreign country.
It’s natural to be nervous, after all they are simply living their lives and you are virtually invading their space. Will they say no or get offended? Will they understand you?
If you want to take a portrait, especially if they are going to be up close and personal, get to know the person a little first. Basically, touch base and start with “Hello”.
Chat a few minutes before asking to take their photo – compliment them on something, buy a souvenir from them, ask directions etc. Once you have a line of communication open, asking to take their picture is a lot less intrusive. You may even make a lifelong friend too!
Just remember, not everyone will say yes. Some people will say no. Others will see the opportunity to make some money. Don’t stress if the answer is no, there is always another opportunity around the next corner! And… some people will be just fine with you taking a pic.
Plus, it’s always a good idea to learn the phrase for “Can I take your/your child’s photo?”, “Thank you” and “No problem”. It always pays to be polite.
Waiting for the ‘Soul’ of an Image
Photography is about seeing what’s right in front of you. Yet, it’s not just about framing the perfect composition or getting the lighting spot on, although both are important too, your photo should have soul. Use your eyes to see, but attune your emotions, heart and mind to the soul of the image.
Before you press the shutter, take time to slow down and feel. Pay attention to your surroundings, community, culture, even the weather. Be prepared to wait out the weather or light (your research will come in handy here), sit ready for a truck or person to move into or out of frame, have an idea in mind as you look for the face in the crowd that shows the emotion you are trying to capture. Most professional photographers understand they need to have extreme patience and are prepared to wait for that one single moment so they can reap the rewards of a fabulous photo.
Take the time, and look for the soul of the image.
Every destination is different, and every portrait is unique. What are you waiting for? Grab your camera and let’s start! Need some ideas for iconic destinations? Speak with an Accor Vacation Club Cruise and Travel Solutions Specialist at AU: 1800 70 80 90 or NZ: 0800 45 19 97.

What To Look for In a Web Hosting Provider?
When it comes to choosing a web hosting NZ provider, there are many factors to consider. The most critical step is identifying a service provider who can meet your budgetary constraints while still providing the necessary level of reliability, support, and features. There are a lot of service providers to choose from, and that can be overwhelming. You can, however, find a provider that will provide you with everything you need to create a successful website if you take the time to do your homework and ask the right questions.
Uptime
When deciding on a web host, reliability in terms of uptime is crucial. For the sake of your website's visitors, you should verify that your host can guarantee a minimum uptime percentage. Find out how reliable the host really is by inquiring with current customers. If there is consistent feedback that a given provider has a low uptime, you should probably look elsewhere.
Capacity and transfer rate
Pay close attention to the bandwidth and storage space offered by a web host when making your selection. The amount of information you can send and receive and store on their servers is related to these two factors. You'll need a provider with lots of bandwidth and space if you intend to store and transfer lots of data or files. If you don't, you might have issues in the future. Inquire about the availability of unlimited bandwidth and storage space, as this may be a selling point for some service providers.
Support
Support is an essential part of any web hosting service. It's important to find a provider with round-the-clock availability of customer service in case you ever run into trouble. Choose a service that stands out with its helpful and knowledgeable customer service team. Look for a company that provides phone, email, and preferably live chat support options.
Security
When it comes to web hosting, security is paramount. Your XML sitemap generator and hosting provider should have a robust security infrastructure in place to protect your website from hackers and other online threats.
About ASH HOST:
ASH HOST is a highly dependable cloud backup NZ, Internet, and services provider. It provides a wide range of service options when it comes to web hosting. You can choose from the cheapest options for personal hosting or, you can go with premium options for business hosting.

Heres how Microsoft is bringing more options to Australia and New Zealand Microsoft Australia News Centre
“The Cloud” plays an increasingly significant role in our lives – enabling remote work and learning, global collaboration, business continuity, supporting discovery and innovation, and importantly, powering critical life and safety services. Today we’re outlining additional cloud infrastructure investments Microsoft is making to ensure organisations of all sizes in Australia and New Zealand can continue to transform their business operations and accelerate the pace of innovation. This includes upcoming availability of Azure Availability Zones (AZs) in our Australia Southeast (Melbourne) and New Zealand North (Auckland) datacenter regions, to support additional services and higher reliability. Microsoft’s global cloud infrastructure spans 60+ datacenter regions across the globe, connected by over 280,000 kilometres of optical fibre, and built to deliver on our customers’ stringent expectations of security, data residency, reliability, and sustainability. In Australia and NZ, Microsoft operates datacenter regions in Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra today, with a new datacenter region coming soon to Auckland, NZ. This geographic separation of infrastructure is a key requirement for many organisations to meet disaster recovery objectives for critical infrastructure. However, multi-regional architectures can be challenging and are often reserved for only the most critical workloads. Azure Availability Zones make multi-regional architecture much easier by providing infrastructure redundancy within a datacenter region. In 2020 we launched this capability in our Australia East (Sydney) datacenter region, giving customers the ability to distribute cloud resources across three physically separate locations around the Sydney metropolitan area. This helps organisations better protect their applications and data from infrastructure risks, ranging from technical software issues, hardware failures and natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and fires. By expanding our AZ capabilities to our Australia Southeast (Melbourne) and upcoming NZ Central (Auckland) regions, customers will have multiple low latency and high resiliency cloud locations, and more choices for managing their workloads in the Microsoft Cloud. The Australia Southeast region has grown significantly since launching in 2014, and now encompasses multiple data centres across metropolitan Melbourne. Customers’ workloads are already protected from unexpected downtime or data loss through comprehensive Azure Backup services, Premium storage (99.9% uptime SLA), Availability Sets (99.95% uptime SLA) and region failover options. Azure Availability Zones will further enhance this resilience by offering an industry leading 99.99% financially backed uptime guarantee. Source link Originally published at Melbourne News Vine
