Coffee, Cacao, and Culture
The Solo Scale: Other than a small part at the end where you sit down to drink and eat, you’re in a larger group the whole time. You may end up making a new friend in the sugar cane portion or when you’re sampling the food and drink after, but you can still stick to yourself if you don’t want to. Spend your time learning and enjoying, however you like! In Monteverde, there are so many…

Monteverde to La Fortuna
After our cloud forest tour, we returned to the main town of Monteverde for some lunch and shopping before we departed for La Fortuna. Tyrza and I went for a coffee at Orchid café where I also had French toast. It had started raining again so we went souvenir shopping hopping from shop to shop to keep dry. There was an at gallery featuring the work of a local artist called Ferlander Arguedas who seemed to love bright colours and Costa Rican animals – I ended up buying a bold sloth tshirt to add to my collection of souvenirs! We picked up some cheaper chocolate at the supermarket and then rode with Danilo our driver to Rio Chaquito. Part of the way there we stopped for a bathroom break and ice creams and had to wait for Charlie who selfishly ordered food again to hold us up. We passed some filthy windmills and finally we reached La Fortuna – the largest lake in Costa Rica measuring about 64km2. As we got off the bus and gathered our belongings to transfer on to the boat I realised I had lost the brand new umbrella I’d only bought yesterday. I must have left it hanging on the back of the chair while waiting for the bus. The boat ride was great until the rudder or something broke off the boat and there was a rush to fix it. It was repaired before we could panic too much though, and soon we had reached our destination and were riding with Luis to our hotel. Dennis gave us a briefing and then handed out all of our room keys. I had a lie down and unpacked a bit then headed out for booking our La Fortuna activities and to have dinner. We were led down the street to the partner tour company who sat us down for basically a long sales pitch about all of their activities. It was very overpriced in my opinion, they were charging more for stand up paddleboarding than I’d paid in Frisco in the United States a couple months earlier. I booked the rafting trip because we really needed the entire group to do it so that it worked out with our transportation onward to San Jose, but then I just used their wifi to book a tour of Mistico Park on Trip Advisor that was cheaper than their tour and departed earlier. Tyrza decided to join me on my trip in going early and hopefully getting a clear view and beating the rain! Our group went out for dinner at Nunka, a restaurant where apparently Dennis would get a kickback from bringing us there. We all paid full price on our expensive (and small) meals and he got a free strip steak for bringing the customers in. I’d chosen the Pollo Cahuita which was nice but again, very overpriced for the size and served with an expensive Mai Tai. Costa Rica definitely considers itself to be first world in price but you still can’t flush the toilet paper!

March 29, 2023 Monteverde, Costa Rica
Little airports are the best. Our departure was, of course, by boat with six other people checking out. On landing to transfer to a van to the airport, the staff had water and towels at the ready to wipe off our sandy feet. Yay. The same bumpy ride to the tiny airport, check-in with weighing (bags, plus each of us), a short wait and we were off in another 12-seater. The flight was great – more viewing of the terrain, even if the wind made for a white knuckle landing. The plane was early – why wait if everyone is there already and the plane is ready to go. Thankfully, our Greenspot transport-guide was there already and off we went with him and a driver. The road headed out of town was not particularly scenic, but the fruit and veggie stands were fascinating. Further out of town it got more scenic. Olgar, the guide, was a bit difficult to understand, but quite knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the trees and other foliage! The drive – about three hours in total – was most interesting as we started uphill. The air started to change and the wind picked up. After being moist for over 1 ½ weeks (read moist as the range of slight perspiration to rivers of sweat!!), this is ever so refreshing! The higher we got, the cooler. No humidity. Ahhhhhhh. The views too, toward the Colorado Gulf out to the Pacific are lovely. But nothing beats the view from our room (more on that shortly). The hotel greeting was warm and friendly, with a refreshing sugar cane drink. Our room wasn’t ready so we headed downtown, a bit confused by the info we had received from Irene (our Costa Rica tour organizer from GreenSpot) and what Olgar had told us (minimal) about the coming days. We stopped for a delish lunch at a chocolate café (ok, yes, we had to have desert) where we reached out to Irene via WhatsApp (the world outside the US, it seems, is all WhatsApp all the time). And finally we connected with Oscar, who will be our guide for the next two days. OMG – he’s great, and made any angst over what was going on dissipate within minutes. We coordinated on our schedule, added a few things of interest, got a bunch of info, and he drove us back uphill (“everything in Montaverde is uphill”) to the Hotel Senda.
