Ellen Nunes investigates in her PhD how the installation series Cosmococa by Helio Oiticica and Neville D’Almeida can be understood in the context of current contemporary processes and strategies. Her practice explores collaboration with temporary communities as a way to uncondition from the institutionalised artistic practice with works that explore support structures for collaboration and participation. 

As part of her research methodology, Ellen co-organised with Michael Asbury a serie of seminars on the works and writings of Oiticica at University of Art London with MA students. The group continued to work together in a yearlong research which entangled Oiticica's theories and collective artistic practice that resulted in a shared experiment with the collaboration of artists Andrea Rocha, Marcia Thompson and Patricia Tavares.

‘Double Tap’ Final Event!

Yesterday we had our real and final event for Double Tap! The event was going to run from 11am - 4pm in the Student Centre. We all met up at 10am there to set everything up. While others set up the lights, backdrops etc, I went around the university putting up the posters to advertise the days event. Using blu-tac, I put them on the walls around Keyworth Building, London Road building and the Student Centre. I also created little 6x4 flyers of the poster and spread them around tables and seating areas to get people to notice it more.

Once everything was set up, it all looked really good and it was all coming together. Our set consisted of a desk and chair for Ellie to do the retouching on the laptop, a white backdrop for the Studio area with 2 ProFoto lights, a gold backdrop for the Selfie area with a pink pillow with 1 continuous light, and 2 interview tables with chairs for the interviewers and participants. 

Chloe did an amazing job designing the signs for the studio, selfie and interview areas!

Adam was obviously our first participant to test out the selfie station!

Throughout the day we got a couple of participants willing to be photographed and interviewed - I will be uploading their interviews on a separate post with the links to hear them. Below are the images taken from the studio and then their selfie which was all uploaded to our Double Tap Instagram Page.

Our first customers were these 3 guys, for each of our participants we uploaded their studio photo to our Instagram page with our own caption and hashtags, and for the Selfie we asked them to write whatever caption they wanted, use any filters and use any hashtags, if they wished. The selfie station also had an iPad for the participants to take their image straight on Instagram, and that way it was easier and quicker for them to be uploaded straight to the page.

All these people posted on our Instagram page have given us permission to use their photographs in this project by signing consent forms.

There wasn’t many girls at all that were up for taking part, it was mostly guys and in groups, and if we did have girls it was only if they were with someone (apart from the one female participant above who did it on her own).

Some of our classmates even got involved as well to show their support!

Overall, I think the day went very well. From this event, there will be a time lapse made along with a final video combining the photographs, video and interviews from the day (which will be uploaded in a separate blog post). Comparing it to our rehearsal, it went much better and more smoothly and not so confusing with the interviews like last time!

Hannah Fallowfield, Elias Jameison Brown & Harrison Lancaster Breese are emerging artists from Melbourne, interested in developing a methodology that produces new theatrical work through collaborative performance practices. Our first collaboration, Four Clicks To Jesus, will use three carefully chosen provocations to examine the role of the individual in a “progressive society”, the relationship between power and mythology via the symbol of the podium, and the inevitable mess of climate change that Millennials will be left to clean up.

Creating the portfolio for submission

After Andrealetizia sent the images from the final campaign, I decided to create the final body of work in a digital format. I decided to use Microsoft Powerpoint to create the slides where I would then be able to export the file as a PDF for submission. As the images were portrait format I didn’t know whether to create a body of work consisting of a portrait or landscape PDF. I decided in the end to create two to see which works best for the images as presentation is key for delivering the final body of work. 

I have included screenshots of the document below with the chosen quotes supporting the images of their responses to our campaign.

From creating both PDF documents of the final portfolio of work, I feel that the portrait version works best due to the larger size of images. I also feel the text worked better under the images. Due to this, I will submit the portrait version as the final body of work.
