We tried a kinda unusual but cool sounding mic setup for @jenskuross 's piano & vocal songs. Widely spaced #coles4038 ribbon mics on either side with null pointing at the vocals, and the vocal tube mic set halfway between cardiod and figure-eight (hypercardiod). Sounded wide, dark, and vibey!

Got to track some beautiful piano playing today by @pjcolclasure 👏🙏 Forever searching for the perfect tone, Peter and I tried a couple microphone placement techniques before settling on the one seen/heard here. Stereo spaced Coles 4038 Ribbon mics and a @neumann.berlin SM69Fet in Cardioid X/Y - both on the underside of a @baldwinpianos grand piano for a more mellow and woody sound 👌 They don’t teach that in audio school 😎 • • #piano #recording #music #classical #polyrhythm #talent #radiohead #recordingstudio #microphone #mictechnique #ribbonmic #neumann #coles4038 #spacedpair #stereo #avid #protools #audio #school #baldwin #grandpiano (at Bird and Egg Recording Studio)

#Blog post 1. Recording Drum with Ed
Method we adopted
The technique we embraced for the drum recording was the well-known ' Glyn Johns method ‘.Glyn Johns is a British musician, engineer, and producer who most enormously worked with Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, and even commenced his profession helping for The Beatles. He definitely made a name for himself in the annuls of recording legend with his great John Bonham drum sounds on all those Zeppelin records. Johns developed a unique method to the recording of drums, sometimes referred to as the "Glyn Johns Method", that rarely employs more than two or three microphones, and which typically maintains one mike (ideally large diaphragm condensers) hoisted several feet overhead to attain natural perspective of the whole kit, as properly as one off to the side (not far from the floor tom tom), and one close to to the bass drum (dynamic or condenser). The key to the technique is to keep both the overhead mic and the side mic equidistant from the centre of the snare to form a triangular pattern (with the snare, the side mic and the overhead mic). Except occasionally the snare drum, Johns prefers not to close-mic the individual drums.

How we did it
We pursued the technique and placed an overhead mic, a side mic (near the tom-tom) and one on the kick drum. We added two more mics we used to close mic the the snare top and snare bottom. We used a pair of coles4038 mics, one as the overhead mic and one as the side mic. The frequency response of the 4038 is flat, with a range of about 30–15,000 Hz. The microphone uses a bi-directional polar pattern. Coles4038 provides natural smooth sonic quality textured response to sound signal being picked up.

Coles4038
We used an Audix D6 microphone to mic the kick drum. We used an Audix D6 because it was designed with a cardioid pickup pattern for isolation and feedback control as well as it is equipped with a VLM™ diaphragm for natural, accurate sound reproduction. The D6 cardioid microphone is a lightweight, compact and easy to position for miking instruments requiring extended low-frequency reproduction such as kick drums, large toms and bass cabinets.

Audix D6
We used a pair of Neumann km 184 to close mic the snare top and snare bottom. The KM 184 is a state-of-the-art small diaphragm condenser microphone with a uniform, frequency-independent cardioid polar pattern. Its transparent sound makes the KM 184 a superb microphone for acoustic instruments, such as piano, percussion, drums, acoustic guitar, upright bass, violin, cello, woodwinds, and brass.

Neumann km 184
The issues we had while recording
We decided to go for a rough recording. I was on the mixing console and Ed was playing the drums. Ed played the kick, snare, tom-tom and hi hats separately and I was adjusting the gain. I enabled phantom power on the snare top and snare bottom. After adjusting each track to get the best possible outcome, we recorded a rough track. But when we heard the output there was clicks and pops on the track. We couldn’t figure out how it’s happened. We recorded once more. There also we heard the clicks and pops on the track. We tried to figure out whether it is an issue of the microphone or it is the problem of the XLR cable or the mixing console. We played each track separately and tried to figure out the source of the clicks and pop. Unfortunately the audio recordings were stopped because we couldn’t find out what was happened. When we were packing all the mics and cables back, Adi (Adi winward) came. We told him about the clicks and pops during the recording. Then he reminded about setting the word clock to MADI in inside the word clock. We just checked that and it was set to internal instead of MADI. That was the reason for lots of clicks and pops. Although there we have to face some issues for me it’s improved my knowledge about drum recording and about the mixing console.