This resort hotel is a wonderful surprise. It’s really a quite extensive compound with duplex cottages tucked into the landscape – a mountainous version of the Copa. Some look out onto lovely foliage; our room and balcony thankfully have a panoramic view to the Colorado Gulf, wonderful space inside and a beautiful bathroom. Spoiled again. We wandered around a bit exploring the grounds and spotted a few strange unidentified rodent/squirrel kind of creatures, running around and then munching on something dropped from a bush. The landscaping is beautiful, with nature paths and a coffee plantation on the property. Love this place!
We stayed at the hotel for dinner. First a glass of wine on our balcony while FaceTime-ing with Janet and blogging. The sun went down over an adjacent hill rather than directly in front of us, and the red/orange glow on the horizon after it went down was stunning. This, to the sound of the wild wind in lieu of the crashing surf. Dinner was really good, the most amazing part being the vegetarian ceviche appetizer. OMG – must try this at home! Ever since Olgar had told us that his son is a bartender at our hotel, Jill has asked several staff at the Senda bar/restaurant area if they’re Olgar’s son. They all looked at her as if she had three heads. Sebbie discouraged her from continuing this quest and then, as fate would have it, Gabriel, our server at dinner, asked if we were the ones who arrived with his father! Victory! The funniest part was Jillebob then finding at least one of the folks who had given her a blank stare to convince him that she wasn’t nuts. Back to the toasty warm room (it got cold out there!) and to bed….

Corcovado National Park, located on the Osa Peninsula, is a dream for nature lovers. From jaguars to scarlet macaws, the diversity here is breathtaking. Though it’s less visited compared to other national parks, it offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness wildlife in its natural habitat.
3. Relax on the Secluded Beaches of Uvita
- Why Uvita Stands Out: Known for the unique Whale Tail formation, Uvita is a quiet beach town that remains a hidden paradise.
- Hidden Gem: Visit during whale watching season to witness humpback whales making their annual migration.
Uvita offers more than just picturesque beaches; it’s a great destination for those seeking peace away from the crowded shores of Costa Rica’s more popular beaches. The nearby Marino Ballena National Park offers excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities, making it a perfect destination for marine lovers.
4. Visit the Lesser-Known Tapanti National Park
- Why Visit: This park remains under the radar for most tourists, but it offers lush forests, waterfalls, and excellent birdwatching.
- Hidden Gem: The Orosi Valley, located near the park, offers hot springs and coffee plantations that make for an unforgettable experience.
While Tapanti might not be as famous as Monteverde or Arenal, it’s a fantastic spot for hiking and exploring the untouched wilderness. The park’s dense cloud forest is home to over 400 species of birds, making it a birdwatcher’s haven.
5. Wander Through the Coffee Fields of Turrialba
- Why It’s Special: Turrialba is a small town known for its rich coffee plantations and volcanic activity.
- Hidden Gem: Most travelers miss the chance to explore the archaeological site of Guayabo, Costa Rica’s most significant pre-Columbian ruin.
For coffee lovers, Turrialba provides the perfect opportunity to tour local coffee farms and taste freshly brewed cups. Pair this with a visit to the active Turrialba Volcano and the historic ruins of Guayabo for an educational and awe-inspiring day trip.

Rincón de la Vieja National Park offers a wide variety of experiences for outdoor enthusiasts, from hiking to waterfalls to soaking in geothermal hot springs. The volcanic activity in the region creates an otherworldly landscape that is perfect for exploration.
7. Hike the Trails of Los Quetzales National Park
- Why It’s a Hidden Gem: Despite being one of Costa Rica’s newer national parks, Los Quetzales is teeming with wildlife and fewer crowds.
- Hidden Gem: It’s one of the best places to spot the elusive resplendent quetzal bird, known for its stunning emerald plumage.
