Falling Sky. I had high hopes for this game, but I think I'm done with it after 4 plays and a lot of frustration. It's just really long, pretty tedious, and does very little to evoke the historical period - it plays like a really complicated abstract. But I think most crucially, the Romans and Arverni are just incredibly difficult to play well (barring negligence from the Belgae and Aedui) and have to walk a vanishingly narrow tightrope, or get lucky with the event deck, to have any chance. Meanwhile the Belgae and Aedui are quite straightforward. None of the Gallic factions really control their own destiny though - Roman play basically decides the outcome (our game ended in an totally absurd kingmaking situation where the Romans decided the winner while the two Gallic contenders had literally no control over the outcome). The design of the card deck is also quite poor - too many highly specific events which have little applicability and a few powerful events which have an overbearing effect on the game just based on when and if they fall. Anyway, COIN can work if designed with care or by luck - Fire in the Lake is pretty fun as a game if you don't look too closely at the history - but these cookie-cutter, by-the-numbers designs are usually a dog's breakfast. COIN as originally designed had a bunch of pretty severe problems, almost all of which have been copied and pasted forward into all the subsequent games in the series. Future games need to move the ball down the field instead of imagining that they're starting on 3rd base.
