World’s rich are rattled and looking for old-fashioned security

(Bloomberg) –A few blocks from Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, 46 Park Lane resembles a private club with wood-paneled walls and an ornate fireplace dating back to Britain’s Victorian era.

But down a flight of stairs is one of the most secure rooms in London. Built by IBV International Vaults, the steel-walled stronghold is scheduled to open next month and will cater to billionaires looking for a place to stash their most prized possessions.

“We’re getting calls every week about a room available for 2.5 million pounds ($3.2 million) a year,” said Sean Hoey, managing director of IBV London, referring to an apartment-size space. The firm, which also has 550 safe-deposit boxes on site and room for about 450 more, is betting on London’s reputation as a “safe haven,” even with Brexit.

This will be IBV’s sixth location, and it’s hardly the only such firm fielding queries from the wealthy. From London to Switzerland to parts of the U.S., the rich are looking to store precious metals, cash and cryptocurrency. For some, it’s the threat of a global recession. Others are avoiding bank deposits as negative interest rates force lenders to charge for holding cash. Many are concerned about natural disasters.

Hedge fund titan Ray Dalio captured the anxiety last month when he warned the global economy is under threat from an explosive mix of ineffective monetary policy, a widening wealth gap and climate change. A majority of wealthy investors are stockpiling cash in anticipation of a sharp market drop before the end of next year, according to a survey of clients from UBS Global Wealth Management.

“We’ve seen extraordinary demand for safe-deposit boxes ever since we started offering them in 2015, and that demand has really gone up since the late summer,” said Ludwig Karl, a spokesman for Swiss Gold Safe Ltd., which operates high-security alpine vaults. “Most people say they are planning for difficult economic circumstances.”

It’s a similar story for Sincona Trading AG, a precious-metals dealer with more than 1,000 safe-deposit boxes for rent in central Zurich. It had scores of empty boxes three years ago, but now it’s renting about five a day, said Benoit Schoeni, a managing director.

“There has been an extreme demand,” he said. “It won’t take too long until we’re full up.”

Safe-deposit boxes can range from a few centimeters in height to the size of a kitchen cabinet. Another option are free ports — warehouses in tax-free zones such as Singapore, Geneva and Delaware favored for storing art, but which typically limit the amount of time that pieces can be held.

There are more than 25 million safe-deposit boxes by some estimates in the U.S. alone. They can be used for the mundane to the exotic. A private collector held the Crown of the Andes, made with 5.3 pounds of gold and more than 400 emeralds, in a Citibank box before its sale four years ago to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Still, for many banks, they’re no longer a core offering.

The amount of space they require is one deterrent. That’s especially the case in London, home to the world’s largest population of wealthy individuals, according to real estate broker Knight Frank. In the city center, few places have secure storage facilities as large as IBV’s on Park Lane, where customers can also purchase gold coins from across the globe.

In the U.S., safe-deposit boxes also have largely fallen out of favor as banks close branches and opt not to install them in new ones. Demand has waned in recent years, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Bank of America Corp., the nation’s two largest lenders.

“Much of the decline can be attributed to clients opting to store documents online, especially younger clients,” said Bank of America spokesman Don Vecchiarello.

But there’s revived interest as fears of weather disasters and wildfires have prompted more people to secure their valuables, said Jerry Pluard, founder of Safe Deposit Box Insurance Coverage. The boxes are also an option for cannabis businesses that are locked out of the U.S. banking system because marijuana remains illegal at the federal level, he said.

Some Swiss firms are also seeing demand driven by central bank policy. Negative interest rates have left Switzerland’s banks caught between the prospect of losing money to hold client deposits and imposing fees that could chase customers away.

UBS Group AG, the world’s biggest wealth manager, and rival Credit Suisse Group AG announced plans this year to expand measures for charging rich clients for holding excess cash. To some, these extra costs have made the safe-deposit box a viable alternative. A spokeswoman for UBS’s Switzerland bank, which operates almost 250,000 safe-deposit boxes nationwide, said demand from clients has declined in recent years.

