Have you all noticed how a photo of an empty plate or bowl can sometimes be more interesting than than seeing a full meal? That’s because seeing that empty vessel, with only the crumbs remaining tells a story. It can evoke an emotion or help recall a memory. That is so much of what composition is about.  A few weeks ago, I posted a #saffron picture as part of the spice theme for the #eatcaptureshare challenge.  This picture today, was another one from the collection of images.  When people scrolled through the images, almost everyone said that this one was their favorite. I think that’s because this one is so abstract, & the falling saffron, on the almost empty cutting board makes the viewer curious. Those few pieces of saffron are like the crumbs. Nailing composition is so important in photography, because it is what helps the audience connect with the image.  That is why, for the week of March 23rd, I will be partnering with the beautiful @deepika.haldankar to co-host a 5-day challenge. Each day will be a different theme, as it relates to composition.  As we get closer to that date, Deepika and I will announce the specific themes for each day, and will share inspiration to match those themes in our feed, with helpful tips. So, keep the week of March 23rd in mind, so that you can join in on our challenge.  More info coming soon! Love to you all! Happy Saturday everyone! Can I just say, thank goodness for the farmer’s market across the street! I definitely plan on ordering food from the store. However, while the farmer’s market is quite pricey, it does provide some time for fresh air (underneath the mask, gloves, and layers of clothes), and everyone is really spread out, which is safer than the grocery store. Plus, they are getting much stricter in how many people can be shopping at once, entry and exit points, and distance between customers. So, it feels like the right choice to me. Plus, I get to keep photographing moody veggies, like this artichoke here! This is actually some haul from last week, and I really need to get it cooked up. Soon! But, I couldn’t cook it without at least getting a few shots in! Anyway, I hope you are all staying safe, and doing your best to stay healthy. Hang in there! And, as usual, scroll for BTS! Love to you all! Hello there! Tell me, does anyone else want to get up close and personal with these moody asparagus? Still making my way through the farmer’s market crop from the weekend. Need to cook these babies up before they go bad. So, I had to get them photographed. I guarantee as soon as they are cooked, they will be in my belly! Love to you all, and stay safe out there! WARNING! This is not the proper way to light a glass! That said, sometimes it is okay to break the rules. So, yesterday I started setting up a re-shoot for a #lowcarb parfait recipe I shot about a year or so ago, and just to do a quick test shot for using the background, I placed the glass onto the wooden boards, and took a shot using the identical setup as what I used for the Brussels sprouts shoot from yesterday. I totally loved what I saw, so I went ahead and styled the #parfait, and updated the lighting setup for a proper glassware setup. Two strip boxes on either side, diffusion material in between, and so forth. Only, I didn’t like how the shots came out. So, I decided to break the rules, and go back to the setup as I had it originally. I couldn’t get it setup perfectly to the original, but I did the best I could. As for whether I still see the magic I saw in my test shot? I’m not sure to be honest. I really wish I could get it exact. But you tell me! Hello there, and happy Tuesday! Are any other food photographers out there worried about not having anything to photograph these days? Seriously, all last night I had dreams that I had no food to photograph. Thankfully I do have some stuff left in the house. These beauties are some more from the farmers market. I cooked up the carrots yesterday and had a delicious, savory, yet sweet, snack. Up next for a snack-time veggie with be these Brussels sprouts. I only bought a small bag, so not loads to enjoy, but I will still gobble them up none the less. My go-to recipe for some easy sprouts are a bit of Lawry’s seasoning salt, ground black pepper, and garlic powder. They are super easy and delicious all roasted up and browned in the oven. The composition of this photo was inspired by the feed and portfolio of Jena, over at @littlerustedladle I am totally obsessed with her work. It is so stunning. So, if you haven’t checked it out, then you definitely want to! As usual, scroll for the BTS. Love to you all, and stay safe out there! Hello, there. Just some fresh carrots for you today from the farmer’s market! This weekend I chose not to hit the store, and just mask and glove up to go to the farmer’s market across the street. It’s kind of crazy how masking and gloving up is the new norm. As soon as I got home I washed everything, threw out the plastic, and just went through the whole cleaning process. Of course, I can’t really wash all the food with soap, so hopefully it is okay. 