Los Quetzales National Park is a haven for birdwatchers, and its cloud forests provide the perfect environment for a variety of flora and fauna. Though relatively unknown, the park offers solitude and an abundance of natural beauty.

Thursday November 23 / 2023
This morning, we visited a hummingbird gallery. We saw 5 different ones on arrival. They are beautiful birds. The one with a purple chest was a little bigger than the others and very hard to photograph, because it moved so fast.
Then we went to a woman’s art cooperative and crafts shop. I got an almond milk latte from the coffee shop next door.
At 10:00 am, we visited the Bat Jungle. It was very educational. I enjoyed the talk, and it was nice to recognize each different species on the walk through. There was a hummingbat that behaved exactly like a hummingbird. Then we met a Canadian gentleman that runs the chocolate making tour and operates the Bat jungle coffee shop. He was previously executive director of the Monteverde preserve.
The Butterfly garden wasn’t as exciting as I expected. We walked through the gardens, but they did not have very many butterflies.
We went up in the sky, above the trees through the clouds on a tram.
It was very windy and wet but beautiful! We saw another coati (raccoon) and 3 black vultures.
Before we went to the orchid garden, we checked in to our cabin. Our 2 levelled cabin with kitchenette was sitting among the trees. We had a gorgeous view from our bedroom window.
We had a very educational tour at the orchid garden. There were 500 different species of orchid with about 150 of them in bloom at different times. So visitors could always see orchid flowers. I learned that vanilla is an orchid. This fragile orchid flower blooms once a year and lasts for only 3 hours. Isn’t that something!
We had dinner at the treehouse restaurant. They built a 3 story restaurant around the exposed giant tree in the middle.
Another night walk was scheduled for 6:30 pm. As we were driving to the location, an Armadillo was crossing the road that we had to stop for in order to avoid hitting it. On the night hike, we saw spiders, Scorpions, and tarantulas. We also saw several sleeping birds and a sloth. There was a green ring of algae around its neck. Most interesting, we spotted a species of kinkajou (another kind of raccoon) eating fruit high in a tree. It looked like it was a monkey or a cat!

Exciting Things to do in Costa Rica with Your Kids
Tumblr media
Costa Rica is replete with many exciting family adventures that range from spotting beautiful animals on a mangrove tour, taking surfing lessons, seeing the majestic waterfalls, and tasting chocolate and coffee. You can look for Costa Rica vacation packages for a family that include these activities. Let us explore more about this.
Coffee or Chocolate Tour
You can book a chocolate or coffee tour. Many facilities grow a wide variety of fruits and spices plus coffee and chocolate. It can be a wonderful experience to taste the delicious flavors of Costa Rica right off of the trees and also see how some of your favorite flavors taste. So make sure your Costa Rica vacation packages for family includes a coffee or chocolate tour.
Mangrove Boat Tour
This is an easy way to see birds and wildlife while learning about important protected waterways in Costa Rica. Your kids will be extremely happy to spot white-faced capuchin monkeys, various species of birds, and even a crocodile, depending on the area of the country you are visiting. You may even opt for a kayak tour instead of a boat if you want an adventurous experience.
Visiting the Hanging Bridges
This could be an excellent way to experience the rainforest up close. It is suggested that you hire a guide who can point out the wildlife to provide a better view through a viewing scope when visiting the Mistico Hanging Bridges outside of La Fortuna in the Arenal Area. This will provide your kids with plenty of opportunities to spot interesting wildlife, check out stunning waterfalls, and cross amazing hanging bridges. One of the major highlights is spotting the various species of colorful butterflies.
Ziplining on Canopy Tours
Adventurous travelers can opt for canopy tours and ziplining. This is a must-do activity. You can visit an adventure park in Dlamonet, like Buena Vista del Rincon, in Guanacaste. You can visit the hanging bridges, get involved in horseback riding, see amazing wildlife, and relax in hot springs. You can zipline over the upper canopy of the rainforest to have a bird’s eye view of the beautiful world below.
Waterfall Tour
Costa Rica is a haven of photogenic waterfalls. You can take a tour, see several of them, and even swim or jump off for a more adventurous experience. The most famous waterfalls in Costa Rica are Rio Celeste, La Fortuna, and La Paz. Some guides can even locate hidden gems you can enjoy with your family.