#Blog Post 8. Recording Drum: Version 2
It was Friday afternoon at the studio 1 Edward, sreedhar and I tried to record a drum track. We tried to close mic the individual drums. We multi mic’d up the kick drum using an inside and outside microphone. We also multi mic’d the snare with top and bottom mic. We experimented the phase flipping with both of these. We also used a spaced pair as overheads positioned equidistant from the snare. We also placed an omni directional dynamic mic which was placed as a point of view from the drummer. Sreedhar positioned this mic so that it was the same distance from the snare as the overheads to ensure phase coherence. We also tried an ORTF (Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française) stereo mic array recorded placed far from the kit to give an overall impression of the entire track.

Mics we used
We close mic’d the inside of the kick drum by using an Electro-voice RE20 microphone. Although the RE20 is described and known as a “broadcast announcer," it may also sound great in other circumstances. So we decided to put it inside a kick drum and test it output. It's a real cardioid at 180-degree off-axis without coloration. It has a frequency response of 45 – 18,000 Hz. We used a Warm Audio 47 microphone as a kick out mic. The Warm Audio WA-47 has a vacuum tube, large diaphragm, condenser microphone. The WA-47 has a seven-pin connector and several polar patterns are available. Specifically, the WA-47 may have a polar pattern of cardioid, omni, or figure 8, as well as variations among them.

Electro-voice RE20

Warm Audio 47
We close mic’d the snare top by using a Beyerdynamic M160 microphone. Interestingly, the M 160 is unique in that it has two ribbons, one above the other. This makes the output hotter than some other ribbon mics. We close mic’d the snare bottom by Shure SM57 microphone. This is best used for vocals on stage, but acoustic guitars are another very common usage. I've also heard several drummers express their love of the SM57, often setting up one of the mics for each part of their kit. So we mic’d it at snare botom.

M160

SM57
We used an Audix D6 on the floor tom. I have used the Audix D6 while trying the “Gyn Johns methord”on an earlier session and it sounds well. We used an Audix D4 inorder to close mic the high tom. The microphone has a pattern of hypercardioid pickup pattern and can withstand sound pressure rates of up to 144 dB.

Audix D6 and D4
We used a pair of Neumann KM184 small diaphram condenser microphone for the ORTF stereo mic technique. We placed the microphone on such a way that the angle between them is about 110 degree and are seperated by a distance 17cm from each other. The entire setup was placed on a stand which is far away from the drum kit.

Neumann KM184
We also used a pair of Coles4038 as overheads in placed in the left and right which equidistant from the snare. The coles4038 provides a natural sonic quakity textured response to the sound signal being picked up.

Coles4038
After Recording…
After arranging the mics properly we just gone for a rough take. Ed was playing the drum. Sreedhar and I was at the console. After adjusting the proper gain for each induvidual mic we setup for each part of the kit , we recorded a track. The sound was overall nice. We did some panning since we had got a stereo output. The overheads sound great. The ORTF technique we used also had a great sonic ambiance. As we have only less time , we just gone through some EQ and compression. Overall I learned somehow from Edward and Sreedhar. They helped me to understand what were doing and how we can make the track little more nice. I enjoyed the session well.

Composing a tv cue that's emulating live jazz from late 50s / early 60s. This mic setup did the trick! #AEA #r92 above/in front of kit, with a touch of #coles4038 for low end support. Both mics equidistant from center of kick. And it also doesn't hurt to use a 60s A Zildjian that sounds like Art Blakey and a snare that sounds like Philly Jo 😁
