6/6/18. With school finishing I may start posting. More for giving myself an opportunity to find a way to stay sharp at writing and as a way to gather my thoughts and record my memories. I’m weak for nostalgia. With photography, my favorite photos have always been the ones that take me back to that moment and the memories that come with that photo. This will be a way for me to record in writing the stories that accompany each photo, or just random bullshit thoughts at the time of writing. They’ll be something my friends and I can look back on one day. 

Inspired by Joey Lee’s work with The Chronicles and now his new project The Epilogues, I wanted to create something that allows me to document the stories and experiences of the world around me. Most coverage and feature blogs in the car scene I see are superficial, with a lack of personal connection or story telling. Every article seems to focus more on the mod list than anything else, and the human factor is severely lacking. Even though I’m not a good writer or a great photographer, I hope to be able to present a more passionate and personal perspective into the cars, culture, and people that I care about.

I figure a good way to start this whole thing is by introducing my friends. I don’t expect anyone to have the attention span to read this, but like I said, these are more for the purpose of putting a story and human aspect behind the photos.

This is Joon. I’d been acquainted with him for years, but didn’t really start hanging out with him on a frequent basis until the last 3 or so years. Back then we’d skate from time to time, but only because our two different friend groups accidentally stumbled upon each other at the park. All I knew was he was Joon, did stupid good 360 flips, and was into cars since an early age. It wasn’t until I really got into cars that we really got to know each other. To be honest (I hope Joon doesn’t read this) I had always looked up to him as that cool guy who skated well and had a manual car that he worked on himself and modified before anyone else had really gotten into cars. Once we started hanging out and the long nights hanging out in the garage started to accumulate, we really began to notice our similarities in aspirations, taste for cars, outlook on life etc. 

With his family running a small car dealership, he was around cars since an early age. From his first car, he quickly learned the ins and outs of flipping cars and soon found himself having owned many different cars by the time he was out of highscool. When I came to know him he had a G35 still, and being impressionable highschool students, his “high end” loud car was the coolest thing ever to everyone at school. 

Like many, Joon caught the track bug, and eventually sold his G35 to get into a humble NA8 Miata (because s2000′s and FD’s are just expensive Miata’s right, definitely not because we’re poor college students??) Today, that car is far different from when it landed in Joon’s hands. Having the pleasure of witnessing its transformation from stock to turbocharged and capable track weapon, I was able to really understand the kind of person Joon is. With his knowledge from being a shop hand at a local bodyshop, an endless supply of patience, an almost stubborn devotion to doing things “The right way” and refusal to take short cuts, he’s earned the title of Mr. Proper in our circle of friends. His Miata, while being a budget build, shows this work ethic, with every detail meticulously thought through and accounted for. Ensuring wiring that no one will ever see (including himself) is perfect and surpassing even factory standards of tidyness is just one example of these little details. With most people who call themselves “car enthusiasts” doing half-assed work solely to stand out and show off to their peers in the scene it’s incredibly refreshing to see someone, driven by passion and love for cars, building their car to satisfy their own dreams of their ideal machine. Joon is someone who builds cars for himself, and not for the validation of anyone else. Needless to say, he continues to be an inspiration and motivation to the way I work on my own cars as well as improving my own work ethic, and I’m glad to be able to call him a friend.
