Coffee, Cacao, and Culture
The Solo Scale: Other than a small part at the end where you sit down to drink and eat, you’re in a larger group the whole time. You may end up making a new friend in the sugar cane portion or when you’re sampling the food and drink after, but you can still stick to yourself if you don’t want to. Spend your time learning and enjoying, however you like! In Monteverde, there are so many…

Coffee Tour at Doka Farm
In the morning I was treated to a very early, very cold shower in temperatures that were definitely not the 30 degrees of Jaco! I packed my day bag quietly for my tour and then sat in the main living room where there was a little cat curled up asleep that I must not have noticed last night. The driver was right on time for pick up and I was the first person so had my pick of the seats, although he asked me to sit right behind him. I sat there until we arrived at the next hotel for pick up but it was too cold and windy there to do it all day! It was cool to see the city of San Jose wake up and come alive at 6am as we drove through the streets to pick up all the tour participants. Everyone walking around was carrying an umbrella – it was a 100% chance of rain today, and they seem to trust the forecast! One queue at a bus stop ran all the way down the street, around the corner and down the next street, it was organized mayhem! Our driver introduced himself as our tour guide Max who had his first coffee at 6 months old. He told us that the traffic is crazy in San Jose because 2 million people visit everyday but luckily we were heading out the opposite direction. Once everyone was picked up, our last folks were picked up from an airport hotel, Max gave us the itinerary break down for the day. We’d be spending it in the Alajuela province which is famous for its mango which is unfortunately not in season! Our day began with a visit to Doka coffee farm owned by the Vargas family at 5000 feet. On the drive us Max gave us all the facts about Costa Rican coffee – it’s Arabica only, 95% of Costa Rican coffee is exported to other countries, coffee grown at 3000 feet tastes like citrus and coffee grown at 6000 feet tastes like sweet fruits. Max also told us about how he gets woken up at 4am everyday by his 2 cats Catalina and Nutella – one cat has another house though. As we drove further up into the coffee plantations Max explained how coffee productions is one of the biggest industries for migrant workers from Nicaragua. 200,000 Nicas work in coffee plantations in Costa Rica, another 200,000 work in banana plantations, and 200,000 more in pineapple plantations. These migrants get around $20 a day, which is much better than the $4 a day they would get in agricultural work in their home country just across the border. They are also given housing as part of their employment since they do the work that Costa Ricans are unwilling to do. At the Doka coffee farm, we started with our buffet breakfast where I finally tried gallo pinto on my last full day in Central America! I also piled up my plate with fried plantains, sausage slices, a tortilla and some fruit. They had 3 black coffees on offer, made from their own coffee beans. The standout was the Peaberry which I ended up buying a bag of to take home with me.
Max took us on a tour around the plantation, we first saw the peeling machine that has worked for 160 years without electricity and Max explained how the coffee harvest is synced with the school year so that the teenagers can also come to help pick the cherries when all hands on deck are needed. A sack of Costa Rican green coffee beans, washed, peeled and dried, goes for about $300 but up to $4000. In comparison the average price of a sack of Brazilian robusta beans fetches $100 meanwhile the most expensive sack is a geisha tree specialty from Panama which sold for $200,000. The peaberry is also more expensive as it’s a perfectly formed seed but smaller than average, they need to be handpicked out of the regular seeds. Max explained that the sweetest coffee is grown at the higher altitudes, but the honey process can also lead to sweeter coffee. The honey process involves leaving the greasy layer on the beans rather than letting them ferment to wash it off. When it dries, the honey process will take 12 days to dry the greasy layer too whereas the fermented beans would only take 5 days. The beans are all dumped outside in the sun to dry, with the workers walking through the beans with a rake to move them around for even-drying. After the tour we were led purposefully to the gift shop where I purchased the peabery blend for just $9 as well as some chocolate coated coffee beans for Alanna. We then piled back into the van to our next destination - the Poas volcano.