Visit a National Park
The conversation efforts of the government are what makes the country special, with 30% of the land being protected. About half of this protected land comprises 30 national parks, comprising fresh waterways, ocean waters, and rainforests. These are the places where the wildlife thrives and can be spotted by skilled and knowledgeable guides. Some of the most popular national parks in Costa Rica include Monteverde Cloud Forest, Manuel Antonio, Corcovado, Tortuguero, and Arenal Volcano.
Relaxing in Hot Springs
The country is home to some very beautiful natural hot springs. One of the best-known is the La Fortuna or Arenal Volcano spring, which has relaxing mineral waters.
To Conclude
Costa Rica has vibrant sunsets, but the best view can be enjoyed from a sunset cruise. This will also take you to the waters and beaches that you could not access otherwise. You can find some of the best spots for snorkeling and experiencing the colorful marine wildlife like whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and puffer fish.

Costa Rica Specialty coffee tour recommendation in Monteverde (Santuario Ecologico or Cafe Monteverde)
Costa Rica Specialty coffee tour recommendation in Monteverde (Santuario Ecologico or Cafe Monteverde) hi, figured this would be the right place to post this for anyone who's gone to Costa Rica and specifically tried out coffee tours there.Looking for a specialty coffee tour. Don Juan is popular and looks fun but I don't really care for sugar or chocolate to that degree other than it's yummy and it seems less geared towards more coffee nerds/enthusiasts.I'm down to the following 2:santuario ecologico coffee tourcafe monteverde coffee tourBoth seem to offer very much specialty coffee tours really digging into the processing and roast and even cupping! Anyone done both or has a preference? Why?I'm leaning towards Santuario Ecologico, there is coffee tasting with different brew methods and even tasting coffee in various cup shapes! seems smaller producer, local perhaps?Cafe Monteverde has regular traditional cupping and seems larger productionThx! Traveler's Guide to Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a country that really sparked my love for travel and culture. It was one of my first trips and I was looking for adventure. I got my adrenaline fill and still had time to relax on some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. To this day it is one of my favorite places. You have to put this one on your list.
WHY YOU SHOULD GO
It is breathtakingly beautiful, bursting at the seams with abundance, and so manageable for new travelers. Out of all the countries I’ve been to, Costa Rica is one of the easiest to visit.
The Size
It is a fairly small country, only about the size of West Virgina, so you can hit up all of the hot spots in one trip. I was there for 11 days and feel as though I got a nice taste of the culture in that short time.
The Currency
Many places that you patron while there accept the US dollar. There will usually be a conversion sheet and they give change back in the local currency, the Colón (Colones plural).
The Locals
IN my experience, the locals are extremely kind and hospitable. Like anywhere, you have to keep your wits about you. However, I never once felt uncomfortable or stressed out by the locals. If you have ever been to Nassau, Bahamas, you know what I mean by “stressed out” by the locals. There were no street vendors trying to tie bracelets on my wrist and demand a tip or harassing you to buy their goods. There is a bit of cat calling, but I recommend just ignoring it and staying a group, as always.
The Activities
There is so much to do! Whether you want to go bird watching, white-water rafting, or beach hoping, you can really choose the intensity level of your trip. I saw groups and travelers of all ages.
The Biodiversity
One of their largest industries is ecotourism. I believe my tour guide mentioned and although their landmass is only .03% of the Earth’s surface, but they account for 5% of the world’s biodiversity. You will see animals that you never thought you’d see in the wild (can you say, Toucans)!?
WHERE YOU SHOULD GO
The entire country is so beautiful it is hard to choose just a few cities/regions, but here are my absolute favorites:
The Arenal Region
Volcanoes
Beautiful scenic views with Volcanos on the horizon. You can visit Lake Poás and look down into the crater of the volcano via a huge overlook platform.
Coffee Plantation
I visited the Doka Estate Coffee Plantation where I sampled various roasts of coffee, both hot and cold. The tour was very interactive. We got to see how the beans were dried by the sun and then later roasted to different levels to create different styles of beans. The guides were extremely kind and informative and honestly, they had me at “coffee samples.”
