It’s the last day of this week-long #compositionphotochallenge I am so happy so many of you have taken part, & trusted @deepika.haldankar & me to help provide you feedback as you continue to learn on your food photography journey! I hope you’ve all been learning a lot & taking the opportunity to see & engage with what others have posted under the hashtag. I can’t wait to see what story you all tell for the theme, shadows, today. Please let us know if this is something you would want us to host again. And, thank you again for your trust & participation! As for today’s photo. Well, I’ve been creating new content all week for this challenge & need a bit of a creativity break... So, for the shadows theme, I’ve pulled out this little nugget from my chocolate covered cherry shoot from back in February. Now, if you’ve seen this photo around lately, it is because I am also using this picture on a flyer for an upcoming chocolate collab that I am hosting with @emma_jane_sheldrake If you want to join that, you can reach out to Emma of me to join in on the chocolaty-goodness fun! As always, scroll for BTS. Love to you all, and stay safe out there! Day four of the week-long challenge & going strong! We are so happy to see how many of you are learning! Today is all about crops. We wanted you to expand your horizons and create a composition following a cropping guide you had not used before. This image fits to the golden spiral, golden ratio, and rule of thirds. You can see the overlays when you scroll. Tomorrow is the last day, for the theme, ‘shadows!’ Be sure you keep tagging @deepika.haldankar and @eatliftbe, and using the hashtag #compositionphotochallenge Don’t forget to let us know if you want us to DM you with feedback. Today’s image is also part of a #lowcarbrecipecollab hosted by @fork_and_whisk and @wheatfreemom For the collab, I re-shot an old Keto red velvet cupcake recipe. I haven’t posted the new photos to the blog yet, but I have included some of the old photos for you in the scroll. Looking back at them, I am so happy to see how much progress I have made as a photographer in just a year! As always, scroll for BTS. Love to you all, and stay safe out there! Day three of the week-long challenge & going strong! @deepika.haldankar and I are thrilled to see so many people asking for feedback & really trying to learn and improve. So, to everyone, give yourselves a pat on the back, & keep going! Today is all about layers. More often than not, when I feel like something is missing from my photograph, to make it feel complete, I realize it is a missing layer. That could be an extra plate, or placing the subject on a cutting board. Or, maybe it is some garnish. However, layers can also be about different levels of height, to balance the scene. I have been absolutely loving seeing everyone’s photos. And, it isn’t too late to join in! All you have to do is post your photo & in your caption: - Tag @eatliftbe and @deepika.haldankar - Use hashtag #compositionphotochallenge - Provide the theme of the day (the rest of the week is listed below) - Let us know if you want us to DM you with feedback All week long, Deepika and I will be going thorough & engaging with posts, featuring our favorites in our stories, & providing helpful feedback per your request! Let’s take this time, while we are stuck inside, to challenge ourselves to learn something new, and meet new folks with the same interests. *Here are the remaining themes & dates:* 3/26: Crop 3/27: Shadows For those that are participating, I encourage you to jump on over to the hashtag, pull up the ‘recent’ tab, & engage with others participating in the challenge. As always, scroll for BTS. Love to you all, and stay safe out there! Welcome to day two of the week-long #compositionphotochallenge co-hosted by @deepika.haldankar and me! Today’s challenge is all about negative space! Negative space can draw attention to a subject and enhance your composition. Today, I photographed some black garlic for you. Another ingredient I have never tried, and another one I am probably going to devour tonight. I think I will put it in my purple asparagus side! You all, I am so excited to see what you have created for us this week. And, it isn’t too late to join in! All you have to do is post your photo and in your caption: - Tag @eatliftbe and @deepika.haldankar - Use hashtag #compositionphotochallenge - Provide the theme of the day (the rest of the week is listed below) - Let us know if you want us to DM you with feedback All week long, Deepika and I will be going thorough and engaging with posts, featuring our favorites in our stories, and providing helpful feedback per your request! Let’s take this time, while we are stuck inside, to challenge ourselves to learn something new, and meet new folks with the same interests. *Here are the remaining themes and dates:* 3/25: Layers 3/26: Crop 3/27: Shadows For those that are participating, I encourage you to jump on over to the hashtag, pull up the ‘recent’ tab, and engage with others participating in the challenge. It’s finally here! The