March 29, 2023 Monteverde, Costa Rica
Little airports are the best. Our departure was, of course, by boat with six other people checking out. On landing to transfer to a van to the airport, the staff had water and towels at the ready to wipe off our sandy feet. Yay. The same bumpy ride to the tiny airport, check-in with weighing (bags, plus each of us), a short wait and we were off in another 12-seater. The flight was great – more viewing of the terrain, even if the wind made for a white knuckle landing. The plane was early – why wait if everyone is there already and the plane is ready to go. Thankfully, our Greenspot transport-guide was there already and off we went with him and a driver. The road headed out of town was not particularly scenic, but the fruit and veggie stands were fascinating. Further out of town it got more scenic. Olgar, the guide, was a bit difficult to understand, but quite knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the trees and other foliage! The drive – about three hours in total – was most interesting as we started uphill. The air started to change and the wind picked up. After being moist for over 1 ½ weeks (read moist as the range of slight perspiration to rivers of sweat!!), this is ever so refreshing! The higher we got, the cooler. No humidity. Ahhhhhhh. The views too, toward the Colorado Gulf out to the Pacific are lovely. But nothing beats the view from our room (more on that shortly). The hotel greeting was warm and friendly, with a refreshing sugar cane drink. Our room wasn’t ready so we headed downtown, a bit confused by the info we had received from Irene (our Costa Rica tour organizer from GreenSpot) and what Olgar had told us (minimal) about the coming days. We stopped for a delish lunch at a chocolate café (ok, yes, we had to have desert) where we reached out to Irene via WhatsApp (the world outside the US, it seems, is all WhatsApp all the time). And finally we connected with Oscar, who will be our guide for the next two days. OMG – he’s great, and made any angst over what was going on dissipate within minutes. We coordinated on our schedule, added a few things of interest, got a bunch of info, and he drove us back uphill (“everything in Montaverde is uphill”) to the Hotel Senda.
This resort hotel is a wonderful surprise. It’s really a quite extensive compound with duplex cottages tucked into the landscape – a mountainous version of the Copa. Some look out onto lovely foliage; our room and balcony thankfully have a panoramic view to the Colorado Gulf, wonderful space inside and a beautiful bathroom. Spoiled again. We wandered around a bit exploring the grounds and spotted a few strange unidentified rodent/squirrel kind of creatures, running around and then munching on something dropped from a bush. The landscaping is beautiful, with nature paths and a coffee plantation on the property. Love this place!
We stayed at the hotel for dinner. First a glass of wine on our balcony while FaceTime-ing with Janet and blogging. The sun went down over an adjacent hill rather than directly in front of us, and the red/orange glow on the horizon after it went down was stunning. This, to the sound of the wild wind in lieu of the crashing surf. Dinner was really good, the most amazing part being the vegetarian ceviche appetizer. OMG – must try this at home! Ever since Olgar had told us that his son is a bartender at our hotel, Jill has asked several staff at the Senda bar/restaurant area if they’re Olgar’s son. They all looked at her as if she had three heads. Sebbie discouraged her from continuing this quest and then, as fate would have it, Gabriel, our server at dinner, asked if we were the ones who arrived with his father! Victory! The funniest part was Jillebob then finding at least one of the folks who had given her a blank stare to convince him that she wasn’t nuts. Back to the toasty warm room (it got cold out there!) and to bed….

You can reserve now and pay later, with cancellation up to 24 hours in advance to receive a full refund. Choose your favorite tours here and secure your booking! All of these tours include air conditioned transport with hotel pick up and drop off, certified guides and sometimes also lunch and the entrance fees. So don’t wait with booking until you get to Costa Rica. Because of Costa Rica’s popularity it is highly recommended to book your tours in advance as it is likely that tours sell out. During most of these tours you will combine a few locations on one day so you can see the diversity that Costa Rica has to offer. It’s like a microcosm of Costa Rica itself, and is indeed a point of convergence for the many cultures as well as different types of flora and fauna found all across the country. If you want to explore the best of Costa Rica, then it is highly recommended to book a tour. So be it for surfing, backpacking, culture crashing, or just nature touring, Puerto Viejo is the place to be. You can also opt to get a bus from Caribe Station to Limon, and from there to Puerto Viejo, as many locals choose to do. Be extra careful to get on a bus labeled Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, not de Sarapiqui, lest you be whisked to a different part of the country. The most typical route is via a four hour bus ride from San Jose’s Caribe Station. You can even walk south from Cahuita along the beach and enjoy the sights while on your way. Only 11 miles or 18 kilometers from Cahuita, a bus ride through Highway 36 can easily get you there. For a more adrenaline-rushing activity, you can go for river rafting classes. You can even rent a bike and see all the sights at your own pace. Touring Puerto Viejo de Talamanca can bring you through the Indian Reserve, Iguana Reserve, and even the Refugio de gandoca de Manzanillo – the most exotic area along the coast of the south Caribbean and a natural adventure not to be missed. But since the area is a meeting point of varied cultures as well as wildlife, tours can also be great adventures in Puerto Viejo. The beaches at Playa Cocles, Punta Uva, and Playa Chiquita are all-around blockbusters. Puerto Viejo’s white-sand beaches are exotic paradise to tourists, and the waves that break onto the coast are ideal for surfing. It’s perfect for laying back and enjoying the sights, sounds, and tastes of Costa Rica. A history of mixed cultures and belated introduction to modern conveniences makes Puerto Viejo the mixture of modern beach town and isolated indigenous habitat that it is. Native American traditions are also deeply rooted in the area, as indigenous populations and reserves are scattered everywhere. The mix of Afro-Caribbean, tico and hippyesque counterculture, and Bribri Indian culture is an experience of its own. Puerto Viejo is not just a beautiful place with white-sand beaches and exotic flora and fauna, it is also a melting point of several Costa Rican cultural influences.