La Fortuna Waterfall
Swim at the base of a breathtaking 200 foot waterfall in the middle of the rainforest, what more can you ask for from a tropical vacation?
Lake Arenal
Go kayaking at the base of the Arenal Volcano in Lake Arenal. Spectacular 360 degree views of untouched natural beauty. I truly love being outside so this was perfect for me.
Monteverde (in Punta Arenas Region)
Santa Elena Cloud Forest
What a unique experience. A cloud forest is a essentially a foggy dream. It is a high altitude, high moisture rain forest habitat that is covered in a dreamy mist. The forest is so alive here. Be sure to bring a rain jacket or poncho as it is extremely damp (mist, hello) and pretty chilly.
Night Tour
I highly recommend going on a night time wilderness tour. You will see many nocturnal and interesting animals and I LOVED it. The forest really does come alive in the nighttime! Here is the one that I did. We saw sloths, bugs with glowing eyes, tarantula, sleeping birds, an eyelash viper and more!
More in Puntarenas Region
Manuel Antonio National Park
One of the most beautiful beaches I’ve been to! Grab a whole coconut from one of the vendors on the way in, relax on the beach and take epic pictures pristine shoreline. They won’t let you bring processed foods or plastic baggies, so bring fresh fruit instead! Be careful, the monkeys and raccoons will snag your food if you aren’t paying attention.
Jaco
This is Costa Rica’s Miami! This is a city that never sleeps, so have a drink or 5 and go dancing at the local bars/clubs. The water here is pretty rough but the beach strip is really beautiful for pictures in the evening.
Alajuela
Sarchi
Just outside of San Jose, in the Alajuela Province, there is a colorful little town called Sarchi. This town is known for their ornately decorated and hand painted ox-cart wheels. You have the opportunity to visit local shops and watch how the wheels are made.
Tips to Remember
Bring a poncho or rain jacket- it will randomly shower in the rainy season, but even when in the dry season, the forests can be very damp. Here is a light weight one that I have. It folds into a little bag which is super convenient.
Stay hydrated- Not only is it extremely hot, but traveling can be very hard on your body and you need to drink more water than usual to operate. Drink your electrolytes!
Bring bug spray- The mosquitoes in Costa Rica are no joke. I use Ben’s 30% DEET. It is carry on friendly at 3.4 ounces and contains DEET, so it is heavy duty.
Use sun screen- Even if you are not usually prone to burning, the summer sun is intense in this part of the world, so it is a good idea to stay protected and reapply frequently.
Bring your personal pharmacy- driving on winding mountain roads can make many people nauseous, so pack Dramamine. It is also always a good idea to bring basic Advil, electrolytes, Tums, Imodium, etc.
Bring a jacket- Though it can be extremely hot during the day, it can get chilly at night, and especially in the mountains.
I hope you are ready to try some traditional gallo pinto (Costa Rican beans and rice) and have an local Imperial beer!
Pura Vida!

Monteverde Cloud Forest
I was woken this morning by an alarm in the room next door going off constantly for over 30 minutes. How refreshing! Our adventure today was visiting a Cloud Forest in Monteverde that spans over 4000 hectares but only 2% of that is open for the public to walk through. Our guide Jean Bonilla took us through the endangered cloud forest and found us some animals and birds to look at. First we saw a lizard and a stick insect that looked like moss, then Jean took us to a spot he already clearly knew about - a partial nest hanging between some branches where a hummingbird was finishing up the work bringing twigs and moss to build it further. The cloud forest is basically a forest covered in cloud but due to climate change they are slowly disappearing and it affects the wildlife that live in them. The cloud forest is an 'evergreen forest' that depends on cloud cover for moisture and humidity year-round to maintain it's flora. There are certain wild avocados with a sweet orange flesh that grow only in the cloud forests that the native bird of Costa Rica, the quetzal feeds off and so they must stay nearby to survive on this diet. The cloud forest is also home to many "strangling trees" that grow from the top down and encase a regular tree. The tree eventually no longer has access to sunlight and will die and decompose inside the strangling tree. Jean found a tarantula hiding away in a hole, we all took turns shining his flashlight on it and looking at the red and black markings on it. The main predator for a tarantula is a wasp that stings and paralyses the spider, the wasp will then lay eggs in the spider and use its body as nutrients to incubate the eggs. Isn't nature fascinatingly gross!
