Plant of the Day
Saturday 22 April 2023
The British native perennial Taraxacum officinalis (dandelion) is in flower. This plant is able to grow in compacted ground where it provides bright yellow blooms and ‘clock’ seed-heads. It is a welcome source of nectar and pollen for many insects.

How does "Weeds" Tell A Whole Lot
Tumblr media
Weeds can serve as indicators of unhealthy soil conditions, such as compaction and poor drainage. Unlike cultivated plants, which struggle in these conditions, weeds are adapted to thrive in degraded soils.
Common lawn weeds like clovers, ground ivy, and thistles are often found in lawns with poor soil structure, drainage, and humus content.
By identifying the types of weeds present, such as chickweed or plantain, one can gather clues about the presence of compacted soil, as these weeds tend to flourish in cultivated and compacted areas.
Paying attention to these signals can help in assessing and addressing soil health issues for a healthier lawn.

Loosen and improve compacted soil
Tumblr media
A compacted soil is a sick soil. How to give him new life, you will find out here.
Tumblr media
A good garden soil has a crumbly texture, stores enough water, is well ventilated and contains enough nutrients. There is no ideal soil for the garden plants known to us. After all, the respective plants make their own claims to the ground. A good plant location is usually characterized by a crumbly texture. In addition, it stores enough water, is well ventilated and contains enough nutrients. But we do not find such conditions everywhere. If we look only from the surface of the earth in our latitudes, we can see that it resembles a patchwork rag that has stony, dry and sandy or moist and loamy as well as clayey surfaces. Compacted soil
A problem for the garden friend can be a compacted soil. For example, areas affected by this were exposed to immense pressure from construction machinery for a while. A common problem, especially when new plant a garden. Even more often it hits garden soils, which have a high clay or clay content. These store a lot of water and condense on the surface when a lot of running around on wet soil. To maintain soil health, it is therefore important to loosen the garden soil regularly. What consequences can occur? Densified soil carries the risk of gradually reducing yields in the garden. Causes are: ❷ Poor soil aeration Especially in garden soil with a high clay and clay content, the soil pores are gradually compressed, the soil aeration subsides . But to convert the nutrients in the soil, the soil organisms need oxygen.
Tumblr media
Soil compaction encapsulates the habitat of soil organisms. Earthworms loosen up the soil and increase the water conductivity through their gait systems. ❷ Habitat for soil animals is restricted. On the one hand, the number of soil organisms decreases due to the lack of oxygen in the solidified soil, on the other hand, the habitat for soil animals is restricted. Earthworms that loosen up the soil, move to other areas when it becomes too difficult for them to dig through the compacted soil. ❸ Roots do not form optimally Many plants root through the soil compaction only shallow and are therefore vulnerable to drought. The result: low yields and growth. ❹ Waterlogging may form In the worst case, waterlogging may form in the compacted soil after prolonged rainfall. If the soil organisms then lack to implement the nutrients, moderating processes can begin.Necessarily break up compacted soil ❶ The spade only temporarily use Heavy loamy or clay soils work your best with quartz sand and compost through. Temporary digging is allowed. So you gradually make the ground more permeable. However, if you find healthy humus in your garden soil, then avoid digging up, because otherwise the helpful soil organisms will be killed. These loosen up the soil better than you could with a spade. Nicht Do not dig up healthy soil If you want to loosen up healthy soils, you can use the grave fork to shake up the soil a bit or pull a cultivator (sow tooth) through the bed. When loosening the soil, a green manure with Phacelia, Crimson clover or yellow mustard helps. In addition, in the hot summer, student flowers and nasturtium on harvested areas perform good soil loosening. Dynamic Compaction (DC) is a a Ground Modification techniquee whereby loose soils can be effectively and economically densified to improve its mechanical characteristics and allow construction of structures directly on compacted soil, without need of deep foundations or soil replacement. The method involves dropping heavy steel pounders repeatedly on the ground at regularly spaced intervals. The weight and height of pounding depends on the degree of compaction desired. The usual range of pounder weight is between 12 Ton to 25 Ton and the drop height can be up to 25m. Dynamic Compaction (DC) method is applicable for a wide variety of soil conditions including saturated/unsaturated loose Sands, even with the presence of silty pockets, dune sands, inorganic fill, reclaimed soils with variable characteristics and sizes even with the presence of large sized boulders, landfill deposits and collapsible soils. Dynamic Compaction (DC) has been extensively used to compact loose soils to depths of up to 10m, in order to increase the bearing capacity, decrease post construction settlement and mitigate liquefaction risk in case of seismic events.