“The storage cost for cash is cheaper than negative interest rates,” said Swiss Gold Safe’s Karl. The firm offers six box sizes, with the largest renting for 4,039 Swiss francs ($4,079) a year. “Cash storage has become a strong business for us.”

Some bankers said the desire for safe-deposit boxes makes little sense. To avoid charges on their accounts, the wealthy can spread their cash across multiple banks. Clients also need to buy insurance in case something happens to the money, such as a fire.

The proliferation of nonbanks providing safe-deposit boxes has prompted some Swiss lawmakers to question whether they’re providing a safe haven for wrongdoing such as money laundering, noting they don’t face the same level of scrutiny and regulatory oversight as traditional banks.

Storing large sums of cash in safe-deposit boxes demands a checklist of tasks. Those include arranging transport of the money and keeping detailed records of its location to avoid raising suspicions over money laundering if the cash ever returns to a bank account. Moreover, failing to strictly adhere to a safe-deposit firm’s protocols may result in being rejected as a customer.

“The even bigger issue is getting the cash back into your account,” said Felix Brill, chief investment officer of Liechtenstein-based VP Bank, which manages about $50 billion of assets and offers some safe-deposit boxes. Still, “no one likes to pay negative interest rates. Everyone looks for alternatives.”

Swiss Loophole: Italians looking to hide assets turn to safe-deposit boxes

Safe-deposit boxes aren’t always a fail-safe.

In 2015, burglars drilled through the wall of an underground vault in London, making off with $20 million of jewelry. A year earlier, a customer of a Wells Fargo & Co. branch in Highland Park, New Jersey, lost millions of dollars of rare watches that had been stored in a safe-deposit box, the New York Times reported in July.

Ironically, heists and scandals can boost other firms offering safe-deposit boxes as the rich hunt even more secure places to stash their prized possessions.

Christopher Barrow, chief executive officer of London-based Metropolitan Safe Deposits, said his company spent more than $3 million to build a facility that opened this year in southwest London.

“Hatton Garden was a classic case,” said Barrow, whose firm has more than 15,000 safe-deposit boxes in central London alone. “There was a flight to quality on the back of it.”

Sole survivor of Ben Nevis avalanche speaks from hospital bed

Mathieu Biselx, pictured, has described the horrific moment his three climbing friends were engulfed by snow on Ben Nevis

A climber who survived the Ben Nevis disaster in which three people were killed has described the horrific moment his friends were engulfed by snow after one of them shouted: ‘Avalanche!’

Mathieu Biselx, 30, was seriously wounded in the avalanche on Britain’s tallest peak which ‘wiped out’ the rest of his climbing party.

He was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, where he remains in a stable condition in intensive care.

Speaking from his hospital bed, the father-of-one said it was a ‘miracle I am still alive’ but said: ‘My three closest friends are dead’.

One of the dead climbers, aged 43, was also Swiss and the others, aged 41 and 32, were French. Their next of kin have been informed.

The group were caught by the river of snow and ice in a gully on Ben Nevis as Storm Gareth blew in with strong winds on Tuesday morning, triggering a huge search and recovery operation in ‘brutal conditions’, a rescuer said.

Mr Biselx, father of a little girl, said the group arrived in Scotland on Sunday evening and the climb on Tuesday was their first excursion on the mountain.

Talking to Swiss newspapers Le Nouvelliste and Tribune De Geneve, he said: ‘We were not very high and all of a sudden we heard a noise. One of us yelled: ‘Avalanche’.

‘We got into a safe position but in two seconds we were swept away by heavy, compact snow. I felt myself fly through the rocks.’

Describing how he freed his head from the mass of snow, he said: ‘I called my friends, I shouted. No response. Then I realised the magnitude of the drama.’