We saw another hummingbird nest, this time the mother bird was feeding the little chicks regurgitated mosquitos. Jean set up his telescope and filmed it on Deme's iPhone since it was undisputed she had the best phone/camera of everyone so she'd get the photos and videos and then send them all to us. We reached a small waterfall where Jean showed the instagrammers of the group how to take the best photo of the flowing water for the ultimate effect. On our walk back to the main lodge and gift shop we passed a prehistoric tree that absorbs extra water like a camel so it can survive for years even without any rainfall to sustain it. We also briefly stopped to look at a different member of the coffee cherry family - the hot lips flower which looks like some red lips! I enjoyed that one so much I found a postcard with the flower to send to Alanna.
After the tour we stopped by Cafe Colibri which is the 'hummingbird cafe'. Basically they have bird feeders hung all around the cafe seating area outside so you can sit and sip your coffee, in my case a mocha, and watch the hummingbirds fluttering around and feeding.

Twice named “Happiest Country in the World” and identified as the greenest country on the planet, Costa Rica is the global leader in eco travel and adventure tourism. Costa Rica is half the size of Nicaragua and half the population yet there is so much to see in this tiny country that even a month is not enough. It is the most visited nation in Central America with 2.9 million foreign visitors in 2016 and one of the few countries that focus on preservation of nature and renewable energy. Around 25% of the country’s area is in national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, the largest percentage of protected areas in the world. Costa Rica also possesses the greatest density of wildlife species.
Tumblr media
Map of all the National Parks, Wildlife Refuges, and Protected Areas in Costa Rica
By 2016, 98.1% of the country’s electricity was generated from green sources (hydro, solar, geothermal and biomass) and by Aug 2018 the country was running completely on renewable energy and exporting green energy to its neighbors. Costa Rica does not cut trees for paper and has successfully managed to diminish deforestation from some of the worst rates in 1973- 1989 to almost zero by 2005.
Costa Rica also ranks high on longevity. Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste province (where Rapture Surfcamp is located) is one of 7 “Blue Zones” in the world where people live healthiest and longest. According to research, the main factors that contribute to such longevity are: staying close to nature, climate, family, faith, and farming.
Where is the beauty of not being rich in mineral resources you may wonder? For Costa Rica it was the opportunity to avoid colonization 🙂 Lack of resources such as gold and silver made Costa Rica into an isolated and sparsely-inhabited region within the Spanish Empire. Costa Rica was described as “the most miserable Spanish colony in all America”. Another important factor behind Costa Rica’s poverty was the lack of a significant indigenous population available for slave labor, which meant most of the Costa Rican settlers had to work their own land and couldn’t establish large plantations.
Tumblr media
Unappreciated and overlooked by the Spanish Crown and left to develop on its own, it was not long before the early settlers turned to the hills, where they found rich volcanic soil and a milder climate than the lowlands. Costa Rica became a “rural democracy” with no oppressed mestizo or indigenous class and abolished the army in 1949.
When you think of Costa Rica you may imagine endless beaches fringed by palm trees and while that is exactly the scenery on both coasts, in between there are numerous national parks, volcanos, cloud forests, wildlife reserves, waterfalls, and hot springs. So unless you spend at least a week in the middle of the country, you can’t really say you’ve seen Costa Rica. There are 14 known volcanoes in Costa Rica (compare that to 50 in Nicaragua), and 6 of them have been active in the last 75 years. I visited 2 – Rincon de la Vieja and Arenal – both active.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park is one of the driest in Costa Rica with one of the most endangered ecosystems. The active 1900m volcano is like a small Yellowstone with mud pots, boiling hot springs and other geothermal and volcanic features to be observed. If planning to hike a waterfall, choose La Cangreja for its sparkly blue lagoon where you can go for a swim. It is a 6km one way hike, so give it at least half a day and remember it gets dark early in the jungle.
