Okay, I fudged some tests here—there's a lot of fluctuation in the numbers in real time. But it seems like the tools I'm using to read out power data line up with each other well enough to assume they're somewhat accurate, and it also seems like:

This chip's efficiency is fairly impressive, as advertised. 40 or so watts of power draw, not including the display, to render the game I normally play in what I would consider fully playable settings/resolution/frame rate, through a translation out of its native processor architecture, is quite good.

This cooling solution is... wild? I literally can't hear it unless I put my ear between an inch and an inch and a half from the keyboard when it's dissipating, I am forced to assume, about 40 watts (~1500-1650rpm on the fans).

Combining those two points: I wish I'd put a power meter on the Lenovo gaming laptop I had my hands on a while ago while running a similar workload. If I recall correctly, I had GW2 locked to 30 fps, with everything else very similar, and there was enough fan noise that I would not want to hold a conversation. That's far enough off from these results to make me suspect a problem with my methodology; I know that device has a generally above-average cooling solution for a device that's thicker and 20% heavier.

The power draw of this display in its full, eye-searing HDR brightness can get up to a significant chunk of the total system power even when running a significantly heavier workload than I ever run.

Notably, performance laptops these days generally have 90-100 watt-hour batteries, and a) one can thus work out the battery runtime of these workloads with some simple arithmetic, and b) one can also work out the power draw of a laptop only knowing its battery runtime. Jarrod's Tech does run gaming laptop battery tests with an actual game up, and they tend to be 1-2 hours; this means the better ones are pulling 50 watts or so, which is similar to the numbers I'm seeing here. That makes very little sense, though, considering they're much louder and less efficient? Again, there are discrepancies here large enough to make me doubt some of my methods.

Anyway, it does wind up being true that, in this particular case, yes, the Macbook Pro 16 really does kind of work as a gaming laptop (not compared to similarly-priced devices, necessarily, but just in a vacuum as an experience). It doesn't seem to have paradigm-breaking battery life while playing a game, but it does have excellent noise levels when doing so and excellent performance when on battery (as it doesn't drop at all). The pricing is still a nonstarter, but hey, the new Zephyrus G16 (closest competitor I can think off the top of my head) is pretty overpriced too; if you want one device that does it all, maybe you can justify it.

Except, crucially, that in my particular case I'm only interested if I'm able to run community-made gw2 addons... that are not compatible with this setup. And if one played a different game, it might be newer, be less-suited to these virtualization/translation methods, and not perform well enough for that to be the case. So close, and yet so far.