The friends, who lived near each other in the canton of Valais in Switzerland and were members of the same mountain club, were on a climbing holiday in Scotland.

‘My three friends proposed this trip because I have been going through a difficult time on a personal level. I finally agreed and we organized this trip around Christmas time.

‘We had dreamed of this trip for weeks. My three closest friends are dead…It’s horrible. ‘We arrived Sunday evening in Scotland. Our first trip into the mountains was on Tuesday.

‘We knew the dangers. We consulted guides but it wasn’t sufficient. We clearly had the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s a miracle I am still alive.

‘I think of my friends and their families. It goes round and round in my head.’

Mr Biselx, who has a young daughter, said: ‘It’s a terrible drama. Two died instantly, the third soon after. They were great people.

He continued: ‘Both my legs are seriously injured. ‘My back, one shoulder and one arm are affected, but I’ll get through it. While my friends… It’s a terrible drama. ‘It’s terrible, they are no longer here. They will not see their family again.’

Ben Nevis, near Fort William in the western Highlands, is a popular destination for experienced climbers, attracting 125,000 visitors each year.

Tuesday’s incident follows two recent fatal accidents on the mountain, which at 1,345m is the UK’s highest.

On New Year’s Day, a 21-year-old German woman, who was a student at Bristol University, died after she fell from a ridge she had been climbing with three other people.

She had been hiking on what is known as the ‘ledge route’ when she fell around 500ft.

In December, Patrick Boothroyd, 21, from West Yorkshire, died after falling in the Tower Gully area.

Samedi 7 juillet, de Sarnico (I) à Valeyres/sous/Rance (CH) . Le plus court chemin pour espérer arriver à temps et croquer une part du gâteau d’anniversaire du Guzzi Fan Leman fait quand même 450 km, m’indique fidèle TomTom. En cours de route, comme on doit bien franchir la muraille alpine, je choisi l’option “Val d’Aoste/Grd-St- Bernard”, par les lacets bien sûr, on va pas s’enfermer sous le tunnel alors qu’il fait grand soleil dehors! Et puis l’autoroute, un peu ras le casque, qu’on en a, et même aussi la Calife, pour elle c’est ras les pneus ! Je le sais car je sens bien sa hâte de retrouver des virolos un peu plus excitants que les longues doubles voies rectilignes qu’on lui impose depuis deux jours. Patience, plus que 250 km avant le pied du col et enfin pouvoir prendre le notre !

Sans autre désagrément que longer le Léman un peu difficilement du côté de Montreux qui célèbre en jazzant la 52ème édition de son festival, on retrouve vers 18h30, non loin de Orbe en Suisse, beaucoup de Moto Guzzi et les guzzistes qui vont avec . Ils sont venus, ils sont tous là, à l’invitation de nos amis helvètes du Guzzi Fan Leman qui fêtent le trentième anniversaire de leur club. Il y a même une dizaine de guzzistes polonais ! En carpatant durant les semaines précédentes, on en a vu pas mal des polonais sur deux roues mais plutôt au guidon de bavaroise (la 1200GS, encore et encore...ça devenait lassant !) ou de milwaukéenne, jamais de mandellesi.

On est bien entouré.

y a de la bière fraîche et à manger.

un groupe de v...x. -d’un certain âge, comme nous- musiciens qui envoient des bons vieux rock, bravo les Quinqua-Sept !

et puis de la belle mécanique !

et de l’ancienne qui démarre encore au quart de tour !

et de la toute neuve et récente qui fait la belle, et des envieux !

Un bel anniversaire avec des invités bien sympathiques, merci toute l’équipe du GFL !

Bref, la nuit tombée, on ne tarde pas trop car étapes marathon des trois derniers jours plus raconter, re-raconter et encore raconter des bribes du périple dont on arrive tout juste (on aurait dû prendre le micro, ça nous aurait évité les répétitions 😀) nous ont lessivés. Demain, il fera jour.

