So I'm deep in the woods of Greenville, South Carolina babysitting my parents dogs this week while they are on vacation. While this means I'm totally missing my wife and kids it does give me a chance to just sit and draw. My day job has been rather busy lately so it's been harder and harder to find time to really concentrate on Moon Hunters. I had penciled some pages earlier this month and saved them to ink just for this week since I know I'd have time to just sit with pen in hand. At first I was worried since I hadn't inked anything in a couple weeks but once I got into it, everything went pretty smooth. I actually drew this page out of order. This is the first of a four page story about a little cat who realizes he's been reincarnated. Fun little piece. When I started the day I wasn't sure I'd even get close to finishing this page. My daughter had a field trip that was going to take a good half of the day. Then I had some design work to do as well. Luckily I somehow pulled it off. This was visually a very complex page, with a lot of perspective changes and movement. Luckily I think I pulled it off. Trap Jaw felt triumphant. At last he had his enemy Man-At-Arms in his clutches. Would this be the end of one of Eternia's greatest heroes? And the Masters of the Universe commission is finally complete. I sat down today and masked off the main art and masthead and then using two sheets of paper slowly masked off and spattered a textured background. It was time consuming and at times a bit frustrating. So these are what my pencils look like. I rarely actually do pencils this tight but for a cover commission I really want the art to look crisp and beautiful. For interiors I tend to go with what I know will print or scan well and I can really cut corners for speed. Now as far as the actual drawing here...you ever get that feeling when you draw something and you just know this one is going to be so much fun to ink? So much fun to see finished. Well I was recently commissioned to do a play off of the cover of the classic Justice League #122. The amazing person who commissioned the piece mentioned maybe using the Legion of Super Pets but left it pretty wide open. I was hesitant at first because honestly drawing cats and dogs always makes me nervous. Strangely enough drawing a horse (which some people say is hard) didn't. But I do love drawing chimps so I at least attempted it. And man I have to say I REALLY love this piece so far. I'll be inking soon and will try to video the inking process in a time-lapse. But I'm really excited to knock this one out. In case you are wondering for the typography I generally blueline that on the board and ink that before I do the pencils. I know generally where shapes overlap so I can plan ahead. But I do ink it freehand. It needs to be authentic. It's been a couple days since I posted. Here is an inked page of Moon Hunters that is fresh off the desk. I revisted the pencils on this page and redrew a panel and finally got around to inking it. The top panel stayed the same but redrew the bottom. Originally it was a very flat straight on camera angle. I fixed it to give it much more depth. This is a setup for the final battle. Originally it was set near a volcano minus the castle. But I felt like the whole scene was missing something so I'm reworking to give it a location instead of just being a bunch of rocks. The river below is a river of lava. So I still get to keep the volcano and lava thing. You'll also see some images where I accidentally spilled a whole bunch of ink on the right bottom corner of the page (and all over my desk too). Luckily some Pro White fixed it all up. In the past I would have just started over in frustration. But I'm much more chill. Working on a page from a commissioned four page story. This is what my pencils look like when I'm not all loose and carefree. Honestly it's been a bit uncomfortable doing pencils after so long of just throwing down some loose sketches and inking. I feel like I'm way too heavy handed, but even still the overall page would ink pretty nicely I think. I'm particularly proud of the long four segmented multi-panel.
