'Father of the Modern Circus' 8th January 1742, birth of the 'Father of the Modern Circus' Philip Astley. The following day 9th January 1768, Philip Astley stages the world's first modern circus in London incorporating horse tricks, musicians, acrobats and clowns into his horsemanship shows; staged in a circular arena that he called the circle, or circus, and which would later be known as the ring. In 1782 Astley would open Paris’ first circus. That same year, his former company member equestrian Charles Hughes would open a rival amphitheater and riding school. One of Hughes’ former students John Bill Ricketts would later in 1797 open the first circus in the United States, in Philadelphia.