Travel to Ribeauvillé via Geneva

18/04/2016: The morning started early with breakfast at the hotel followed by a walk around the town. The weather was at best miserable but we were heading back north so it had to be expected.

Annecy is a lock town located on the northern banks of Lake Annecy, itself located at the crossroads of the great routes from Italy to Geneva to Vienna and one of the oldest inhabited towns in the Northern Alps.

Initially a Gallo-roman village called Boutae on the Fin plains, by the 12th century the people progressively moved across to build a “new” Annecy on the banks of the Thiou and at the mouth of the lake. A medieval town subsequently developed with a stronghold constructed on an island within the Thiou, effectively controlling a critical section of the north-south passage.

Over the centuries Annecy has shifted from a religious refuge protecting bishops from the Calvinist Reformation to eventually an industrial town following occupation by the French Revolutionary Army in 1792. From there, industrial destiny was established with many industries relying on the hydraulic power delivered from Lake Annecy via the Thiou. Hydro-electric power was developed by the end of the nineteenth century.

Tourism grew during the middle of the century attracting visitors to the Alpine regions and Lake Annecy.

We walked several blocks down Rue Carnot where everything seemed the norm. Mostly closed. After all it was 9:30. Within only a few hundred metres we encountered a large church where the Shroud of Turin was once housed, apparently. Quite grand, but on a French scale, probably quite average.

The Church of Our Lady of Liesse built during the 19th century is located in the heart of the old city. It’s 14th century predecessor apparently held the Shroud of Turin for a brief period during the 1560’s

From there it was a short distance to the old town. An interesting and confusing aside is that the old town is the new town. Ten kilometres away lies Annecy le Vieux (the old) which was settled BC by the Romans. At some stage, there was a new town built, Annecy le Neuf , but now known as Vieil Annecy (old Annecy). Not much Roman still exists and Annecy le Vieux is just a suburb.

As we wandered through the streets beyond the Palais de l'Isle, still with not too many shops opened, we were drawn to the canal which pierced the old town’s heart. Not far from Palais de l'Isle and still on the southern side, saw us on and around the bridge off of Quai Perrière, looking beyond the turbulence of the canal’s weir, beyond the calm waters to the bridge and not much more than a hundred yards further, Lake Annecy.

Still lake bound, we headed along the saturated promenade to the Quai de la Tournette to look across the lake, our view bounded by the marina where the larger tourist boats were moored to one side and subdued yet colourful flowerbeds on the other. As bleak as the weather was, confirmed by the distinct lack of people at the water’s edge, we wandered the shoreline, taking in an array of waterbirds paddling around small craft tied near the bank.

Keen for more window shopping, streeling from window to window, this shop opened, this shop closed saw us separated and some heading up, by chance to the château above after a curiosity led them up an alleyway and stairs to the hillside behind the cottages. Next thing, the Château d'Annecy forecourt dominated the area with the entry gates to the side.

Built over different periods, the Château d'Annecy is built on the northern foot of the Semnoz Mountain, and as such stands guard over the southern part of Vieil Annecy, the Thoiu and the outlet of the lake. The Queen’s Tower (Tour de la Reine) built in the 12th century protected the southern and most exposed side of the château while the steep hillside the towers of 13th century Saint Pierre and the 16th century Saint Paul protected the Logis, the main residence of the castle. Facing the Lake Annecy, the 15th century Perrière Tower oversaw the threat from the water. The Château is now restored and serves the community as a museum.

After a cold and wet but interest morning window shopping, we returned to the hotel to check out and head off to our next destination, a six-hour drive away. After a short sojourn, enough to pack the car and hit the road, we were back to wet and cold conditions, five degrees and rain.

