MARIYA ALYEKSANDROVNA
Grand Duchess of Russia
(born 1853 - died 1920)
pictured above is a portrait of the Grand Duchess of Russia, painted by Gustav Richter in 1874
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
MARIYA was born in 1853 at Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, during the reign of her grandfather Nikolay I, Emperor of all Russia.
She was the second daughter of Alyeksandr Nikolayevich, Tsesarevich of Russia, and Mariya Alyeksandrovna, a birth Princess of Hesse and by Rhine.
So, she was a member of the House of Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov, a branch of the HOUSE OF ROMANOV.
Following Russian tradition, she was named MARIYA ALYEKSANDROVNA, meaning Mariya, daughter of Alyeksandr.
As a granddaughter of the Russian Emperor in the male line, when she was born, she received the courtesy title of GRAND DUCHESS OF RUSSIA.
In 1885, before her second birthday, her grandfather died, and her father succeeded as Alyeksandr II, Emperor of all Russia.
Because her mother was a Hessian Royal, she often went to Hesse to visit relatives. And, in one of those visits, she met Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, falling in love with him.
However, her parents did not wish for her to marry a British and tried for years to prevent her from marrying him, focusing on finding other matches to her.
Years later, her parents finally gave in. And, in 1874, after many negotiations, she married ALFRED ERNEST ALBERT, DUKE OF EDINBURGH. Her husband was the second son of the late Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom. She was 20 years old, while her husband was 29. With him, she had six children.
Check my posts about her ROYAL WEDDING and on her HUSBAND!
The only Romanov to ever marry into the British Royal Family, after her wedding, she took the titles of her husband, becoming the DUCHESS OF EDINBURGH, COUNTESS OF ULSTER, and COUNTESS OF KENT.
At the beginning of her marriage, she tried to live in England but had many disagreements with her mother-in-law and never really liked the United Kingdom. So, she took every opportunity to stay away from there.
Throughout the 1880s, she traveled several times to Russia to attend the funerals of her parents and the coronation of her brother. Her father, having died in 1881, was succeeded by her brother as Emperor Alyeksandr III.
As her husband was a naval officer and was in the line of succession to the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, she also spent a lot of time in Malta and in Coburg.
And, when her husband succeeded as Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1893, she moved permanently with her family to Coburg, as the new DUCHESS OF SAXE-COBURGH AND GOTHA. At that time, she was almost 40 years old.
Meanwhile, in Russia, by 1894, her brother died and was succeeded by her nephew as Emperor Nikolay II. Whom, she also attended the coronation alongside her husband and children.
By early 1899, her only surviving son Alfred, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, tragically died at the age of 24.
pictured above is a portrait of the Duchess of Edinburgh with her baby son (Prince Alfred) and husband, photographed by Hills & Saunders in 1875
Following the death of her son, her marriage deteriorated even more, ending a year later, with the death of her husband in mid-1900. Leaving her widowed at the age of 47.
Since she and her husband did not have any other surviving sons, the Duchy was inherited by a nephew of her late husband, the Duke of Albany, who acceded as Carl Eduard, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
Nonetheless, the new Duke allowed her to keep her residence in Coburg as a DOWAGER DUCHESS OF SAXE-COBURG AND GOTHA.
Although her husband was dead, she continued to be a part of the British Royal Family, attending funerals and coronations.
Between 1900-10, the United Kingdom had three Monarchs: her mother-in-law, Queen Victoria, who died in 1901; her brother-in-law King Edward VII, who died in 1910; and the nephew of her late husband, King George V.
During World War I, she was forced to leave Coburg due to her Russian connections and moved to Bavaria. Even though she supported the Germans and not Russia.
Furthermore, during the Russian Revolution, her nephew Emperor Nikolay II was dethroned, the Russian Empire was abolished, and she lost many of her relatives.
Besides, she also lost her fortune that was held in trust in Russia. And, by the end of her life, she had to sell many of her jewels to pay her bills.
Living in exile in Zurich, Switzerland, the Dowager Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha died at the age of 67, in 1920.

Through her eldest daughter, Princess Marie of Edinburgh, a Queen Consort of Romania, she was grandmother of three European Monarchs:
Carol II, King of Romania - reigned between 1930-40;
Princess Elisabeta of Romania - Queen Consort of the Hellenes as the wife of King Geórgios II; and
Princess Maria of Romania - Queen Consort of Yugoslavia as the wife of King Alyeksandar I.