first day of the week-long #compositionphotochallenge co-hosted by @deepika.haldankar and me! Today’s challenge is all about texture! How do you use texture to enhance your photos? Do you only bring the texture out in your food, or do you use different types of textures to create strong contrast, and thus strong composition? You all, I am so excited to see what you have created for us this week. And, it isn’t too late to join in! All you have to do is post your photo and in your caption: - Tag @eatliftbe and @deepika.haldankar - Use hashtag #compositionphotochallenge - Provide the theme of the day (the rest of the week is listed below) - Let us know if you want us to DM you with feedback All week long, Deepika and I will be going thorough and engaging with posts, featuring our favorites in our stories, and providing helpful feedback per your request! Hi, Let’s check in. This week, it really hit me with what is going on in the world. Not to say it hadn’t before, but being turned away from the store, & later waiting in line to get in. All of us in gloves & masks. It really hit home for me. So, basically, I really just want to see how YOU are doing. In the meantime, I’m excited that the big composition challenge you’ve all been waiting for is almost here! Monday’s theme, texture, will definitely fun! Texture adds contrast to a scene & really gives a photo that extra oomph. When I started shooting these asparagus (that I am dying to cook up), I started with a white wooden board that had SOME texture to it. However, it needed something a bit more. So, I went with this placemat instead. When you scroll through the photos, you will see how the texture of the placemat adds so much more to the photo than the original wooden texture. *Here are the themes & dates:* 3/23-Texture 3/24-Negative Space 3/25-Layers 3/26-Crop 3/27-Shadows Next week, during the challenge, when you post your photo, tag @eatliftbe & @deepika.haldankar in the caption, provide the theme of the day, & use #compositionphotochallenge All week long, Deepika & I will be engaging with your posts, featuring our favorites in our stories, & if you request it in your caption, we will DM you with constructive feedback on your images. As usual, scroll for #BTS. Stay safe out there! Love to you all! It’s the 3rd Thursday of the month, and that means that today is the #monthlycolorcollab hosted by the @ww_bakes And of course, the color of the month for march is GREEN! So, today’s photo actually took a while for me to setup. I was playing with different layers and textures (at one point the bowl was on three layers of different wood), because I wanted to represent loads of different examples for next week’s #compositionphotochallenge that I am co-hosting with @deepika.haldankar In the end, I went back to a similar setup I have been using a lot lately, but the bowl still is on at least one layer! I have been getting lots of questions about the challenge, so hopefully I can provide further insight here. The idea around this composition challenge is for you to challenge yourself to trying something new, and improve your composition skills, using the theme of each day. 3/23: How often do you use different textures within food and backdrops to add contrast to your composition? Try it out! 3/24: Do you always fill your frame with lots props? By leaving negative space, instead, you can draw attention to your subject 3/25: Layers create a stronger composition. You can use them by layering food with garnish, or stacking food on top of stacked plates, on top of a napkin. Go crazy! 3/26: Always use the rule of thirds for your cropping guide? Try a new one, and see how it changes your photo! 3/27: Are you used to light and airy images? Try telling a story with your shadows instead! As always, scroll for BTS. Love to you all! Shot on Canon EOS 80D F/2.8 - Photo stacked images ISO 100 SS: 1/200 Lens: 100mm Macro Speedlight with Stripbox and Grid: 1/32 speed at 24mm zoom #losangelesphotographer #lafoodphotographer #feedfeed #food52grams #foodiesfeed #foodbloggerpro #thrivemags #macroshots #foodartblog #foodblogfeed #masterfoodphotography #laphotographers #laphotographer #darkfoodwednesday #moodyfoodphotography #darkfoodphotography #iso100 #stillography_ #stilllifephotography #foodphotographyandstyling #foodfoto #edamame #edemame #edemames #edemamebeans #thebiteshot #foodphotography #yum https://www.instagram.com/p/B97UEI4FyF4/?igshid=1a5mm58g1ohrj