A minor issue was to follow. We set the navigation to the shortest route as usual but paid no attention thereafter. Within a few kilometres we were on the Motorway which was fine but were led along the French Motorway to Saint-Julien-en-Genevois, on the Swiss border where after being guided by the road signage to a side lane, were directed to stop. No toll booths here, only a male and female collector with money bags besides the road. Witches hats and barriers slowed us down and directed us straight into their path. Shane didn’t understand what was going on at first. He and the young toll collector could only communicate in gestures but after a while, and a grappling for licences and passports, it was communicated that they wanted money. We had Swiss Francs in the back but in the confusion forgot about them. He was satisfied with €40 so we paid him and were given a sticker and told to attach it to the windscreen.

The vignette is a Swiss road tax allowing motorists to travel their entire country albeit backroads or Motorway. Whichever you want. Sounds good and is probably much cheaper than Italy or France where it is distance based. We put the sticker on the windscreen as requested, pulled back onto the motorway and being guided by the GPS system, within two hundred metres left the Motorway for the lesser roads. Never to return again. Cheap at half the price, about €200 per kilometre.

The shortest route almost immediately caused us grief again. The quickest way seemed to be straight through the centre of Geneva. Crawling from traffic light to traffic light, through roadworks, trams and more traffic lights added considerable time to our trip. And constant rain. The first thirty kilometres in Switzerland, from Saint-Julien-en-Genevois to our next stop Crans-près-Céligny took an hour. Our six-hour journey wasn’t looking good. Interesting though.

Having experienced the very busy streets through Geneva, we then skirted around the western side of Lake Genève, a huge lake dotted with small villages along its shores. Time for a quick break, so at the first opportunity available, we pulled off of Route de Suisse and looked around lakeside a park near a small yacht club at Crans-près-Céligny.

Twenty minutes, maybe. Look at the shoreline, find a toilet and back in the car. We were getting hungry. Soon enough Route de Suisse morphed into Route de Genève. Hemmed in by the lake on the right, with few buildings fronting the water and hills on our left with frequent large mansions, it was not hard to imagine that at some time in the past, Route de Genève may not have existed and the mansions were positioned such that they were all overlooking the lake and the rolling hillsides down to their waterfronts below.

Three quarters of an hour had past by the time we pulled over for a feed. We ended up stopping at a small town called Cossonay which although pretty quiet, looked the goods. There wasn’t too much around but after walking the main thoroughfare a couple of times found this crazy pub, called the Crazy Pub, with football shirts scattered across the ceilings just down from the multistorey carpark up the hill.

When we walked in the place was deserted, except for the barman and a local. The first thing that stuck out was the football guernseys covering the ceiling. Quite a collection, not only the actual shirts but also the club t shirts that celebrated their particular victories. The other thing that stuck out was that although there was a menu, no one came near us and nothing was happening. So much so that we thought that no food was available. Jo fronted them up and we were told that tucker was on. As with last time we were in Switzerland, the menus were plain to say the least. Most uninviting but we had to eat. We ended up ordering burgers and pizza. Good traditional Swiss fare. Burgers cost 17CHF each and all adequate but nothing more.

Still taking the country roads, much to the peril of our arrival plans, we headed from Cossonay directly north for another thirty kilometre trip to the French border where we crossed at Creux.

On French soil again, French roads then took us further north towards the Rhine Valley and Alsace. On the way, we drove through canyons with clifftop fortresses on either side. Times from when the area was frontier. At one point driving into snow which got the kids excited, but not us. Skirting around Belfort, Mulhouse and Colmar, we eventually reached our destination, Ribeauvillé. Not far from our destination we called our host, Yannick who advised us to pull up in public parking to the rear of the apartment. It took a bit of finding but not too bad.

Once we arrived we left everything in the vehicle and headed to the apartment, and not a moment too soon. Our six hour journey took us a bit over eight. Not too bad with breaks. We were given a brief history of his family background, an overview of the area and then shown around.

After being left to our own devices, we returned to empty out the gear from the vehicle and dragged it up the stairs to the front door. It wasn’t far to the carpark and wasn’t a drama. Then we headed to look around while it was still light, get our bearings and think about tucker.
