Seeing Spaul’s confusion, Cobalt very quickly began trying to smooth out their feathers with their hands to fix their appearance a little. The last thing they wanted was to drive him away.

“No, no this is fine. Really. Come in.”

They opened the door a little wider to give Spaul room to step into the tiny shop. Most of the visible area was full of racks and shelves of various pillows and cushions. Today these racks had been pushed closer together than usual to make room for a massive stretch of fabric being sewn into a pillow next to one wall. There was a decently sized terrarium with a Light World spider beside the pillow in progress; this was covered up as soon as Spaul entered the shop, in case he was a bug pecker like everyone else here. The whole shop smelt strongly of NEO, particularly Spafnir and something adjacent.

The lack of a NEO form was incredibly disappointing to them, though it also raised many questions. They had met a few Spamtons now and all of them had NEO forms. Some of them used that form exclusively. So what was this supposed to mean?

“Not anymore? You mean you lost it? It’s not permanent? Did someone take it from you?” They seemed almost distressed by this, the feathers they had just smoothed down puffing up again. Even in their panic though they seemed to refuse to entertain the idea this could have happened willingly. Who would give that up?

As with most Addisons, talking about their products seemed to flip some kind of switch.

“Spafnir-feather pillows? You’re in luck! Exclusive! Won’t find them anywhere else in the city!! Live preview!!”

They lead Spaul over to a corner that was more strictly ordered than anything else in the shop. It was immaculately kept, with a perimeter that the mess was not allowed to seep into. In this corner were the body pillows, each of them with Spafnir plastered on them. Some were more tasteful and almost holy in their depiction, though a couple of the more suggestive ones still remained. Cobalt seemed very proud of these.

“100% Authentic Feathers inside!! Ethically sourced!! Just ask Spafnir Himself!! Soft! Comfortable!!! You will love it!! Alternative designs negotiable!!”

The spotlights from his eyes immediately brighten even further into floodlights, scanning the basement frantically. Trying to find the dark blue Addison he was worried about meeting in this form the most, given their beliefs. Zooming around when lights alone fail to find anything.

“You make a fair point there, they probably won’t kill you.” Neviah hands over the container to Cobalt. “It’s very much real and very much for you, this isn’t my work.” The color being wrong proves that, they wouldn’t purposely get it wrong.

“I’ll go about getting a bigger one as soon as I head back out and it’ll be brought immediately to your place. You’ll just have to keep it safe from Rayzor and the others until then.” It shouldn’t take anything to find a correctly sized terrarium for the spider with all the shops around, there’s a few other things such as substrate and a few decorations so it has enrichment, things it’ll need. But they’re already well aware Cobalt doesn’t mind money being spent for their sake.

Neviah puts their hands on their hips when food is mentioned. Ruh roh they nearly forgot eating is a thing.

“Ah yeah that-” Give them a moment, they’re thinking. “When I saved it I saw a few advertisements of someone mentioning selling bugs? With as many Addisons I saw there one might be selling bugs that come from the Light World? You’d have to check on your own, it’s near Cyber Fields. I don’t believe I’m currently welcome around those parts right now after saving your new friend here. It does prefer live food and won’t hunt anything dead or that doesn’t move so I highly advise you take a look.”

Like a great sphinx guarding the entrance to an ancient and sacred tomb, the creature lounges, languorous but alert, outside the maw of their umbrous den. With one forelimb crossed almost elegantly over the back of it's counterpart and both back legs tucked snuggly up underneath the voluminous, varicolored plumage which falls over their haunches like intricately tailored robes, they exude an aura of impertrubation, but not necessarily of docility.

As much becomes apperant when they catch the waft of an intruder.

Samael tips their head back, spindly neck scrunching up into an S shape which bobs up and down with the force of the ensuing call of warning they produce. A deafening series of clicks and pops which steadily increase in tempo, resounding like gunfire throughout the mountain range.

They're given pause, however, when they feel something brush against the sleek blades making up the imposing span of their kaleidoscopic wings.

"[A]!!!"

Whipping their head around, Samael comes beak to face with the source of the stink permeating their territory. Did this Addison just sneak up on them?

Why?

Samael flexes their wings and the hair-like threads clinging to them like spider-silk shimmer under the caress of the moonlight. This area has very little to offer in terms of strategic Ad-space, hardly worth a territorial scuffle. Whatever the case may be, the NEO snorts a puff of cold condensation in their general direction, a silent warning to bug off or risk the consequences.

Others might have expected as much from this particular Addison, but having pointedly ignored the finer details of the Cobalt murder case, Swatch didn’t recognize who was in front of them.

No matter, though. They hadn’t become head butler by going off at every little slight directed their way, and so Cobalt was met with the same reaction as every other Darkner who’d decided to try provoking them: a cool head and a cooler gaze that lay hidden behind their glasses.

Yes, that was a dig at disrespectful patrons. But no one could prove it.

There were big plans for today. It was time for the Quest For Bugs.

Cobalt had been a little too afraid to take Rayzor outside of Kowloon District lest Spafnir found them and took It back, but they couldn’t keep It in the shop forever. It deserved to see more of the world than their shop had to offer. A trip to the relatively distant Cyber Fields seemed safe enough.

They had made a couple preparations for this trip, the most notable being sewing together a Rayzor-sized hooded cape, to make it less recognisable as a NEO from above. They did not, however, prepare a leash or any other restraints, as afraid as they were of It zooming off. After the strings it just felt disrespectful, and they decided that if they successfully earnt Its respect, It would return to them. They also stuffed their inventory with cereal in case Rayzor got hungry.

Prepared and donning the cape on Rayzor (if It would allow), they opened the shop door, for the first time coaxing Rayzor to follow them out rather than desperately trying to keep It inside. Unleashing It into the rest of Kowloon District.

“I’m going to show You part of the world today. You need to see it. You need to see what one day should be rightfully Yours.”

Cobalt's lucky day indeed. It had been a hot minute since they last saw a new NEO. The last time had been an absolute disaster for them, so they went into this with the hope that things couldn't possibly go worse with this one. Each one was a new chance for things to go well. Unfortunately, they doubted the impression they would leave on the NEO would exactly be good.

They stood quietly on the street below for a moment, just observing the creature on the roof. They had never really taken the time to watch one before now, just going about its day, relaxing. It was almost peaceful.

The peace didn't last long, though, and they almost immediately returned to working out their usual plans. They didn't quite trust their ability to scale the building, not with only one hand clawed. That left the option of bringing the NEO down to them. Approaching the building it rested on, they cooed up at it loudly in a bid to get its attention.

Upon hearing Cobalt’s cooing, the NEO swiveled its head to look down at them – and instantly indicated that the Addison might need to reconsider their approach. Instead of a pointy nose and wide mouth, this creature had nothing more than a flickering mass of white pixels that didn’t even try to suggest the shape of a face. But maybe that was just a continuation of Cobalt’s luck? After all, no mouth meant no sharp teeth to have to contend with.

Fluffing itself up, the NEO dragged itself further to the edge of the roof, almost looking like it was about to fall off, and produced the Windows chimes in response.

Well, Cobalt had its attention. There was no turning back now.