Hi Everyone, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Today’s image is for the #potluckoirishcollab co-hosted by @plate_and_pen and @cooking_with_wine I think the next few weeks might be a bit rough for folks, so feel free to have a pint, or two! I have also created a very minimal image using negative space, one of the themes for the upcoming #compositionphotochallenge hosted by @deepika.haldankar and me (@eatliftbe). The use of negative space can bring attention to the subject, and draw a viewer in. Something to think about during next week’s challenge! As always, scroll for BTS. Hi Everyone! Happy Monday. I have to say, this weekend was tough, when it came to shooting. Pretty much nothing worked for me, and I have barely any new content for the week. So, I am already jumping right back to the batch of blueberry shots that I did the other weekend. I promise, tomorrow we will get a new subject to look at! Hopefully you won’t mind two blueberry shots so close together. 🤔🙏🙏🤔😬 This shot was taken with an identical setup as my last blueberry shot. The only difference was the angle of the camera. I also used the “Golden Mean” cropping guide on this one, for where my hero blueberry is. Remember, as part of the upcoming #compositionphotochallenge co-hosted by @deepika.haldankar and me, ‘crop’ is one of the themes, where we are challenging you to create an image using a cropping guide you have not used before. *Here are the themes and dates:* 3/23: Texture 3/24: Negative Space 3/25: Layers 3/26: Crop 3/27: Shadows As usual, scroll for #BTS. And, as an extra special bonus, I am including a similar blueberry shot that I took last year. What a difference a lens, more photography experience, and better editing can make! 👍 Love to you all! Hello! More chocolate for you today, as I embrace this month’s MFP IG challenge. Between the chocolate, caramel, pasta, & berries, you should all know a bit more about me. Let’s talk about this image, & what compositional techniques used as we prep for the comp photo challenge that is being co-hosted by @deepika.haldankar & me. Shadows: Did I create a story with them, or just make the image moody? You tell me! Texture: We have the texture of the wood table, cocoa, & frosting! Layers: We haven’t talk about this one too much. Did you know that food could also be used as a layer? Here are my layers: plate, cocoa, chocolate chips, cupcake. Crop: Rule of thirds. So, who is excited for this challenge?! As always, scroll for BTS. Love to you all! Shot on Canon EOS 80D F/4 ISO 100 SS: 1/200 Lens: 100mm Macro Speedlight Flash: Modified with Strip Soft Box and Honeycomb Grid 1/8 speed at 80mm zoom Photostacked in photoshop _________________________________ If you don’t want to miss out on participating in this month’s MFP IF Challenge, & a chance to be featured, be sure you register for the MFP community via the link in the bio on @masterfoodphotography . Happy Humpday!   I hope everyone is having a good start to the morning. I will admit, I am a bit sleepy. Moo woke me up in the middle of the night to go out. I crawled out of bed, put my jacket on, went to go put his leash on, & he had gotten in my bed. And was all curled up. The little devil.   Then, this morning I was trying to run the dogs, but Izzy is SO slow. The pups are on a double leash, so when Izzy is dragging behind, she is also choking Moo. 🤦🏼‍♀️   Ah, the life of a #dogmom   Today’s photo is another one from the large pasta shoot I did. To be honest, I am not in love with this shot anymore, but it provides a good example of different textures & layers that can help build a composition. Each layer (table, wood board, flour) is another type of texture.   Be sure to keep that in mind for the upcoming #compositionphotochallenge the week of March 23rd!   As usual, scroll for BTS. Love to you all!   Shot on Canon EOS 80D F/9 ISO 100 SS: 1/250 Lens: 100mm Macro Flash: 1/1 speed at 105mm zoom *Here are the themes and dates:* 3/23: Texture 3/24: Negative Space 3/25: Layers 3/26: Crop 3/27: Shadows #thekitchn #foodietribe #foodphotographyandstyling #homemadeisbetter #foodandwine #homemadepasta #foodforfoodies #foodfoto #foodphotos #homecooks #homechef #losangelesphotographer #lafoodphotographer #foodartblog #foodblogfeed #masterfoodphotography#laphotographers #iso100 #homemadedough #pastamaking #pastawell #darkfoodwednesday #darkfoodphotography #eeats #feedfeed #processshot #eggwell #pasta https://www.instagram.com/p/B9mb6ZgFAnl/?igshid=pv6mz21jnog6

Hi There! I know what you are probably thinking. This is not my standard type of drink photo. It’s moody, but there are no perfect highlights or special fx. The truth is, I set this up, took a few shots, decided it wasn’t what I wanted & set it up differently. When I went back to Lightroom I realized there was something special about the 1st shot. I tried to recreate it, but couldn’t replicate it exactly. The perspective was off just slightly, & it would’ve taken too long to match it to the 1st one. (the best shot) In the end, I decided that was OK. I really liked the beauty of this minimalistic shot, loved the moodiness from the soft shadows & light, & how the negative space made the photo completely about the glass. So, while different than my usual, I hope you will also love the simplicity. Why am I telling you this? Well, I think it’s helpful to think about the thought process of a photographer, to understand why they captured a pic just so. Plus, shadows & negative space are 2 of the themes for the upcoming composition challenge that I’m co-hosting with @deepika.haldankar the week of March 23rd. So, keep those concepts in mind. See below for challenge details & scroll for BTS. Love to you all!