#PUERTO VIEJO COSTA RICA BEACHES PLUS#
The area is undoubtedly perfect for surfing and adventure, plus two wondrous National Parks are nearby – Cahuita and Manzanillo. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is fast becoming more than a tourist spot, but a place for foreigners to buy and build. Surfers and backpackers all know Puerto Viejo, a small coastal town in the province of Limon, in Caribbean Costa Rica.

We have a blog with more in depth information for each topic, if you want to read it let me know!

Pura Vida Adventures: A True Story About a Day in the Life
Tumblr media
Many people here are true odd-balls. We assumed that we would stick out like two sore thumbs in this small, rural community --  that the people would think we were super weird with our grungy-unabashed hippie gayness -- but we were kind of wrong. People don’t judge us or find us weird because everybody is a rare creature in this community. They are mega hipsters (the Latin American version) without even knowing they’re cool. The most memorable and interesting person we’ve met yet appeared in our life about two weeks ago. He is an extraordinary coffee farmer and tinkerer from Northern Costa Rica named Manuel (pictured above, left). He had been referenced to us several times by our helpful neighbor, Don Juan (pictured above, right), as “the ariete man.” Arietes are amazing old-fashioned machines that use a series of hoses and tubing to redirect natural sources of water to wherever it is needed, often pumping it hundreds of meters up a mountain, all without using any electricity. They told us that he could help us become water self-sufficient, but they did not tell us what a cartoon character he is…
Last week, we went to visit Manuel’s farm, which is close to ours and we arrived to find that his driveway consists of miles of rocky road carved into the side of a mountain. Thankfully our newly-acquired vehicle is 4x4 and just high enough off the ground to handle this boulderous and uneven terrain.  As we bounced along in our Tracker, we tried not to acknowledge how utterly impossible it would be to turn back should the need arise...and just enjoy the beautiful scenery of La Amistad National Forest and Volcan Baru in the distance. Our grandpa-neighbor Juan was chillin’ in the backseat verbally processing the crazy ride we were on.
When driving or riding in buses it’s always reassuring to have locals around because they are accustomed to the insanity of the road conditions. They are a thermostat for actual danger on the road.
When we pulled up to the main gate of Manuel’s 500 acre farm, we waited for a while, unsure if he was even aware that we were there. We took the time to check and make sure nothing broke off of the car on the journey, but within minutes he appeared on his moto to let us in. We could feel the buzz of energy and excitement immediately. Manuel was JAZZED to show us his farm. From those first moments we knew that this tour was going to be a way bigger thing than we had anticipated waking up that Sunday morning. He started by showing us his coffee drying area. The harsh midday sun was beaming down and glaring off of ten or more giant wooden-framed boxes covered in fabric and filled with drying coffee cherries. There he literally screamed from the mountaintop about his passion for growing coffee and using the four elements of nature to run his plantation -- earth, water, wind and sun. The intense energy radiating from the sun and Manuel’s spirit made for an abrasive but fascinating start to the experience. After that we drove through pathways lined with luscious vetiver to Manuel’s work shed to learn about the innovative technology he worked with. His shed was dark and cluttered with all kinds of machine components and other odds and ends. Even inside that small space, standing only inches away from each other, Manuel’s surprisingly high-pitched voice ranged from loud to louder as he explained in great detail the different types of arietes he has utilized to irrigate his entire property. He has three different pumps made from 50-year-old parts that he somehow acquired from Germany and England.