Hacienda Guachipellin has the most amazing hot springs I’ve EVER been to! Experience the hot, hot, hot water (up to 120F) in a secluded natural setting alongside the river. Yes it burns, it also cleanses your pores and disinfects your wounds (comes handy for injured surfers 🙂 ) Try volcanic mud face mask and body painting, refresh yourself with a cold dip in the river ❤ To reach the hot springs you will drive for a while in the middle of nowhere. Don’t be discouraged, there are hot springs at the end of the forrest tunnel 🙂
Arenal Volcano last erupted in 1968 and formed hot springs at its base. The geothermal water, the volcanos (you can hike the Chato crater) and the proximity to the airport have turned the area in an overcrowded tourist attraction. If you decide to head that way, I recommend staying in Arenal (outside of La Fortuna). Hike a volcano or take a horseback ride around it, dip in the hot springs, see the waterfall, swim in the magma heated river, maybe do an outdoor adventure, THEN get out of there. 2 nights are enough 😉
On your way between Rincon de la Vieja and Arenal or from Arenal to Monteverde, stop by Rio Celeste for a day. The drive is long but it is a spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime sight.
Monteverde is my favorite part of inland Costa Rica. Stay 3-4 nights and plan to be busy with every type of nature and adventure tour you have heard of (and even some I couldn’t imagine before – orchid garden anyone?! or observing nature at night (fluorescent frogs 🙂 ), making your own molasses out of sugarcane, riding a cacao-grinding bicycle ?!) To book your tours, stop by Ro at Monteverde Downtown Hostel (even if you are not staying there) and follow his advice. He was SO spot on I was able to see half of the local attractions with the most authentic vendors in 2 days.
Monteverde is the only place in the world where you can still observe an unspoiled cloud forrest – you have 3 public parks to choose from and a number of private reserves. Named after the clouds that travels east to west from the Caribbean to the Pacific and stop in the treetops of Monteverde, the cloud forrest produces water instead of using it.
The Continental Divide that dissects Costa Rica north to south also passes through Monteverde. Since I visited the Divide in Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and Colorado, it was time to see it in Central America too. The Continental Divide splits the watershed into rivers that flow into the Atlantic and the Pacific.
Two incredible species I learned about in the cloud forrest were ferns older than dinosaurs and bigger than a human that protect the soil from erosion and trees that grow from top to bottom giving its host a tight hug with its roots until they reach the ground 🙂 🙂 🙂 #welcometothejungle My hopes to kiss a frog and find my prince in Costa Rica were shattered when I found out the golden toad has become extinct in Monteverde since 1989 🙂 🙂 🙂
A tour of the Orchid Museum was another highlight of my visit. I got to learn so much about these incredible flowers (jungle weeds to be exact) and I also stopped appreciating or buying the “supermarket variety”. While the orchid flower in nature lasts only a few days, the supermarket type can last for months. It is a hybrid which needs fertilizer once a week to once a month. The original color is actually white and the blue, pink, or purple hues are achieved with food coloring in the roots. First flowering is bright color, next one is color and white and the last one is completely white. PLEASE don’t buy them 😦
There are 30000 different orchids in nature and 1500 of them grow in Costa Rica. Ecuador has the largest number of species in the world in a single country (5000) while Monteverde has the most species per square mile. Guaria Morada is the national flower of Costa Rica. Orchids need indirect sunlight and water. Lower elevation orchids need water once a week, the mountain species need water every day.
The second largest sector of the Costa Rican economy is agriculture with bananas, plantains, pineapple, coffee, sugarcane, and exotic fruits being the main exports. Costa Rica is the 2nd largest pineapple producer in the world with >50% of the international market.
Sugarcane is non-native to America (Columbus first brought it to the Caribbean) but it grows really well in hot, humid climates. “El Trapiche” means sugar cane mill. While it is not typical in Costa Rica any more for small family plants to process the harvested sugarcane, it used to provide livelihood to many early settlers. Since harvesting the sugarcane is not only very laborious but can also be quite dangerous process (sharp leaves, snakes, insects) other countries burn the sugarcane plantations first and then harvest them. The stem contains all the sugarcane juice so it doesn’t burn but the fire takes care of the dangers on the ground.
Growing coffee is very popular in Central America with Costa Rica being one of the most famous producers in the world for single-origin high-quality coffee. All Costa Rican coffee is of the Arabica kind grown at over 1000m elevation. Take a tour of a coffee plantation in Monteverde to learn more about coffee growing and roasting processes!