🤞🤞 I additionally scrubbed the house, groomed Izzy, and tried to explain to Moo that every time I take him out that there is a long process and ordeal to re-wash everything. He clearly didn’t understand me, because he scratched at the door anyway, and asked to go out. Even though he had been out an hour earlier. I def think the pups are feeling this isolation as well. That is for sure! Anyway, I hope everyone is staying safe out there! As usual, scroll for the BTS. Love to you all! Happy Saturday, everyone! I hope you don’t mind another cupcake photo. These are actually the #redvelvetcupcakes I posted the other day, but I decided to play around in photoshop this morning, just for kicks. So, I turned it into a regular chocolate cupcake photo with a teal wrapper! This week there was such an amazing show of participation for the challenge I co-hosted. I loved seeing the improvement throughout the week, and seeing people really rise to the challenge, no pun intended. That said, I’m excited to get back to creating just for creation’s sake, with no specific agenda or theme in mind. Especially with all that’s happening out in the world right now, and the time and effort it takes to wash everything each time I get back in the house, I am looking forward to relaxing a bit. So, I guess I am going to go get back to it. As usual, scroll for BTS. Love to you all, and stay safe out there! It’s the last day of this week-long #compositionphotochallenge I am so happy so many of you have taken part, & trusted @deepika.haldankar & me to help provide you feedback as you continue to learn on your food photography journey! I hope you’ve all been learning a lot & taking the opportunity to see & engage with what others have posted under the hashtag. I can’t wait to see what story you all tell for the theme, shadows, today. Please let us know if this is something you would want us to host again. And, thank you again for your trust & participation! As for today’s photo. Well, I’ve been creating new content all week for this challenge & need a bit of a creativity break... So, for the shadows theme, I’ve pulled out this little nugget from my chocolate covered cherry shoot from back in February. Now, if you’ve seen this photo around lately, it is because I am also using this picture on a flyer for an upcoming chocolate collab that I am hosting with @emma_jane_sheldrake If you want to join that, you can reach out to Emma of me to join in on the chocolaty-goodness fun! As always, scroll for BTS. Love to you all, and stay safe out there! Day four of the week-long challenge & going strong! We are so happy to see how many of you are learning! Today is all about crops. We wanted you to expand your horizons and create a composition following a cropping guide you had not used before. This image fits to the golden spiral, golden ratio, and rule of thirds. You can see the overlays when you scroll. Tomorrow is the last day, for the theme, ‘shadows!’ Be sure you keep tagging @deepika.haldankar and @eatliftbe, and using the hashtag #compositionphotochallenge Don’t forget to let us know if you want us to DM you with feedback. Today’s image is also part of a #lowcarbrecipecollab hosted by @fork_and_whisk and @wheatfreemom For the collab, I re-shot an old Keto red velvet cupcake recipe. I haven’t posted the new photos to the blog yet, but I have included some of the old photos for you in the scroll. Looking back at them, I am so happy to see how much progress I have made as a photographer in just a year! As always, scroll for BTS. Love to you all, and stay safe out there! Day three of the week-long challenge & going strong! @deepika.haldankar and I are thrilled to see so many people asking for feedback & really trying to learn and improve. So, to everyone, give yourselves a pat on the back, & keep going! Today is all about layers. More often than not, when I feel like something is missing from my photograph, to make it feel complete, I realize it is a missing layer. That could be an extra plate, or placing the subject on a cutting board. Or, maybe it is some garnish. However, layers can also be about different levels of height, to balance the scene. I have been absolutely loving seeing everyone’s photos. And, it isn’t too late to join in! All you have to do is post your photo & in your caption: - Tag @eatliftbe and @deepika.haldankar - Use hashtag #compositionphotochallenge - Provide the theme of the day (the rest of the week is listed below) - Let us know if you want us to DM you with feedback All week long, Deepika and I will be going thorough & engaging with posts, featuring our favorites in our stories, & providing helpful feedback per your request! Let’s take this time, while we are stuck inside, to challenge ourselves to learn something new, and meet new folks with the same interests. *Here are the remaining themes & dates:* 3/26: Crop 3/27: Shadows For those that are participating, I encourage you to jump on over to the hashtag, pull up the ‘recent’ tab, & engage with others participating in the challenge. As always, scroll for BTS. Love to you all, and stay safe out there! Welcome to day two of the week-long #compositionphotochallenge co-hosted by @deepika.haldankar and me! Today’s challenge is all about negative space! Negative space can draw attention to a subject and enhance your composition. Today, I photographed some black garlic for you. Another ingredient I have never tried, and another one I am probably going to devour tonight. I think I will put it in my purple asparagus side! You all, I am so excited to see what you have created for us this week. And, it isn’t too late to join in! All you have to do is post your photo and in your caption: - Tag @eatliftbe and @deepika.haldankar - Use hashtag #compositionphotochallenge - Provide the theme of the day (the rest of the week is listed below) - Let us know if you want us to DM you with feedback All week long, Deepika and I will be going thorough and engaging with posts, featuring our favorites in our stories, and providing helpful feedback per your request! It’s finally here! The first day of the week-long #compositionphotochallenge co-hosted by @deepika.haldankar and me! Today’s challenge is all about texture! How do you use texture to enhance your photos? Do you only bring the texture out in your food, or do you use different types of textures to create strong contrast, and thus strong composition? You all, I am so excited to see what you have created for us this week. And, it isn’t too late to join in! All you have to do is post your photo and in your caption: - Tag @eatliftbe and @deepika.haldankar - Use hashtag #compositionphotochallenge - Provide the theme of the day (the rest of the week is listed below) - Let us know if you want us to DM you with feedback All week long, Deepika and I will be going thorough and engaging with posts, featuring our favorites in our stories, and providing helpful feedback per your request! Hi, Let’s check in. This week, it really hit me with what is going on in the world. Not to say it hadn’t before, but being turned away from the store, & later waiting in line to get in. All of us in gloves & masks. It really hit home for me. So, basically, I really just want to see how YOU are doing. In the meantime, I’m excited that the big composition challenge you’ve all been waiting for is almost here! Monday’s theme, texture, will definitely fun! Texture adds contrast to a scene & really gives a photo that extra oomph. When I started shooting these asparagus (that I am dying to cook up), I started with a white wooden board that had SOME texture to it. However, it needed something a bit more. So, I went with this placemat instead. When you scroll through the photos, you will see how the texture of the placemat adds so much more to the photo than the original wooden texture. *Here are the themes & dates:* 3/23-Texture 3/24-Negative Space 3/25-Layers 3/26-Crop 3/27-Shadows Next week, during the challenge, when you post your photo, tag @eatliftbe & @deepika.haldankar in the caption, provide the theme of the day, & use #compositionphotochallenge All week long, Deepika & I will be engaging with your posts, featuring our favorites in our stories, & if you request it in your caption, we will DM you with constructive feedback on your images. As usual, scroll for #BTS. Stay safe out there! Love to you all! It’s the 3rd Thursday of the month, and that means that today is the #monthlycolorcollab hosted by the @ww_bakes And of course, the color of the month for march is GREEN! So, today’s photo actually took a while for me to setup. I was playing with different layers and textures (at one point the bowl was on three layers of different wood), because I wanted to represent loads of different examples for next week’s #compositionphotochallenge that I am co-hosting with @deepika.haldankar In the end, I went back to a similar setup I have been using a lot lately, but the bowl still is on at least one layer! I have been getting lots of questions about the challenge, so hopefully I can provide further insight here. The idea around this composition challenge is for you to challenge yourself to trying something new, and improve your composition skills, using the theme of each day. 3/23: How often do you use different textures within food and backdrops to add contrast to your composition? Try it out! 3/24: Do you always fill your frame with lots props? By leaving negative space, instead, you can draw attention to your subject 3/25: Layers create a stronger composition. You can use them by layering food with garnish, or stacking food on top of stacked plates, on top of a napkin. Go crazy! 3/26: Always use the rule of thirds for your cropping guide? Try a new one, and see how it changes your photo! 3/27: Are you used to light and airy images? Try telling a story with your shadows instead! As always, scroll for BTS. Love to you all! Shot on Canon EOS 80D F/2.8 - Photo stacked images ISO 100 SS: 1/200 Lens: 100mm Macro Speedlight with Stripbox and Grid: 1/32 speed at 24mm zoom #losangelesphotographer #lafoodphotographer #feedfeed #food52grams #foodiesfeed #foodbloggerpro #thrivemags #macroshots #foodartblog #foodblogfeed #masterfoodphotography #laphotographers #laphotographer #darkfoodwednesday #moodyfoodphotography #darkfoodphotography #iso100 #stillography_ #stilllifephotography #foodphotographyandstyling #foodfoto #edamame #edemame #edemames #edemamebeans #thebiteshot #foodphotography #yum https://www.instagram.com/p/B97UEI4FyF4/?igshid=1a5mm58g1ohrj

Hi Everyone, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Today’s image is for the #potluckoirishcollab co-hosted by @plate_and_pen and @cooking_with_wine I think the next few weeks might be a bit rough for folks, so feel free to have a pint, or two! I have also created a very minimal image using negative space, one of the themes for the upcoming #compositionphotochallenge hosted by @deepika.haldankar and me (@eatliftbe). The use of negative space can bring attention to the subject, and draw a viewer in. Something to think about during next week’s challenge! As always, scroll for BTS.