We still have a lot of questions - probably always will...
After that, we took a lunch stop at his house, as is customary whenever a Tico family invites you to their farm. We were seated at a small booth table with a white tablecloth outside of a wonky-looking little cabin. Through the open windows we could see that the house was not much different inside than his eclectic work sheds. Outside there were various plants and succulents suspended from the awning in planters made from old, plastic soda bottles and jugs. Everything was adorably handcrafted  from reused and repurposed materials. There were also a few awkwardly quiet young men staring off into space on the porch who never spoke to us and were never introduced. Manuel’s wife promptly popped out of the house with fresh-squeezed lemonade and lunged down three hilariously oversized concrete steps at the front door to serve it to us. We looked at each other and giggled because at this point we felt like we were straight-up trippin’. Everything was so overwhelming and funny. Our hosts did not eat with us. While Manuel’s wife waited on us like a pro, he was busy showing us fancy framed photos of himself on huge horses and rattling off stories at 1000 words per minute.
After lunch the tour resumed. Manuel guided us on a 300 meter descent into the jungle at the edge of the pasture. He told us to be careful as we climbed down the steep slope to the river where he basically said that the temperature would suddenly drop and that we could fall off the edge to our death at any moment. As we neared the bottom, the rhythmic sound of the pumps got louder and louder. He had built a series of concrete tanks and used various hoses and pipes to store and redirect the water from the stream into the ariete which would pump aka “shoot” the water hundreds of meters back up the mountain. As he showed us the first ariete, we realized that it functions like a heart. Using only the momentum and pressure that gravity lends, it continuously pumps water up from the ravine back up to the top of the property so that it can be distributed throughout the farm. Every time we thought we had seen everything, he would take us further in our descent. We wish we had pictures to show because there is not enough time to describe all the crazy mechanisms he had crafted down there. At one point we found ourselves scaling down a ledge on a narrow, vertical hand-made ladder of rebar with the river flowing below us. We nervously watched as our 80 year old friend, Juan followed us down the ladder without hesitation. Every step of the way, Manuel was telling us so many random stories in high-speed Spanish we could not keep up with what was going on. It was endearing at first, but he never stopped. Eventually it became stressful and we wondered if he would even have a voice the next day…
The final stop on the river was a breathtakingly beautiful jungle spot. There he showed us the last ariete (which supplied water to his house) and also a giant rock with an impossibly flat underside that he said was an ancient, overturned sacrificial table made by the indigenous people long ago. Considering that this area of Costa Rica has more indigenous people and artifacts than any other region, we believe him.
He told us that he never goes to that area too late in the afternoon because one time he did, and a spirit appeared and violently shook all the trees as if an earthquake was happening yet no rocks were moving, making it clear that he was not welcomed there at that moment. At that point we thought surely the tour was over (it was definitely the climax), but about an hour later we found ourselves at the top of the mountain about to pass out from being talked at all day. We didn’t want to be rude, but we simply could not take any more talking--we HAD to get out. Manuel was not picking up on our body language either. As we got in our car we shook hands, expressed deep gratitude for his time and energy and made plans for him to come assess the natural water sources on our farm so that we could implement an ariete here also! A week later he showed up at our farm (of course with no warning) to check it out, and hopefully by next month we will be using all of our own water for our house and the farm!
This is just an extreme example of the type of crazy adventure we have to be prepared to roll with on almost any given day down here. It may not be what we had in mind for the day, it may be exhausting and overwhelming...but the payoff in knowledge, friendships and sweet perks is always more than worth it.

February 8th, 2020 - Jason and i woke up in this great rain forest in this cottage like hotel. The lady was cooking breakfast for us. Yummy. Eggs, rice, and fruit and great coffee. They teach cooking at this sanctuary and give a tour of the coffee plantation. We were a bit late for the tour but we joined the tour that had just started. Christopher Sanchez, the lady’s son, turned out to be a master coffee grower. He gave us an exceptional tour of the organic coffee plantation. And it came with history of coffee beans and growing in Costa Rica and the America’s. His passion is growing coffee and he will be at the Portland Coffee Convention in April 2020. Also on the tour were two employees from Air B&B, and a family from Ohio. We had good conversation and inter-action with the other attendees. We left for Liberia. Stopped at the restaurant on the hill and had fruit smoothies. We arrived in Liberia and went to our favorite Mexican restaurant. Then we went back to our Hotel. Another great day!
