how do you make your gifs?
hi!! I use photopea.com, which is a free version of photoshop. essentially my process is:
I have a mac, so I use screen record to get a shorter clip of the portion of the video I want to gif
then I trim the clip down to multiple clips that are about 3 seconds each. this is to deal with tumblr's size limit - if your clip is too long, the quality of the gif will be reduced when you upload it
I upload the .mov file to photopea; it'll ask for a frame rate, I typically put 20 FPS, but play around with what looks good to you. higher FPS means a smoother gif, but this does increase the size of the file
adjust brightness, contrast, vibrance, saturation, other coloring adjustments
crop the whole thing to fit tumblr's size requirements -- if I want it to fit the whole width of the post, it's 540 pixels width and 300 height if I want to keep the ratio of a youtube video. If I want it to fit half the width, it's 268 width 150 height, but obviously play around with it if I want a different shape/crop.
select all the layers and go to filter > sharpen > smart sharpen. this makes it look less blurry. I use 130% and 1.2 for the settings
then I add captions! I use open sans bold italic for the font, if it's a full size 540x300 gif, I use size 15 font. if it's a half-width gif, I use something like 11-13 size font. I move this to the center at the bottom and leave 15px of space at the bottom
I also add a little black border to the text so that it's easier to read. I do this by right clicking on the text layer and going to blending options. I select "stroke" and set size to 1 px, and I select "drop shadow" and set opacity to 100%, angle to 120, distance to 5px, spread to 13px, and size to 5px.
for watermarks I use 10px font size and reduce the opacity and fill of the layer to 50%
Then I go to file > export as gif. this will take about 30 seconds or so to load, and then you'll see a preview of your gif. I slow down the speed to about 70% so that it looks less choppy. and then depending on the final size of the gif, I go back and remove some frames from the beginning/end of the gif to make the gif size a little smaller. I try to stay within < 5MB so that the quality looks ok on tumblr. I think tumblr's limit is 3MB but if it's bigger than that they'll just compress it.

hi! i use kmplayer for screencapping and photoshop for making the gifs. i always use either 1080p or 4k footage, but i honestly usually prefer 1080p because 4k can be annoying to color. regarding file formats, i'd recommend using .mkv or .mov which are less compressed than .mp4 -> better quality (but file size is what matters the most of course) :)

Since we live in the digital age its is very important to understand how media is composed and distributed among different online platforms.
Because of this, today I’m going to inform you about some important aspects of digital media, including different media formats, codecs, commonly used tools for image manipulation and copyright essentials.
First let’s start with explaining common video and image formats, containers and codecs
A format is combination of a videos/images Container and Codec.
Container: A container is what keeps together all the elements of a video/ image. This can even include metadata such as audio and subtitles for videos.
Codec: Short for Compression and Decompression, This is what compresses the data of the Image/Video so that it can be effectively used.
Video Containers:
MP4: Most used video format suitable for any use and compatible for storing audio, video and even subtitles.
MOV: created by apple, an extremely similar format to MP4. More suitable if you are using apple products for your video.
AIV: One of the oldest video formats that struggles with larger files but is great when working with short videos or television
Image Containers:
JPEG/JPG: A Very common format for images, uses lossy compression which means that the image quality is dependent on the file size.
PNG: Most used Lossless format, which mean that there is little to no sacrifice in image quality however the size of the file may remain quite large.
GIF: Popular, that unlike JPEG or PNG allows the image to be animated.
Codecs:
H.264: A common and popular codec that has effective at compressing data and usable with every platform or device.
H.265: More advanced codec that was made to replace H.264. Has a higher level of quality making it more suitable for high resolution images.
VP9: Open-source codec ideal for streaming since it was made to create videos with smaller files
Now onto Export setting, since most platforms have different requirements and compatibilities the settings you must use for each platform must be different as well.

So, today i’ll be talking about all those things on my blog including a lot of other information which you should know if you are a Film Student.
Let's  start with the basics.
What is Image and Video? What are they made up of?
When hearing the term Image everyone comes  with the common sentence : a visual representation of something. And to say it in a simple way that’s what it is. 
A person's public perception can also be considered while defining an image. For example, a rock star trying to improve his image would dress like a professor and pick up chess. But that’s not the ‘Image' I am talking about right now. 
In simple sentences, Image  is a still visual representation of either subject or object while Video is an electronic representation of  moving visual image in the form of encoded digital data.
Now what are they actually made up of in the context of the digital world? Are they just the pictures?
Pixels is the right response. A picture is made up of pixels. The smallest addressable unit on a screen is a pixel, and the number of pixels an image uses determines its quality.
Understanding Image/Video Format, Codec and Container/Wrapper
 There are a lot of Image/Video Formats, Codecs and Wrappers that are being used nowadays but today i’ll be talking about most commonly used image & web video formats, wrapper and codecs. 
The Codec word itself is a blend of the words coder and decoder, as well as compression and decompression.It refers to what encodes and compressees, then decodes and decompresses the data that makes up your image/video.Data is compressed for storing and sharing via codecs. The data is then decoded and uncompressed for viewing and modification. H.264 or AVC is the most widely used codec for video compression. 4. WMV
WMV files, which are AVI's replacement, may be played on both Windows and Apple devices as long as Windows Media Player is installed. One of the few video file types that can compress data more efficiently than MP4 is WMW.

Google created WEBM, another open source video file format, for HTML5.  There is no need for Flash Player or any other plugins because it plays right in the browser.