Since going to the beach is an essential part of your visit in Costa Rica, here is a quick run down of the coast in the Guanacaste region. If you plan on surfing, add an extra week to your vacation, better yet add 2 weeks to properly enjoy the beach and learn new tricks 🙂 And go visit Rapture Surfcamps in Playa Avellanas! (The surf camp with the most amazing sunsets 🙂 )
Tamarindo is the party capital of the Guanacaste region. The local population of 500 swells up to 5000 with tourists in high season. My favorite night in Tamarindo was the Thursday Night Market (part of Rapture Surfcamps weekly activity schedule :-)) Another place I love in town is El Chiringuito Restaurant between Playa Tamarindo and Playa Langosta. Lunch, drinks, and sunset views are to die for! If you in the area during the day, take a tour of Las Baulas Natural Marine Park to see turtles, crocodiles, monkeys, birds, and other wildlife. Boats leave twice a day with exact time depending on the tides and it costs $25 p/p for group tours.
Playa Flamingo is one of Costa Rica’s most famous beaches for it crystal clear waters and pink skies at sunset. When visiting, have a meal at Loco Coco, it is absolutely delicious! Other famous beaches in the area are Playa Negra (filming spot of Endless Summer II), Playa Conchal (not sand but tiny shell pieces), Playa Hermosa (black volcanic sand), Playa Coco (great scuba diving and snorkeling spot), Playa Grande.
What I didn’t have the time to see but came highly recommended was Manuel Antonio National Park, Corcovado National Park, the village of Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast, Tortuguero National Park, Montezuma, Malpais, and Santa Teresa on the tip of the Nicoya peninsula and riding the ferry from Punta Arenas to Paquera (closed due to a strike when I was visiting).
You tell me now how a 2 weeks vacation is enough for Costa Rica? I suggest you take a month off, explore the country and send me info on everything I have missed!

Wednesday November 22 / 2023
Monteverde is at high elevation, so it was cooler here. Last night, the rain storm made it much cooler. I wore my fleece top to breakfast. We were facing the beautiful cloud forest and gorgeous birds came to visit. The Lessons Motmot was colourful with a long tail and two fans at the tip of the tail feathers.
Then we went for a self guided hike to a dozen waterfalls which were in spate due to the heavy rains yesterday. We had to hike in our wet hiking boots. I wore 2 wool socks to feel dry. Because of the heavy rain last night, trails were muddy, and some parts were covered in loose rocks. We also walked on many hanging bridges with a capacity of only one person at a time. They were very rickety, made with wood, ropes, and cables. The foot planks were spaced out and very slippery!
We passed 8 waterfalls in our 5 km hike and Simon did side trips to view 4 more. The scenery was great, and we enjoyed listening to the sound of the water and getting soaked by the mist of the water splashes.
Then we checked in to our hotel, and rested for a bit. The sun was out and it got warmer. So we put our hiking boots on the roof of the car to dry out. I laid my socks on my seat so these could get dry as well.
We had a coffee tour at 3:00 pm. I have been learning a lot about coffee and chocolate on this trip. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, and friendly. I learned that the French Press is the best way to make coffee to get the most caffeine out of the roasted beans. Also white chocolate is not made from finished chocolate. Instead, it is clear cacao butter mixed with sugary milk powder. Isn’t that interesting!
For dinner I had a vegan pizza made with coconut milk cheese.
Then we went for another night walk . Thank god it wasn’t raining. Our boots and socks were dry and comfortable to wear. We saw 3 different birds, a frog, and many spiders. Simon spent time photographing a praying mantis and scorpions.

Day 10: We had heard the howler monkeys from our hotel room in the morning, but we hadn’t seen them yet. As we were about to check out I noticed out our front patio there were a couple in the tree! Taylor got great pictures and video of them.
Today was our longest drive of the trip. We had originally planned to make one peninsula beach stop (Samara) before headed inland but after we received an alert for a road closure in that direction we decided just to head in.
Monteverde is a very hilly town. We can see the beach peninsula from our new home and also has cloud forests behind us. Tomorrow is going to be an active day as we are zip lining and taking a coffee tour.
